Transfer my dvd collection to my iMac

Hi all,
I'm planing to buy Apple TV and I was wondering how I could transfer my dvd collection to my iMac and use it as a media hub.
Many thanks,
Steve.

Expanding on what RK said, sorry, but if you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here.   Some DVDs and Blu-Ray movies come with a "digital copy" that allows you to download a copy of the movie for use on computers and portable devices. You might see if any of the DVDs you have come with such a feature. Walmart/Vudu also has a service that basicially gives you a digital copy of a DVD you already own, though they would not play on an Apple TV, to the best of my knowledge. See:
http://www.vudu.com/disc_to_digital.html
If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) is one of the more popular converters. Once converted, you just drag the movie into the iTunes window on your computer.
Regards.

How can I watch a DVD playing on my iMac on my TV using Apple TV?

You can't. The only way is to transfer the movie to your computer and import to iTunes (making sure it is compatible) and either use home-sharing or airplay the movie off an ios device.

  • DVD Plays on one iMac/Not another

    I've got 2 iMacs running 10.5.6.
    I've created a DVD on a Sony RDR-VXD655 digital DVD/VHS recorder/player.
DVDs created on the Sony will play on one iMac and not the other. On the one it won't play on the recorded DVD shows up as a blank DVD. The problem iMac plays commercial DVDs just fine.
I've tried to see what video utilities I have on the iMac that works and transfer them to the one that doesn't, but no luck. The only thing I haven't installed is Final Cut Express.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks... DHK

Contrary to popular belief, burning at the highest speed(s) are not recommended.
Burn at the slowest speeds that the discs can use.
When I would burn video dvd's. The newer drives had no problems, but the older drives wold complian, and spit out the discs.
I burn at the slowest speeds, now all of my dvd players are happier.

  • What is the easiest way to import my DVD collection in to iTunes 12?

    Hi all,
I'd be grateful for advice on the best way to import my DVD collection - all legitimately purchased - in to my iTunes collection. I'm currently running iTunes 12 via a 2013 iMac running OS 10.9.4, on a home network including an Apple TV unit. There seems to be a lot of third party software options available, but I'm not sure which offer the best solution or, indeed, if Apple offers the ability to do this via iTunes itself.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi
Thanks for that. But do I have to us the external disc, moving it from PC to Mac or is there a better way?. Can you directly connect the systems. I assume wifi is too slow as the size is about 10G

  • How do I transfer my DVD into Ipod. Please mention program and the way to d

Ipod 80 GB there is lots of room for my DVD's but when I try to draw the video and audio file from the DVD to itunes, as described in the Itunes maual, it does not work. I have Shrink 3.2 on my computer and when I want to copy a DVD I use it. I think it has something to do with converting the DVD into another type.
But how. I have called the help disk, but the man did not want to help me??
      Windows XP

i was misled by the computer store to buy an "offfical" IPOD DVD converter program for my existing DVD library - it's not able to read anything copyrighted or not... so upsetting - now i finally have the chance to visit apple.com and seeing all the problems that everyone is having with this "media" deivice, i'm begining to wonder if a visit back to the computer store is needed to just return the IPOD and end the nightmare... it's easier to just travel w/ my 13"laptop then to be transfering, converting, buying accessories & having to charge the dumb thing every few songs!
Apple should have thought of a setting or programing issue that when it detects the copyright, it would allow you to only transfer the DVD movie onto the IPOD without nessisarlily downloading or ripping the DVD onto the computer. If you already have the disk, why would you really need to make another copy on the computer?
Honestly, i don't mind having to buy new movies over their site but to have an existing DVD collection not avalible to me, some of which they don't even sell anymore (but i still love to watch), is pushing me over the edge and back to the store!

  • I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder "Music" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."?

I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder “Music” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents".  Why cant i access the files from my old mac?  I tried the time machine and that isnt working either.  I have files that I need to use on my new mac, all my old programs and such.  I thought they said it was easy to get your files from one mac to another.  Please help.

Your account names are probably different on the two Macs. If you know the UNIX command line, open a terminal window and run:
    $ id
You should see a line that starts with something like this:
    uid=501(your_user_id_here)
now check the owner of the folder you copied over:
    $ ls -ld Music
    drwx------+ 8 some_user_id_here  staff  272 May 14 16:08 Music
Do the IDs match? If not, you could change the ownership. Say your id is "johnsmith"
    $ chown -R johnsmith Music
Now try and access it with iTunes.

