TRANSFER Windows Software question

I want to replace my Windows laptop with a MacbookPro 15”inch.
However I have some expensive software on my Windows laptop (including Dreamweaver) and don’t have the money to buy the Apple versions.
Is there any way I can transfer any existing software onto a Macbook ?
Thanks

• OSX Server / VPN / Windows Software Question

Ok -
Here shortly our company is looking to purchase an accouting software that is Windows only. Its a construction specific accounting & project management software that is a great solution for a small company. The software is called Foundation for Windows. I wish there were options for a mac program, but alas...
But...
Being we run a Mac Mini Server, I am having some issues conceptually figuring out how to set this up. And on top of it all, we need guys in the field to be able to VPN in and run the software from the server to input daily reports and write purchase orders for on-site work.
At this time, we are running the following, and would need to use these machines to access the software as well.
Mac Mini Server (which will have Mavericks/ Server 3.0 at thime of software) 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 (where the software would live)
Time Capsule
15" MBPs 2.0 GHz w the flash hard drives (the most recent release) & Mavericks
13 MBP 2.4 GHz w the flash hard drive & Mavericks
The MBPs are already slated to be Bootcamp-ed with Windows 7.
From a cost standpoint, we would probably get Windows laptops for the field guys. Dust dirt and grime are no way for a Mac to live.
So, I humbly ask the community to assist me on getting this all set up. At this point I know that this is over my head.

To run a public VPN server, you need to do the following:
1. Give the gateway either a static external address or a dynamic DNS name. The latter must be a DNS record on a public DNS registrar, not on the server itself. Also in the latter case, you must run a background process to keep the DNS record up to date when your IP address changes.
2. Give the VPN server a static address on the local network, and a hostname that is not in the top-level domain "local" (which is reserved for Bonjour.)
3. Forward external UDP ports 500, 1701, and 4500 (for L2TP) and TCP port 1723 (for PPTP) to the corresponding ports on the VPN server.
4. Configure any firewall in use to pass this traffic.
One other important point is that an L2TP VPN usually won't work in the current release of Mavericks, due to a bug. Unofficially, you can work around the bug by replacing the file /usr/sbin/racoon with a copy from a 10.8 installation.
All that done, you should be able to connect to any service on the network via the built-in VPN client.

• Can I use Remote Desktop to run Windows software from my Mac

Here's what I want to do:
1) Set up a small office LAN with an Apple Xserve as the file server; clients are mostly iMacs but a few PCs.
2) There are one or two software apps I need that exist only in the Windows world (such as a good document comparison software like DeltaView).
3) I want to have one dedicated PC for my one or two essential Windows apps and then run Remote Desktop Connection on my Mac client to launch the Windows app on the PC client and use it to edit or otherwise manipulate a data file stored on the server.
Is this possible?

Thanks for your prompt reply.
OK, maybe I'm missing something basic but then why would I ever want to run Windows network in my office? The bugbear about Macs is that there is certain Windows software for which there is no good Mac equivalent. But you are telling me that as long as I have a couple of Windows boxes, I can run my Windows software on them through my Mac, even though the data files are stored on an separate box (an Xserve).
Now, for the $64 question -- is it possible to set up a network in such a way that I could use RDC on my PowerBook in, say, Chicago to run the software installed on the Windows box and in turn to open and manipulate the files stored on the Xserve in my office, halfway across the world in Abu Dhabi? Would this be a particularly difficult configuration?
Thanks,
DXB Law

• Can I use windows software on my mac?

May seem like a silly question, but when I purchased my macbook, I was told that I could reserve a portion of the harddrive to run windows software. I need to run Quickbooks Pro that I have in windows form. How do I load it onto my macbook???

Ok, several ways.
Apparently, there's a wine-like solution for Mac, so you can run windows software from within Mac OS X. Expect it to be somewhat buggy and imperfect though, and it might not run some software. It's coming out soon as far as I know. I saw in on MacRumors a while ago.
Then there's the Apple solution called Boot Camp. What it does is just allow you to dual boot. It means you will actually be running windows on the machine.
And then a new user favorite, is using machine emulation, it emulates a second machine inside the current machine allowing you to run Windows inside Mac OS X. It's very memory-hungry, though, and somewhat slower usually. Look into Parallels and QEMU.

