Transfer speed of USB vs Gigaport attached drive WRT610N

I know this is a loaded question but here goes: Assumptions: eqivalent drive specs but one is connected to the USB port of a 610N and the other is connected to the gigaport of the 610N which drive should have the fastest throughput and approximately by what % margin?
The reason that I am asking this question is that I did a backup of about 40GB to a Seagate drive attached to the USB port and it TOOK FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a gig capable drive on order and am praying that the performance will be much better than the USB drive.

What is the speed you are getting from the USB Port..?
I think you need to make some changes on your Wireless router, so the Download and upload speed improves.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab -
This settings are for 2.4GHz.
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect, and after this try Downloading and Uploading on your Storage Drive and check whats the speed you are getting
Same goes for your 5GHz Wireless Network.
Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network.
Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to159 and Standard Channel to 161-5.805GHz...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Try and see how is the data transfer speed.

How do I fix the slow transfer speed over USB on my 24" iMac?

Actually that's pretty good for USB. USB is slow - there is nothing you can do about it. Firewire always has been faster. Personally, I only use external Firewire drives for cloning or backing up. Even then, if it's a fresh clone, it'll take moe than an hour for 160 GB.
So, I schedule it when I have other things to do and walk away until it's done.

Slow transfer speeds between Mac Pro and Shared Drive on Windows Domain

Hi Guys,
Getting really slow transfer speeds when I try and transfer a file from a Mac Pro to a shared network drive on one of our Windows 2003 Servers.
The Mac Pro is logged on to windows domain. This data is transferring via our hard network, not via wireless. Not having any other transfer speed issues on any other PC's.
For example an 8mb file took around 45 mins.

I saw this at a site where they were using DFS with Server 2003. When the few Mac's they had connected to the actual server and uploaded the file it was okay. But when it was sending the file via the \\DFS_node\share_name the Mac took heaps longer for the same file. Watching the Activity Monitor > Network monitor you could see gaps with the data transfer, as if there was some pausing between packets. A pcap showed that there was constant DNS requests coming from the Mac, even after the connection to the share was made. The same wasn't happening when the connection via SMB was directly to the actual file server. As there was only a few Mac on site they left it with the direct connection but were getting an MS specialist in to look at it. Never heard what happened with that one but you may want to try monitoring the packet transfer to see if the data movement is contstant or breaking. I'd also recommend getting Wireshark to monitor the transfer. You can compare upload to download and maybe even the transfer from the Mac to an MS workgroup share.

Transfer speed via USB 3

I am transferring data between two portable hard drives via the USB3 ports on the front of my HP Pavillion desk top. The transfer speed is very slow and fluctuates. For the transfer of 375gb it is taking over 24 hours. Any ideas

Slow large file transfer speed with LaCie 1T firewire 800 drives

I am transferring two large files (201gb and 95gb) from one LaCie 1T firewire external drives to another one (using separate connections to a PCI Express firewire 800 card in my Quad G5. The transfer time is incredibly slow – over for hours for the 201gb file and over 2 hours for the 95gb file.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is so slow or what I might try to speed up the transfer rates?

Transfer Speed of USB 3.0 on my HP ENVY 15-j006cl Notebook PC

On my HP ENVY 15-j006cl Notebook PC I get USB 3.0 speed 40 MB/s top. On avarage 36. My friends have USB 3.0 speed at most 100 MB/s. I cannot figure out what is the problem with my USB 3.0 driver. Can anyone help me to get my USB 3.0 superspeed?

You are not the only one having this issue. I scoured the Forums for solutions and the only thing that seems to have any effect is to go into device manager, remove the drivers for the usb devices and reboot, letting the drivers reload. On Windows 8 the USB 3 driver is built in to the operating system and sometimes it does not quite load correctly on initial install. We saw something similar years ago when USB 2 first came out and Windows XP SP 1a first had built in USB 2 drivers. One often had to do the same thing. Give that a try and post back.

