Transfering files/jhow to uninstall unwanted software and files

I purchased the new Leopard OS 10.5.4 iMac. I wanted to transfer the files I had been previously using from my old mac mini and followed the instructions (my first mistake!) in Help and Migration Assistant. Bizarrely, it downloaded some of my old files but not all of them, crucially, not the ones I needed. It also downloaded many old applications that I do not need but are now using up memory.
How can I transfer the files that I need using Migraine Assistant (or is it hopeless and better to just email them to myself?);
How can I uninstall/delete/remove unwanted software/files now in the harddrive? Do I need to reinstall the entire system software from beginning?

I followed the instructions to reinstall according to the Help function in the new iMac, 10.5.4. However, after inserting the disc there is no such instructions, as far as I could see. There are really no options that they mention other to install or not to install. So, why does the Help manual say this if it is not true? I followed the instructions and reinstalled but it did not rid my unwanted files etc.

To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select “Archive and Install,” and then select “Preserve Users and Network Settings.” If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select “Erase and Install.” You can’t recover erased data.
Click Continue.
Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you’d like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

On PCs, there are system restore options or launchable uninstall files. Can't find out how to get rid of a d-link driver. (Did not work at all for me)
Had trouble connecting to the nternet over ethernet before the d-link driver installation, too. Worked for a bit, restarted, then didn't want to work (now an another computer). This ibook has had other internet connection problems associated with it (previous user complaints).

The iBook does have a FireWire port.
To uninstall an unwanted d-link driver, drag it to the trash and empty the trash.
You may want to download the iBook (Dual USB) Multilingual User's Guide (Manual) to help you figure things out. (Clicking on the link downloads the PDF.)
Mac 101 and Switch 101 may provide some helpful tips, too. Although written for the current OS (OS X 10.4), many of the concepts are the same.

All of the files are going into the same zip file but I want them visually in the space that I put them and not at the bottom of the snap to grid folder location they are looking like. I am trying to drag and drop files in groups so that I can group them for now, but image files always do their own "sort by" when I drag them from my web pages. Links don't do it though. I tried resetting the folder, and deleting the DS files. No luck.

Finder > Applications
Drag the Application to the Trash.
Empty The Trash
Dragging the Application Icon from anywhere else will not work.
The Icons of Applications in the (Finder > Applications) are actually the Application files.
If you right click an Applation in (Finder > Applications) and click 'Show Package Contents', all the files associated with the Application should be stored there.
So dragging the Application Icon in (Finder > Applications) to the Trash will uninstall it.

Problem in restore software and files from time machine to new hard disc

hello, recently im just change my macbook's hard disc, and i can't open any of my software and also the finder is keep no responding after i restore my files and software from time machine. Got any solution about it?

I see. Don't do that. I do not believe using Migration Assistant is a valid method of accomplishing what you intend.
Furthermore, unless you are using the "Enter Time Machine" feature, you really shouldn't pick and choose what you want to copy from a Time Machine backup... "no user serviceable parts inside". You can certainly find and individual files and folders in the Finder, but you will run into the permissions problems you describle. I would not attempt to circumvent those protections.
As I understand Time Machine, you must either restore a volume from a Time Machine backup, thereby erasing the volume first, or restore individual files and folders by using "Enter Time Machine" when the backup has already been properly designated for the source.
Since your replacement hard disk - the source, now - is technically new, the latter is not an option. It's as if you were trying to restore to a different computer. This can't be done.

Can't install or uninstall Desktop software and Roxio Media Manager has taken over

I had been having trouble with the Blackberry Desktop software crashing each time I closed it when I was done using it. This morning when I booted my computer I got an error message that said RoxWatchTray9 was unable to locate component. When I tried to close that box it attempted to install something but it just stalls. When I close try to cancel it just freezes. After while it tries to install again only to freeze again.
I figured the best solution would be to uninstall and reinstall the program but when I went into Add/Remove I discovered six listings for Blackberry Device Software for Blackberry 9530 smartphone, one for v5.0 and five for v4.7.0. I finally managed to uninstall the v5.0 at the top of the list but I can't remove the other five. I also can't reinstall the program. Roxio Media Manager continues attempting to force an install and is hogging my system resources. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try this process (you might have to do step 2 multiple times for each instance of what is showing in add/remove programs):
I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista/WIN7, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything.
1) Remove your device OS update package from your PC (add/remove programs)
2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM DTM software:

