Transfer MS Office to a new MBP

A friend of mine bought Office a while back and they had a thing where you could install it on up to 3 machines or something like that, so he let me put it on my machine. I'm looking to get a new MBP, and so I want to know if they'll be able to transfer my office over to the new machine or not? I do not have the discs, but when I open the programs it does show they are registered in my name with the authentic serial number. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

If you use Migration Assistant it should bring your existing registered copy across to the new Mac.

All your data will be transferred if you use Setup Assistant, which starts automatically the first time you boot the new machine. You may need to contact Microsoft to reactivate the product.

  • Can't transfer old mac contents to new MBP C2D- Firewire issue?

I started my shiny new MBP and went through the usual stuff, until it asked me to boot my old Powerbook G4 (800mHz) in target mode. The setup program did not detect anything via the FW400 cable.
I went ahead anyway and tried to open it from target mode in the finder, but it does not detect it either.
In Network preferences;Network Port Configurations, the option "Built-in Firewire" is greyed out. What does that mean?
Is there something I am missing? Anyone else having issues with firewire?
    thanks

I am having a similar problem. The only difference is a Firewire icon shows up on my desk top and I can never open it.

  • Should I get Microsoft office for my new MBP?

I ordered my MPB 13" online and added iWork. It was much cheaper than Microsoft Office and looked nice and fancy Should I get Microsoft Office too? I had it on my old laptop (not a mac).
I'm a university student so I am unsure if iWork will be as compatable with lecture ppts and notes etc.
    Any suggestions?

It may depend on what your major is, but iwork should be an excellent program for your use at college. I've used both Microsoft office and iWork for years. iWork is much more intuitive than MS office and is less $. You can save documents from iWork in MS office format. I've heard there are some advanced features in MS office that iWork doesn't have, but I've never needed them in my professional use.
You might try iWork and see how it works and if you need to get MS office in the future it's pretty inexpensive since you are a student.
    Good luck.

  • Is there a way to transfer Microsoft Office from my old one to the new one?

I recently bought a new Mac Pro.  Is there a way to transfer Microsoft Office suite from my old one to the new one?

Setup Assistant (or Migration Assistant, if you decide to migrate your account later) should transfer everything required.

  • How do I transfer only part of my library to a new MBP?

My son just got a new MBP for college. What is the best way to transfer *only his music and playlists* to his new MBP?

The portable Firewire drive is probably a faster option.
If playcounts, etc are important to him or if you want to try and do this with the least amount of work on your part, I would plug in the portable drive to your computer and drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
Now take he drive and plug it into his new Mac. Again, drag & drop your iTunes folder to his Mac's internal drive and copy the entire thing. I would use the default location of his user account -> Music folder.
If he opens iTunes now it should read the entire library in and will appear just like it does on your computer. If not you can force iTunes to see it by opening iTunes with these instructions and pointing it to the newly copies in library...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
At this point he has everything and now to get rid of yoru stuff and free up his hard drive, he can simply start deleting everything out of the library he is not interested in. Let him do all the work there.
All playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc. are all preserved and you only had to do two things, copy that folder twice.
Let me know if the above presents an issue and we need to do it a different way.

  • How to transfer mail.app to new MBP?

Is there a way I can transfer my Mail.app settings and messages to my new MBP without having to migrate all of my data to the new machine?
    Looking fwd to your responses.

If you are having issues with:
"problematic display on macbook pro: http://urlb.org/lhlo Mac OS X (10.5.2) http://digg.com/apple/Appleignoring_display_problems_on_latest_MacBook_Pro2008"
then post these as well instead of clogging up the My Settings with issues rather than pertinent info about your MPB.

  • Does Office 2004 Student Teacher edition work well with our new MBP?

    Hello All,
I have an older copy of MS Office 2004 for Mac: Student/teacher. Does it run well on our new MBP's?
I also run iWork 09' but need Office for work. I have read online that the newest MS Office is not that good.
    Thanks

Hi,Office 2004 is designed for PowerPC processors, so you have to use Rossetta to have it work with the new mbp, as it is based on Intel processors, and the performance may not be very satisfactory.
Office 2008 is a Universal application and runs well on Intel Macs.

