Transfering from Windows to Leopard.......

I have used Windows for years and I now feel that the tide has turned, in Apples favour !.
How easy is the transition from one to another re files, your email contacts/folders, photos etc etc?.
Thanks

Some of the following should help. You might want to consider one of the Missing Manuals from Oreilly Press. http://www.oreilly.com/ I got the Tiger book when I first switched and it was a lifesaver. I didn't know about the forums then which is also a great source for info. The Leopard missing Manual is very good.

That's probably a better question to present to Adobe than to other users.

  • Is there a migration assistent from windows to Leopard?

My new MacBook Pro runs de Snow Leopard... I would like to transfer my files from my PC, but can't find a migration assistent from windows to Snow Leopard... just from windows to Lion...

There is no migration assistant for Windows to Snow Leopard. But you can transfer your files to an external drive that has been formatted FAT32 as the Mac can read and write to a FAT32 formatted drive.

  • From Windows user: Leopard

    Hi all.
I'm a typical Windows user, never had any Macs in my life. And my English is not perfect, sorry
Being impressed by new iMac and all that hype around Leopard and having constant pressure from my kids and wife, I bought a brand new iMac 20", wireless mouse/keyboard and AirPort station. Brought it all home, installed included Leopard and was very excited.
Now, three days later I'm sitting here, quite confused.
What I want from my Mac is simple: a hub/controller for all our photos, music, videos, movies, etc. And a safe computer for my wife to read mail and go online and my kids to get crazy with games and stuff.
The way I was going to set it up was this:
    1. Replace my existing router with AirPort.
    2. Set a certain space on one of my network drives for iTunes library, photos, etc. I was going to use RAIDed drive, so back up wasn't really needed, but I was thinking that Time Machine will cover all my future needs (if any) in terms of having all important things backed up safely.
    3. Load all my media on that drive and share it with all machines in the house, Windows or Macs (this isn't going to be the only Mac in the family).
I bet you know already where I'm going with this. But first, Leopard bugs:
    1. Dashboard quit working for admin users (me and my wife) on the first day. But it works just fine for my kids. Still can't fix it. My wife is especially frustrated about this because she was going to use some of those items quite a lot.
    2. Eject button on keyboard and all eject buttons in Finder simply don't work. Period. The only way to eject a drive or image is to drag it to the Trash.
    3. AirPort setup was a pure nightmare. I plugged it in, connected it to the modem and the yellow light started to blink. I waited for 10-20 minutes, just in case, because manual says it should be steady green right from the start. Then fired its Utility on Mac, it didn't see AirPort at all. I installed Utility on one of Windows machines with the same result. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite comfortable with networking and everything was set up correctly. The only way I was able to "see" this thing is by wiring a Win machine to it and using Windows networking tool.
    4. After I finally managed it to work and all my machines were connected I plugged one of my USB drives into AirPort (just because I was curious). AirPort Utility couldn't see it, I mean it couldn't see the drive at all. I don't really need this but still can't fix it.
    5. And, of course , the whole notion of "image mounting" drives me completely NUTS. I understand that this is a different world with its own rules and stuff, but still... If I have a bunch of files on one drive and I want to copy them to some other drive and I don't want to do this manually, why CCC and SuperDuper ask me to "mount" some kind of a "disk image" (which, as I understood, could be "sparse"/good or "not sparse"/bad) and write those files to it? What happened with plain and simple "copy these freaking files to this freaking location"? :)))
    6. It turned out that Time Machine can work only with external drives. This is really strange. I know VERY FEW people who have only one computer. For those guys, having a separate FireWire or USB drive for each machine is a waste. The ONLY logical thing to do in this case is to have one drive/server on your network for all backups from all machines. Of course, this drive should be reliable (RAID or physical mirror). Also, having file versioning in Time Machine doesn't feel right. Modern drives are 200-300 Gigs. So, theoretically, if you have 200 gigs of files and all of them has been changed, you'd need at least 1 terabyte drive to store only 5 days' history. Not realistically, of course, but... They should explain it better, I think.
    7. I noticed bunch of other smaller things in Leopard that bother me but, in general, we like our Mac and I think that Apple will fix most of bugs in the next update or so.
    Now, a suggestion to Apple:
My family got 20 gigs of music, 4 gigs of photos and "unsizeable" amount of movies. If you really want our business then give us a possibility to load all of this on a NAS drive, share it with all machines on local subnet with parental control and control it from any machine that has been set as "admin" machine. Or something alone these lines. I'm really sick and tired of going to my Mac just to wake it up in order to continue listening iTunes on my Win machine while I'm working. And I can't set it to "never sleep".

