Transfered music files from windows XP to windows vista won't play

I recently bought a new Dell XPS 410 running Windows Vista Premium. I used a jump drive to transfer all my music from itunes to the new computer. The songs show up in my library, however when I click on it to play it comes up with a message that says "The song 'xxxx' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" This happens with songs that I purchased from itunes as well as songs that I downloaded from CDs. I have enabled the new computer to play purchased songs but this did not help. HELP!!! I know, I should have purchased an Apple.

Please read the appropriate support articles from http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/.
There is a procedure you need to follow for the iTunes library to be accessible from the external drive.
Get back here to report how you get on.

  • Need up transferring music files from windows phone

I have a zune as a MP3 player which my Mac reads as a windows phone via the windows phone app. There is an import button to import pictures and videos from it onto my computer (which hasn't worked anyway) however, I can't figure out how to transfer all of my music from my zune onto my Mac book. I realize there is the very long way of plugging the zune into a regular computer and transferring the data onto a USB/memory stick and then transferring onto my Mac. I'm just hoping that there is some possible way of just importing it straight from my zune onto my Mac if anyone can help.
Keep in mind, I know how to get music from my Mac onto my zune. It's the opposite that I'm having trouble with.
    Thank you.

    Hi John,
    Welcome to the Mac Forums!
Sorry you are having problems. The "Priviliges" problem you are having has nothing to do with files being locked. It has to do with the way Mac OS tracks who is allowed to see what data on your computer. This way when you have multiple users logged onto your Mac, each user can only see what they are allowed to see and can't rummage through everyone elses files. Keeps things private from other users. Unfortunately, it can create complications when copying files.
I think the best solution for you is to set up your entire Windows iTunes library for "sharing." Then have your new Mac look for shared music on the wireless network. iTunes on the new Mac should then "see" all your Windows music. As long as you have the Mac set up as "authorized" in your iTunes account, you should be able to make copies or duplicates using iTunes of all the tracks in your library that are stored on your Mac hard drive.
Hopefully this will work for you. I have not tried it, but from my knowledge of iTunes, it should work. Keep us posted.
    Cheers,

  • Options to transfer music files from Windows Vista pc

Looking to buy some kind of Mac notebook, probably a Powerbook I found. I have a nice library of 100gb+ of MP3 and M4A files that I've been playing through my iTunes for Windows and eventually to put on an iPod Touch. What are the ways, and recommened ones, to get my files over to a Mac? Cost is a big consideration as I am not working now and having to sell things even to buy the Mac.
What about blank dvd's or cd's? Or MobileMe? They offer a 60-day trial on MobileMe but don't know much about it. Thought about hooking up external drive to the Windows pc, but then would the Mac read those files formatted for Windows?

Just a word of caution! Arnie has given you some excellent links and advice and there should be no problem in transferring your music. But are you sure you really want to get a PowerBook? They were great machines in their day and those of us who still have them just can't seem to let them go. However bear in mind that they run on PowerPC processors, since abandoned by Apple in favour of Intel. Depending on what you want to do with a notebook you will find this change has impacted quite a bit on keeping an old PowerBook running in the 2011 environment, They really are becoming legacy items.
Also 100Gb of iTunes music is quite a lot - check out the size of the drive on your intended purchase first otherwise you may have to resort to keeping the library on an external drive anyway.

  • How do I move music folders with individual music files from windows 7 to itunes folder so that they are recognizable and playble?

How do I move music folders with individual music files from windows 7 to the itunes library so the files are usable in itunes?

All of the following programs should work with Vista.
Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.

  • I transferred big files from windows to my macbook, should I install anti-virus on macbook pro?

I transferred big files from windows to my macbook because I wanted to retire my old PC, should I install anti-virus on macbook pro because of those files I moved? Would you recommend? Or should I feel comfortable since I'm using OS X Mavericks? Anybody with the same case? Thanks.

