Transfer my files to new hdd

Last week I bought a 500 Gb hdd for my MBP to replace my 250 GB. My idea was to start clean from the beginning and install those programs new.....well.... I made it till the Mac OX 10.xxxx. I got stuck (did not want to go any further, because I realized, that will take far to long, specially since I am leaving on Wednesday.
I remember, when I started up, it asked me if I want to transfer any files/sys..? I selected no.
Now, I have OX 10.xxx installed, with the update, how can I get the other software + data I have installed?
This time I partitioned the drive and want to put my data in the part. # 2
How about Final Cut Studio, how will I copy/move it over?
I stopped the installation 1/2 way, because it just takes too long + finding all the settings I put.

If you use the migration assistant, you should be able to migrate everything over.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
However, if that does take too long, my recommendation is to put back in the smaller hard drive, and use the larger hard drive as a backup for during your trip. You can put it inside an external hard drive case that understands portable hard drives of that kind.

  • What Is The Best Way To Transfer Music Files to New MacBook

Just got my new MacBook. So far, love it. Now, I need to transfer all the music files from my iTuns on my old PC to the MacBook. I have all the files backed up on a network drive, that the MacBook can access no problem Should I try to manually copy all the files the Mac hard drive, or can I use the "consolidate" feature in iTunes?? I'm not sure what that does, actually. I want to avoid having to manually File/Add to Library over 1000 songs!
    Any help appreciated!

Unless you've changed the automatic copy option in the Advanced settings of the iTunes preferences, just drag the files into the open iTunes window.

  • How to Transfer PC files to new IMac

I just purchased a new iMac yesterday. I have my PC files backed up on an external HD. My external HD won't work/not recognized when I test it by plugging it into my Mac Book Pro. However because I have my computers set up on a network I saved my files on DVD and the music files which are too large I copied onto my PC desktop to access via the network. Isn't there an easier way to transfer files? This is very time consuming since all of my back up files on my external HD are in Zip format. I also want to make sure all of my iphone files are on there but am not sure what to look for. Yes, I purchased one on one but am not about to carry a 27" desktop down to the store (I bought it online). Help please!

Congratulations on your new iMac. What format is your external HD formatted in, that is probably the only issue the iMac has reading it. You may be able to fix it if it's formatted in NFTS, if so you can download and install NFTS-3G and then your iMac can see the drive. From there it's a simple matter of dragging and dropping files.
If you are still stuck you have 90 days of free AppleCare phone support, the number is in your manual and you should call for some advice on how to move your stuff. In addition if you haven't already here are some very valuable links for people switching from PC's to Mac and also on learning Mac basics.

  • How do I transfer music files to new computer...

I thought all I had to do was copy the itunes folder in My Music to a hard drive, and then copy that to my new computer in the same path. But when I open the itunes music folder, it is clear that only a fraction of my music files are in there. I want to do this right, so can anyone help?????

Well, you can take all of your music on your iPod and put it onto your HDD...

  • Transfer user files to new computer without creating new user?

I know this is probably listed on here, but I have searched for two days and have not found it. I am very confused and frusterated. I set up my new iMac on wednesday running Lion. When I originally tried migration in setup assistant, the only way to migrate computer to computer was over the wifi. After that failed/froze three times (I am thinking because my home internet is too slow?) I just skipped that set in setup so I could use my computer. After reading some posts, I saw that I could migrate by essentailly making my old computer (macbook pro) an external hard drive and holding down the "T" key when I restarted. When it said I cannot transfer that user with the same name to the new computer, I changed the name.  That worked must faster and transfered all my stuff over. I went to set up my itunes and iphoto and noticed that I couldn't find those migrated files. I read another post saying that i now have another user and have to log out and log into that user to get the files. I don't want two users, I want one that has all my stuff! Now maybe I did something wrong or don't totally understand the process, but is there a way for that to be done?? I have read I can delete the "admin" account that my computer created somehow and just use the old computers migrated user as my main account or just leave them both. Which is the better option here? Appreciate any help anyone can give. Thank you for your time.

You did nothing wrong, but you did misunderstand the process. Here are your options:
Log out of the account you created in Setup Assistant and log into the account you migrated from your old computer. Open Accounts preferences, click on the lock icon and enter the admin password for the migrated account. Select the account created in Setup Assistant and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it. Select the third removal option. You now have one user account - the renamed account you migrated from your old computer.
Create a third temporary account. Name it "temp" and use "temp" as the password (no quotes.) Give this new account admin status. Log out of the current account and log into temp. Now delete both of the other accounts. Then connect the other computer via Firewire cable as you did before. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. Now re-migrate your old account using Migration Assistant. After the migration has completed log out of temp and log into your old account. Delete the temp account. This will give you one account with the same username you were using originally.

