Transfer photos saved in aperture to my passport (hard drive)

I have 6, 000 photos saved in aperture and the same photos are saved in my iphoto program. I want to move my aperture pictures to MY PASSPORT hard drive. How do i do this?

If you use Aperture's default Managed-Masters Library and are trying to back up, create a vault on the Passport.
Better is to use a Referenced-Masters Library and in that case you would still do a Vault but also create a separate backup of the original images.

  • Transfer photos/videos from MacBook Pro to External Hard Drive (not iPhoto)

I've read all the other threads regarding how to transfer photos from iPhoto to an external hard drive (i.e., format your EHD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), however, I do not believe my situation applies.
In short, I download new photos/videos from my iPhone to my MacBook Pro twice - in two distinct methods.  The first method (and the one I favor) is to use the Preview Application to download photos to the MyPictures folder.  Once this is done, I revise the name of each photo so that I can tell not only the date but also the event.  Once this is done, I then also download the same photos to my iPhoto Library via iPhoto but I don't make any revisions to the file names (I don't know why I continue to download photos into my iPhoto Library since I don't like iPhoto, but I guess I feel like it is a "backup" of sorts).
My problem now is that my internal hard drive is filling up and I must transfer some photos to an External Hard Drive (EHD).  I thought the simplest solution was to transfer my iPhoto Library since I don't really use it anyway and many people advise to simply format my EHD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  However, if I do that, my understanding is that I will not be able to then transfer the files to a PC, if I decide in the future to do so.  The solution, as suggested by others, was to then format my EHD as "ExFAT".  However, if I do that, my understanding is that iPhoto will not function properly.
So my questions include the following:
    1.  Is there any harm in simply deleting my entire iPhoto Library from my internal hard drive to free up space since I believe I have been downloading all my pictures in a separate location anyway (MyPictures folder)?  Or will deleting my iPhoto Library somehow delete these other photos (even though they are not named similarly)?
    2.  If I decided that transferring my iPhoto Library to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled)-formatted EHD was the best solution, what would my options be if in the future I wanted to transfer the photos to a PC?  Is that option lost forever?  Or could I somehow transfer the photos from the EHD to the MacBook Pro, then re-format the EHD to ex-FAT, copy back the photos from the MacBook Pro to the ex-FAT-formatted EHD and then transfer the photos/videos to my PC?  Is there an alternative better solution?
    3.  Any other suggestions?
    Thank you

1 - no - if you do not like or use iPhoto then yu have no need for the iPhoto library - it is sefl contained and deleting it will not affect anything except iPhoto
2 - you can export photos form iPhoto to any format drive - it is only the iPhoto library that has drive format restrictions
Reformatting a drive totally erases it so you can not simply change the format of a drive without removing everything on it
3 - deciede what you want  - if you use iPhoto then it has no cross platform capability and nothing you do in iPhoto is directly of use on a PC - you have to export from iPhoto to a volume that a PC can read
Since you do not like or use iPhoto and it will not do what you want I have no idea why you are messing with it at all

  • Can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture, can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture

can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture, can use use photos saved in Aperture 2.1.1 in the new Aperture.
Does anyone out there no if you can merge the libraries?  I have two hard drives full of photos saved in the Aperture 2.1.1 library, I have never needed to upgrade.  I bought a Mac desktop and purchased the new aperture.  When I plug the hard drive in and try to use the other ones from the earlier version, the computer says files are incomplatible..
    Can anyone help?

When AP 3.0 was released, Apple added a new rendering engine and the local adjustment brushes. Upgrading at that time required that the library be upgraded also to use the new features. Users had the option of upgrading the library database (and internal support files) only, or to opt for updating all images to allow use of the local adjustment features (brushes) on those images.
There have been additional updates that required the library to be updated also (AP 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4 if memory serves). There may have been a couple of additional ones, but those 3.x updates added key features.
I suspect you may need to update your current library to AP 2.1.4 > make a copy for backup > upgrade library to AP 3. You may be able to upgrade directly from 2.1.4 to 3.4.1, but I am not sure since I went from 2.1.4 to 3.0.
If you have OS X 10.8.2 on the new machine, I am not sure if AP 2.1.4 can be run (hopefully others can answer that one). Merging and exporting projects as a library were one of the features in AP 3, so you must have a library at that level to do that type of procedure.
Here is a link to the update features and you will see some recommendations at the bottom for upgrading the libraries for use with AP 3.
Sorry, forgot the add the link:

