Transfering IPOD information to Itunes

Hi,
I am hopeing someone can help... I have downloaded Itunes (this has no libary at this stage) however I have music, movies and pics on my ipod classic. How can I transfer all my information from my ipod classic to my itunes??
Thank you
Kiwirach

If your iPod is set to sync automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
If at any point you get a message that your iPod is linked to another library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Can i get my ipod information into itunes?

so everything was going great until one day i opened up itunes and my entire library was gone! so then i plugged in my ipod, which still had all my songs and playlists and whatnot on it, and it said that my ipod was connected to another ituned, but it isnt...so im thinking that maybe i need to find a way to get everything from my ipod itunes.
otherwise id really like to know where all my music went missing...

First, try Importing Your playlist (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93763)
Your Playlist should be in the My Music folder.
If that doesn't work, you can get all your iPod music into iTunes with this procedure:

  • My iPod information and iTunes information are different

I thought when I edited the information on the songs in itunes that it would automatically update the info on my iPod but that's not the case. I'm sure it's some kind of setting but I can't figure what or where it is. For example, i had to add some album art and correct the names of a couple of songs in iTunes but they were still wrong on my iPod. Can someone give me a pointer or two please? Thanks!

If you are manually updating then after making changes to anything in iTunes you will have to MANUALLY readd those songs with the new changes to the iPod. Since it is manual updating, any changes in iTunes will not be applies to your iPod tunes, even little updates like ID tags and whatnot.

  • Need help transferring iPod data to iTunes (computer virus wiped me out)

The AIM virus wiped my computer out last week and my help desk restored everything but my music. I've got all the tunes on my iPod but can't figure out how to transfer the music back into iTunes on my rebuilt laptop. Any way to do this? Your help is much much appreciated!

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Transferring iPod data to iTunes

I had to reinstall my operating system recently, and because of this, I lost all my iTunes data, but all the songs are fine. I know if I plug my iPod into an emtpy iTunes library, my iPod will then be emoty. How do I transfer data from my iPod to i Tunes?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. The transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7, for more on this function look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Okay, so what you want to do here, is connect your ipod, make sure you go into folder settings and show the hidden files and folders, and you can drag your ipod music folders (music files will have funky names like j3 etc...) over into either itunes, or your itunes music folders....
if you need further help, post back here
there's other ways, but that's the fastest and easiest

  • Transferring iPod library to iTunes/other iPod

Ok, so here's my problem. My hard drive crashed on my iBook and I had to get it replaced. I lost all my data and the majority of what was on the old hard drive was music.
Is there any way to transfer the music on my iPod back into my computer? Or, if I were to get.. say the iPod Touch, would that music on my current iPod transfer to it? Help please!!

You can't transfer directly from one iPod yo another but if you copy the songs back to iTunes you can update a new iPod from there. Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". • Transfering music from my iPod to my itunes on a new computer

a few days ago, the power surged and destroyed my computer, and I just got a new one. Today I installed iTunes to my new computer, and when I went to transfer the music from my iPod to my new computer, I discovered that I couldn't do this. I checked the support section of iTunes for help, and only found information on transfering music while the old computer is still accessable. Since my old computer is dead, I can't access it to follow any of the steps of the guide, or disconnect my iPod from the iTunes on my old computer. Does anyone know how I can sync my iPod with my new computer and sync the songs from my iPod onto my new computer (rather than erase all my songs which appears to be just about the only option my iTunes is offering right now)?

How about this, I have an iPod that is synced to my friends computer. I finally got my own computer and want to transfer everything to this computer so I can add new stuff, but I want to leave my library at my friends house so I have a backup. So my question is, if I add stuff to my library on my computer and I reconnect it to my friends computer, will I lose the stuff I added from my computer?
If you click "erase & sync" if prompted, yes.
And also, do I need to go to my frineds house with my computer to transfer the non-purchased stuff?

why wont my cd information in itunes sync with my ipod after I edit. I like for my albums to have one artist instead of the main artist and featured artist it just makes music eaiser to find. i'm new to the apple word coming from a mp3 this is so complicated.

In terms of updating the iPad, your games progress should be included in the backup. How long it takes to udpate will depend upon your content on the iPad (it will backup and restore it, though the contents of the iPod and Videos apps aren't included in a backup) and wifi speed - the iOS update file is something like 700 meg so may take a while to download.
To update, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
An iPad 1 will update to iOS 5.1.1, and an iPad 2 and 3 to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change.
