Transfer RAW File with Edited Information?

I have Lightroom on my laptop and desktop pc (Windows Vista and Windows 7 64-bit respectively).  I copied some Canon CR2 RAW files to my laptop in the field and edited some of the files.  Is there a way to transfer those changes, along with the files, to my desktop pc?

Presumably you have a temporary LR catalog on the LT to do your edits but your permanent catalog is on the DT?
On your LT, if you use Library / Metadata / Save Metadata to FileS (plural) with the images selected in the Library Grid view, you should get an XMP file for each CR2 file containing the snapshot of the adjustments when you do the save.  Copy both the CR2 and the XMP file to your desktop, and when you import the changes will be part of the initial import state.  If you have already imported the files on your DT w/o the XMPs, then remove them from the DT Library (but not disk) and reimport them after copying the XMP files over.
If this is a one-time thing then the CR2/XMP one-time transfer is ok.
Depending on what else is in your LT's LR catalog, you can export a catalog, there, with just your images and their adjustments, and import that catalog on your DT, changing the paths to the images if necessary on the DT side.
Presumably you know how to copy files (CR2s, XMPs, LRCATs) from your laptop to your desktop through a network or USB-attached drive of some sort, right?
Either of these processes is a little bit messy.  If you will be doing this on an ongoing basis then think about how to make the process as simple as possible.  What I do is have the LR catalog and the images (for the last year, at least) on a 1TB USB3-speed external drive that I bought at Best Buy, where the drive letter is configured to be the same on both computers I use LR on, and then I just plug in the USB-drive to whichever computer I want to use at the moment.  I backup the entire contents of the drive every night to another USB3-speed drive so if I ever drop the one I'm carrying around and destroy it, then I have another copy of everything.
The initial copy took a long time but the replication of changes every night doesn't take too long.  I use KarenWare's PTReplicator to schedule a replication of my Pictures folders every night at 2am.  There are other similar programs to facilitate one-way replication like RoboCopy and SyncToy and DoubleTake.

  • Raw files loosing editing information?

    I edit my raw files in CS5.  Then I saw as JPEG, and upload to be developed.  Once the pictures are uploaded they look like I never edited them at all.  What am I doing wrong.  This does not happen if I edit a JPEG file. Thank you in advance...:).

    To apply the edits (adjustments) to raw files, you need to actually OPEN them in Photoshop and save them in a different format.  The original raw file is never touched.
    If instead of cliching on the OPEN button you click on the Done or Save button in ACR, then those adjustments are only kept in a sidecar file.

  • When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

    When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

    I shoot only RAW - no JPEG-files except those visualizing the files on my memorycard or computer. I think i have to refine my question;
    1. I know there is possible to make B/W HDR-images.
    2. I know the best HDR images are based on RAW-files.
    3. When i transfer the images in question to a HDR software they change, so when i view them in the software (either Preview or the HDR software) they are suddenly viewed (and processed) in color.
    4. This never happend on my PC so i know it has to do  with either Finder or Preview.
    5. Do i have to make all my B/W HDR-images on the PC or is it a way for me to change how Finder/Preview show/alter my images?

  • Ability to process several raw files with the same content but with different exposure into the single picture

    Can you add to the Lightroom an ability to process several raw files with the same content but with different exposure into the single picture?
    Base raw files can be given with exposure bracketing during shooting, for example.
    The goal - to get maximum details in darks and lights (if we use the "ligths recovery" or "fill lights" we lose the quality because raw file just have no all required information).
    The similar (but not the same, only the idea) thing - is High Dynamic Range Photography in Adobe Photoshop
    Thank you

    The plugin LR/Enfuse does this already. And of course Photomatix have a plugin available for Lightroom. This essentially amounts to pixel editing, which is beyond the range of Lightroom's metadata editing.

  • Issues opening RAW files with CS2...