  • TS5192 After updating with 4.09 my photos which I store on an external hard drive will load into Aperture for 15 or so photos and then I just get the same photo repeating despite clicking on a different one in the group.  I have to stop working and come b

After installing the 4.09 fix to process RAW from Sony RX100 (after updating to 3.5.1), photos do not continue to load into Aperture from the external hard drive where they are referenced.  The same photo is stuck in the adjustments frame to be worked on and the photos will not advance, no matter what I try, so i can work on the next one.  I can only work on a few at a time and then i have to go away and come back another day.  4.09 does fix the barrel distortion but it has completely gummed up the uploading of the referenced photos.  It's taking me days and weeks to process a couple of hundred photos.

The Macbook Air is a low end Macintosh for graphics apps and you are asking it to perform a heavy pro workflow using a pro application. The integrated GPU of MBAs is a serious limiter to heavy graphics. Personally I would expect flaky performance with certain operations. In general I recommend that Aperture users choose boxes with independent GPUs and capable of taking 16 GB RAM if necessary.
It will be important to carefully optimize workflow. How much RAM is in the MBA? The most Apple specs is 8 GB but you can check OWC to see if you can go to 16 GB. My Aperture/Photoshop workflow paged out at 8 GB RAM before I upgraded to 16 GB RAM.
You should evaluate whether or not you have adequate RAM:
Look at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a typical Aperture/Photoshop work session and write the number down. Recheck the Page Outs count after working for a few hours and write the number down again. If the page outs change (manual calculation of ending page outs number minus starting page outs number) is not zero your workflow is RAM-starved.
Ignore the pie charts and other info in Activity Monitor because they can be misleading regarding RAM usage. For RAM analysis, manually count page outs before and after a work session.

Can you transfer photos and videos from iPhone directly to flash drive?

SO you either need a computer or the internet?

Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...
    http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    >I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure?  Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening.  If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work.  Do you have the right files?

  • Aperture, MBP, and external hard drive

I have looked all over the previous topics on this and I'm just confused. I do not want to do the wrong thing and make my life more difficult than it already is.
We have an iMac and a MBP, both with Aperture. We are going on vacation. We want to download our photos perhaps daily to an portable external hard drive. We don't want to bog down the laptop with too many photos. We want to be able to access these photos on the iMac when we get home.
So, what is the best strategy for what we will be doing for these three weeks of vacation? I've read the esoteric discussions. Just a simple solution please for this specific situation.

Sorry to hear your life is difficult. I hope the vacation helps.

I think you answered your own questions do here's how:
_Assuming you don't want to work on the photos while on vacation_.
Bring your laptop and external drive with you. Use any software you like (Aperture, Bridge, Image Capture or your camera's own software) to download your photo's off your camera into a series of folders on your external.
When you get home, plug in the external into your iMac and import the photos into Aperture.
_Assuming you do want to work on the photos while on vacation:_
Plug in your external and Open Aperture to import your photos as referenced images into Aperture.
When importing the photos Choose a folder on your External Hard drive in the"Store files" section of of the import window.
Make sure all of your photos are imported into a new project (at least one, however many is up to you). Arrange, edit and manage your photos within that project or projects as you so wish.
When you return home select the project/s in your MBP and choose FileExportProject
+If you want to keep the photos on the external+, save the project and then import it into your iMAc with the external drive connected.
+If you want to move the photos to your iMac+ click the Consolidate photos into project checkbox as you export the project,. Svae this on to your external and import it into your iMAc.
I hope this eases the burden.

You may need to prepare yourself for a "World of Hurt" from your wife...
Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.)

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Hi, likely the easiest is to just poll the drive & get something like this...
    Get MacScan...
