Transfering from iPod into a new library?

It's like this: I recently got a new notebook and consequently deactivated the old one. Now I've got an empty library on the new one, which is activated for my iPod. My question: how the **** do I transfer the music on my iPod into my library? There's got to be a way, right? Copy-paste doesn't work.
It would be great if someone could help! Also, I need very simple answers, I'm not expactly an expert with computers!

Unloading music from iPod into a blank library?

I just made a new library for myself and I want the music that's in my iPod onto that library. The easy solution appears to be syncing the two, but in the warning box is says that the music from the library will replace the music from my iPod, so it will probably clear my iPod completely. Now i'm clueless.

If you want to continue using the iPod with multiple libraries you'll have to keep it in manual mode, you can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. Otherwise when you've loaded the new library you can return the iPod to syncing automatically: Using iPod with Multiple computers or libraries
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. Downloaded latest version of iTunes to the new computer, then successfully transferred library content from the old computer to the new one via the external hard drive method. All material -- iTunes purchases, music ripped from CDs, a movie, even MP3 files purchased long ago from another source -- transferred successfully; everything plays on the new computer just fine.
My problem is that the "old" playlists didn't transfer over. After connecting my iPod Touch to the new computer, I verified that the iPod has the latest version of iOS, and its content (including the old/original playlists) displays in the window on the left-hand side of the iTunes screen. The really frustrating thing is that I can find no way to transfer the old playlists to my new iTunes library. I've tried dragging and dropping, selecting and pasting, and exploration of all the options menus, but no luck. Creating a new playlist in the new library and then clicking on the "Add To" button opens up a window into which to drop dragged songs/folders from the new library listing, but simultaneously closes the left-hand display window with all of my iPod's current playlists depicted.
I appear successfully to have backed up my iPod to the new computer, but all the sync menu options are grayed out. When I tried clicking on the Sync button, I got a warning that syncing to the new library would erase everything from the old library -- presumably obliterating my playlists with it. I have about a dozen different playlists, some of them with several hundred songs, drawn from a library of a few thousand individual items. Is there some means of importing/transferring the old playlists to the new computer/library, so that I don't manually have to drag and drop hundreds and hundreds of songs into a new set of playlists? Am I overlooking something really obvious or simple? Can I safely turn on Home Sharing and then import or paste the old playlists into the new computer's library. I don't think I'm too much of a Luddite, but given the size of my library I'm very leery of turning on Home Sharing (to the old Pentium computer) after I've successfully transferred over many GBs of content from the old machine to the new.

1). If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. 2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. 4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow? In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?

Loading ipod stuff into a new library??

Is it possible to load stuff on my ipod nano into a new library? I cannot access my library that is in sync with what is currently on my ipod because my computer that the library is on is not working. I have a new computer that Ive hooked my ipod nano into and it is telling me I will have to erase everything on the ipod to sync it with the new library on my new computer. Is it possible to take what is currently on my nano and transfer it to the new library on my new computer and then reload them back to the nano? The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases. File>Transfer Purchases
Everything on your ipod should also be on your computer and included in your regular backup of your computer.

iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPad, or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
With your iPod connected, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPod.
If you had Sync Music selected under the Music tab for your iPod sync preferences with iTunes, after downloading a song from the iTunes store direct with your iPod, the song would be copied to your iTunes library automatically the first time you sync your iPod with iTunes after doing so.
Manually managing music and videos is manual all the way.

I have authorisized the new computer, but still get the message that items i purchased could not be transferred from ipod because computer is not authorized.

Have you tried re-authorizing your computer?
Select the "Store" menu in iTunes (it's with the other tabs on the top of the iTunes window), and click on "Deauthorize computer" to deauthorize this computer.
Once you've deauthorized, go to the Store menu again, and now select "Authorize computer" to authorize this computer again.
After doing that, try syncing purchases to your iPod - do you still get the "now authorized" message?

In general do not regard your i-device as a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining a backup of your media on a computer backup.

How it was originally designed by Apple is you store your music in iTunes on a Mac or a PC. you back up your computer. you add to your library through the computer. you then sync to ipod classic. it was never intended to move music back the other way unless you purchased the music from iTunes store.
If your compuetr breaks you restore iTunes library from computer backup.
in many cases music is reduced in size and quality to 128kbps on sync so backwards sync would lose library quality.
finally, it avoids people illegally sharing music, or stealing music from lost or stolen ipods.
to backwards sync you will need to either get into the risky business of third party software, or find a PC running Linux and Rhythmbox and ask again. I probably said too much.