Files moved from a Windows machine may contain malware, but that malware would not be a threat to your Mac. Windows malware cannot infect a Mac.
As for protecting your Mac against Mac malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.

  • How do I share files from Windows Vista to a Mac with Lion OSX?

How do I share files from Windows Vista to a Mac with Lion OSX?  I'm having SO much trouble with this!  Any help would be appreciated!!!

In a finder window, under 'shared' you should be able to see the windows computer name, click on it and connect to it. I am assuming here you have sharing turned on and permissions granted on the windows computer.
Will add a note though, I have frequently accessed files from a PC on the LAN using XP, not vista.

  • Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP

I'm running a English Windows Vista Ultimate and just bought a
ENGLISH Windows 8.1. I've downloaded the WET for Windows vista and tried to complete the second portion of the transfer by specifying the saved .MIG file WET created. Then I got the error message: "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer
files from Windows Vista or Windows XP".
The truth is, Microsoft was too busy integrating special effects to it's operating system and claimed it as fully polished instead of making sure built-in tools were worth using.
Another harsh reality is that THERE IS NO WAY TO TRANSFER a file from Windows Vista to Windows 8. That's because engineers didn't even bother to make that possibility happen. Just Google: "Transfer from windows vista to windows 8" and you'll see
there are no relevant Microsoft web page about this.
Worse, Microsoft is giving excuses. To solve this issues, they came with a toolbox of fake scenarios in order to confuse clients even further, while they know damn well the Windows Easy Transfer is NOT EASY and certainly in multiple cases
DOES NOT TRANSFER jack to begin with.

    I somewhat agree with you.
Trying to transfer from 7 to 8.1 and although it looks like the "7" side of the equation is working, the "8" side isn't.
"7" is trying to connect to "8" but "8.1" is being just plain stupid.
Not even sure why the MIG file step is even necessary if all I want to do is transfer one file between two machines.  Said file is really BIG, or i'd just use my network, and the "8.1" rig doesn't have a dvd reader...
Per the MIG step... my file again, is big... I'd need to "mig" this file just to send it? Can't even get to the step where I'd mig-it and if i did, how long would that take?
So this is what progress is all about... geez... gimmie a NULL MODEM CABLE !!!

  • How to convert WMA files (from Windows Media Player) to play in iTunes

How do I convert WMA files (from Windows Media Player) to now play in iTunes?

Use Edit > Preferences > General tab > Import Settings to set your desired import format and bitrate. Note there is no point converting 128k wma into 320k mp3, you'll just get bigger files with no improvement in quality. Once you have set your import settings just drag & drop the files you want converted into iTunes.

  • Moving music files from windows media player to itunes

when I first got my ipod, only half of my music files moved from windows media player into itunes. Is there anyway I can import the rest of the music from windows media player into Itunes? I have tried using the import function and add file or folder to library and they do not seem to work!

iTunes will not accept Window Media player tracks that are protected. If you imported them off your own CDs, did you check the option to apply protection to them? If so, your only choice is to re-rip those CDs.

  • Transfer music file from windows to itunes.

    Hi,
I have all my music on my music folder on windows. How can I transfer them to itunes without losing the album's name?
    thanks
    V

iTunes should read the mp3 tags of the file and not the filename itself. Open itunes and go to the preferences window. Carefully read through all the tabs and pay special attention to the option marked keep my music folder organized and copy music to my itunes folder.
I think you should uncheck both of these options (at least for now). Drag one test file into the itunes library and see how it is displayed there. Keep in mind that if you right-click -> get info on the song you can modify the data stored in the tag (this can be very tedious with thousands of songs). If the song displays correctly, try a few more just to be sure.
If you are satisfied then reconsider how you want itunes to handle your music. Personally I have both options checked off because I don't mind it organizing my files and I like to know that it copies music I add to it so that I can keep the original file unmodified on my desktop, or whereever.
Depending on the size of your music library and the amount of free hard drive space, I can make further suggestions for the order in which you import your music into itunes and modify its preferences.

