Transfer project from iMovie 11 to FCP X

Boy, do I feel silly. Just created a starter for my movie using parts of an imovie trailer and now want to import it to FCP X to develop the rest of the movie.
I know I can export a .mov in its entirety and just tack it on to my FCP X project, however, is there anyway to bring the whole thing over to FCP X so that I can manipulate it? I thought about XML but that says no music, ken burns etc. will be saved. And my version of FCP X (most current) does not recognize the XML file.

Yes. Open FCPX and choose FILE/IMPORT/iMovie Project.
Or if you want to import all events and projects, choose FILE/Import/iMovie Events.
This works well, but I am not sure if the trailers will be editable in FCPX.

I am trying out Final Cut Pro X and trying desperately to import a project from iMovie 11 (version 9.0.9). There is no export to FCPX in iMovie 11 nor is there import from iMovie in FCPX.

Can someone please help me?

However there is NO such option under File/import in FCPX - nor is there an option to export to FCPX in iMovie 11
Can anyone please enlighten me.

The current version of FCPX does not work with that version of iMovie. You need version 10.0.3, which allows you to send a project to FCP.

How do I Import projects from iMovie 11 to iMovie 08

yesterday I tried to transfer a project from imovie 11 to another mac with imovie 08. I have followed the procedure suggested for doing the opposite, such as from imovie 08 to imovie 11. As I'm writing here I did not succeed...
I can import imovie event folder and it was red from imovie 08 but when I'm pasting the project into the project folder of the computer with imovie 08 (copied previusly from the other computer with imovie 11) imovie 08 cannot see is it, and when I'm trying to import it from file>import an HD project it's seen from imovie 08 greyed out.
First of all: It is possible to do it?
Is that the right procedure to adopt?

iMovie projects are not down-wards-compatible.
to open iM11 Projects you have to use iM11.

I can't burn a project from iMovie to a dvd why?

my mac didn't have idvd untill i instaled it but when i try to burn a project from imovie, the dvd doesn't work on any other computer what can i do?

What are you using to burn the movie to DVD? If you are using Finder, it will not work on other DVD players (not sure about other computers). In order to work anywhere, you need a dedicated video burn/authoring application such as iDVD, Roxio Toast, Burn, or many others you find by googling.
Oops - I missed the fact that you said you installed iDVD? So did you use that or Finder?

Fix deleted project from imovie

i accidentally deleted a project from imovie, however the thumbnail still shows on my hard drive. how can i restore the file? it even shows screenshot preview of project and lists file size but i am unable to open the file in imovie or quicktime. help. kind of new to macbook/imovie

Is is possible to take a finished project from iMovie 10, and move it to iMovie 9?

Here's the deal. I've got a finished iMovie 10 project. I want to move it to iMovie 9. Here's why. In iMovie 10, when I shared it to Media, I didn't see any drop down to select the quality. i.e....like in iMovie 9....1080p or 720p or Large or Medium. It just did it on its own. I'd like to take this iMovie 10 project and move it to iMovie 9, and share it to Media Browser again, so I can choose a smaller size, so it will fit where I want to put it.
Of course all this is moot, if someone can tell me how to share to Media Browser in iMovie 10, at a smaller level than 1080p or 720p. I'm at a complete loss here. Your help would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you would like to export a lower resolution version of your project from iMovie 10 (2013), you may want to try exporting it as a QuickTime file. You may find the following article helpful:

How do i import XML-project from imovie with the clips being apart? And not imported as one big clip...

Problems sharing project from iMovie to iDVD

I understand that in order to share my project from iMovie to iDVD, I must go to Share > iDVD. I did this, then began adding a main menu and other details to my project in iDVD. Then I went to view the project. I discovered some errors I had made while editing the project in iMovie, so I quit iDVD and went back to iMovie to make the corrections.
After I fixed my project, I went back to Share > iDVD to discover that iDVD had been grayed out. I have already tried:
1. Restarting the computer
2. Duplicating the project
I have the latest versions of all the software (just bought my MacBook over the holidays). Help, please.

In iMovie, use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE in the size that you want, and then specify a name and location that you can find, such as on your desktop.
Then, in the Finder, drag the movie you just made to the SD card.

I really don't understand Apple's logic/philosophy now.... in the new iMovie... it takes out the keywords which is extremely important to anyone with many clips. I don't mind to pay for the expensive FCPX but I am told that FCPX cannot migrate the iMovie library..... sigh....... what **** they are thinking....
BTW, it seems the "Send project to Final Cut Pro" function doesn't support sending even the "Event". It supports only sending project with the clips associated with the project. There is no way to send the clip without associated to project. Anyone can confirm it?

