Transfering complete library via home share

I have turned on home sharing on both my computers. However my complete library did not transfer over. Only 150 songs, nothing else, no movies, videos, books apps or anything. When i activated home sharing on the computers i checked every box to share. I bought a new computer and need to transfer everything to the ew computer and then deactivate the old computer. HELP !!!!!!

Accidently deleted itunes library via home share - Help!!

Hi there, I have just gone onto homeshare to get my iTunes library on my daughter's iphone. I then clicked edit and deleted the files that she didn't want on the phone, but it appears to have deleted all my iTunes library. Please help, Can I restore it? It's all my music, gone. Ouch - a double mistake.
Select the music folder in Finder before running TM and see if that gets you there.
If not, then double-click the TM volume icon on the desktop and migrate down to a folder that has a recent date on it that is before your accident.
Click the arrow on the left of that folder name and you will see Macintosh HD
Click the arrow on that directory
Click the arrow on Users
Click the arrow by your name
Click the arrow by Music
What you see is what you got.
Take it from there.
Don't do anything more than copy a file from the TM backup. *Do not* move or disturb it in any way. The copy may not be the entire set of items you want, but if they are there you should be able to retrieve them the proper way, using Finder and TM normally

HT3819 Permanently keep files on iPod & other computers via Home Share?

I just got the new iPod Touch iOS6 and I need it to synch with 2 computers (iMac and PC) and my old iPod touch.
I have my a home share set up on my iMac (iTunes 9.2) which has all my purchases over the last 6 years and its synched with my iPod Touch iOS4.
My iMac music library shows up on my Windows iTunes (10.5) via Home Share, but not the movies or TV shows. How do I get all the files (music, movies, tv shows) permanently over to the PC?

I have a rather odd problem. When accessing media via Home Share, I get no sound when watching video content. For audio-only files, the sound comes through fine.
Does anyone know what I can do to solve this?

You also need iOS4.2 as well as the iTunes downgrade.
If you look at the ATV specification you will see the file types it supports and you will find the ones that don't work are not to that specification.
So you will need to encode your MP4's with the H.264 codec and then they will work. Or you will have to drop your resolution down for MPEG4 encoding.
Apple probably did this so that streaming would be compatible with their products and work without any problems.

Just got an imac and am trying to transfer itunes library from Dell pc via home share method. All goes well but directions say to click the import button. I don't see an import button anywhere. If I close itunes on pc it also disappears from imac.

IOS devices can't see entire iTunes library via Home Sharing

Using both iPad 2 and iPhone 4s to view iTunes library on my iMac via Home Sharing. Both see very limited amounts of Artists/Albums from iMac library. Also, both see different Artist/Albums. p.s. I used Home Sharing for 3 yrs w/o problems, before this.

Can't watch rental on Mac after watching it on ATV via Home Share

A couple of times I've rented a movie from iTunes on my Macbook. When my family wants to watch it, I turn on Home Sharing and am able to use our Apple TV to select my computer, go to the 'Rentals' folder and view the movie.
However, when we've finished watching it, I can't view it on my Macbook anymore. I get a 'Could not play the rental because it is authorized to play on another computer or device'. Even if I turn off the Home Share and put the Apple TV to sleep, I still get this message.
Since I'm not actually "transferring" the movie file from my laptop to the Apple TV, I'm confused as to why I can't watch it on my laptop after we've viewed it on the Apple TV.
Renting movies is expensive, and you only get 24 hours to watch them. This technical issue is really causing problems for me. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Lots of new intermitant and odd network issues with the last two ATV updates. I know this sounds weird and makes no sense, but if you are using WiFi switch to wired or if wired switch to WiFi. It is too long winded to exmplain why. Give it a try and see if it helps.

The safest way to do this would be to copy your itunes library to an external drive. For the purposes of this excersize the new Laptop would be the external drive

Apple TV can't connect to library on Home Share

Recently I've run into a problem where my AppleTVs will not see our main library. We have two libraries that we share on our network, and most of the content is on our office computer named "iMac Library". Over the last two days, more often than not it will time out when trying to connect to that library, giving me the message that it can't connect and I should check my home sharing settings, etc. If I go into the office and shut down iTunes, then start iTunes again, it will see it fine. Is anyone else experiencing this? I've got two AppleTV 2s and one of the latest (1080p) AppleTVs (is this referred to as a AppleTV 3 or 2.1 or what?) and it does it on all three units.
Any help would be appreciated.

