Transfering from my powerbook to my macbook

hello..
i was wondering...can i only use a firewire cable to transfer files onto my new mac? or can i use a usb cable as well??

The fastest way to transfer files is using a firewire cable through what's termed as FireWire Target Disk Mode. You cannot use a USB cable.
If you do not have a firewire cable then you can network both computers with an ethernet cable, switch on File Sharing and transfer files that way. Depending on the quantity and size of files, this may take some time though.

  • Transferring from old PowerBook to new MacBook Pro

I have ordered a new Macbook Pro and was looking for guidance on bringing it up to date with my old PowerBook with Tiger as easy as possible.
I was wondering if I could just move my total Users Folder from the PB to the new computer?
Are there items in this Tiger Users folder that would not work in the new Leopard Intel computer and should not be moved?

  • Importing iTunes library from old powerbook to new macbook pro

What is the best way to import my old itunes library (from my 10.4.7 powerbook) to my new macbook pro?
    Thanks!

I'm still having some trouble, can someone give me guidance? Here is what I did:
    1. Connected old mac (PowerBook G4) to new mac (MacBook Pro) via firewire 800 and target mode.
    2. Located "iTunes Music" folder on old Mac and pulled the entire folder into "iTunes Music" on the new Mac.
    3. I restarted.
    4. iTunes didn't find the new music, it does find the one song I've purchased using the new Mac. I think this makes sense, because now the folder structure has an embedded "iTunes Music" folder (from the old Mac) in my new mac's "iTunes Music" folder. The structure looks like:
    -iTunes Music
----[folder for the one song I've purchased on the new mac]
----iTunes Music (this is the folder from the old mac)
---------[folders of music from the old mac]
    5. So I went into the iTunes Music folder I just imported, selected all the music, and copied it one level up.
    6. The result is on my new mac, my "iTunes Music" folder now contains all the music from the old mac, plus the one song I've puchased using the new mac.
    7. I restarted my new mac. Restarted iTunes, but still the only song that's recognized is the one I've already purchased. The others aren't showing.
    8. I've gone into preferences/advanced and confirmed I'm pointing at the right target folder.
Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here?

  • Hi, How do i transfer information from my powerbook g4 to macbook

Hi, I have a powerbook g4 and want to transfer info to my new macbook pro. Ive already set up the macbook and now what is the next step for migration?

    Hi ..
How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Be aware, your PBookG4 is a PowerPC where the new Mac is Intel. You may have PowerPC apps installed on the PBook that won't run on LIon v10.7 on the new Mac.

  • I followed the instructions to copy and paste ALL profile files from old PowerBook to new MacBook Pro, so why are no bookmarks now shown in Firefox?

    From the page
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile#w_copying-files-between-profile-folders
After dragging and dropping the profile folder from the old PowerBook to the new MacBook Pro, I followed the copy/paste instructions, apparently successfully, to replace all the files in the latter with all the files in the former -- essentially to transfer my Firefox browser functionality from the old computer to the new. However, on starting Firefox, I have ZERO bookmarks (in other words, Firefox looks like it did when I downloaded and installed it a couple days ago). One note: When I performed the operation, I had used the new version of Firefox almost not at all, yet in the course of copying and pasting I had to permit replacement of HUNDREDS of bookmark files with identical names. How could THIS be?!?

It is normally best to only restore personal data that you really need (bookmarks, passwords, etc.) and not a full profile folder.
The xxxx in the name of the JSON backup (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx_$$$$.jsonlz4) denotes the number of bookmarks in the file and a file hash ($$$$) is appended to check if it is necessary to save a new backup, so only if there is a different hash because bookmarks were modified then a new backup is created.
If you remove the newer backups that were created before you restored the backup and only leave the bookmark backups from the saved profile then Firefox should rebuild the bookmarks when you remove all the places files.

  • Import photos from old powerbook to new macbook pro with time machine

Today I received a new macbook pro from Apple because my powerbook g4 was beyond repair. I would like to import my iPhoto library from my time machine backup to the new computer. I have opened up iPhoto and then time machine but it is only showing me today, not what's been backed up on the harddrive. Can anyone tell me what to do to focus it to what was backed up, not just today?
Thank you so much for your help.

In System Preferences, Sharing, is the Computer Name of the new MacBook the same as the old PB? If not, right-click the Time Machine icon in the dock and choose +Browse Other Time Machine disks+. It should be obvious where to go from there.

  • Migrating project from FCP/Powerbook to FCE/MacBook ?

    Hi,
If anyone can help me, I will be very thankful. I am trying to finish a movie that is a gift.
Has anyone had trouble exporting QT movies from projects that originated on a Powerbook (in Final Cut Pro) and are now on a MacBook (in Final Cut Express)? When I try to export a QuickTime movie of my sequence now, it creates a useless 7 second blank, white movie file.
This doesn't happen if I use different footage that came with a tutorial, so I suspect the trouble is a format migration issue: I started this movie project in Final Cut Pro, on a Powerbook a couple years ago. Now the project opens and edits fine in FC Express on my new MacBook, but I cannot get it to export a real QuickTime movie.
Again, thanks for any tips on how to make this work.

Try trashing your preferences to start. What's the media you're using? Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie?

  • Transfering from G3 imac to my macbook

hi, i need to transfer data ie:photo's, movies, etc to my macbook, i have no disc burner on my imac. i have read somewhere you need a firewire cable????
can i also move applications like indesign, photoshop etc.
    any help appreciated

You do need a Firewire cable (6pin to 6pin) and you can use Apple's Firewire Target Disk Mode to transfer all your personal data from the old iMac (which I assume has Firewire?) to your new MacBook as well as the applications.
Actually to transfer your applications over go to Applications->Utilities and use Migration Assistant from your MacBook. You really don't want to just drag applications over unless you know you're getting the whole thing which you might not be doing.