3) Get a fresh download of the RIM DTM software:

Choose the version that is newest and (if applicable) compatible with your PIM (if you are synchornizing via USB):

4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your device OS package from your carrier:

5) Install DTM to your PC
6) Install (also to your PC), the device OS package

Hopefully that will get things going again. You might also want to avoid Media Manager unless you really really need it.

Remotely uninstall unwanted software

I'm currently working on a way to uninstall non-IT approved software from any computer with the SCCM Client installed. I thought this was simple at first... but am finding a few issues, using a few different methods.
Main problem is that using either Powershell, WMIC or the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
It doesn't show every program listed in the "Programs and Features"
For example: I installed Vuze on my computer to test the Uninstall.
Powershell script: Get-WmiObject -class Win32_Product | Where-object { $_.name -match "vuze"} - Doesn't show it
WMIC scipt: wmic product get name - Doesn't list it, and just typing in wmic product where name="vuze" call uninstall says "No Instance(s) Available.
and am unable to find it in the proper registry key.
Now, I know what you're thinking, "Why don't you push the software with the msiexec /x {Package | ProductCode}?"
It would mean I would have to download each and every single program I want to be uninstalled, and keep them in my distribution point (and working at a school, that means a lot of programs to download, and a lot of "junk" software as well)
I'm sure this has been done somewhere else before, and I'm going at it the wrong way. Any help would be appreciated

Windows installer caches a local copy of each MSI on the client machine C:\windows\installer
You do not need to download the application again to remove it from a device.
There are MSI's that don't add themselves to Programs and features.
You might be better limiting who can install software, this will not prevent them from using applications that run from source, I am sure you have come across counter strike portable edition :)
Then there are applications that install to the profile which don't require admin rights.
You will be better spending your time removing admin rights to everyone that doesn't need it then chase up the odd issue afterwards.
Thanks for the reply. There's nothing I want to do more than to remove admin rights from all our users, but company policy dictates that they all need it... which makes my job very difficult.

2nd user login - limited software and files required

Hi, I need to create a second user login, preferably with access only to Word and Excel, and one folder of files. Is this possible or is all software accessible in a second login? Trying to avoid email, internet, skype, and get on with some intense and laborious work that has to be finished without further procrastination and distraction! I can no longer see the line between time spent working and time spent doing all the other things that have to be done. The problem with being self-employed. Thanks.

I am having trouble opening files with a psa extension. These files come from space planning software and I was told that Photoshop elements would be able to open files with a pas extension. Does anyone have any advise?

Does anyone know why I am unable to open psa files with elements 13. I read on the internet that elements was the software that I needed. However, it does not work. The files are coming from space planning software.

In older versions of Elements PSA files were associated with Photoshop Album which has now been replaced by the Organizer. Elements has no 3d functionality for supporting space planning files but these files can normally be exported or saved by the originator as a bitmap or pdf file. Those could then be opened in PSE. I suggest you explore the possibilities of file conversion with your original source.

I can't get my iPhone5 to showup in itunes. I've uninstalled the software and the re-installed and it still doesn't show.

[SOLVED] A File Manager That Can Group Folders and Files like Fences

I want to create a custom desktop environment in Arch Linux and I'm looking for a file manager that is similar to Windows Explorer in terms of features and functionality and can group files and folders into fences like Stardock Fences does for the desktop in Windows.
If such a feature isn't available then I, at least, want to group both files and folders into individual groups based on custom parameters and not just Date or Size.
Is there any File Manager in Linux that can fulfill my requirements? If not, is there any file manager which can be extended (by scripting or programming) easily to include the features that I'm looking for?

Huh. I'm down to Konquerer, like you suggested, and Dolphin. Can I use either as a stand alone file manager in a custom DE in Arch without using KDE?