The iTunes shut down/restart method has worked 100% of the time for me, but it also seems to have not happened over the last 3-4 days as much. I'm used to Apple mysteriously applying patches to fix stuff while not even acknowledging it on the forums so maybe that's what happened here.
Best example of this was when an update broke the order of your TV shows, throwing any shows in iTunes totally out of alphabetical order and it was like that for a few weeks with zero acknowledgement from Apple. The only thing that made it bearable was that the forums errupted with people having the same issue, so you knew it was going to be addressed at some point. I'm worried that since there doesn't seem to be an outpouring of other users with the same problem that it might not be as widespread, and I don't really like the idea of a several hour call to tech support troubleshooting this.
I'll keep the thread updated with any changes, but for right now it seems like it may have fixed itself. Hope that is the case with your issue as well.

One iTunes account into two via home share

My wife and I have been sharing one iTunes account for years. We now have two iMac and so I'd like to separate into two accounts by retaining my original account on my imac and creating a new itunes account on her iMac. Her iMac is the one with the original account. Her ipod is tied to that computer and my account but I'd like her ipod tied to the new account so she can start making purchases that do not show up under my account and on my imac/ipad.
I understand that this process is not possible since apps and songs are liscensed under one user. However, I can easily redownload the apps my wife uses (15 or so, most of which are free). It's the iTunes store bought music I am unclear about.
I've done a bit of researching and have come to an idea that may work but I'd like feedback from those more in the know than I.
So, I'd like to run this process by all of you out there and ask if this sounds right.
My imac is all set with my account.
Wifes iMac: (Core i7, 10.6.8, current iTunes)
- Set-up wife's iMac with a new itunes account.
- Turn on that account in iTunes (authorize to computer to this new account)
- Home Sharing is on (purchased music on her computer under my account but not on my computer... I don't listen to Amy Winehouse)
- Connect her ipod (Touch gen 2) to her iMac and update as new account.
-this may delete all songs on her ipod but with home sharing can I just reload the music from the itunes library?
-Will I be able to load the store purchased music that resides on her imac onto her ipod touch with the new account on it?
- Or will she have to "authorize" each and every song as the ipod plays them???
– Redownload wifes previous free apps (downloaded under my name) under her new account.
The end result is I'd like any new purchases of songs or apps to be under her new account but still retain the music she purchased under my account on her ipod. Thus she can purchase on the device and it will update in itunes on iMac.
Does this make sense? Will this work?

I just got zapped by this crazy conundrum yesterday. I bought a used ipad1 thru EBay, for my son. He doesn't have home Internet or an up to date Mac so I set it up for him on my computer, unaware of the 90-day lockout rule. He owns a lot of iTunes downloads and I thought input would be faster to do it wired to my computer rather than via wireless direct onto his iPad, so I logged out of my account and into his. When I was done downloading his stuff I logged out of his account and got the 90-day lockout notice when I logged back into my account!
Thanks to all the posters here and other similar threads I learned what had happened, but until I got to this thread I thought I was locked out of ALL downloads, including new purchases. Thanks for the info about it just being for re-downloads. Fortunately, I am obsessive about backing up all new purchases in a master iTunes file. It just seems kinda stupid. What is the point in locking me out of things I already own? Anyway, thanks for the help!
Just tested on my computer and was indeed able to download a new album from iTunes on my account.
As far as sharing between devices is concerned, I have separate iTunes folders for each of 4 iOS devices I use, and simply use the "Add to library" feature in iTunes to copy anything I need to from one device's folder to the other. Works well.

Hi everyone, so basically the situation I'm in is I got a new PC laptop to replace my Macbook Pro and I want to be able to sync my iphone, ipod and ipad with the new library on the PC. I've already gone through transfering my entire library with all my music and apps etc using home sharing. My question is would I be able to connect my ios devices now and without a problem sync it with my PC? I'm afraid if I do connect it I will lose my contacts and pictures on my iphone.

Transferring iTunes Library via External HD?