• Licensing and transfer of software from One PC to Another

So there is an ongoing question in my mind about how the copies of office licensed through dell with the purchase of a PC can be used. It seems that some think you can transfer that license to a new computer and others think that you can not. Now I have
read the confusing ULA and all the contradicting opinions from different online sources and I would just like some clarification.
The ULA says this under OEM:
“How can I use the software? The software is licensed, not sold. Under this agreement we grant you the right to run one copy only on the computer with which you acquired the
software (the licensed computer) for use by one person at a time, but only if you comply with all the terms of this agreement. Our software license is permanently assigned to the licensed computer. “
It then states in the very next paragraph:
“Can I transfer or reassign the software to another user or computer? You may not transfer the software to another user. You may transfer the software directly to a third party only as installed on the licensed
computer, with the Certificate of Authenticity label and this agreement. Before the transfer, that party must agree that this agreement applies to the transfer and use of the software. You may not retain any copies. You may reassign this software license to
a different computer any number of times, but not more than one time every 90 days. If you reassign, that other computer becomes the “licensed computer.” If you retire the licensed computer due to hardware failure, you may reassign the license sooner.”
A clear answerer explaining what these items mean and why they seem to say the exact opposite thing from someone would be nice. Maybe a Microsoft employee or Licensing expert could help out.
Thanks,
Brett

• PC switching to Mac - software question.

I am switching from a PC to MacBook Pro...
I am not sure of the best newsgroup to put this in, but I will start with this one.
I have installed Parelles to run a particular Windows app; most others that I use have a mac version.
I have a considerable investment in Win software (i.e. adobe software, Office 2007 etc.). To get the mac version, do I just have to buy it and loose my investment in win software? Will software key numbers from windows work while installing a comparable mac version? My question is about mac software, not win software running under Parallels.
Please advise.
Bob

To get the mac version, do I just have to buy it and loose* my investment in win software?
No, you can either:
1. Ask if a crossgrade is available from the software vendor.
2. If none is available, sell the license for your PC software and buy a Mac software equivalent.
Will software key numbers from windows work while installing a comparable mac version?
That varies by software title. Some allow you to change licenses. Check with the software vendor.
There are some almost free and free equivalent software titles to Windows software available for the Mac**:
http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html
- * Just for your information, the word is lose, not loose. It is an easy mistake to make, which I have in the past when I wasn't as familiar with English spellings and meanings.

• Mac for Windows Software

Hi, I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 operating system. When we purchased the computer, I knew I would have friends that used a windows operating system, so we purchased the mac for windows software. Sometimes we I am sending an attachment to an email that I know I have "saved as" in a doc. format rather than a docx., why can't the party open the attachment. They said it was a DAT file? Could I be doing something. I do apologize up front if this not something I can post. I am trying to solve this problem myself rather than spending the money for tech support. Thank you. esrmp2

Welcome to Apple Discussions
I really don't understand what you mean by "Mac for Windows software."
Unfortunately, the problem lies with the recipient's mail program, likely Outlook. Have they saved the attachment to their hard drive first? Have you tried sending it as a PDF? That might let them open the attachment.
This forum is dedicated to the productivity application, AppleWorks. It is not a "catch-all" for how Apple computers work. For those type of questions the best places to start are the forums for your version of the Mac OS or your model of Mac. For you I suggest the Mail and Address Book forum in the Category: Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.

• Canon HF10 avchd file will not transfer in Log and Transfer window

Hello-
I just installed Final Cut Express 4 on my MacBook (intel core due with 4gigs ram... running snow leopard/ 10.6.1) and I cannot get any video to load in from my Canon Vixia HF10. When using the Log & Transfer window my camera is recognized and I see and can preview all the clips that are on the camera (attached via. USB). All video is shot at the highest quality FX rate. When I add a clip to the "Que" the wheel spins for about 10 seconds then it says '1 clip queued' and an orange "!" appears. If I hover over the icon it says 'failed- no data'.
I am using the apple intermediate HD codec 1060i and stereo audio. I have re-installed FCE, removed preferences files, rebooted the computer, restarted and reconnected the camera etc... and no luck.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. I have seen a smattering of others with a similar issue but no resolution that works.
Thanks for your help!

I cannot get FCE to recognize my m2ts (AVCHD) files either. It seems FCE, like iMovie, will import directly from the camera but it will NOT import m2ts files already off-loaded from the camera onto a drive on your computer or network. Some have said it will work ONLY if the entire file set, including the support files the camera creates in addition to the video file itself, is present at the time you attempt the transfer. Worse, Canon's software that most people use to transfer the video files from the camera do not also transfer these support files. It may be doable if you connect the camera and transfer the entire file and folder structure as-is but that's only a guess.
If you are like me who offloaded these files long before I purchased my MAC (and did not also offoad the support files), you may be out of luck. This caveat to working with AVCHD files is a subtle distinction that Apple should clear up, especially since it is prominently highlighting this new capability. I was in the Apple store and viewed the product with a sales associate BEFORE the purchase. The sales associated looked at the Log and Transfer utility and also thought this would work-- so I bought FCE on the spot.
If anyone knows how to import previously off-loaded m2ts files directly into either iMovie or FCE, I would like to hear how it is done. Please note that I have been down the file conversion route too. Toast 10 de-synced the audio and other file converters left horrible jagged edges to moving pictures. De-interlace programs made it worse. Most conversions will introduce some corruption or undesireable artifact.
Others have said, boo hoo, AVCHD is a garbage codec that the pros will not touch and Apple shouldn't either. OK but Apple is attempting to sell its computers to the average Joe and people who like SIMPLICITY. Would be nice if Apple better supported AVCHD "for the rest of us."

