Transfering a few TV shows to External drive?

Hi,
I have a MacBookPro which is about 2 1/2 years old. I need to buy some TV shows from iTunes but I only have about 10 GB left in my laptop. I want to keep my iTunes in my laptop but keep some of my old TV shows that I bought from iTunes and don't want to watch for a while in the external drive. Can I do that? Is there a way to just drag the shows to external drive?
I really appreciate the help. I will buy a new MacBPro but can't afford for another year

yes, you urgently need to make room on your startup disk ! check this:
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
With your 19.7GB of free space, you should be OK. Usually it's best to not state a percentage, but state an amount of free space. There's a big difference in having 10% free space (20GB) on a 200GB hard drive compared 10% (4GB) to a 40GB hard drive.
Look at these links about freeing up more space.

yes. try this user tip:
In iTunes 9.
iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Set the iTunes media folder location to the external.
Then select the movie files (or any files in iTunes) and right click Consolidate.
This will copy only the movies to the external location.
After it finishes, iTunes prefs -> Advanced and set the iTunes media folder location back to the internal. This will tell iTunes to use the internal drive for new files.
You can then delete the movies from \Music\iTunes\ on the internal to free up space.
To copy a movie back to the internal, simply right click - Consolidate (since you pointed iTunes back to the internal).
just edit these instructions to meet your needs.

If you right mouse and select Get info it will show you the Apple ID used to purchase these songs.
Usually the name of an apple id is based on the email. So knowing that you may have forgotten the Apple ID password.
You can request a new password here http://www.apple.com/support/appleid/

  • HT4527 I transferred my items media to an external drive, but found that there was a file left on my PC that was full of album artwork.  Is there a different function required to move artwork?

I transferred my itunes media folder to an external drive so I could save space on my PC.  Some time after I did this, I found a folder still itunes still on my PC.
Inside it had a folder called Album Artwork that was filled with files I could not open, but I assume belong to the songs I had moved.  There are also other files in this PC folder that have moblie apps, previous itunes libraries, as well as a few items listed as itunes database files and a bunch of .tmp files.
Did I do something wrong in moving my songs?
I cannot understand why all of this data still exists on my PC when I had moved the media folder to another hard drive.
When I try to get artwork for new songs, they go still to this PC folder.  Can anyone offer me any guidance?
    Thanks!

I think I see what you are getting at....If I moved the entire itunes folder and then redirected itunes to the new location of the media file, everything would be in the new location.  Right?  I didn't realize that artwork was stored seperately from songs...am I hearing you correctly?

  • Storing movies and tv shows on external drive.

I have moved my itunes music library to an external drive as i was runnig out of space. I'm i right in thinking this only moves my music files to this drive and keeps my movies and TV shows on my internal drive? After buying an apple tv and loading up more movies my hard drive is filling up fast.
Is it possible to store these file on the extrernal drive and still be sync'd with the Apple TV in the same way my music is?
I want to use the Apple TV as a library of my moves and don't want to stream

When you import something to iTunes you can decide whether or not to have files automatically copied to the iTunes Music library or just links to their location elsewhere.
As you probably know this is under iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>General
and selected with the 'Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder when importing' tick-box
When importing new CDs the imported files will automatically go into the iTunes Music library.
If you import pre-existing files from somewhere else on the hard drive either from the menus or by dragging and dropping, then they are governed by the preference set regardless of whether or not they are movies/tv shows or music files.
So if you had 'copy to iTunes Music folder' option set any movies you added will have been copied into the 'Music folder' which is now perhaps a bit of a misnomer and effectively a 'Media folder'.
Simplest way to check if your movies are in the 'iTunes Music folder' or not is to select one by right clicking and choose 'Show in Finder' for Mac or the equivalent Windows option which I've forgotten, but basically opens the folder where the movie is actually stored.

  • Saving tv shows on external drive

Is there a way to save some of the bigger files (like tv shows and movies) on an external drive?
I have about 3 seasons of tv shows on my laptop and it's eating up a lot of room. I have an external usb 2 drive that i'd like to put them on. Any way to do that?