  • Transferring from Mac mini (Bootcamp) to Macbook Pro

I purchased a Mac mini earlier this year, and while it is an amazing machine, I think a Macbook is something I will need at the moment as I am traveling a bit.  Now my issue is that I run windows via Bootcamp on my Mac mini and would still like to do so on a Macbook.  How difficult is it to transfer from one to the other?  I imagine that the Mountain Lion OS makes it easy to do so, but I want to make sure.  I also don't want to lose the $200 that I spent on the Windows 7 key.
(I would like to mention that I am not worried about losing any data on Mountain Lion OS as everything is on some sort of cloud, same is to say for the Windows side.)

See if this can help: http://twocanoes.com/winclone/
(Note: Only for NTFS, if your BooCamp partition is FAT32, this will not work)
Boot Camp to Image to Boot Camp
The most common imaging scenario is to create a Winclone image of Boot Camp as part of a backup strategy or to use as a source for Boot Camp migration.  This scenario is a two-step operation.
First, select the Boot Camp partition in the Sources column, then select Save Image in the Destination window, then click the Save Image... button.
After creating the image, it may be restored to Boot Camp, shared on the network to restore to other Mac hosts, copied as a file to another Mac to migrate Boot Camp or deployed to multiple remote Mac systems using mass deployment applications.

  • Transferring from old ibook to new macbook pro

i have linked my computers with firewire and have been able to transfer itunes, address book, mail, etc. but no luck in getting my 'birthdays' or files from ical. although the laptops are linked, i cannot see anything on the ibook as the screen is broken. any ideas in transferring this important information? thanks to anyone reading and to those who can help.

Look for the folder /Users/username/Library/Calendars/ on the iBook's hard disk, and copy over everything in this folder to the Calendars folder in your account's home folder that doesn't currently exist in the destination. Replace username with the short name of that account, or the full path to the home folder if that has been changed.

  • How do I move an address book from a pc to my MacBook Pro

How do I move an address book from a pc to my new MacBook Pro

    Hey andreafiona,
You can either manually migrate or use Windows Migration Assistant. I'd like to direct you to two articles - the first one here will go over generally what Windows Migration Assistant is about. For you, I'd skip to the section titled "What gets transferred, and to where?" and then "Email, contacts, and calendar information" so you can read about where you contacts will get moved if you choose the WMA option:
    About Windows Migration Assistant
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796
Then, this next article will be a step by step process for transferring from your PC to the MacBook Pro and will include using both Windows Migration Assistant and manually migrating, whichever you choose:
Switch Basics: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac

  • Transfer Pages from Powerbook G4 to MacBook Pro

Didn't really know where to find this answer, so I thought I would ask the knowledgeable Pages community. This is my situation...
I have just purchased the new 17" MacBook Pro (and YES!!! it is the bomb!), anyway, during the registration process of the new laptop I transferred all of my files and applications via Apple's built in "transfer" step.... I did not install any of the applications via CD's. Since I have transferred from a G4 to an Intel processor, will my applications be running natively on the Intel chip (those that can run natively)? Or will I have to reinstall Pages, etc. from the installation CD to get the "universal" code? Naturally, I would like my software to run natively as I assume it will be quicker and less prone to "bugs".
I thank all of you in advance for your knowledge on this subject.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You should probably create a new subject here, as it is a slightly different question. This thread is "solved" so people may have a tendency not to check it.
Anyhow, if you have a license for 05 you need to get the files for '05. Can you still download that somewhere, or did you download the testdrive for '06 by mistake?
As far as I remember other people have had similar problems when they knew for certain that they had both '05 and '06 installed. You may find the answer if you search the forum, and if you post a new topic, the same people who helped before may see it and help again. I haven't had that problem myself.
For photos published on Home Page, are they still visible on the net? If so you can ctrl+click on them and download them to your harddrive.
How did you publish the photos? If you used iWeb you may want to ask in the iWeb form at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=188 . If not the .Mac HomePage forum at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=975 may be able to help you.

  • I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?

I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro (which belonged to them) to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?  And is there any danger, in doing so, that I might delete any of her ICloud information ?

Sign out in System Preferences>iCloud. This will remove any synced data such as Calendars, emails and Contacts from your Mac, but will have no effect on the data on the server - so that other devices logged into it will continue to see the data.

  • Going from a Powerbook to a new Macbook

I have just purchased a new Macbook and want to transfer everything from my older (3 year old) Powerbook G4 to it. Can I use a Firewire to Firewire connection to do an "all at once" transfer? One IT person says yes, another is more conservative and says I should just copy data files, user files, documents, etc. Any advice would be welcome.

Use a FireWire cable to connect the two computers and start your PowerBook up while holding the 'T' key. This will mount the PowerBook's hard drive on your MacBook. Now you could use the Migration Assistant at this point to transfer your data and applications. Some will tell you they've used it to transfer stuff from a PPC computer to an Intel computer without trouble. And they have. Others will tell you there are pitfalls and you shouldn't. Their experiences are also true. I know, I've had it happen both ways and since I'm not confident I know exactly what has to be done to guarantee a good transfer I won't recommend it.
While connected in FireWire Target Disk mode, transfer your data from the PowerBook to MacBook. If you have AppleWorks and intend to continue using it, copy it to the MacBook. Then gather up your installation disks and reinstall everything. That I know is safe.