Slow USB 3.0 transfer speeds on MacBook Pro

I have a 2013 Macbook Pro and I've been having issues with slow transfer speeds to USB drives. I recently purchased a new Kingston Data Traveller 3.0 thinking the issue was with my USB drive itself, but my transfer speeds remain incredibly slow. Any ideas what's going on or how to fix this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

V. Slow transfer speeds with new dual band Airport Extreme

I have a new Airport Extreme (late 2009, dual band, full 'N' spec) which I am using to replace an older Airport Extreme (early 2008, 5Ghz, 'draft' N).
I have a USB disk attached and was interested in benchmarking the transfer speed of the new Extreme, compared to the previous version. The results are puzzling / alarming.
Shown below are transfer speeds (file copied to the attached USB drive) under different connection standards (2.4Ghz / 5Ghz & a/b/g/n)
'Old' Airport Extreme
5Ghz - 'draft' N : ~5-7 Mb/sec
'New' Airport Extreme
2.4Ghz - b/g : ~3-5 Mb/sec
5.0Ghz - a : ~3-7 Mb/sec
5.0Ghz - N : ~200 Kb/sec
Hence transfer speeds appear to collapse when I try to make use of the 'N' spec with the latest Extreme. I have tried altering items such as - wide channels (on / off), interference robustness (on / off), 5Ghz channel (manual, instead of auto), with no upside.
I seem to be at the point of concluding that either
1. I have a 'broken' Airport Extreme
2. The WiFi card on my early 2008 iMac (which implements I guess the 'draft' N standard) is 'incompatible' with new the Airport Extreme under a 'N' connection.
Any thoughts ?

Since all devices in my wireless network are capable of latest 802.11n protocol, I really do not need older and slower 802.11a/b/g protocols. To achieve above 200 Mbit/sec, 5GHz band with wide channel option turned on is really necessary. Thus I really wish I can turn off the 2.4GHz radio band (seems Apple has set this band as default) of my new dual band Airport Extreme to avoid unwanted bandwidth degradation. Unfortunately this is not possible with radio mode setting in Airport Utility.
The best I can do to force connection with 5GHz radio band (with quite consistent result) is as follows:
On Airport Extreme through [Airport Utility>Wireless] :
Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5Ghz) - 802.11b/g/n
More Options>Wireless Network Option>Transmit Power: 100%
More Options>Wireless Network Option>Use Wide Channels: checked
More Options>Wireless Network Option>5 GHz Network Name:
checked and same network name with extra suffix "(5 GHz)"
On 27" iMac through [System Preferences>Network>AirPort>Advanced>AirPort]:
Preferred Networks:
Create only one profile in Preferred Networks for the above network name with suffix "(5GHz)"
Uncheck the option [Remember networks this computer has joined] to ensure there is only one profile under Preferred Networks .
Once all above settings are done, restart Airport Extreme in Airport Utility. Your computer should connect wirelessly to the base station through 5GHz band after booting most of the time. Even when it is not occasionally, simply go to the Airport icon in main menu bar and click on the network name with suffix "(5GHz)" in dropped-down list to connect manually. With all these settings, I have achieved 300 Mbit/sec bandwidth on my iMac most of the time for fast Time Machine backup.
How I wish feature for better radio mode control by end user will be implemented in next update of Airport Utility. Apple should trust end user's brain better than artificial intelligence (or ignorance ?) in wireless network implementation. Wireless traffic between the two radio bands and among various wireless devices should be segregated specifically in Airport Utility by end users whenever dual band Airport base stations are in use.

Best USB CD/DVD 'Superdrive' drive for new iMac

I've been reading several posts about external (USB?) optical DVD +/- burner/reader drives for the latest desktop iMacs, and several comments have been about various third party ones being superior to the external Apple one that's also available (i.e. that Apple drives often give trouble and are less reliable).
Having seen the likes of LaCie, Western Digital and Seagate mentioned, I'd appreciate comments/recommendations before I go ahead and buy a new iMac - along with an external Apple? or third party? drive.

The new iMacs use USB 3.0 speeds, now.
I would look for an optical drive that uses the new USB 3 connections.
This will be a very fast drive.
If you can't find an optical drive with USB 3.0, then look for a drive that uses FireWire 400/800 and use an Apple FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter to connect the drive.
FireWire 800 optical drives are pretty fast at up to 85Mbps transfer speeds.

Firewire 400 Transfer Speeds Slow

I have three Western Digital My Book Studio drives hooked up via Firewire 400. As I understand it, FW400's theoretical max transfer rate is 50MB/s (400Mb/8~=50MB). However, the transfer between the drives moves along at a paltry 12MB/s.
If I hook up a single drive, or all three (daisy-chained), and transfer directly to my internal drive, the transfer speed sits at 14MB/s (internal drive is a 320GB 7200rpm Seagate drive).
When I hook up one of the My Book Studio drives via USB, the transfer speed hovers around 34.5MB/s.
When I hook up a WD Passport Elite via USB, the transfer speed stays at a constant 30MB/s.
I have updated the firmware on all of the drives, and even installed WD's special drivers. None of this has helped the speed issue.
Please help me fix the slow transfer speeds!

