Transfering i tunes & music to another hard drive

I would like to move all my music & iTunes to a new hard drive (external) and have all my new music load on that drive and not on the C drive.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
iTunes must be installed on the Windows drive. You cannot move the program away.
To move your music, check this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/5.0/en/567x.html

  • In itunes, can i save my music on another hard drive other than C?

i have the program installed on my computer, i would like the music to be saved on another hard drive other than C, is there a way to do that within itunes?

You can have multiple libraries, and switch between them using the shift-start-iTunes method. Normally a single library is all that is required. Each library connects to a single designated media folder, however you can import content from other locations if you choose. See Make a split library portable for reasons why this may not be the best approach. If you want to access the "same" library on more than one machine then you need to clone the library files as well as media.

  • Transfering I tunes Library to external hard drive?

    Hi,
The other day to free up space on my hard drive I transferred my Itunes Folder to an external hard drive. When I updated to 5.0 and went into preferences to point to the new location for the library I tunes does not recognize the library.
I have not synced up my ipod which has all my bought songs which of course are not backed up. So my question is can the library be on a external hard drive? And if not can I sync up my ipod so that the songs from the ipod will fill the new 5.0 and not lose my songs?
    Thanks
    Erik

  • How can i import my itune files on to another hard drive...

I need to reinstall MAC OS X onto my iMac. This is the computer which has all of my itunes files. How can I transfere the itune files onto another hard drive (via my network) and re transfere it on to my iMac once the OS reinstalled? I have bought many albums from iTunes store and would hate to loose them.
    Thanks for the Help

JLdM: Try moving the entire iTunes folder back, and if that doesn't work, reimport the music. The computer will need to be reauthorized.
jwhmd: Follow the instructions in this article.

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

  • Had to reinstall Lion.  Backed up music to external hard drive.  When I plug in iPod msg says it's synced w/another iTunes library.  Do i "erase and sync" and re-add music from the hard drive?

Had to reinstall Lion.  Backed up my music to an external hard drive.  When I plug in my iPod a prompt msg says it's synced w/another iTunes library and asks if I want to "erase and sync" (to what is now an empty library) or "Transfer purchases".  Do i "erase and sync" and re-add music from the hard drive once that's done?

You just need to tell iTunes where the library is located. If you want it back on your internal drive, copy the entite iTunes folder. Follow the instructions below.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
iTunes match won't automatically remove content from your computer, if you want to do that you will need to do it manually yourself.

  • Problems transfering music from external hard drive to ipod.

When I plug both ipod and external hard driver (WD 1600B014) into my Gateway laptop, only 1 device will work at a time with the other saying "usb device not recognised". This means I am unable to copy selected itunes songs onto my ipod.
This is driving me insane as I have 60gb of music on my hard drive which I want to chop and change frequently.
I have tried all manner of solutions including buying a powered usb hub (belkin) and starting a clean sheet with my laptop, installing all manner of new drivers for the usb ports.
I have the same problem with my 5G ipod 40gb.
I have tried the same problem on my dads desktop computer and the same problem arrises.
Does anyone have any answers as this has been driving me mad for ages and ages.
Is this a common thing or is it a problem with Western digital hard drives (although i thought they were a pretty big brand).
Any help would really be appreciated.

if I want to copy all those song files onto my iPod, they have to be copied into itunes first, and there's not nearly enough space on my desktop for that.
No, you don't have to copy the tracks to your internal hard drive. Just turn off the "copy music to iTunes Music Folder when adding" option in the iTunes Advanced preferences. Then use the "Add To Library" menu command and select the appropriate folder(s) on your external drive. iTunes will add the tracks to the Library but not move them to the internal drive.
Once that's done, use iTunes to transfer the music to the iPod. You can then, if iTunes is set for manual synchronization, remove the tracks from the Library if you want to remove the reference to the external drive.

  • Problems backing up I-tunes library to external hard drive.

Help - I'm having problems backing up I-tunes library to external hard drive. The drive appears on the desktop but when I try to drag in my i-tunes music folder I just get the circle with a line through it symbol. I can drag items from my mac to a different 4 gig memory stick with no problems. I put some music onto the hard drive from a windows p.c. and that dragged into my i-tunes fine. Any help would be much appreciated.

i'm guessing the external HD is NTFS formatted, which your Mac cannot write to (read only).
you will either have to reformat it (FAT32 or, better yet, for Mac) or install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver.

  • TS4498 Can i move my installation of Logic 10 to another hard drive, as its nearly full and i want to free up space so i can install the additional audio files too.

    Hi All,
....i've recently bought and downloaded Logic Pro X.........the software is great.......i love it. But when i bought it from apple, it gave me no choice where to install it. It just went ahead and installed it in the drive which has my operating system in it. Which, in itself is not a problem........but, in my case, the hard drive in question is almost full...........so when i decided to add the additional audio files which come with Logic...........a message was displayed that not enough free space is available for additional audio files.......please remove files to free up space!
I would love to free up space, but i only have a small 64gb SSD (which is where my operating system is installed). Normally, by moving files around (to another hard drive for example) would be the answer to this problem, but.........and here's the problem..........Logic, and my operating system cannot be moved to another hard drive, once installed it seems logic is there for good.
Come on Apple!!!!!!!!!!.................i have a terrabyte of space on my other hard drive!! ready and waiting for some music files and or Logic!!!!  .........why on earth could you not of given me the option of an installation disk choice!!!!!
.......well, it seems i'm stuffed now, and £130 lighter in the pocket. I could be the next Mody or Fat Boy Slim............but alas............it's not even looking like i'm gonna even be a one hit wonder.
........if anyone knows how to move logic to another destination drive, please help and when i'm famous, i'll sing at your wedding :-)

The vast majority of applications must be install on the system drive in order to run correctly.
Generally the applications take up very little disk space. It is usually the files they produce that need the space. Seeing as how I don't use Logic I can't do this but you might want to check how to move the files generated by Logic to another drive.

  • How do I generate a duplicate copy of my photos on another hard drive without loosing the keywords?

I want to back up my photos on another hard drive and access them from my main catalog? How do I do that? If I use Lightroom to move the folder onto another hard drive it does not give me the option to copy them. I have to actually move them, which defeats the purpose because I still have only one copy.
All of my images are in DNG format.

    Heppenheim wrote:

Backup copies should never be accessed by LR or any other editing application. They are "safety net" copies to be used only when the original image files become lost, damaged, or corrupted.
As dj_paige explained you also need to include regular backup copies of your LR catalog(s) on the backup hard drive. Any file & folder backup application will do this for you by keeping the files and folders on your backup drive up-to-date (i.e. synchronized) with the primary drive. If on a Mac you can use Time Machine if on a Windows system there are numerous applications available, both paid and freeware. I use FreeFileSync for backing up all my media files, including Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, Settings, and of course LR catalog.
If you're intention was to use the backup copies as separate editing copies, please take a look at Virtual Copies.
