Transfer mail folders from OE 4.5

I need to transfer mail folders and contacts from an old iMac (OS 8.5) using Outlook Express 4.5 to a brand new Intel iMac (OS X 10.4) using Mail. I found lots of suggestions on the internet for transferring from a PC to Mail, but not an old iMac.
I also exported the contacts from OE but when I imported them into Address Book, it only brought the names across and no other information, like e-mail addresses.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Alternatively, for each user, copy the /Users/username/Library/Mail folder from the Lion machine to the MBP. Launch Mail on the new machine and Mail will uodate the folder. Note that you can't go the other way. I do this routinely copying Mail from my primary SL volume to the Mtn Lion and Mavs volumes.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your mail folders are actually "on my Mac" then your iOS devices cannot be set up to see them. However, if your mail folders are within your email service account and your email service is an IMAP account, then the folders should sync between devices.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you don't have a backup copy of the Domain.sites2 file that iWeb uses to create the site you'll have to start over from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing image, audio and/or video files in the published site in the reconstruction of the site.

Importing Mail folders from a Time Machine Backup

Hi,
i just finished setting up my brand new MacBook Air, what i wan't able to do was to import my Mail folders from the last backup of my previous MacBookPro and merge them into Mail on this computer.
To be more detailed, on my last computer i had some folders i created to store some important emails from work, from a specific person or for a specific porpouse.
I would definitly need those folders with the emails they contains on this computer too.
What i have is a backup made from time machine on an external device. I cannot restore Mail from it because it says it's a basic application of osx and cannot be deleted. Is there a path or a specific way i can find those folders with and bring them on my new computer?

Import mail folders from Snow Leopard into Lion

Hi,
I've just switched from my MacBook Pro (MAC OS X Snow Leopard) to a new iMac (MAC OS X Lion). On both machines, I've been using Apple Mail.
Now I want to import the Mail folders from the Mail in Snow Leopard to the Mail in Lion. When using FILE > IMPORT FOLDER nothing was imported: Both settings, importing from Apple Mail and importing ".mbox" files, did end in a message saying that the folders could not be imported.
So I figured out how to access the library folder in my user account on lion and pasted all the mailboxes from Snow Leopard to LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILBOXES. After that, I deleted the "envelope" files from LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILDATA. I started Mail and it created the envelope files from scratch. Now I can see the mail folders, but they are all empty! However, when I browse to the mailbox files in the Finder (LIBRARY/MAIL/V2/MAILBOXES), I can see that each mailbox ".mbox" folder has an "Info.plist" and a folder "Messages". Those folders are not emtpy!
How can I get my Mail in Lion to properly display the messages in the folders?

Could you please explain the whole process of exporting mail from Snow to Lion. I have been trying for weeks on two diffrent computers and I can not get it to work.
I have moved the library, not sure to delete the envelopes. How do you export the mbox-files ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Copying Mail folders from Tiger to Panther

I have an older iBook with 10.3.9 and an Intel iMac running 10.4.8
I had to re-install the OS on the iBook recently and want to know how I can copy the contents of my mail folders from the iMac to the iBook.
I copied the Mail folder from the ~Library/Mail on the iMac. My accounts are working and all the mail folders came over but they are empty.
In the folder: ~Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Saved Mail/ each folder in the Saved Mail folder is followed by an .mbox file. The various sizes of the files lead me to believe the messages are there but I can't view them.

The file format used by Mail changed drastically in Mac OS X 10.4.8 (Tiger). Mail 2.x knows about the old data format and can import mailboxes created by Mail 1.x, but Mail 1.x obviously knows nothing about the new data format used by Mail 2.x and doesn’t recognize those files.
Although *.mbox packages appear to be files in Mac OS X 10.3, they’re actually folders just like in Mac OS X 10.4, but Mac OS X 10.3 treats them differently because of the .mbox suffix. Ctrl-click on an *.mbox package and choose Show Package Contents from the contextual menu to see the files it contains. Mail 1.x stores all the messages in a single mbox file, whereas Mail 2.x stores them in individual *.emlx files within a Messages folder that Mail 1.x knows nothing about.
You may try using something like emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the *.emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that as Other / Standard mbox in Mail.

Can't get mail folders from IMAP server, why?

Allan - Here's the other odd thing. Currently, I have my old mail account AND my new MM account both feeding into and out of Outlook. But since adding my MM acct. - even though I set it as my default mail acct. - the hierarchy tree of Outlook folders is still treating my old acct. as king and my new MM acct. as second class. I know, what's that mean? I have my overriding "Personal Folders" folder, with the sub-folders (in addition to customized ones I added) - all of these at the same level - 'Deleted Items'; 'Inbox' (for my old account); 'Junk E-mail'; 'RSS Feeds'; 'Sent Items' and "Search Folders". Then, below that, but at the same hierarchy level as "Personal Folders", I have my MM's root of an IMAP store folder that has as its name my email address, including the "@me.com". Under that, at the same level of importance as my 'Deleted Items', etc. for my old account is my MM account's "Inbox", "Junk E-mail", "Sent" (which, like I said, I created when I sent the first email from my newly created MM account), and "Search Folders"... that's it. If I delete an email from my MM acct., or am in the process of creating an email in my MM acct., I can only find it in the aforementioned "Deleted Items" or "Draft" folders, as my MM acct. doesn't have these. Is this perhaps one indicator of my sent mail synching problem? Or does one have nothing to do with the other? Does Outlook only provide one each of "Drafts", "Deleted Items" and "Outbox" that all accounts share?

