Transfering a playlist to external harddrive

Several months ago I moved my entire iTunes folder to an external harddrive. For a few weeks I was without the drive, though, so the new songs I imported got saved to my hard drive. To make things easier, I put all of these new songs in one playlist.
How can I just transfer the one playlist over to the external harddrive? I don't want to have to go through the procedure of moving the entire database again, as wouldn't that create duplicate copies of the files?
Thanks!

Well, I went ahead and just copied folders from my C Drive and pasted them into the respective artist folders in the external drive. So, that's taken care of.
My question NOW is, how can I change it so that iTunes goes to the external drive to play these tracks now, rather than playing them off the C drive? I figure I could just delete them off the C drive, and then when iTunes tries to find the file, direct it to the external drive? Or is there a way you can do this without deleting the C drive file (you know...just in case!)?

I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library to my External Harddrive, but it says it is going to take one day. I dont feel like USB 3.0 should take one day to transfer 50gb of pictures... Any fix to this problem?

    Ignore it
The finder is a very poor estimated of time - it will change radically as it progresses - and however long it takes is how ling it takes - there is no way to change that
Is the external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)? - to use the iPhoto library it must be that format

    That is a strange problem.
But, since you have tried it with different drives, then there is some common factor here.
First, I would try repairing permissions Using Disk Utility.
Go to Hard Drive --> Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility
Then, select your hard drive on the left (your main hard drive), and then choose "repair permissions".
Second, try a restart. If you haven't rebooted your computer in a while, then this may clear out any weird bugs that have cropped-up.
Third, I would try a new cable. Make sure it is a good high-quality cable. And, perhaps even test it with another computer.
Fourth, I would go into the System Preferences ( menu, then System Preferences), and then the accounts section.
Set up a new user account, and try logging into that account and try it again. Perhaps something in your settings is corrupted.
    I hope this helps.

  • Transferring home videos on DVD to external harddrive through macbook

I want to transfer all our old home movies which are all on DVD to an external harddrive. I try dragging but that didn't work. I made a copy of the video and dragged to hard drive but that also didn't work. What do I do?

Hi - The movies were from several different video cameras all 8mm tapes originally. My husband burned the tapes onto DVD-Rs. I tried just dragging the video onto the external hard drive and I got an error message that says" The DVDVRF430 can not be moved because the OneTouch 4 (name of hard drive) can not be modified". I tried dragging it to a folder within the harddrive and got same message but said the folder could not be modified.
I then went into Imovie and played around. There is a way to copy the video through Imovie but the only option it gives me is to copy it to my mac harddrive. I thought I would be able to direct it to the external harddrive because It has a pull down bar but the only option is the mac internal drive.I have 19 years of videos and do not want them on my MAC harddrive but if I have to load them to the Mac then take them off to put on external I will - just seems like a long process of extra work.
I originally had a PC and all of the documents on the harddrive were from my PC which died. Is it possible that I need to do somehting to the the harddrive to recognize the mac? I have opened files on the external harddrive and edited them on the Mac and then saved them with no problem. I have had to change the programs a bit to make them compatible since many are older Word or Microsoft Works files but that is all.

  • When transferring to new Mac using external harddrive

I'm trying to transfer my information using migration assistant. However, my external harddrive can not be located?

Migration assistant is designed to transfer data from one Mac to another Mac.
Since you are using an external HDD, you will have to connect it to your MBP and manually transfer the data via drag and drop.  I am assuming that the HDD is in a format compatible with a Mac.

  • Transferring Video Projects to and External Harddrive

Can I transfer a video project to an external harddrive and delete the original from my computer. If so, whats the best way to do it"?

    csu1970
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
Depending on the circumstances yet to be exchanged, the easy way out would seem to be to archive the existing project via the program's Project Archiver/Copy Option with the Copied Folder pointed to the external hard drive. That folder will contain the project file (project.prel) and its assets including copies of source media that went into the project. Then you can delete the project file, its assets, and source media from the Local Disc C. DO NOT DELETE SOURCE MEDIA ON LOCAL DISC C THAT ARE ALSO BEING USED IN ANOTHER ACTIVE PROJECT.

After that you can work with that particular program from that location.
Before you start a new project, you can set the project Save In: (new project dialog) and program assets (including Scratch Disks) to the external hard drive, best to its own folder.
In this type of situation, the prime concern to to avoid media disconnect issues. If you move or delete source media that went into a project after the project's save/close, you are going to have major problems with "Where is file....?" and the like.