I added an external drive when I really began running out of disc space because of all the TV episodes I was downloading. Here's what I did:
I created folders in the new external drive that mirror the scheme of the iTunes files on your hard drive. For instance, if your external drive is mapped to F, you would create the following folders:
    F:/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies
    F:/iTunes/iTunes Music/TV Shows
    - Drop your movies into the "movies" folder, and your TV shows (in their respective series folders) into the "TV Shows" folder. Once you're sure they're copied over, you can go back to the C: drive and delete the files you just copied to your external. Don't forget to empty the Recycling Bin, though if its a big hunk, it may indicate the files are too large and will just be deleted without passing Go or collecting $200.
    - Now, go back into iTunes and delete all of the items you just moved from your library listing. The links won't be any good anymore, and would just confuse you.
    - Once you've done that, go into iTunes menu bar and select "File --> Add Folder to Library" and select the folders you just created in your external drive. Depending on how much you've moved, it may take awhile, but when you're finished, they should all be in there now under TV Shows or Movies in your library. They won't show up in "Purchased" anymore, however. New episodes and movies will continue to download to the C:drive (or wherever your main iTunes application files are living), but you can periodically just move them on over to the external to make sure you don't run out of room.
One note of caution: Depending on how many USB peripherals you might be using, and how your drives are mapped, you might experience problems then connecting your iPod. Basically, if you have more than a couple of external drives or similar devices that take up a mapping drive, it may balk when you connect and ask you to restore your iPod software. I recently had this happen when I added an external drive, and went through 9 kinds of frustration before I figured out how to make it work. Basically, you'd have to change where your iPod maps to when its plugged in. If you have issues, just post them, and I can give you a solution for that as well.
    Hope this helps!

  • I wish to move movies/tv shows to external drive

I have less than 10% of my internal 2T drive available, and wish to move my movies and TV shows to an external drobo, I don't care if my music collection moves or not.
What is the best way to do this and keep iTunes happy? I tried copying the entire folder to the Drobo, but the software did not seem to like that approach.

  • Transferring large amount of data to external drive

Hi I have 6.53GB of Data on my Mac Pro which is for a Windows XP system! I have attached an NTFS formatted 20GB empty external drive to my system via USB. When I pick up my file to transfer to the external drive a transparent 'no entry' logo appears and I cannot drop it onto the external drive. I'm aware of the 4GB limit using the FAT format but the external disk is definitely NTFS. I have considered using a dual layer DVD but would that work if I'm having these problems now? I would far prefer to just copy this to the external drive as DL DVD's are expensive! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The issue is that the Mac OS can't write to NTFS drives without 3rd-party software.
This software can do it, but I'm not sure if it's SL compatible yet:
    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
There is also NTFS-3G, which is not SL compatible at this time:

  • Transferring video files from camera to external drive.

    Forum,
How do I transfer video, or indeed can I, to an external drive using Firewire?
I can connect the camera with Firewire 400 to the computer and the external drive with F/wire 800.
I have not tried because i do not want damage my kit.
    Thank you
    Michael Craven.

Just connect the drive and see if you can capture to it... many times you can, but sometimes you can't... depends on the FW bridge in the drive. If it's fast enough, you won't have a problem. You won't hurt anything trying at any rate. If it drops frames or something, then a firewire card added to your system to create a second firewire bus will fix you right up.

  • My 'start up drive' is almost full, and running slow.  I transferred all my music to an external drive, but still getting messages.  What is the best way to get rid of unneeded files.

I am deleting or burning to CD photos I dont use regularly.  What else can I do?
Does a full hard drive and slow machine warrent upgrading to a new one?

I have 13 GB free out of 250GB
That's tight. Rule of thumb for a start up drive - the one inside the Macbook - is to have atleast 15% free at all times.
For getting rid of unnecessary stuff off the internal drive, I suggest you try Omni Disk Sweeper. It will give you a complete inventory of your drive, and purge what you ask it to delete. But be patient when it runs, give it time to do a full sweep.
It's the second one on this page: http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Hard drives are not that expensive. If I were you I would invest in another external drive for your library.

  • Catalogs,my external hard drive used to show up as its own folder in my folders but for some reason it now showers up as an extension of my internal HD for my Mac . In finder it shows my External drive is a folder called volumes, along with my Mac hard dr

For some reason my external hard drive no longer shows  up as its own folder, instead it shares a folder named volumes with my Macs HD, whats the best way to move it.?

I have the same problem.  Let me know when you find a fix.