Is this thing a full blown, non-scaled down Mac? Is the actual computer capable of everything that a regular, say, Macbook could do? Are there any disadvantages to it that hold it back from all the features?
Yes, on the inside it's a full computer, just in a smaller package. The hardware is quite similar to what was in the MacBook in its previous generation.
It's not deliberately "crippled" in any way.
Also, at the $600 STANDARD tech spec settings, can I run OS X smoothly and use all basic apps with maybe some light movie editing (iMovie/Final Cut)? Will it be really slow or what?
Sure can, and no, it won't be really slow. Encoding movies might take a few minutes longer. If anything slows you down doing basic tasks, it will be that the basic Mini comes with 1GB of RAM - you might feel that if you run multiple heavier applications at the same time.
What version of OS X does the Mac mini come with? Leopard?
Newly shipping ones will come with Leopard. Stores with old stock may sell you one that comes with Tiger or a Leopard upgrade disc.
Hows the transition from a long time Windows user to OS X?
Mostly smooth, and where there are differences, it's often surprising how much the OS X way "makes sense". Installing things takes a bit of getting used to, but once you work it out it'll become natural.

  • VNC from Windows 7 -- Leopard

    Hi,
Im using Ultra VNC from my WIndows 7 laptop to connect to my mac mini (leopard)connected to my Sony 40 LCD (single monitor setup). This is not working at the moment, my mouse gets connected but on the screen it says "Pleaed wait - initial screen loading".
I have also tried Real Vnc and it's the same.
Im running Vine server on the mac
On my old XP laptop this was never a problem. It got connected direct.
    Any ideas //Anders

Maybe you should post this on a Windoze forum. As you said, it was working with XP.

  • Editor will not open after Elements 11 is transferred from Mac Snow Leopard to OS 10.10.2 Yosemite

I have been running Photoshop Elements 11 on a Mac with OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I've just got a new Mac with the latest OS X (OS 10.10.2, Yosemite). I transferred all my files to the new computer with Migration Assistant.
The PSE 11 seemed to install fine and the Organiser opens OK, except that I get a message saying 'Some online services are unavailable' and asking if I want to go on without them. However when I try to open the Editor it won't open, instead I get two error messages, first 'Some of the application components are missing from the Application directory, please reinstall the application', and then 'A required application library failed to open and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application'.
My questions are – should I just do a reinstall from the original disk? If so, should I do a complete uninstall of Elements 11 first? If I do a reinstall, will I lose any edits, version sets or anything else?
I had been told that I should be able to simply transfer over the PSE 11, with the original product key no. Are there any incompatibilities between PSE 11 and the latest version of Yosemite?
    Thanks for any orientation,
    Nick

You can never, never, never transfer any installed version of PSE on any platform. You must always install from scratch on a new machine. By trying to do so you have made more work for yourself. You will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
which will not seem to do anything, but is a necessary step to break the links within the program. Then you can go around and manually remove everything related to PSE that you can find, not only from Applications, but also from your username>library>preferences and the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe. You must go to these locations manually; spotlight will not help you with this type of search.
Then you can reinstall from your original media or from the download here:
    Download Photoshop Elements products | 13, 12, 11, 10

  • Transferring from Tiger to Leopard across 2 macs: need same username?

