Transfer of info from MBP to MBA

Trying to link new
13" MBA to 2008 17" MBP to transfer files. Not working wirelessly. Suggestions?

Hi Demwoman.
I agree with SP F.
I transferred stuff from my mid-2009 MBP using Migration Assistant. It was tricky to get going. It would have been best to do it when given the prompt at first set up, but of course I didn't know that at the time. Just follow the instructions VERY carefully. Read ALL the words.
Once the process is complete, check by searching thoroughly for the files you transerred. (Look through Launch Pad.) I did a cursory look, didn't see what I expected to see, thought the transfer hadn't worked so I did it again. Of course, I ended up with TWO User-thingies. Yes, I'm an idiot. Again - read all the words.
The worst bit was that it took so long - over an hour - all at a time when I wanted to play with my shiny new Air.
It can be done though.

Excuse my English, I am French writing from Paris, France
    Thanks

All you need, if you've the non-Retina model, is a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable -> such as this one from Amazon.
I know that there's a UK Amazon - can you order from there? Or is there a French Amazon as well?
    Good luck,

    Hi innouut,
See this support page for setting up a new device using either an iCloud or an iTunes backup. Click on the little progress buttons at the bottom of either the iCloud or the iTunes window in the link to see each step:

  • Transfer from MBP to MBA?

    Hi guys,
I've just replaced by MBP with an MBA & understand that I can transfer data from one to another via Ethernet. Seeing as the MPA doesn't have an Ethernet port, I was wondering on the following:
I will possibly never use an Ethernet - USB or Thunderbolt adaptor again once I have run the update. I also note that the USB units appear to be very poor & tend to fail after a few months of use. On that basis a Thunderbolt - Ethernet adaptor would seem logical. However, both units have a thunderbolt port, can't I just link the two this way to transfer my data?
    Thanks in advance.
    Al.

    Hello Alister,
Its great that both computers have a Thunderbolt port, becuase the Migration Assistant can use just the straight up Thunderbolt port to Migrate the date between the 2 computers.
How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4889.
There are several ways to transfer information from one computer to another with Migration Assistant:
FireWire or ThunderBolt (if your Mac has these ports)
Wireless (Wi-Fi) or Ethernet (if your Mac has an Ethernet port or adapter)
Time Machine backup or other disk
    All the very best,

  • How to move iTunes files from MBP to MBA?

I have an older MPB (mid-2009) and an new MBA (late-2010).  Planning on getting a new MBA after Mountain Lion comes out sometime in July.
That means moving files from the MPB and the MBA over to the new MBA at some point.
In preparation of that I want to get all my iTunes files onto the current MBA.  Trouble is that I have used both the MBP & MBA to import music or videos as well as purchases into iTunes on both.
Without totally screwing things up what is the best way to get iTunes files (purchased or imported) from one Mac to the other without losing or corrupting things?
I already have a problem that there are movies on my iPhone4 that will not remove even though they are not checked when I sync.
How do you join iTunes from 2 Mac's?  Do you have to deauthorise one?
Thanks for any help.  I don't want to get things more confused than they already are.

99% of downloads are from my US iTunes account so those rules should apply.  What I'm wondering now is the comment about only 2 downloads.
The entire process is in advance of a new MBA.  I had thought it would be easier to get things moved from the MPB over to the MBA before I got the new MBA.  Now it seems maybe I should wait it out, get the new MBA then moved things from both the MBP and older MBA over to the new laptop.
Because Apple does changes to machines I have the older MBP with an older external HD that matches its connections. (Things from the MPB include transfers from the old MacBook).  Then I have the MBA with its external HD using a different connection because it only has a USB.
With the new MBA I'll have maybe a completely different external HD because its connections are Thunderbolt.
See where I'm headed with this?
It's the process of getting everything from the old MBP & external, the new MBA & external ... all moved over to the mid-2012 MBA & external.  Included in all of that is a huge amount in information.  Music along is over 400 GB.  Think we all are going to have the same issue as the Mac's upgraade and change.