  • HT1751 I have done the above steps but I would like to know if everytime I sync will it create a backup on my external harddrive

I have windows 7 64 bit and followed the steps in the article.  What I would like to know is if I was to sync my ipad would the backup file be created on the external harddrive automatically or do I have do these steps at least once a week.
Everytime one syncs the ipad it creates a backup in the following directory
    c\users\owner\appdata\roaming\apple computer\backup
is there anyway I can change this and have it automatically backup everytime I sync the ipad.
    thanks

I never lost any media mind you just the library file that tell iTunes where everything lives.
On this point, you can keep a copy of of the "Itunes Music Library.xml" file, which contains the itunes metadata for your music library (songs & playlists).
Obviously, you would still need the files themselves for this to be of any worth, but if you ever find yourself in the same situation you can use the .xml file to recreate iTunes as it was. Keep in mind that you must import the .xml file into iTunes for this to work, you cannot simply move it via the finder.

  • How do I restore files from External Harddrive - Disk warrior cannot rebuild

    Hi Guys
I have a External Hard drive that I can see via Disk Ulitity and shows in finder - but I cannot see the actual files and directories, hence not being able to copy them to a new external hard drive
When I connect the External Harddrive to my Macbook I'm getting the message
"OS X can't repair the disk "Untitled"
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Disk Utility says I have free space so it is recognising the files.   I have Time Machine backups on this external harddrive "Untitled" that I need to critical use.
Basically how do I get the files off this external harddrive before it fully stops working? I have tried rebuilding the disk with Disk Warrior but this does not work.
Thank you anyone! I hope someone can help!

Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

  • Transferring Itunes Library to External HD  - BUT not so straighforward

Oh dear, here I am again asking q's about this thing again. Wish it was more straightforward and I really appreciate any help. Yes, I've been searching for a solution but all the advice i find online doesnt seem to specifically fit my situation - and I'm worried if I do the wrong thing, itunes won't be able to find the new locations - (i'll have to locate each individual file for Itunes) - and/or I'm going to end up with lots of duplicates.
Right then - so my Internal HD is nearly full and need to transfer all my podcasts to an external HD. I also wish for any updates/downloads to the podcasts are located at this new location.
All my Music, is already NOT on this Internal Hard-drive, however the External Hard that all these files are on has, just today, given real cause for concern that there is a problem with the drive.
Itunes recognises that all my Music files are on this external harddrive
So, I've just got a new external hard-drive and wish therefore to transfer all the Music files and podcasts from where they are all located as detailed about.
At present, I'm transferring ALL the music files from the old Ext HD to the NEW external HD.
All my podcasts remain on my Internal HD.
    So what to do?
    Many thanks

So move (which since this is between drives is actually copy and then delete):
    USERS/cjb/Music/Itunes/itunesMusic/Podcasts/ArtsandIdeas
    to:
    /Volumes>WDPassport/AUDIO/MyMusic/INDPAKPOP/ARRAHMAN/Taal
I don't usually move files between drives after I have added them to iTunes. What you many need to do is delete the concerned items from iTunes, then add them again from thir new location. With your settings (which I use) iTunes is good about keeping track of files when moved about inside a drive but not between drives. I suspect that once you delete them from your internal drive (as part of the moving) iTunes will say it cannot find them anymore. So you'll need to add them again.
One other thing you could try (might work) is one of [Dougscripts|http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scriptcount.php?sortBy=Name& op=y] called "Move files to Folder" Again, I haven't tried this between drives (use it frequently inside my main drive) but it may preclude you having to delete the item from iTunes. It's possible you may just end up with a copy on the external and internal (and you can just delete the internal), or it might even be smart enough to handle that and it will do it all for you. I'd try it on maybe one file first, then use command+r on the file in iTunes to reveal where the referenced file is located. After that check if there is still one on your podcasts folder on the original drive.

  • External harddrive is slow

    Hello there
I have a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz with Mac OS X 10.5.4, and Im experiencing slow data transfers from my Western Digital My Book 500gb external harddrive. This results in video-lag when trying to play dvd or other video files from that harddrive. I have searched forums for help on this, but cannot find any solutions. Do you know what I can do to fix this? By the way, the filesystem is ntfs-3g.

I don't believe it is a fragmentation problem. It is extremely unlikely that a drive used to store large video files would become fragmented enough to cause your problem. It sounds as if your computer is not recognizing your drive as USB2.0 and is mounting it as a USB1.1 drive. The issue is addressed in this thread, unfortunately there is no permanent solution as of yet. Some have reported that unmounting, disconnecting, and reconnecting the drive fixes the problem temporarily.
    Good Luck!