    I find if a bit complicated to open RAW files with Photoshop CS2 in iPhoto 08 (I'm using OS X 10.5). Currently the only way I've been able to do this is do a search for the file name in the finder, at the bottom of the Finder window, in the path, double click on the folder that the RAW files are in (user/my name/pictures/iphoto library/originals/2007/RAW files), then highlight the NEF files (the cameras a Nikon D200) I want to open, hit command/O then Photoshop CS2 opens the files in the RAW converter. If I try this from CS2 (command/O) the path goes as for as iphoto library (user/my name/pictures/iphoto library), at this point the iphoto library icon is ghosted out and can not be opened. If I drag and drop the image from iPhoto to the CS2 icon in the dock it opens as a jpg not the RAW file I need. If I try clicking my way to the folder from the left side of the finder, my name/pictures/iphoto library this is as far as I can go. There's something strange going on here. How can you go to a folder only one way and not the others? There seems to "hidden" folders now.
    So... My question (finally), how can I simply open RAW files from iPhoto 08 in CS2?

    In iPhoto's Advanced preferences select the checkbox under RAW Photos: "Use RAW when using external editor". That will open the Cr2 file in the raw editor. To get the edit to show in iPhoto you'll need to click on the Open Image button so the jpg version is created with the edits you made to the RAW file. Then when you save you'll need to navigate in the Save window to the Modified folder and save it into the folder representing the event that the original is in. It's not easy. I've not done much with RAW, just a few tests, so there may be an easier way to get iPhoto to recognize the edited version.
    If you don't use the Open File and close iPhoto won't display the edits you made to the RAW file.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    I have CS2. I shot RAW files with my Nikon D90 and now cannot open them in PS.  I heard there was a plug-in to download for this, but cannot find it. Help?

    You would need at least CS3 with ACR 4.6 to natively edit NEFs from a D90 in PS:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    It might also work to use the DNG Converter 4.6 or newer to convert the NEF files to DNGs and then those might open in your older CS2 ACR, but I’m not sure, since it’s a 9 year old program I haven’t used in years.
    The DNG Converter can be found, here:

  • "Use RAW files with external editor" greyed out for Photoshop CS2?

    I've just upgraded from iPhoto 5, and the "Use RAW files with external editor" option in the advanced preferences is greyed out when I select Photoshop CS2 as my external editor (back in the General pane).
    It works fine when Preview.app is selected. I can understand that pre-CS2 Photoshop wouldn't be available, but CS2 is capable of editing RAW images.
    Has anyone been able to get iPhoto 6 to send a RAW image to Photoshop CS2 using this preference? I've written an Applescript to do it in iPhoto 5, but I'd rather use something cleaner...
    15" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Works great with Photoshop Elements, opens with Camera Raw. The issue is you can't save it so that iPhoto gets the changes.
    You have to save it and then re-import. I tried all permutations of saving it in originals and modified folders in the library. No luck. The only thing I didn't try is to save it as a jpeg over the top of the full sized one iPhoto created on import.

  • Importing RAW files with keywords from Bridge

    Hi everyone,
    I downloaded the trial version of Aperture and have now imported RAW files (Canon 20D) with keywords and IPTC data applied via Bridge.
    The import of the RAW files was no problem however the files lacked the keywords and IPTC data, which I applied in Bridge.
    I also tried to import JEPG files and here Aperture could show me keywords and IPTC data.
    Why does this not work for RAW files? What do I have to do in order to get it to work?
    Thanks in advance for your advise
    /David

    When you add metadata (keywords etc.) to most proprietary raw formats (including Canon .CR2 files), Bridge doesn’t know how to embed that data in to the file—Canon and other manufacturers haven’t told Adobe (or anyone else) what the structure of these raw files is and how metadata can be stored within the file itself. Therefore, Bridge creates a ‘sidecar’ file to go with the raw file: the sidecar file sits alongside the raw file, with the same filename and a .xmp extension. This sidecar file contains any metadata you may have applied, as well as adjustments you have made in Adobe Camera Raw.
    Unfortunately, Aperture doesn’t read these sidecar files when importing raw files, so you lose any adjustments from ACR (not surprising, since Aperture is obviously a different raw converter to ACR so the adjustments would be different anwyay), but also you lose any metadata you may carefully have applied.
    There may be an answer, however. But it’ll cost. That would be to use iView Media Pro (which has recently been bought by Microsoft, but a Mac version still exists). There is a 21-day free trial for iVMP—since my suggestion is to use it as a temporary conduit for importing all your existing raw files into Aperture, you won’t necessarily have to pay the £129 GBP asking price for iVMP (others can debate the morality of that statement, however; fortunately I already owned iVMP and so didn’t have to worry about such things). I believe iVMP can read the XMP sidecar files created by Bridge. Create a new iVMP catalogue with all your raw files which you want to move into Aperture. It should bring all your existing metadata into the iVMP catalogue as well.
    Then, import all the raw files into Aperture. As you have found, they’ll be without any metadata. As long as the filenames are the same in both the iVMP catalogue and the Aperture library, you can use Adam Tow’s application Annoture to transfer metadata from the iVMP catalogue into the Aperture library.
    Sort of circuitous, but possible. If only Aperture read the metadata from those sidecar files, eh? If I’m wrong in thinking that iVMP imports the XMP metadata, then what you can do is get Bridge to convert all your .CR2 raw files into .DNG files. If you don’t know about DNG, read about it at Adobe. But briefly, Bridge is able to embed its metadata into the DNG files and iVMP is able to read that embedded metadata when importing DNG files into the catalogue. I know that for certain: I used iVMP and DNG files (from my own 20D) before using Aperture; when I started using Aperture (which I love, now) I used Annoture to transfer all my metadata from iVMP into Aperture.
    Perhaps someone else will explain this better than I.

