Transfering data from my Powerbook G3 to my PowerMac G5

Is there a way to directly connect my Powerbook G3 (OS X 10.2)laptop to my PowerMac so I can do a direct transfer off of my Powerbook? Or, do I have to download all items to an external drive and then upload to my desktop? Thanks.

OK, I gave it a try per the instructions supplied above. When my G5 was connected, it asked if I wanted to connect to the file server "xxxxxx's computer" It asked to connect as a guest or registered user. I do not have my G5 set up with any passwords at this time, so admin is in my users name with no password. I hit connect, and received a 'connection failed' msg, with an 'unknown user, incorrect password or login is disbled' msg.
When I did it as a guest, it asked me to 'select the volumes to mount', which I did. I received the error 'the folder drop box could not be opened because I do not have sufficient access privileges'. so, what am I missing here? thanks in advance for the help.

  • Retrieve Data from a PowerBook 170

This is a follow-up to my post "Powerbook 145 apparently dead". I elected not to replace the fuse because I feared I wouldn't be able to properly install the new one, or that the problem that caused the fuse to blow will still be there and the new one will blow too.
So, I bought a PowerBook 170 on eBay, swapped its hard disk for my old one, and booted it up. And sure enough, everything was exactly the way I left it 10 years ago. So now I'm wondering how to transfer those documents to my 2009 Mac Pro with OS 10.6 - not an easy tasks, considering these machines have no interfaces in common. Here are what I consider to be my three options (please advise if there are others) -
    1) Transfer using floppy disks: I have a working USB floppy drive and a copy of TransMac 9.1 on my Bootcamp Windows 7 installation (since 10.6 no longer reads the HFS disks, only HFS+), so I can transfer via floppy disks. This will be the least convenient but the cheapest since I already have all the equipment (except a stack of floppy disks).
    2) Attempt to burn a CD: I don't know of any CD-RW's that would work with the PowerBook 170 running System 7. If anyone does (and it's possible to find it at a reasonable price), please let me know.
    3) Attempt to network the PowerBook: I found a third-party SCSI to ethernet adapter that has a driver for System 7 and user testimonials that claim it works with the PowerBook 100 series. That might let the PowerBook onto the internet, but there's no guarantee the Mac Pro will be able to see it on the network. Also, this adapter is exceedingly rare and commands a substantial price on eBay.
    So... what should I do?
    Thanks in advance!

Update: It was a tedious process, but I have done it. I transferred everything from my PowerBook 145's hard disk using Method 1 as described in my original post. The gist of it is as follows:
    1) I saved everything from the old PowerBook to floppy disks, using segmented archives created by ZipIt 1.3.5 where necessary (i.e., a single document or program was larger than a floppy disk's capacity), including third-party system files.
    2) I imaged each disk using TransMac 9.1 running in Windows 7 on my Bootcamp installation.
    3) I consolidated the contents of all the individual disk images into one image using DiskCopy in Mac OS 9 on Sheepshaver (a very useful, albeit not very stable, PPC emulator, for those of you unfamiliar with it). This was not technically necessary, but it would be convenient when it came time to transfer the data in step 4.
    4) I created a disk image in BasiliskII (a 68k Mac emulator with a similar interface to Sheepshaver) and installed System 7.1 on it, which was the OS that my old PowerBook had. Then I transferred the contents of the disk image containing all my transferred files. The end result was a nearly exact (there may have been hidden files that didn't transfer, but otherwise it's complete) clone of my PowerBook's hard disk that's bootable in the emulator, so theoretically it will be forever accessible on my Mac Pro running OS X.
Anyway, hopefully this will help someone who's in the same position. On a side note, I really wanted to go with Method 3, but that SCSI to Ethernet adapter I found on eBay sold for $86 and would probably have necessitated the purchase of an intermediate machine, i.e. an early G3 PowerMac, to complete the process. This wasn't really an option as I'm still a starving grad student.