Hi, I just got a new (well second hand) Macbook running Leopard to replace my iBook G4 running Tiger.
The Macbook's main admin account is named, simply enough, "Admin" (short username and home directory 'admin' lowercase).
The iBook's main admin account is my first name.
Now, I read up on how to transfer files, and I decided I'm not going to use Migration Assistant, but transfer all data I need manually.
I have a wireless network and now it's being shared between the ibook and macbook. I already copied some files that way and it's easy and fast enough for me to do it like that, rather than through firewire or ethernet.
Also, I mainly need to transfer actual documents, and music, and movies, etc. - I don't mind creating new preferences and settings for applications on Leopard as I start using the macbook (also seen as they're running on different systems!), so I don't need to copy everything in the Library. I read that I can still manually transfer entire folders of application support data, like ical, addressbook, etc. Email is all on gmail so no problem there either.
But am I missing something? anything in the /Documents, /Music, or /Application Support folders that may create problems if transferred across two accounts with different names, and not just two different systems?
What about permissions? once I copy stuff to a new account, will that account fully 'own' the data that's copied?
In short - should I change the 'Admin' username on the macbook with leopard to match the old 'firstname' account on the ibook with tiger?
In that case, how should I do that - better to create a new admin account on the leopard macbook, or just change the name of the current one (I see it's possible on leopard now from System Prefs)?
One last thing - the macbook was reformatted completely just days before being sold to me, so right now I don't feel the need to erase the disk again and start from scratch. I don't know which erase option was used, but all the applications run fine and there's only basic preferences and no data in the home folders, so I can start using it straight away.
Is another complete reformatting still advised, so that I can set my own options? (like, I don't know, zero out all data the max amount of times?)
Cos if it's better to do that, then I wouldn't mind doing it now before I transfer all the files. (I have external HD for backup, so I could still do it later, but it'd be more of a pain).
I apologise if this seems like an obvious or redundant question, but I really am not sure what to do -- also because previously, whenever I upgraded from one mac to the other, I always used the same username, but the two macs were always running the same system, so I simply transfered the whole home folder from one machine to the other, something I guess I should NOT do now as it's different systems and different machines (PPC vs. Intel).
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    pepita,
I had no problems migrating an entire HOME folder from a PPC Mac to my Intel one(s). YMMV. What you want to avoid are any plugins, etc., that might contain PPC code. Since these tend not to be stored in one's HOME folder, you should be OK.
Even if you migrate folders piece-meal, it is far better to maintain the same short name. For this purpose, it would probably be best to simply create the account, making it an admin account, then delete the old one. One thing you want to be certain to do is get rid of any account with a name that may conflict with "system" accounts. In your case, this means that account with a name of "admin." That's a big no-no. Another one to avoid is "guest," especially in Leopard (which already has a working guest account that can be turned off and on).
Some applications maintain links to libraries based on their full path, which would include a user's short name. This is the main reason for keeping the same short name. If files/folders are copied from somewhere to a new account (while logged into that new account), ownership will automatically be correct.

  • Cant open over network from Windows to Leopard, but ok to Tiger

    Hi
We have a number of Mac Pro's some running Tiger and others running Leopard. I can open any quicktime file over our network from a PC to any Tiger Mac, but not to a Leopard Mac. Why not? I can see the files I can open any other file type, just not QT. Copy the same file over to one of the Tiger Mac's and I can open it from the Windows PC. This would not be such an issue, but we are dealing with 1920x1080 uncompressed files and it is a real pain to move them.
Get Error 43: a file could not be found
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Tony

Well outside help other than this list has solved this. Seems there is a bug in QT windows that if a QT file resides in a folder on the MAc with a name longer than 8 characters, it wont open over the network.
ie. Running QT Windows 7.5 connecting over network to a Mac running leopard.

  • I recently transferred from a snow leopard to a lion, please help????

I recently transferred everything from my snowleopard to a lion. Everything transferred fine. I gave my snowleopard to another teacher to use and now both computers have my name. I have changed the user name on the snowleopard, but it still sends information as my name. Example: we have to put in a number code on a printer to be able to print, both computers send info with my name. Is there a way to change one of the computers to not have my name on it. I know this is confusing, but please help!!!!

The person you gave the old Mac to should create a new user account, via System Preferences > Accounts (make it an Admin account) and delete the old one.
Also change the Computer name, via System Preferences > Sharing.

So the palm is broke and you want to know if the contacts are on the local computer "Windows" machine?
There should be a way in the software to find out if your contacts are on the Windows machine, does it have an export feature for your contacts? If so try exporting to a comma delimited file and verify that all contacts are there.