I currently have a Windows XP computer, and will be buying a new Vista PC. I backup my music to an external HD, and I was wondering if I could transfer my music (both purchased from iTunes and ripped from my CDs) to the new computer via the HD. I only own a 4 GB Nano, which is not big enough to hold the entire Music library. My old computer has a CD burner, but not a DVD burner, so using CDs for transferring would be very tedious. Any comments, suggestions, advice? Thanks.

I get both options to choose as well as create. I used choose when I did mine and it worked.
I did copy her entire itunes library.

I just looked on my file I copied that worked on my user name and I have (3) Itunes Database Files on it.

Transfering aperture library via vault to new comp

I apologize in advance if my question already have been answered in another thread. But I couldn't find any threads matching my problems.
I recently bought the new iMac after my old 24" could not handle the pressure anymore. I wanted to move my aperture library from the old to the new. And ofcourse I wanted all info (adjustment changes and so on) to come with in the move. After reading a few threads on the subject I created a "Vault" that I later opened up in the new comp. At a fist glance everything looks great in aperture but when opening up a picture to make adjustments it says "image offline".
On my old comp I can see (where my pics are stored) two aperture files:
Aperture Library
Aperture Library_original
…so far so good.
But then that are tons (well, many) folders named like my projects in aperture. And not folders within the aperture library file but stand alone…if that makes any sense.
What am I doing wrong? I get all the pics over to my new comp with the help of Vault but can't edit any of my pics from a few months back (when for some reason aperture started to create folders outside the library file)
On my new iMac i have 2 files
Aperture Library
Aperture Library_old
...so no folders got transfered

It looks like your Aperture library were a referenced library. When you imported your image files you did not import the originals into the Aperture library, but stored them in folders outside the library. That are folders named like your projects that you are seeing. When Aperture needs to access the originals to render edited versions, it will reference the image files in those folders, see this section in the Aperture 3 User Manual: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images
When you create a vault, Aperture will only include images that you imported into the library, not the originals you stored outside. You need to copy the folders with projects as well to your new mac and reconnect them to the image versions, otherwise you will not be able to edit your images.
But it looks like you did create these folders outside accidentally and did not intend to use referenced original files. If that is so, I'd suggest to repair this, by consolidating your library.
Select the "Photos" view in the source list of your Aperture Library and select all your images at once.
Then use the command "File > Consolidate Originals" from the main menu bar. This will move (or copy) all referenced images from the folders outside into your Aperture library.
When you now create a vault, it will contain all images. Use this new vault to recreate your Aperture library on your new mac. You can also simply copy your Aperture library itself to your new mac. You do not need the detour using a vault.
BTW: Where Aperture will store the originals image files depends on the settings in the "Import" panel. Make sure the "Store Files" option is set to "In the Aperture Library".

Transfering iPhoto Library via DVD

Hello! I searched long and hard before posting this, but I couldn't find a good answer.
I bought a new macbook and I want to put the iPhoto '08 library from my iMac on it. I burned the events to a couple DVDs and imported them on the macbook, but there were several problems. All of the originals came up as new photos in each event (not just stored behind their modified) and it did not transfer the hidden photos. Moreover, all of the modified pics were placed in new events with the same title as the event on their originals! What a mess. I deleted the whole lot of them and created a new, unpopulated library.
It seems as if I need to transfer over the entire iPhoto library, not just the pics. It is 16GB. Should I buy a firewire cable, borrow and external HD or what? Will this even work? I want to copy the EXACT library over.

Where are you copying it to? Try to the desktop first. If that doesn't work try to the root level of your destination Mac, the same directory as the Applications folder. You may have to be logged in as an administrator to do that.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Music copied via home share not authorized

Copied a bunch of music, some old some new from my main machine to my Macbook pro. Got out on the road and it tells me that this computer isn't authorized to play some of the older tracks, I'm asuming those are the ones I never upgraded to iTunes plus and still have DRM wrapped around em.
This machine IS authorized! Typing in my password for those songs confirms this machine is authorized.
I deauthorized this machine and re-authorized it, and it still won't let me play or burn those tracks.
Weird!

1. Try turn Off Home sharing one at a time and turn it back On again.
2. If it doesn't help, switch internet security Off and do step 1 again.