  • How do you stop 'Transferring Data from...' in toolbar on first page of a website - eventually stops but takes a minute then loases some images on a site when complete - other browsers are fine.

Only happens on index page of website - Firefox repeatedly says 'connecting to site/transfering data from site in the status bar for about a minute before finally 'done', then some images on the index page are missing. All other browsers are fine - how do you turn off this problem in Firefox - there is nothing to download on the index page, already displayed but can't continue unless you jump to another page in the site. Searched web and many references to this but no definate answer. Code is same on all pages of site, just the index page which hangs.

  • Transferring data from external hard drive to new replacement Macbook Pro...

    Hello,
Apple have arranged to give me a replacement Macbook Pro due to faults with hardware on the one I am currently using. I will be going to pick up the replacement Macbook Pro tomorrow morning.
As a complete novice I just wanted to check that I have backed up the data from my current laptop onto my Iomega external hard drive properly, as I am slightly nervous about losing all my work and not being able to transfer all my files onto my new Macbook Pro tomorrow.
I did a back up using time machine earlier today which took quite a long time and seemed to go successfully. Is this the right thing to have done to save all data from my current laptop onto the external hard drive?
Will transferring data from the external hard drive onto my new Macbook Pro be a simple task?
Will I have to reinstall all my software such as Logic and Pro Tools? Also will my preferences and settings for music software be changed?
    I'd greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Deena

    Well it's like this.
If your problem on the Mac didn't affect the software or the TimeMachine backup, then restoring from that using SetupAssistant (when you first set up a new Mac it will ask you to restore) should go fine.
HOWEVER, if there are software issues on the Mac that also transferred to the TimeMachine drive, that will only transfer them back onto your new computer.
You can't very easily just pick out the things you want to restore from TimeMachine with, it doesn't give that fine detail of control, and if it's really messed up, it might not restore anything at all.
The golden rule of backups is to maintain two separate and easily accessible hardware copies of your data off the machine at all times.
Since you don't know for sure if the TimeMachine restore is going to work as intended, and your only other source is going to disappear, I'd advise a additional backup of your Music, Documents, Pictures and Movie folders etc., to another regular external drive via regular drag and drop copy methods.
The operating system and programs can all be reinstalled from fresh sources on the new machine, provided you have the AppleID and password, license codes for your programs, email passwords and any other necessary information to re-establish the license on the new machine.
(In some cases licensed software HAS NOT transferred to a new machine with a TimeMachine restore and had to be reinstalled)
Some times you have to contact the developer or "uninstall" the licensed program so it sends a signal to their servers that the program has been removed, else your license code may not work on the new machine.
You might decide the new machine would be better off with a fresh install of your programs that you know are 100% compatible with Lion etc., leaving a lot of older stuff you installed over the years off the new machine, if you restore from TimeMachine, you don't have this option. You pretty much get all the crap along for the ride,
If your new machine gets all crapped up, then restoring Lion is going to going to be a tough challenge, as you need a strong reliable Internet connection to download a fresh copy of Lion from Apple servers (no more disks). Once you do that, then somehow you have to use third party software ($$) to cherry pick your files out of TimeMachines trap. More headaches than you anticpated, and likely a charge by a specialist.
So I'd advise another hard drive with a copy of just your files, just in case a crap-up occurs
You can restore Lion yourself if it craps up, install programs from fresh sources as you know how to do, use the old license codes and then return your files manually exactly back into their same Music, Pictures, Documents, and Movies (etc, not Library) folders as before.
The key to this manual method is to make sure to use the same user name as before, so all your file location data pathnames retained by program files like iTunes to where the songs are located on the drive, are matched. Once you open these programs and restablish the links in OS X, then you can move them around.
Some tricks, if you use iPhoto, you can right click "show package contents" and inside is a folder with your Originals, copy that out and you can reimport your pictures into the new iPhoto Library on the new machine.
So use TM if you dare, but prepared to do things manually is my opinion.
TM restores have not been all that reliable or dependable, the more messed up your machine is, the worst the restore seems to be.
    Good Luck

  • I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it

I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it?

    Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
    That should do it.

i just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. when i transferred data from my old macbook over, it created another user name (i called it "old computer"). That's actually good--I'm not going to be accessing old files frequently--except for music, which i want on my new user name. How do i move files from my "old comp" account to my new one? Is there a way to easily move large #'s of files, or just one by one? I've googled extensively but can only find instructions for OSX 10.6 and previous, which talks about the "Shared folder," which I can't seem to find.

Unless you transfer the files from Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant creates a new user with the data.
To transfer the files to your first user, you have to log on this new user, and copy all your files to /Users/Shard folder. This is a folder where you can put the files you want to share between two or more users, and all users can read and write in it.
After copying the files, go to your first user, open /Users/Shared folder, and copy the files to your user folders. If you migrated applications, you must know that they are stored in a common folder (/Applications), so you don't have to transfer them. To open /Users/Shared folder, open Go menu (in the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type the folder

  • Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Todd
Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

  • Problems transferring data from MacBook Pro to MacBook Pro

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and I am having problems transferring data from my old MacBook Pro. I am using an Apple Thunderbolt to FW adapter to hook both computers and I am using the Migration Assistant. Everything looked ok until the "Transferring Your Information" screen got stuck. It says that it is "Transferring your Application folder..." And it has been stuck for at least the last two hours giving a message that says "About 3 minutes remaining..." This is starting to get ridiculously annoying. Options?

I guess I am finding my own way as time progresses and frustration increases but these are two things that I have found so far:
    1. Transfering from one machine to another does not seem to be the most efficient way to do this so using the TimeMachine backup must be the way to go...
    HOWEVER
    2. In this process I also found another "complication" called: Legacy FaultVault - My computer is encripted and I used this now so called "Legacy FaultVault" app to do it (when it was no a Legacy!). The thing is that you can not transfer documents from your TimeMachine backup to your new Mac if the Legacy Fault Valut is active on your old machine so you first need to desactivate the encription. HOWEVER, this brought another issue...when I tried to desactivate the encription using the Legacy FaultVault screen I got a message saying that I did not have enough disk space to allow me to do that....Isn't that great??? This is a problem by itself and it seems to have some sort of solution I was reading about (not straight forward at all). What I am trying to do now is to copy the folder that contains my files and just paste them on my new machine to see if that works....it looks like my apps are on my new machine, unsure if they are working...need to test this next....
I guess the transfer machine to machine could have sorted out the conflict eventually...after tens of hours or maybe not! Who knows....
    A very frustrated Apple fan...
I love Apple products but this is an ISSUE...I feel like there is lack of adecuate documentation around to deal with this or the data transfering apps should be able to deal with this on a more efficient way....just saying...

Could that read " . . . could not access . . ."?  If so, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, or if that doesn't help, see #A1 there. Use the TM Buddy widget it details to copy and post the messages here.

Migration Assistant: Problems transferring data from PC (XP SP3) to new Mac Pro 2012 - can not get Migration Assistant to work as PC will not display verfify passcode
Hello, I am having problems migrating data from my old PC running XP (SP3) to my new Mac Pro 2012 using the Migration Assistant.
    - I downloaded and installed the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple
    - My Mac recognized PC and displays passcode
    - The sasscode does not show / display on my PC
    - My Mac is then stuck in "authenticating" loop and the PC is stuck "waiting for Mac to connect."
    - Both computers are connected on same network (have connected PC on WIFI and using ethernet to Reuter)
I have looked on support site and only response I saw says to reinstall Windows Migration Assistant (which I have done)
Any ideas?  If cant get this to workare there instructions for manually bring across relevant data eg itunes music and apps, photos, picasa data etc?

Why not turn off the Windows firewall and uninstall any other firewall software you have installed?
If you are using a Norton product uninstall it and discard it. To fully unistall most Norton products you have to go to the Norton website and download a soecial program to completely get rid of it. The normal uninstall feature built into the program will not remove all of it.