  • Can I transfer photos from old macbook to iMac and put all photos on a new external drive without losing any photos?

Had to purchase new Macbook so all devices could sync with Yosemite.   I use iMAC and Macbook with iPhone, etc.  I have many photos over years and do scrapbooking.  I want to preserve my pix on an external hard drive and organize them.  I am currently using external drive on iMAC and a separate one on Macbook that is outdated.  I use them with TM for backup.  Can I transfer pix data only to the iMAC via a transfer cable and then send all photos to new external drive for access and safe storage?  I am confused about backup not preserving my photos.  Help please me transfer and save my pix and properly set up my external for access.  Thanks a bunch!

    connie,
I assume you are storing your photos in an iPhoto library, since you are asking in the iPhoto forum?
if you want to store your iPhoto library on an external drive and keep them safe, you need two external drives.  One drive to store the working copy of the photo library, that you are using to work with your photos,  and one drive for time machine to make back copies of your iPhoto library.
Can I transfer pix data only to the iMAC via a transfer cable and then send all photos to new external drive for access and safe storage?
You could simply plug your new drive into the MacBook and copy the library from the old drive to the new. Then connect the new drive to your iMac and use the iPhoto library there.
Make sure, your new drive has the correct file system - MacOS Extended (Journaled) .  See this link:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives

How can I transfer two user names from an iMac to a new macbook?
got a new laptop and need to transfer two usernames to it, complete with all documents help?

Assuming you haven't already set up a user, the easiest way is to use the Setup Assistant during first boot of the new Mac, with the two Macs connected by firewire.
You'll be prompted to migrate from a choice of sources - choose "from another Mac", select the catagories of data you want to transfer and follow the instructions.

  • What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from old imac to new imac. both have iphoto 9.2.1

What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from current imac to my new imac.  Both imacs have iphoto 9.2.1
os on old imac is 10.6.8.   os on new imac is 10.7.2.   I want the albums  and events to stay intact.  I have 4500 photos and 79 videos. 14.9 gb. looking for some advice here. Thanks so much.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • I recently purchased a new iMac with an external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  Comments?  Help?

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • What is the most efficient (in terms of cost) way to transfer 35 mm slides to my iMac hard drive?

What is the most cost efficient way to transfer 35mm slide images to my iMac hard drive?

    This gives you the basics
    http://www.tech-faq.com/how-to-copy-slides-to-disk.htm
The first option, the professional one, isn't the cheapest - but the results should be good.
The second option is very appealing. Some printers come with brackets that can be used to scan film or slides.
The third option is a slide scanner. I haven't used this option, but there's a significant startup cost of under $100.
In short, a scanner is the cheapest and most efficient option.

  • How do I transfer my data from my old iMac(05) to the new iMac(12)?

I bought a new iMac and went through the setup process, however I did not have the ability to transfer my data from my old iMac to the new one because I didn't have a cable.  I have new iPhones, iPods and Apps that need transfering.  Can someone provide me a step-by-step solution to move data to ensure I dont loose data from my mobile devices?  Thanks a lot and happy holidays.  Wayne

  • DVD will play on iMac, not on DVD player

I'm burning dual layer DVDs from iDVD. The DVDs won't play on my DVD player, but will play fine using the DVD player on the iMac. Anyone have any idea why?

But for 6 hours of VHS video, it will take two DL DVD disks.
You might want to think about importing the footage into iMovie and editing it.
I put footage from about 35 VHS tapes and about 40 Hi-8 tapes onto miniDV tapes for importing into iMovie and found that there was a quite a bit of bad footage: shots of ceilings and floors, jerky movements, shots of nothing important. With good editing, the footage total time length was cut down, and I have been able to use single-layer DVDs for all my iMovies. I have put our family's photos and videos onto DVDs in chronologic order. I have now done 30 years worth--the last 10 years were recorded onto miniDV tapes so no conversion needed. Some years took only one DVD; other years had to go on several; a couple of years we were very busy on trips/doing plays and sports and it took 5 or 6 disks for the year.
If you are not interested in editing, you wouldn't need to use a computer, just get one of those VHS-DVD converting machines.