• How to I transfer my software from my old pc to my new pc without downloading it again

I have been using a temporary desktop computer while my laptop was unavailable... however I have my laptop back now, and have pulled the drive from the desktop to import my files into my laptop... I had to download all of my CC software (All 27 programs) while at a friends house because I have very limited bandwidth at home... The drive I pulled has all of my software on it... is there any way I can copy my downloaded software from the drive to my laptop without having to go through the long process of redownloading the software again? I have very limited bandwidth, and will have to make a trip to my friends house to do this again... while this is possible, considering that cc software must be validated by my account when it runs, I thought there may be a way to transfer the software without having to go through all of the download process again....
Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
thanks,
Rob Long

Rajshree,
That sounds great... but the question is where are the installer files located? Do I just copy the "C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Adobe" directory over or what? With the Creative Cloud membership, there are no standard downloads ...everything is downloaded, installed and updated through the Creative Cloud Manager software now.... I have actually converted my entire harddrive from the other PC into an external USB hard drive... I just need to know what to copy over ... I am a programmer, and I know that there are typically several locations with information about "Cloud" based software... but what main folder needs to be copied over to prevend having to re-acquire the "payload" , or the installlers as it were?
thanks,
Rob Long

is there any compatibly pack to install windows software on Sun system?

One possibility is Wine:

Keep in mind that the latest stable version of it is from early 2012 and you may have to learn to compile your own working version of it before it is a functional tool. In any case you get no help with it here in the OTN forums. There are Wine forums all over the Internet.

Try here you'll need to download the software but it will be the latest version, should be better than that on the original cd.

• Apple Windows Software page?

I know it's heretical to ask this, but now that I'm running Parallels and setting up installations for Windows Switchers and such, is there a page on Apple's site dedicated to all of the Windows software they write?
I've found individual pages for Quicktime, Bonjour, etc..., but no dedicated URL. I've searched for about a half an hour and cannot find it.
Much obliged,
Mick

there are no links on the following page, but it does
provide some consolidated information:
Apple Software versions and Microsoft Windows
compatibility
Wow! BRAVO! That's at least half of the equation. Thanks. It's strange that none of the programs are active links, but it's the first list I've seen. I honestly thought that people were joking about AppleWorks, but there it is. What the heck was Apple thinking about that?... I don't get it...
Meanwhile, I answered the other half of my question just last night. VersionTracker's BootCamp page offers some excellent information about where to start with Windows programs. It's a brand new world for me, so this is a helpful layout and organization for me to work with:
http://www.versiontracker.com/bootcamp/
Not that I'd expect something quite so rich from Apple, but it's exactly what I need since installing Parallels, the most amazing program I've seen this millennium.
Thanks again to all who tried to help. These Boards can usually fill in glaring holes in my knowledge and experience.
much obliged,

• An emulator for windows software

I need to run a simple windows software program on my Macbook running 10.6.4
I have just looked at crossover and also at iemulator.
It appears that crossover does not require the installation of Windows software. Am I reading that correctly?
iemulator does require windows, but it has the added advantage of working on all my Macs including a non-intel Mac.
I don't anticipate needing this for many applications, but I would like to have something that is simple.
Have you found any solution that might work for me?
Thanks,
Jemel

Your MacBook and your Mac Mini if it has at least 4 USB ports on rear can both use the VMWare, Parallels, VirtualBox, and Boot Camp. These programs are known as virtualization engines. These are not to be confused with emulators. Emulators emulate hardware. An Intel Mac does not need CPU or GPU hardware to be emulated, and only needs the firmware that is more commonly known to PCs to be given to the environment in question.
Crossover does not require Windows installation, but does require an Intel Mac such as your MacBook or a 4 plus USB port Mac Mini. Its application support though is nowhere near as great as actually having a full fledged virtualization software. You can check its website to find out which application support it does have.
Before you get any virtualization, WINE, or Emulator software, ask yourself what applications made for Windows you need to read their documents on a Mac? Maybe there is a Mac public domain software that can read the same documents.
See my FAQ* for some tips:
