Transfer ratings from ipod to itunes

Hi,
Similar questions have been asked many times I think, but I'm sure I did everything right. I am using Windows XP.
I rated all of the songs on my iPod mini and wanted to transfer them to my iTunes. My iTunes was originally set to "manually update". I connected the iPod then set it to "update selected playlists only" and ticked "selected songs" box also.
iTunes then proceeded to delete every song from the iPod. ***? No warning or anything. All of the songs were, and still are, on my iTunes, just not rated.

Hi B noir; I didn't have any playlists selected. It went straight into "writing ID3 tags" as soon as I selected "update selected playlists". The playlist boxes became available to tick while this was happening but I didn't do anything as it seemed to be cranking away doing it's own thing. The iPod had no playlists on it at the time anyway.
Also, becuase I was suspicious of what might happen, before I did any of this I unchecked every song on the ipod execpt one album.
Chris; Is that really true? Surely you can take some of your iTunes music away on your iPod, rate them, then pass that information back to iTunes. Otherwise why rate them on the iPod at all? Plus I'm sure the iPod site says something about doing this - it just didn't say how (http://www.apple.com/itunes/sync/). Would chosing the full "automatically update" have let me do this?
Sorry if my naming of the options isn't 100% right. I haven't got iTunes here in front of me right now.
Thanks.

  • Any way to transfer music from iPod to iTunes

I had to get new laptop and lost all my music from the iTunes I had on the previous lap top. Is there a way to transfer music from iPod to iTunes ?

Or you can do it the cheap way...
In the options screens, check "Enable Disk Use." Your ipod should then show up in your My Computer as a new drive.
In My Computer, go to TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS...>View [tab] and under "Hidden files and folders," choose to "Show hidden files and folders"
A new folder will pop up in My Computer's Ipod Drive letter called "Control" or something like that. You should be able to dig around in there and find a bunch of mp3s randomly named... Those represent your music files. Drag all the folders that have your music in it to the new computer's harddrive.
Now go into iTunes, "add Folder to Library," Choose the folder that you drug from your iPod and iTunes will import all your music as if nothing happened. Synch it up and it will transfer all this "new music" to your iPod, replacing the old music with the "new" stuff. You'll see... It's like nothing ever happened.
Please note that you'll lose your ratings and playlists... But honestly... Who cares??
    Happy transferring!

how do i transfer muusic from ipod to itunes library

You've posted to the iTunes Match forum which your question is not related to. However, these User Tips will help you:
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive
For the future, keep in mind that an iPod is not a backup/storage device. It is designed to be strictly a playback device. It is up to you to backup your personal data, including music, to a local, external HDD.

  • How can I transfer music from iPod to iTunes?

All of the music on my iPod nano is in my ex-husband's iTunes on a Mac. Now have a Windows PC and want to transfer music from iPod to iTunes. Computer says 'Need to Format disk in Drive E'. Will this lose everything? Not sure what the best way is to do everything but haven't got any way of backing up my iPod at present. Thank you!

any itunes purchased music can be transferred from phone to pc via hitting the "transfer purchases" option when u right click on the phone under devices in itunes on the computer when it is plugged in. any non-itunes purchased music is stuck on the phone and cannot be transferred to the computer. u will have to load it onto the computer from the original source or from the old computer.

I just found my old ipod and I want to transfer those old songs into my itunes and put it into my other idevices?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software.  A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • Can I transfer music from ipod into itunes?

I know I'm probably clutching at straws here but thought I'd give it a try and throw the question out there! Stupidly I let my system be rebooted with the original operating system discs without backing up my itunes!! Is there any chance of transferring my music back using my ipod?? Thanks in advance

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to iTunes/preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'Command + Option' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
    Try iPodDisk.
Similar programs are Expod, Yamipod, Senuti and Music Rescue.
If you want to retrieve playlists, iPodRip has the feature enabling you to reconstruct them.

  • Transfer music from Ipod to Itunes on new Toshiba laptop

I have purchased a new Toshiba laptop and installed Itunes. I have all my music on my Iphone 4. Can I directly move my music from Iphone to Itunes library on new laptop. The music was mainly imported from my CD collection - It was imported to Itunes on my old PC and then synched to Iphone from old PC. Unfortunately old PC has died without a back-up. Thus I need to transfer music from Iphone directly to Itunes on new laptop.

You need to copy your iTunes from your Old computer or its Backup to your New computer...
The iPod Sync is one way only... FROM computer TO iPod...

  • How do you transfer songs from ipod into itunes library

I have recently purchased an apple mac and am trying to transfer my songs (which I previously uploaded from CD's) to the itunes library but with no success.  does anyone know how to do this?  Thanks

Some of the information below is summarized by turingtest2 in the post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18842615
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
    - Senuti - http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/

Not a good idea at all to only have info in one place.
You could try , at your risk, purchasing a third party program that may extract info ( not supported by Apple).