Check this MS page about Windows Backup and Restore Center

  • Macbook Pro, How to transfer files to new SSD

    Hi
Ordered 16GB of Ram and a 480GB SSD for my MacBook Pro 13 2.5GHz last night.
I know how to install the ram and SSD but I am kind of stumped as to how to move my files from my HDD currently in my Mac to my new ssd, I know that its possible to do it by removing the optical drive and use a hard drive caddy and move the files with an app called super duper but i could do with keeping my optical drive for the time being.
I have a Mac Pro late 2012, i was wondering is there any way i can put both drives into two different slots and transfer the files any way?
Or does anybody else know how i can do it, maybe if i take my Mac to the apple store they have a cable they would let me use whilst im there?
    Hope somebody can help
    Tom

Buy an external hard drive enclosure. They are inexpensive. Put the new drive in it temporarily, connect it and run Disk Utility to format the new drive.
Then transfer files between the two drives with Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Next physically switch the drives.
Your old drive can now serve as your Time Machine back up.

  • Which external hard drive do i need to transfer my files from my G4 with OS 10.3 to my new iMac?

I have a Mac G4 PowerPC (with: processor speed of 1GHz, 1 MB L3 cache) running OS 10.3.9.  I want to transfer my files from the G4 to my iMac (.21.5/2.5QC/2X2GB/500GB/6750M) which is still in the box, for the last 3 years.  I believe it is running OS Mountain Lion.  All the Mac-compatible external Hard drives i have looked at are for OS 10.5 or 10.7 and above. Are there any external hard drives for sale that will work with my OS 10.3.9 to transfer files to my iMac? If not, how can i do this transfer of files?

An external hard disk drive enclosure with FireWire400/800 ports, with others
may be able to be used; but not as an adapter from one kind of port to another.
The old iMac uses USB, perhaps as slow as 1.1; that won't work with newer
USB3.0; but both the newer and older computers could use FireWire; or maybe
    ethernet for computer to computer.
Newest models have Thunderbolt data ports, so adapter cables are needed.
And then you'll need cables to match whatever combination you end up with.
{You may have tried something or another, but not posted back to say if you did.
    And this thread is nearly two weeks old, now. I just happened to find it here.}
For what you suggest, you may be able to find a suitable cable, perhaps FireWire
or Ethernet, depending on the ports available and cables still applicable to both.
Does newer iMac have FireWire ports? You could buy a FW400 to FW800 cable where
the ends are different, if the newer machine has FireWire800. [The old one has FW400.]
This would have to be equipped with the protruding connectors so each could make
the connection between each computer's built-in ports. Not all cable sets do this.
This would be the fastest way to copy content between machines, if FW 800 in newer mac.
Port-powered external hard drives may be under-powered and fail to work, so that is why
I suggest  enclosed HDD with its own AC power adapter that will not rely on FW or USB
for the power to run the drive and the electronics inside the enclosure.
example of external enclosures with multiple ports and its own power adapter:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
This is an image of the lesser model series with fewer ports. The FW800 and USB3.0
are both backward compatible to their older counterparts, FW400 & USB2.0. But even
so the old 1GHz iMac G4 with USB1.1, would not be able to use newer USB3.0; yet
should be able to connect via FireWire400 to FireWire800 by special cable.
If the iMac G4 is still working, that's a plus. Attempting to remove the old IDE/ATA HDD
and access it outside the PowerPC iMacG4, is really a troublesome effort, one to avoid.
But the PPC iMacG4 can be started in Target Disk Mode and accessed as a hard drive
via FireWire cable, too. Then files can be seen as though the old Mac is an external HD.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

How do I get the sync of my 3GS on my computer to transfer everything (files, apps, etc.) to my new iphone4?  And then how do I move the sync to a newer computer so I can sync the new phone with the new computer?
My 3GS is dying and it's synced to an older computer.  I have tons of datafiles as well as apps, music, text messages, etc. that I need to get moved to the new iphone4 I'm getting.  Then I need to move the sync to a newer computer so that I can sync the new phone and new computer.
I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc.  That's not the issue.  It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.
    Thanks.

Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone).  Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer.  How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up?

  • CS5 Design Standard. Will not activate on new HDD following transfer from old HDD. Shows Error 213.10 Have serial number/s etc.

I recently encountered a problem with a HDD drive. So I had to replace it with a new one. Fortunately I managed to recover the data and applications on the original drive.
However when I transferred and installed the Adobe CS5 Design Standard suite on the new HDD it will not open any of the Adobe applications.
It prompts an error 213.10 each time. I can't see where to deactivate or reactivate.. please advise suggested course of action.
Also, will I be able to successfully access my previous files after the reinstallation/activation?
    Many thanks

Reinstall properly. Activation cannot work because in the technical sense it simply isn't there. You screwed it. Run teh cleaner tool if necessary and contact support to reset activations.
