Transfer music from external HD to my PC

My brother gave me his old iPod for Xmas and what I liked best was all the music he had loaded on it. BUT he has a Mac and I have a PC. After joining this discussion, I learned that if/when I synced the iPod to my computer, it would strip all the contents already on the iPod. SOOOO...I bought a 60 GB external hard drive and had him load all his music on it. Now what do I do? When I signed into iTunes and hit the export button under file, I located the external hard drive but it lists each and every piece of music - over 1000 CDs. Do I have to load each one individually or can I load all at one time?
Also, the HD is about 55 GB of music. I'm not sure how much memory I have left on my PC. What if I don't have enough space ? thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Jim
I had the excat same question but from Windows to PC. It is the concept. This is my reply from apple.
When you purchase a song from the iTunes Store you are able to download the selection one time. If you want to listen to your purchased music on a second computer, you can copy the songs from one computer to another.
The easiest way to copy your music between computers is to use your iPod. Read these instructions carefully to learn how to configure your iPod to copy music:
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n61131
You can also use the following methods to copy music from one computer to another:
* A CD-RW or DVD-R
* An external hard drive
* Filesharing
* Other removeable media
* Email
These articles explain how to use these transfer methods:
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93063
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93367
Your purchased music can be stored on as many computers as you would like. You can listen to your purchased music on as many as 5 computers simultaneously.
Once you copy your purchased music to the new computer, you need to authorise the computer to play your music. To authorise the second computer, simply play one of your purchased songs while you're connected to the Internet and enter your iTunes account name and password when you're asked to do so.
If you are no longer going to be using your PC, don't forget to deauthorise it. If you repair or upgrade certain components on your computer, one computer may use up multiple authorisations. Be sure to deauthorise your computer before you repair or upgrade it, if possible, to avoid this. To learn more, read this technical support article:

    Hi, did you try iTunes>File>Import?

  • I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC that uses an external storage device to a new PC (Windows 7) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with new iTunes 11.  How do I do this??  What folder does iTunes use?

    I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC (Windows Vista Home Basic) that uses an external storage device to store the files to a new PC (Windows 7 Starter) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with the new iTunes 11.  How can I accomplish this successfully?    What folder does iTunes use to store the data in?  I've tried several things.  Home Sharing caused duplicates but not all songs or apps transfered.  It is a large library! I've tried just setting the path in the Advanced Tab of iTunes preferences of the new computer with the external drive connected the same as the path when the external drive is connected to the old computer.  This was the best solution so far but still a few artists missing and some apps. Any suggestions?

    Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
    With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
    In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
    If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
    The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.

  • How do i transfer music from itunes to an external hard drive

    I'm Trying to transfer music from my iTunes library to an external hard drive. how do I go about it.

    If you have set iTunes to organize your library (under Edit > Preferences > Advanced) then all you need to do is:
    with iTunes not running, copy your entire iTunes library (by default, C:\Users\user_name\Music\iTunes) to your external hard drive - if the latter is drive X, you end up with X:\iTunes containing:
    Album Artwork (folder)
    iTunes Media (folder) containing (the exact list of folders varies with the types of content in your library):
    Audiobooks (folder)
    Automatically Add to iTunes (folder)
    Music (folder - this will contain one subfolder per artist, each containing one subfolder per album)
    Podcasts (folder)
    TV Shows (folder)
    iTunes Preferences.plist (file)
    Previous iTunes Libraries (folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library.itl (file - this is the iTunes database)
    iTunes Library.xml (file)
    sentinel (hidden file)
    When everything has been copied, hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes.  You'll see this prompt:
    Select Choose Library ... and browse to the iTunes folder on your external drive.  Select the iTunes Library.itl file and click Open.
    iTunes is now running with the complete library (database, media and supporting files) on the external drive.
    If you haven't been allowing iTunes to organize your library (which means that some media may be stored in other locations, i.e., not all under C:\Users\user_name\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media) then you need to do the following prior to the steps described above.
    In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and check the Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder ...
    Then select File > Library > Organize Library ...  In the next dialog check the Consolidate files option and (if not grayed-out) Reorganize files ..., then click OK.
    iTunes will then reorganize your media so that you can follow the procedure to copy the complete library to your external HDD.
    Last point: once you've done this I strongly recommend that you get a second external drive and use this to take a regular backup of your library,

    How do I transfer music from my pc to my mac book pro?

    There are different ways of transferring the songs, but as you just want to transfer songs, the best way is to use an external drive to transfer them to the Mac.
    If you haven't got an external drive, get one. Then, connect it to your PC and copy all your songs to it.
    After that, connect it to the Mac. To access to the external drive, open a Finder window and choose the external drive in the sidebar, under "Devices". Finally, you just have to put the songs in the folder you want, for example, Music

  • How do you transfer music from Nano 2G to Nano 3G?

    I was not able to transfer music from Nano 2G, so I dragged and dropped the music from my external hard drive into iTunes library, and the music will still not transfer when I try to sync. What do I need to do.

    after you connect the ipod to itunes click on the ipod then to the music tab... make sure the box is cheked to allow you to sync music... also go to video do the same and podcasts do the same so on and so on.. (if you want video and podcasts of course)

  • Transfer music from my iPhone

    itunes wants to download a new version.  It says I should transfer music from my iPhone before upgrading.  The menu to do so is gone.  I have synced it and the warning continues. How do I transfer?

    You can't!
    The best you can do is put your music from the original computer on an external drive and then transfer it to the macbook. After which you can then sync your iPhone to the macbook.

  • Transfer music from 2 computers to iPhone

    I can only transfer music from my laptop to my 4S  I'd like to add music from my desktop, too, without syncing my iPhone to the desktop
    I set up home sharing on my iPhone, laptop and desktop

    There is a workaround but it certainly isn't supported behaviour or addressed in that article. Managing an iPhone should really be done from a single library that has all the content that needs to go onto the device. If manually managing the iPhone from multiple computers is a priority then the method is shown below.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
    Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
    I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans withiTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
    As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
    When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entries and import the local content you have on that box.
