Transfer music file from windows to itunes.

Hi,
I have all my music on my music folder on windows. How can I transfer them to itunes without losing the album's name?
thanks
V

iTunes should read the mp3 tags of the file and not the filename itself. Open itunes and go to the preferences window. Carefully read through all the tabs and pay special attention to the option marked keep my music folder organized and copy music to my itunes folder.
I think you should uncheck both of these options (at least for now). Drag one test file into the itunes library and see how it is displayed there. Keep in mind that if you right-click -> get info on the song you can modify the data stored in the tag (this can be very tedious with thousands of songs). If the song displays correctly, try a few more just to be sure.
If you are satisfied then reconsider how you want itunes to handle your music. Personally I have both options checked off because I don't mind it organizing my files and I like to know that it copies music I add to it so that I can keep the original file unmodified on my desktop, or whereever.
Depending on the size of your music library and the amount of free hard drive space, I can make further suggestions for the order in which you import your music into itunes and modify its preferences.

  • Transfer music files from Nano to iTunes/hard drive ...

I hope someone can help me ... my hard drive crashed recently so I lost all of my music files that were on iTunes because I did not back them up (smart, huh?). Fortunently, I do have most of my music on my Nano. I am trying to transfer all of the music files from the Nano to iTunes. I tried dragging the files, but that doesn't work. Does anyone know of another technique to use in order to accomplish this? Any help will be appreciated :)

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward..

  • Options to transfer music files from Windows Vista pc

Looking to buy some kind of Mac notebook, probably a Powerbook I found. I have a nice library of 100gb+ of MP3 and M4A files that I've been playing through my iTunes for Windows and eventually to put on an iPod Touch. What are the ways, and recommened ones, to get my files over to a Mac? Cost is a big consideration as I am not working now and having to sell things even to buy the Mac.
What about blank dvd's or cd's? Or MobileMe? They offer a 60-day trial on MobileMe but don't know much about it. Thought about hooking up external drive to the Windows pc, but then would the Mac read those files formatted for Windows?

Just a word of caution! Arnie has given you some excellent links and advice and there should be no problem in transferring your music. But are you sure you really want to get a PowerBook? They were great machines in their day and those of us who still have them just can't seem to let them go. However bear in mind that they run on PowerPC processors, since abandoned by Apple in favour of Intel. Depending on what you want to do with a notebook you will find this change has impacted quite a bit on keeping an old PowerBook running in the 2011 environment, They really are becoming legacy items.
Also 100Gb of iTunes music is quite a lot - check out the size of the drive on your intended purchase first otherwise you may have to resort to keeping the library on an external drive anyway.

All of the following programs should work with Vista.
Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.

Assuming it's in the correct format, select your phone from the device list in iTunes on your computer, select the music tab and check the music you wish to sync.

  • Script for transfer the file from windows to UNIX machine

    Hi expert
    1. I neeed one script that will transfer the files from windows machine to UNIX machine.
    2. And the data updated in Windows file should also be update in UNIX file.
    3. Please send me the steps how can i schedule this script.
    Thanks in advance

It depends on what you need.
    It's possible to use:
    -winscp
But that means using a program to drag and drop files. This is most commonly used.
-setup samba on the unix system (the samba package/software needs to available for your unix)
This requires some setup on the unix system, and your windows system (connect the unix system and put a share defined on the unix system to a driveletter on your windows system), but lets you easily make a batchfile which copies data from one windows drive to another. A batchfile can be scheduled using 'at'.

  • How to transfer music files from sonic stage to a hard drive

    Hi all
I need your help, I am pulling my hair out here for the past 3 weeks.  I purchased a hard drive from Apple and I want to transfer all my music files from Sonic stage which in on my old Fitjitsu laptop.
I then want to transfer the music from the hard drive to iTunes to my new mac airbook
Any help is appreciated at this present time I am hating Apple product big time.  Maybe it will restore once I am guided at present Apple customer services who sold me the product initially couldn't help me.
    Cheers

I am guessing this Fitjutsu laptop is running Windows which uses NTFS format drives.  If you bought a hard drive from Apple it is probably formatted for Mac use. Anyway, I don't know why you are blaming Apple. Hard drives come in one of the other format and you need one that works with both.  Sales people at many kinds of stores rarely know much about things they sell outside of immediate application.  They are trained in the things they sell but are not technically minded.  If you had bought the drive anywhere else you would be like the 2 questions I answered yesterday where people got the music onto the NTFS drive but didn't know why it wouldn't work with the Mac.
You haven't told us much about the Fitjutsu laptop.  You may be able to use Migration Assistant to transfer the entire contents to the Mac.  This will set up a separate user account with the content.
About Windows Migration Assistant - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4796 - Learn about how to use Windows Migration Assistant to migrate your files from a Windows PC to a Mac.
If you need/want to use a drive to get the music off the other computer you will need a drive with either NTFS format or FAT32 (MS-DOS) format.  With NTFS format the Mac can read but not write to the drive.  You can use it for transferring the files but it will have to be re-formatted back to Mac format for use with the Mac.  Alternatively you can reformat your Mac drive to FAT32 (MS-DOS) format using Disk Utility. Macs can both read and write to this format but is isn't really a a Mac format (Macs can't repair a FAT drive) so eventually you may wish to reformat it too back to Mac format.  Formatting a drive erases all content so once you get the content onto your Mac you will have to store it there temporarily when you format the drive back to Mac format.
I know this is sounding complicated but Apple's answer to transferring PC content is Migration Assistant.  If you don't want to do that then yes, you are entering the realm where there is fiddly hands-on things to do.
If this is a brand new Mac you may still be in the 90 day period where you can get free help at an Apple Store from the "Genius" bar.  I'm guessing, however, this won't extend to their formatting and reformatting a drive and transferring select content.

  • Transfer Music files from 3GEN to 5GEN iPod

I have a 3rd generation iPod I've had for a while. And I was thinking about getting a 5th GEN or whatever might come out in the future, to upgrade.
But I really wanted to know if there is anyway I can transfer my music files from my current iPod onto a new one, if I buy one? I don't want to lose all my music that I bought (which I no longer have on my harddrive b/c of low disk space) and not be able to put it on a new iPod.
    Dell Laptop   Windows XP

You would need to transfer the music on your old iPod back to the computer, and from there use iTunes to transfer it to the new iPod.
    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
The above methods may depend on what version of iTunes you are running.

You can't use iTunes to transfer music from iPod to computer unless that music was purchased from the iTunes store.
If so, see: How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