That test isn't likely valid, because OS X should have cached that file in memory (unless you let the file get bigger than it has RAM, in which case it may still have a good portion of it cache). Look at the Activity Monitor and you'll see that the write speed will spike way above the read speed (if it writing drive is faster than the reading one).

File transfer speed in Shared USB Hard Drive via Airport Extreme

I' am planing to buy one of this, but first I need to know what kind of file transfer speed I can expect when sharing USB drive via Airport Extreme 1000Mbps Ethernet.

most likely 14m/sec but normally 10.5 this is ethernet wired and usb attached. wireless would be about 8M/sec
Wired is good enough I use it for Finder copy frequently.

Slow transfer speed to external USB hard drive

I'm not sure if this forum is the right fit, but here goes. I'm trying to transfer files from a firewire external hard drive (partitioned as os x) to a usd external hard drive (partitioned as fat 32) but the transfer rate is very slow. I can watch the file count during the transfer and it only transfers one file about every two seconds (files are 1 meg each). Since I'm tranferring over 13,000 files it takes forever. Any ideas why transferring to a usb hard drive is so slow?

USB drives are slow to start with. If you have a USB 2.0 compatible drive (and the computer has USB 2.0 supported ports) you can expect average transfer rates that are about 60 percent those of FW400. To aggravate the matter your USB drive is formatted FAT32. That slows it down even more.
You could speed things up by putting the FAT32 drive in a Firewire enclosure in order to transfer files to it. Then return it to the USB enclosure in order to transfer the files to the PC. Or replace the USB enclosure with one that supports both FW800 and USB 2.0.
At the rate you observed (1 MB every 2 seconds) it should only take around 8 hours (which is considerably shorter than "forever"). Not much consolation, I know.
If you have no better alternatives and if both computers support 100BT or Gigabit Ethernet, then you might consider networking them and doing the transfer over Ethernet. You might actually achieve faster transfer rates than using the USB drive. 100BT Ethernet should be able to move the data around 3-4 MBs/second which is about 6 times faster than what you're now observing.

USB Flash Drive Transfer Speed Extremely Slow

I have a 32GB Verbatim USB Flash Drive. The speed is 480Mb/sec. My mac is a MacPro running 10.5.8.
For some reason the transfer speeds from the computer to the flash drive is really slow. 2gb file takes 3 hours to transfer. I tested the flash drive on another MacPro and the transfer speeds were normal.
I have reformatted the flash drive (as FAT32) but it doesn't seem to help that much.
Anyone have this problem before and know whats up? This thing is basically unusable right now...

I just used Quickbench to test the speeds on my USB drive. About 38mbs Read, 32mbs Write. Pretty poor numbers. How that works out to your own I don't know, maybe you could do the math to find out.

Very slow transfer speeds with external hard drives through Firewire and US

Hi All,
My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little. Apple support suggested I post my issue here. Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!

So I rejigged my setup a tad. My RAID 0 is still FW800, the second drive is back on FW400 on the back port, and the third is USB 2.0 on the back as well.
It's interesting to note that I saw the FW800 taking a bandwidth hit if the FW400 drives was being read/written to. For example, if I was averaging 50-60MB/sec on the FW800 drives and copy something large to the FW400 drive, each drive averages out to about 30/MB second, roughly half the FW800 speed I was getting. The USB while the slowest didn't cause any slowness on the FW drives.
Here are my Xbench results. These results are from each drive being benchmarked individually with no other drives being tested at the same time.

Slow USB transfer speed when iTunes is running

hello everyone,
today I was trying to transfer a bunch bunch of files from my NAS to a portable USB 3 hard drive.
the transfer speed was 18 to 20 mbytes/s... quite slow for this device.
after investigation the problem was found that when iTunes (11.0.1) is NOT running the tranfer speed goes up to 90+ mbytes/s
anyone has an idea on how to solve the problem?

The only testing that could be performed prior to resetting the AirPort would be to make throughput performance measurements ... but, at best, these would only stand to confirm the slow transfer speeds that you are seeing.
However, if you do want to make some quantitative measurements, one easy to use (& free) utility is: AJA System Test.