  • Transferring music/files from Iphone 3gs to new computer

    Hi
I have previously transferred music form my ipod to an old laptop, both have since broken or been updated.... so lost the info for the website yamipod...I have had a look to help move everything but for some reason it doesn't work on my computer!! Wrong file and I tried installing two of three recommnded programs (FinalTorrent was one) it still wont let me do it....
I also checked out (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1202) but it doesnt give me the options as shown on screen...
I don't know if I'm being thick (pregnancy brain!!) or not but i really need easy to follow help to save my music on my iphone!
    Thanks Jules

    Hi Jules,
You must use iTunes software only for syncing music to your iPhone. Yamipod is a third party iPod manager not supported by iTunes.
Since iTunes is dependent on your internet connection, I doubt that FinalTorrent will work.
Make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for an iPhone 3GS.
    iPhone 3GS Tech Specs
    Windows system requirements
    PC with USB 2.0 port
Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
iTunes 9.2 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access

  • Files from Windows Vista do not open in Bridge CS5

I am having trouble opening my images from Window Explorer level with Bridge.
I tried to open my jpgs with "open with" option  and my PC does nothing. Same happens when I double click the raw images.
I have my jpgs assigned to open in windows but I assigned my raw files to open in Bridge CS5 unfortunately raws will not open after double click.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks

Perhaps it is just semantics, but you want the double click to open in Photoshop CS5 and not Bridge.  Same thing with the raw it should open in ACR and not Bridge, as Bridge is just a browser.
With your raw problem.  If you open photoshop and click help/about plug-in/camera raw you should get one version listed.  Most camera raw problems result from ACR in wrong folder, or more than one version in the folder.

  • Transfering Music Files From Internal Hard-drive to External Drive

Per the instructions in a Missing Manual Book, I copied my itunes music folder from my internal drive to my new, portable external drive. The files copied fine, but the book said all I needed to do to insure file recognition was to change the location in the itunes>preferences>advanced location, which I did. But the only way the files are recognized by itunes is to, song by song, direct itunes to the new file. Is this really the only way to have it recognize the files? Is there no automatic method? The book implies that all is needed is changing the preferences location.

I'd make sure that the 'Keep iTunes folder organised' setting is on. (Preferences>Advanced>general)
Failing that, make sure that the 'Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library' setting is also on.

  • Music bought from iTunes a few years ago won't play on iPhone 4s

I've found that certain tracks that I bought from iTunes a few years back, all protected MPEG-4 audio files, won't play on my iPhone 4s. They play fine in iTunes on my computer, but when the track comes up on my iPhone it will simply run through the time of the song but no music will play. In some cases, I've had two versions of a song by the same name and it played the wrong version of the song with the correct name and album cover.
I've tried resetting the phone, as well as taking all the music off of it and resyncing it. Nothing seems to work. Will restoring the phone really help? This problem first arose after I updated my iPhone to 5.1.1.

I bought an iPhone 5 and could not add music to it. Same problem: grey songs. After hours searching forums and blogs I found this solution. Works for me! Now I manually add songs using iTunes and no problem. Hope it helps.
    1. Download and install iExplorer http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/
    2. Plug in device first, then open iExplorer
    3. Delete the iPhone\Media\iTunes_Control folder (you may want to copy this, just in case)
    4. Restart the iPhone / iPad
    5. Start iTunes. Not restore iPhone from back up, select New iPhone (don't worry, you will not lost apps or data on your iPhone doing this)
    6. Add music manually with iTunes

  • Linking music files from Windows Media Player to Itunes

How do you link music between WMP (this is where I download my music) and ITunes without having to copy all the files so I don't need to use up hard drive space?

iTunes will not accept Window Media player tracks that are protected. If you imported them off your own CDs, did you check the option to apply protection to them? If so, your only choice is to re-rip those CDs.