  • I can't convert .cr2 canon raw files with DNG converter.

    I have a Canon 1000D, and im trying to open RAW files to edit in cs4. Everytime i open it, photoshop says that it doesnt recognise this type of file, but i open my friends RAW file (450D) and it can read it. I have also downloaded DNG converter, and it comes up with this message (first image) but my folder has .cr2 files......im really lost
    I have also asked for help on the photoshop forum, but they referred me here...

    That file is only 2.7 megabytes.  Raw files are usually larger.  That likely means it's truncated (cut off prematurely).
    You haven't selected one of the modes called sRAW (Small Raw) have you?

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro cannot find moved files or files with edited names

    Adobe Acrobat X Pro 10.1 cannot find recent files or files with edited names.
    For instance, if a PDF file is moved in the hard disk from one foder to another, Acrobat cannot find it when trying to open it via "File - Open Recent File".
    Likewise, if the name of the file is changed in the Finder.
    Similarly, if a PDF file is open, it is marked with the yellow fluorescent marker of Acrobat, its name is then changed in the Finder and later on you try to save it, Acrobat says that it cannot find such file.
    Yet, applications like Microsoft Word do not have any of the above problems. It would be great if Adobe could fix these serious productivity issues, which have plagued Acrobat for many years now.
    How to send such feedback to Adobe?

    FCE can use DV or AIC video formats natively.  Any other format will need to be converted to one of those two if you want to avoid constant rendering.  The clips you use must match the Sequence settings.

  • Writing a report file with specific information

    Hi, all:
    I need to write a text file with specific information in it. I'm going to copy it into Excel, so the easier the format, the better (perhaps CSV format?). I've never done this before, so here's the method I need to capture the information from:
         public void step() {
              greenColorStorage = new ArrayList();
              magentaColorStorage = new ArrayList();
              System.out.println( "==> Model step " + getTickCount() );// Checking step #
              for (int i = 0; i < soldierList.size (); i++) {
                   Soldier s = (Soldier) soldierList.get (i);
                   s.step();
              Collections.shuffle(soldierList);
              System.out.println("Shuffling collection now.");
              dsurf.updateDisplay ();
              System.out.println("Model.step() finished.");
              for (int i = 0; i < soldierList.size (); i++) {
                   Soldier s = (Soldier) soldierList.get (i);
                   if (s.getMyColor() == Color.green ) {
                        greenColorStorage.add(s);
                   if (s.getMyColor() == Color.magenta ) {
                        magentaColorStorage.add(s);
              if (magentaColorStorage.size() == 0 || greenColorStorage.size() == 0 ) {
                   stop();
         }In this method, I need to capture this information: There are soldiers on the Green team and on the Magenta team. I need to know how many there are originally, how many in this time step, at what time step the model stops, and how many of the winning color team are left when the model stops. How do I do this? If you can point me to a specific thread that shows how to write a report file like this, I'd be grateful, since I couldn't find one when I searched. Otherwise, I'd be grateful for examples. I'm in the middle of doing some research, and I have the feeling that I'll need to write report files in the future, so if you'd explain any code you provide, I would be quite grateful--I need to understand what I'm doing as well as simply using your code so that I can really learn what I'm doing when I do this again. Thanks very much!

    Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
    You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
    If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
    Photos > Use Raw as original.