  • Transferring from windows messed up libary to brand new mac

    Hey,
I just ordered my macbook pro, and it should arrive in the next two weeks or so. I have previously been a windows user, and am very faithful that the conversion will be for the best. I'm going into college, and thus I have alot of music for someone who has never downloaded before (around 30 gigs). I have had to switch from two computers while using windows. I orginally had a family desktop where I was able to collect 15gb of music. I then got handed my brother's older desktop which already had 10 gig of his music which I decided to keep. Now, when I look on my music on his computer, the music is split up into three categories, the family desktop music, my brothers music, and itunes library. itunes (do you capitalize the i in itunes at the beginning of a sentence? lol) reads from one of those three folders depending on what song I'm listening to. So basically, my longwinded question is what is the best way to move all this music to the new mac so that is all in one, easy to navigate, folder.
    Thanks

    emmo,
There is really no harm having it in 3 different folders, as long as they are all added to the same iTunes library.
But if you wish to get them all together, here is a suggestion:
-copy the individual folders to the new Mac
-add all of them to your new iTunes library
-do a Consolidate Library, which will copy everything into the single iTunes music folder, organized by artist/album.
I blv this achieves what you want. Then you can delete the individual folders.

  • Transferring from windows media

Is it even possible. I have tons of songs on my computer through windows media, would I be able to upload them on my iPod?

Sure. But you will not be able to use Windows Media Player to do it. Import the songs into iTunes, and iTunes will ask you if you would like to convert them, say yes, and it will format the music so your iPod will be able to play it.

  • Boot Camp And Viewing\Editing Files From Windows

I just ordered Leopard and I'm going to putting it on my 20 Imac next weekend. My plans are to install Windows Vista home premium through boot camp. Is there a way to access files from Windows on Leopard and vice-versa? I have MS Office for Mac and Windows and I do photo editing and it would be nice to access and edit files as needed whatever OS I'm without having to reboot. Some kind of third party software available for this? Parallels is OUT OF THE QUESTION for me. I tried it a few months ago and it was nothing but a nightmare. Left me with a really bad taste for it.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Kappy,
I did a quick look at MacDrive and looks like what I was wanting. Will download the trial after my transition. Another question: When I install and setup Boot Camp will there be an option to format the partition in NTFS or does it do it by default?
Thanks again for the tip on MacDrive. I've only had this Mac for about 6 months and just learning what is probably old news to you.

  • File transfers from iMac to Windows Share on another computer. Very slow!

Hopefully someone has some ideas on how best to troubleshoot this.
I have an iMac and a Windows 2003 File Server.
The iMac sits on a gigabit switch with another computer, an XP machine and the 2003 File Server sits on another gigabit switch.
The problem I'm having is that transfers from the iMac to the 2003 File Server are very slow whereas from the XP machine on the same switch they are fast.
Any ideas on how to test this or how I might fix the problem?
The Network interface itself is set to:
    1000baseT
    full-duplex
    MTU: standard (1500)
I've tried it with both full-duplex and full-duplex (flow control).
The directory I'm transfering is a 7.56gb directory and it's taking over an hour to transfer.
    Thanks
    Josh

This doesn't quite work at all. I can understand for OSX to be serving the files the need too change /etc/smb.conf, however, my OSX machine doesn't serve any files, thus the smb service is offline. I have tried adding that tag to my fileserver using samba (its a linux nas box) and it still is slow as ****. I know it works with tiger because one of my sisters is using a macbook on tiger and is able to connect wirelesssly to it and download files as fast as my MBP downloads through ethernet (mine is leopard). My other sister has the exact same configuratino of macbook, however hers is leopard like mine and it moves crazy slow. I know this is the reason why apple pedaled back about network drive time machine because they realized the broke something so I'm giving them the beneffit of the dooubt. If 10.5.2 rolls around and I don't see improvement I think i'll just go back to tiger...

  • Transferring network user files from Windows Server 2003 to Mac OSX 10.5.8

I'm wondering if any network admins out there have a suggested method of transferring network user files from a Windows Server 2003 to an XServe running 10.5.8?
When we did the file transfer, clicking and dragging, there were a myriad permissions issues that subsequently arose. Surely there is a way to strip permissions off files PRIOR to the transfer?? Maybe not, but I'm wondering how you folks have done it.
We have had nothing but persistent permissions issues since the transfer (i.e. folks who should have access to files, being denied access, including the local server admin!!). This also translates to synch errors for network mobile accounts.