Is your email account an IMAP account? If not, the folders will not sync.
If your email account is a POP account, you can create folders and mailboxes in the Mac mail app and those folders will be for local storage and organization on the Mac only. That is a feature of the Mac mail software. Those folders/mailboxes will not sync if you do not have an IMAP account.

It should have worked, but if everything else transferred successfully then just drag your Mail folder from the old iMac. Its location is ~/Library/Mail/
Quit Mail on the new Mac. Then drag the entire folder from the old Mac to the same location on your new one.
Copy Mail's Preferences file also. Its location is ~/Library/Mail/com.apple.mail.plist
Drag it to the corresponding location on the new Mac.
In each case, overwrite the existing location's contents.
This will probably be easier than running Migration Assistant all over again, which as I say should have worked seamlessly.
The first time you launch Mail it will need to import your Mail messages, which will take an amount of time proportional to the number of Mail messages in the folder.

Transfer Mail Rules from Leopard to Mountain Lion

I have succesfully moved my mail, mailboxes and folders from my old Power PC to my new iMac by moving my Library>Mail folder from one to the other.
The only thing that didn't carry over were my Mail Rules.
Is there some other file I'm missing?

Mail rules are stored in your user Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data/SyncedRules.plist or at least they are on my computer.
To make your user library visible:
Hold down the option key while using the Finder "Go To Folder" command. Enter ~/Library. If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below. It does work with Mountain Lion.

You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

Can you move mail folders from an old .Mac account to a new .Mac account?

I hope someone can help since even the Mac Genius at the Apple Store nor Applecare seem to know.
Due to massive spam to my .Mac account & it's alias accounts I opened a new .Mac account before my old account died. However, without any answers my old account died last night. Which probably doesn't help.
1. Is there a way to move my mail folders in 'mail app' from my old .Mac account over to the new .Mac account?
2. In 'mail app' > preferences > add account > the pop-up box for the new account automatically shows my old .Mac account information, full name, description, user name. But, if I replace that information with my new .Mac account name and info no one can tell me if that automatically delete any mail folders/information from the old account.
Basically I'm lost because no one seems to understand how the system works, not even the Mac Genius.
Any ideas?

Second, because I couldn't get any real answers somehow last night I managed to drag & drop my 'mail app' mail folders onto my desktop. At least I have it there, LOL.
What do you mean by Mail.app mail folders? There is a single Mail folder which contains all Mail.app data (account folders, mailboxes, rules, junk mail learned settings, etc.) except for the Mail.app preference file which stores all account information and is stored in your Preferences folder.
Did you place a copy of the entire Mail folder located at Home > Library > Mail on the Desktop?
The question is can that mail folder from the desktop be placed into mail with the new .Mac account? Some of the old folders were from "on my mac" and some with .Mac & the server so not really sure what moved to the desktop. But, at least it's something.
The answer to this question is no. User created "On My Mac" location mailboxes are stored locally on the hard drive and are not associated with any account. User created "On My Mac" location mailboxes are located in the Mailboxes folder at Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes are are not deleted when deleting an account or changing existing account information with Mail.
When creating an account with Mail, an account named folder is created within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account. The associated account mailboxes are located within the account named folder with the exception of locally stored mailboxes for a .Mac type account or IMAP account. Locally stored mailboxes for a .Mac type account or IMAP account are located in the Mailboxes folder at Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes. This would be the account's Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk mailboxes if these mailboxes are not stored on the server which is available under the Mailboxes Behaviors tab for the account preferences.
Since a .Mac type account is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way, you have the option to store Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages locally on the hard drive with Mail for the account preferences.
Were you accessing your old .Mac account as a .Mac type account with Mail and if so, what were/are your settings under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences for Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages - storing these messages on the server or locally on the hard drive?
Since a .Mac type account with Mail is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way, messages in the account's Inbox mailbox remain on the server and since Apple/.Mac has now cancelled this account, messages in the account's Inbox mailbox on the server have been deleted.
When you open the 'mail app' >file>add account> the pop-up box automatically has the information in there from the expired .Mac account.
Is your old .Mac account information still available at System Preferences > .Mac under the Account tab?
If so, this is where the Mail.app is getting the old .Mac account information which needs to be changed to your new .Mac account information.
If you placed a copy of the Mail folder on the Desktop for backup purposes, you can can create your new .Mac account with Mail which should not change or affect your existing .Mac account with Mail but you cannot "merge" account named folders and mailboxes between two accounts.
You can use the Import Mailboxes feature to import the old account's Sent mailbox if you did not store Sent messages on the server for your old .Mac account preferences.

If you are just starting TB with a new profile, the simplest thing to do would be to copy the recovered profile to the directory where your current profile is located. Then switch; see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles to switch to the other profile
If you have stuff in your current profile you need to save or merge, let me know and I will give you further instructions.

Moving mail folders from a profile on a crashed xp drive to a profile on a windows 7 drive

I have not been able to figure out how to get my current TB (win 7) to read the mail folders I had copied over from a TB profile on a crashed xp drive. I cannot use backup/restore, because I can't run TB on the xp drive.
I created a new local folder in my current mail profile, and copied the contents from my old mail folder into it, but it doesn't show up when you open the program.
Is there a way to just copy over the individual folders or files, and what folder do you copy them into?