I have an old Mad with OS X 10.6.8.  I just got a new MacBook Air.  I want to transfer my Office 2011 to the new computer.  I have the product ID number.  How do I do this?

You may get a dialog box indicating you need to contact Microsoft to activate it if you've used up all your activations (2 for the professional version or 3 for the home/student version). Don't worry - you won't be hassled, just explain that you just bought a new computer and you are transfering the license.

  • Steps to Transfer mail from Older MBP 10.6.8 to Newer MBP 10.8.5 for NON-tech person  I really just need the simplest solution.  I have cleaned out old folders on the OMBP, but there are folders I need for work

I really just need the simplest solution.  I have cleaned out old folders on the OMBP, but there are folders I need for work.
I am not a technical person.  I have gone online and read a gazillion "All Ya Gotta Do...." to the point where my head swims.
I backed up my older MBP onto WD Passport Studio via Time Machine.
I transferred all my files there and put them all onto the newer MBP.
I expected to see Mail but did not.
Someone said just use Migration Assistant, but I dont find that anywhere.
Please dont say iCloud because I dont even know what it is.  Sorry, but I just dont use my Mac other than for work, meaning online access for research, and then typing reports of various kinds... and for emailing.
Can I just hook the firewire directly from OMBP to NMBP and copy them that way??
Sorry I am such a dolt, but I really just want easy step by step instructions, thank you.
Would the Genius Bar at my local store be able to help me???
    Thank you,

    Okey Dokey!
I followed the steps for the Target Disk thing, and was able to transfer everything on my old desktop, in my old pictures file...  all the final transfers regarding my documents and photos.
    BUT
there were no folders for Mail, and when I went to the only folder I could find that said "Mail" -- which was under "applications" it then told me that I could not transfer old "mail" to new "mail" since they were different versions...
Now THIS makes sense,,, and I was not looking to do that...
but how do I find all my mail folders????
Is there someplace I should be saving them in order to get them???
Do you mind helping me with instructions on how to do this?
    Thanks!

  • New MBP, how to transfer software/data from old MBP

I'm picking up a new MBP in a few days. I've upgraded in the past but it's been five yrs. What are the current best practices for moving from old to new MBP's?

Use the Setup Assistant in the new computer. First, connect the two computers using a Firewire cable. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new computer normally for the first time. You will be greeted by the Setup Assistant. Follow the on-screen instructions until you are asked about migrating from another computer or Time Machine backup. Opt for another computer and go with the instructions. You will be guided to migrating your old computer's Home folder, third-party applications, support software, and system preferences.
Now, this process will take quite some time so be patient.
The following may be useful reading although it is about using the Migration Assistant. This tool is exactly like the one used in the Setup Assistant. How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac.

  • Does my old HDD have everything I need for transfer to the new MBP?

I have last year's 2.4 GHz MBP (with an upgraded 7200 RPM drive installed). Can I just transfer my existing HDD to the new MBP, or will there be a problem with not having the correct drivers (i.e. for the new Penryn processor or upgraded, 512 MB VRAM)?
It this IS going to be a problem, can I just re-install 10.5.2 (keeping everything else) from the new CDs that come with the computer (or will it not even let me get that far)?
    Thanks!

So, you DO think the drivers are a concern?
    Yes.
I guess an "Archive and Install" is necessary then?
You may or may not need to do an Archive & Install as opposed to simply installing the new MacBook's software.

  • Transfer iTunes Library from old PC to a new MBP

My daughter purchased a new MBP recently. What is the easiest way to transfer her iTunes library from her old PC to the new MBP? Can she do this simply by syncing her iphone with the new computer?

The easiest way is to have the Apple Store do it.
You can also call Apple support and they will wlak you through it.
You can also type "move itunes library from pc to mac" into the google search bar.
"Can she do this simply by syncing her iphone with the new computer?"
No.  It will erase the iphone if you sync it to a blank computer.  The iphone is not a storage/backup device.