  • Can't Transfer my info from Imac( mid-2007) to my macbook pro (mid-2009)

    Hello,
i bought a macbook pro today and I'm having trouble transferring my data from my Imac(mid-2007) to my macbook pro. I do not own a firewire cable unless it comes with the computer? I was doing it wirelessly and after i entered the code said it was transsferring data. But after a minute it cam up with this notice,"There was an error connecting to the network, and the information on the other Mac couldn't be accessed." What should i do? Does anyone else have this problem? Did you fix it?
    Thanks!

You can make the transfer using an Ethernet cable. From you machine description, I can't tell if you will need a crossover (Ethernet) cable or not. Here is the info you will need to do the transfer via Ethernet.

  • Transfer large file from iMac to MBA

I just downloaded Lion to my iMac. Now want to transfer it to MacBook Air before I open it on the iMac. Working from iMac; 4G thumb drive says not enoough room. iDisk not big enough. Tried to transfer via wifi (time capsule) by draging from iMac app folder to the MBA that shows up in the shared label in the side bare and get a message saying ""... can't be moved because Geoffrey Kloster's MacBook Air can't be modified. File sharing is on in both computers.
Tried going other way (working through MBA) but can't get to the iMac. Remote disk shows the remote computer with a note "waiting for disk drive..."
It took 11 hours to download so I'd really like to transfer from one Mac to the other. How can I do it?
    Thanks
    Geoff

Step one is to get a larger flash drive. Since you bought an MBA with limited connection capability—no FireWire or ethernet, your options are limited.

  • Can I transfer contact info from iphone back to my Mac?

Ok, now that I have organized and updated my iphone with all of my personal and business contact info, can I transfer all that info back to my Address Book on my laptop?

    1)  Copying personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
After you have Edited your Photos...
    2) Connect your iPad to your MacBook Pro and Sync the photos you want back on your iPad.
    Read here...
In iPhoto create a New Album and call it something like ' iPad Pictures '... Put all the photos you want into that Album...
When Syncing with iTunes... Select that iPad Pictures Album and Sync.

  • Migration from MBP to MBA: tips on using two machines at once?

    Hi folks,
Seeking wisdome of the community here. I am retirng a long serving MBP-2010, moving over to a new MBA-2013.
For lots of reasons, I'm setting up the new Air manually, rather than use Setup Assistant. I'm planning to continue using the Pro as a media player, at home, for emergency backup. The Air will be my main work device. I'm manually migrating my data, and will reinstall software on the Air selectively, as needed, to minimize some of the messiness that slowed down my old unit.
So here's my question, concen: Are there any concerns, pitfalls, or tricks to using two machines, connected to the same Apple ID, in parallel? Should I uninstall any of the software in the old unit, or disconnect it from my iTunes, or anything else?
Thanks for any reference, advice, or URLs. I searched the boards, but had no luck finding similar queries.
    All the best, Adam

No, you can connect many Macs (and IOS devices) to the same AppleID, in fact for iCloud useage, you have to.

  • How to transfer ALL info from iPod to iPhone

I have all the apps transferred from the iPod touch to the iPhone.......but how do I get the "internal" data specific for particular apps transferred over?
Apps will open on the iPhone....but no info.........
    thanks for any help here.....

    OK...
One more question.....on the iPhone.....are contacts stored in iTunes via sync or via backup...?
Reason I'm asking, if I transfer all her app info (resetting the phone and restoring from the iPod backup) and lose her contacts.....she's gonna kill me...
    Can I:
    - sync the iphone (with current contacts)
    - reset the phone
    - restore the phone from the iPod backup
    - sync the phone with the last saved iPhone sync
    again, thanks

  • How do I transfer all info from one Mac to another?

A few months ago I bought a new MacBook Pro, and want to use my old one as a backup. How do I transfer all the info on the new one to the old one? Got a firewire, if that helps.  OS 10.8.2 on both.
    Tom in Texas

    You said:
We all confuse with your question.
You all confused? Well, I clear things up! Sorry... I be unclear...
Recently my old MacBook crashed while I was in LA, and I bought a new one almost identical to us. I have to have a working Mac when I'm out of town making presentations. So...yeah, I guess I want to format the old one like a Time Machine disk...so that when the new one crashes or won't open up for some mysterious reason, I can go to the old one and use it. Both have the latest OS, and there's plenty of room on the old disk for the info. Any reason I could't do that? I'd prefer to do it as quickly as possible...not do individual documents, etc.