  • Transfering entire 137 GB to new external drive

I just bought a new Maxtor 500 GB external hard drive to house my music library. I transfered everything from one to the other (it only took 45 hours!) Now before start using the files in their new location, how can I be sure the "date added" etc, info will be retained, and do I have to delete all the files from my library and then re-import the 137 GB lot back in? How long will that take? Is there an easier and quicker way to do this?
    Any suggestions are apprieciated.

Is there an easier and quicker way to do this?
It's generally best and easiest to ask these questions BEFORE you move stuff.
    I transfered everything
    What is "everything"?
If you moved the entire iTunes folder (as you should have), simply start iTunes holding the Option key and select Choose existing library, then select the iTunes library file on the new drive.

  • Transfering hardrive from dead computer to external drive and then onto a macbook pro

Hello! I'm trying to save my hard drive from a dead macbookpro. I removed the hard drive and have the appropriate adapters to attach it to my LaCie. The instructions call for 'erasing' the contents in order to copy it. Anyone have confirmation this is correct? Or have a better set by step instruction? Thanks!

Thanks for the speedy response Kappy! This may be long winded.
Basically, I spilled liquid on my old mac book pro, so I removed the harddrive and according to the utility tests, nothing has been damaged. What I'd like to do is transfer the contents of that hard drive onto my external LaCIe drive and then essentially drag and drop items onto my new computer. I do not want to put the old hard drive into the new computer though.
I bought a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter from Vantec and I believe I set up everything correctly. I can see the hardrive when I got into Utilities, although I cannot click on the contents. Some the instructions from the adapter kit do not match some of the options on my disk utility. The instructions are to  to'open the Type pop up menu in the Volume Info area and choose MAC OS extended format and then initialize' Unfortunately, I do not see those options. The option to format instructs to Click on the Erase tab, assign a new name to the drive and supposedly the drive will appear on my desktop. I'm just worried it will actual erase the contents of the hardrive as opposed to letting me drag and drop or just copying it onto my desktop...

  • Transferring projects and events to new external drive

I have been using a 2 TB external hard drive to create both personal and commercial videos using iMovie '11. Due to space limitations on the 2 TB drive, I now want to transfer the commercial video projects and events to a new 1 TB external hard drive. I started by copying one project (and associated events). I then copied a second project that uses clips from the same events as the first project. As a result, I now have two copies of the events--one copy associated with project 1 and a second copy associated with project 2. Consequently, the 1 TB hard drive is filling up fast with twice as many events as I originally had before starting the transfer process. I also have a third related commercial project that I want to transfer to the new drive, but I'm afraid I'm going to fill up the drive sooner than I expected with a third set of events. Ugh!
In effect, I want to move multiple related projects that use clips from the same events from one drive to another without losing associativity and without creating extraneous events. I would appreciate any help.

    Hi
Yes there are somer IMPORTANT steps to take and not to take.
    • DO NOT - Move or alter any folder named iMovie Events or iMovie Projects on Desktop/Finder.
If You do - iMovie get's confused and it might not allways be repairably.
    • DO
    The external hard disk
MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX(DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO !
SHOULD BE - a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly
Moving Events and Projects - ARE DONE in the iMovie Program/Application and in resp. window
Just drag from one hard disk HERE to the other one and new iMovie Proj/Event folders will
be created and iMovie will find them.
AND - answer the choise if You want a full Move or a Copy made.
(Event's window can be changed to view Yearly - or - Yearly per hard disk connected
top right hand corner of window - click small hard disk symbol.)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Transferring movie or TV show to hard drive

I am going on several long flights and rather than drag along several DVD movies or TV show, I was wondering if there was a way to transfer movies to my hard drive. I remember reading that this save battery life

Searching in the iPod area is a good idea to read about this question, asked approximately 1000 times a month (mostly to get to iPod but first the media has to come....).
Note mentioning MTR as above as it defeats copy protection is now not allowed under the new TOS.
Note if you were to heed the above advice there is no need to use VLC to play them as the Apple DVD player plays the resultant VIDEO_TS folder as an ordinary matter.
If you have the time prior to travel make these into MP4 files for iPod with MPEG Streamclip as they become right tiny ( a typical movie will be under 750MB) vs. the DVD content which will be in the 4-8 GB range. Lots more on your drive to watch and the quality is fine. Even 320X240 is amazingly good quality. I do this every trip - on the hotel TV they still look good - the last hotel was a 27" TV.