  • Using an external harddrive with two different Macs

I have an iMac flat screen, 800 MHz. I've had great luck with this computer until now. Yesterday I purchased a new iPod Video not realizing it would not support FireWire. My old iPod's jack became very loose, so I finally relented and bought a new iPod. I know that there's no way to upgrade my USB to 2.0; however, all my music is on an external harddrive. Can I connect it to my wife's new Mac Book Pro, set up playlists on her iTunes, and refresh my iPod's playlists that way, but still use my external harddrive on my iMac? I'm worried about losing information, specifically all my music. I can upload music to my iPod using my iMac, but it's so slow (10mbs). With my old iPod I could upload lots of music in a few minutes, now it takes hours.

Have a look under the "itunes" help forum.. there you will be able to find (or do a search for) keeping our music library on an external hard drive. Configure your wife's Macbook Pro to use the library on the external drive and you shouldn't have trouble. I would set up another user account on the Macbook Pro so that your wife is still able to have a music collection of her own. Good luck!

  • Problems transferring Backups to new External HD using Disk Utility restore

I'm having issues using Disk Utility to transfer my backups to a new disk.
I am transferring data from a 250GB external harddrive to a new completely zero'ed 1TB Iomega external harddrive. Both Harddrives are connected via USB. On my old 250GB HD i have a few folders containing about 100GB of data (raw video footage) that are not in the "Backups.backupdb" folder.
I follow the tutorial in item 18 of the FAQS on this forum exactly (except i didnt check erase destination) but i get an error message each time after about 3 minutes:
"Could not restore - Operation not permitted"
This is what my log says:

I can see from this that it is having issues with a file in the destination:
    /Volumes/Untitled/Backups.backupdb/Mac/2009-04-15-054708/Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional/Acrobat Distiller 7.0.app/Contents/Frameworks/AdobeACE.framework/AdobeACE
This file is in the first Backup i ever made and all subsequent backups. So i went and looked at this backup through the time machine application and deleted this file from the backup and all subsequent backups. However when i then did the restore again i got the same error message and when i looked at the log it was identical except it had issues with a different "AdobeACE.framework" file from another Adobe CS3 program. I dont want to go through and delete all these types of CS3 files from my backups for obvious reasons, i would much rather understand what the issue is and know whether there is a way round it.
It may well be simply because i have not checked the "erase destination" box before restoring but somehow i doubt this is the issue as the new 1TB HD has already been "zero'ed" as explained earlier.
Any help would be appreciated guys.

check the box to erase destination. the fact that you zeroed it out makes no difference. this is a known issue and checking that box was recommended for a reason.

It is else it would not have been able to be selected to import.
The simple fact that it shows up in iTunes Search means it is in the iTune library.
It is a bug where some imports do not show up in the iTunes library (but they usually show up in Recently Imported playlist) until a restart of iTunes, which usually fixes it.

  • Formatting External Harddrive. What software to use?

I have an external harddrive, a ATA RAID drive, 600gb that I use for video editing. It is connected through a SCSI connection. Basically, it was having problems when I captured video, it would drop sync. So I am trying to format the harddrive to see if that will fix the problems. I will also use Disk Warrior on it to make sure that the disks are not bad. What software should I use to format the harddrive. I did an erase using the disk utility feature on the computer, but is there any other program I need to use. All of my files have been transfered to backup, so the RAID is cleaned from important files.

You can also use Disk Utility to format your drive, whether you want to partition it back out or keep it as a RAID.

  • Maintain two libraries with external harddrive

I just got a netbook for christmas and an external harddrive to backup my itunes and transfer it back and forth between the netbook and the home computer. I copied all of my itunes music via the method suggested in tech support to copy my files to my harddrive from my home computer. That went fine, but now I've connected my harddrive to my netbook and it seems my only option is to wipe out my netbook's library and put in the one from the home computer. Is there any way I can keep my netbook library and put my home computer files on my netbook? If not, do I have to wipeout my libraries everytime i add a new song?

I'm not sure of what Neil is suggesting, but he usually has good advice.
I would do things a different way, though. I would put the home PC's ITL file on the exHD.
Then you could shift-start itunes to either choose the home PC library file, or the netbook's library file.
    iTunes Library.ITL
That is the database that holds all the paths to the music files, ratings, playlists, etc.
To shift-start itunes, press *AND HOLD* the shift button while starting itunes. When prompted, browse to the ITL file for the library you want to use.