I get confused on iMovie naming, so let me start with this: I have projects and clips in the old version of iMovie, iMovie 11. When I click on iMovie > About iMovie, it shows the version as 9.0.9. I will refer to this as iMovie 9.
I also have the projects and clips in the newer version of iMovie. When I click on iMovie > About iMovie, it shows the version as 10.0.3. I will refer to this as iMovie 10.

iMovie '11 (as in 2011) is version 9. The new version iMovie is version 10. Yoou see it sometimes refferred to by Apple as iMovie (2013).

Projects and Events cannot simply be copied from version 9 to 10, the files themselves must be updated. Unfortuantely, Apple only offers an all or nothing method for doing the updating as described here:

iMovie 10 will only update the contents of the iMovie Projects an iMovie Events Folders used by iMovie 9. So you could get an external hard drive and use iMovie 9 to move all the Projects and Events that you don't want to update to version 10 to the external.

Disconnect the external drive and run the updating from iMovie 10.
However, it may be just as easy to update everything and then delete any Projects or Events you don't want in iMovie version 10.

Importing a project FROM Premiere Pro to FCP - Any alternative to EDL ?

Hi, when I google this issue - trying to get a project from Adobe Premiere Pro (for instance CS4) to Final Cut I am always terribly frustrated to find only references to the fact that APP imports XML (and now in 4.01 with better support for Final Cut Pro XML). But APP only exports EDL, and that is a very limited platform for talking accross the programs. Does any one have a better solution? Is there any external software for converting an APP project into XML? Can anyone hint as to why Adobe doesn't include "export to xml" in the export menu (like Final Cut Pro so elegantly does) other than fear of people taking their projects and running away to Final Cut Pro (which doesn't make any sense at all, and is no way of dealing with users' needs). Because it would seem that they only want us to be able to move stuff from FCP to APP. But what about us, who desperately need to move in the other direction?! Any light on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Correct, Final Cut Pro project files and Avid project and bin files are not XML. Final Cut Pro has the ability to export and import XML files that are formatted as XML. XML is a flexible file format, the files can web pages, preference files, document files, just about anything. Apple has defined an XML format that can be used to interchange project data with Final Cut Pro. For a lot of good reasons it doesn't make sense for third parties to write or read FCP project files directly so Apple developed a method to write and read project data through another format. XML is an excellent choice because it is so easy to work with, XML files are simply text, easily read and edited and written. Avid systems use another file format for interchange with other manufacturers, AAF. AAF is not XML.
A lot of editors first heard of "XML" via Final Cut Pro's use of it as an interchange format, so it isn't surprising that these editors equate XML with FCP. It is a bit pedantic of me to drive home the point, but I just want you to clearly understand the issue.

How can I transfer video from iMovie 2.0 on iOS7 to my PC without using the share tool?

I'm trying to get a large video (~7.5GB) from iMovie to transfer to my PC for editing. Being that I am using a 16GB iPhone 5s, this seems to be impossible with the share tool (the square with an up arrow coming out of it) because iMovie wants to duplicate the video to either the camera roll or some other medium which won't fit on my device. Is there any way (hack or otherwise) that I can get my video safely to the computer?

The Mac IIci is not even powering on at all. Tried again with wih a tested power cable and no luck.
I think it's best that take this issue to the Older Hardware Community. Not only did I see a fair number of replacement parts for the IIci avaiable online, but there also vintage external floppy drives as well. I'm not giving up.

Transfer projects from one computer to another

I recently purchased a MacPro and want to transfer all my final cut express projects from my old computer to the lap top. I tried dragging and dropping the projects via an external HD to my laptop, but after I loaded up and tried to open the projects the media cannot be found.
I've looked through the manual and cannot find how to transfer.
Is there a step by step method of transferring everything?

You have to transfer your FCE project file(s) and all the associated source media files (video clips, stills, audio files). Don't bother transferring any render files or cache files.
Normally, all your captured video clips are saved in the Capture Scratch folder. (By default, located at +yourusername / Documents / Final Cut Express Documents / Capture Scratch+ ) Stills and audio files will be wherever you originally saved them.
When you copy all this to your laptop and open your FCE project it will tell you the media are offline; use the reconnect media function to point to the location to which you copied your media files; FCE will reconnect them to your project. Once everything is reconnected, save your FCE project and thereafter you should not have to reconnect media for that project.
