Transfering itunes from old emac to new imac

I recently upgraded to a new imac.  I transfered my files however it would not let me transfer my itunes, i believe because it was an older version.  I was able to transfer the music, however my playlist are gone, shopping cart, and purchased music etc.  I am not sure how to transfer the old into to the new computer.  I am also concerned about connecting my ipod to the new computer because I am afraid that it will delete the whole ipod.  Any suggestions?
thanks

WELL... I finished the whole transfer last night... It actually didn't take that long (definitely not as long as the iphoto transfer took)... since the new computer is so fast. You actually don't need to download the songs again... they are there... in your old itunes folder... you just need to drag them into the new itunes application...
I lost all my playlists, which is bad, but I can live with it. it will give me a chance to go over some songs again, BUT the only thing that could not be recovered is album artwork from the songs I had purchased in Emusic.... And that was a lot of songs with great album graphics.... Somehow, itunes knows how to retrieve the art for songs purchased from itunes only...
Anyway, I agree that there should have been a better way, much less painful to do this.... but your songs should still be there... And IF I'M NOT WRONG, after you imported them to the new itunes, they are stored again, and you can erase the old folder....

  • HT4527 When transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer, even though all of songs were copied over, not all of them went to iTunes, some appear to be stored elsewhere. How can I find these songs, and how do I transfer them to iTunes?

When transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer, all my songs were copied over, but not all of them were stored in iTunes. It appears they are on the computer somewhere, but not on iTunes. Where are these other songs likely to be, and how can I get them onto iTunes? Because of this problem, Apple will not allow me to update my iPhone.

You may/must have had music files stored outside of your iTunes library.
I'd recommend going to the Finder and then via the search box look for files with mp3 aif m4a aac etc. depending on the music format your digital music had. With the list of files shown you should be able to learn which files were stored outside of your music > itunes folder
Chances are they could be burried somewhere under your documents, downloads, desktop, ... we all have different storage and organization habits.
Then when you find the missing files, on the new computer you can do add to library and go to the folder on the other computer where the missing files are - if your systems are networked - or sneak them over using a USB thumb drive or portable hard drive if you have lots of files, or if you like to have an extra backup of that music, copy to optical disc.

  • Transfer from old eMac to new iMac

I just got a new iMac and want to transfer lots of stuff from my old eMac. I have a firewire but find that while it can be plugged into the eMac it is too large to plug into the iMac. Is there some kind of an adapter I can purchase to remedy this? Thanks.

To connect the eMac's FW 400 port to the Imac's FW 800 port, you will need a FW 6-pin to 9-pin cable.
Aside from that, you need to be very careful about transferring things from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac. I suggest Kappy's Guide; A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs

  • Having trouble transferring music from old PowerBook to new iMac

I'm having trouble transferring my iTunes music from my old PowerBook to my new iMac.  Trying to follow the online instructions by using an external hard drive to transfer from one to another.

    Hi Skingz,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Is the external hard drive that you are working with formatted for Mac OS Extended Journaled?   Is there enough space on it?
The process is the same regardless of the operating system you are using:
OS X Mountain Lion: View information about your disk
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11086
Formatting erases the contents of the external drive so be cautious.  Also this process is for any application, not just Aperture:
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

Try the steps in the article again.

If you are still not able to copy the library to your new computer this way, then the alternative approach would be to copy the music folder from your old computer to the external drive, and then add the music folder to your new, empty iTunes library on the iMac.   You'll have to recreate your playlists, etc, but at least you will have the music.

I hope this information helps ....

  • What do I need to migrate files from old eMac to new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac and need to transfer information from my old eMac to the new one. I have not even taken the iMac out of the box, just read over the booklet.
What do I need to have to be prepared to migrate information from the start up application?  USB cable? Firewire cable? I just want to be prepared so I can get it done at one setting.  There isn't a lot of room on the desk for 2 Mac's for an extended period of time.

When you boot the new Mac, choose Migration Assistant to transfer all your data.

  • Difficulties transferring data from old PC to new iMac

I'm currently helping my neighbors set up their new iMac, 27". They own an old PC that a friend built, and it runs Windows XP. The iMac came yesterday, and I was helping them get started with it this afternoon. In order to transfer data like their iTunes library, photos, etc., I took over an Iomega external HD to use. However, the PC wouldn't detect it. I used the USB cord supplied with the drive, in several different ports on the PC. The ports do work, as an iPhone I plugged into them was detected. I then tried the supplied FireWire cable, no dice there either. No recognition on the PC whatsoever.
So I went back to my house and got my other hard drive, a LaCie Starck. Plugged it in to their PC, no recognition. I formatted both drives as MS-DOS (FAT) with Disk Utility, and that did nothing.
So I went to burning DVD's. I popped one in, and proceeded to use iTunes' backup library function to burn their library to the DVD. I inserted the blank disk, and then iTunes showed that it was 'Checking media" up in the top of the application for 60 seconds or so, and then the Apple logo replaced that and nothing else happened.
I'm out of ideas here. What do I do to get this information over to the iMac? Why are my drives not being recognized? I'm quite confused.

I may be able to help re. the iTunes transfer; unfortunately, I was not able to copy the article because it is a pop up, but if you will go to the Finder Help menu (on the new Mac) and type in "transfer", one of the help articles will be instructions on how to transfer iTunes music from a PC to a Mac.
And, here is a general article which may be helpful:

  • Transfering iTunes From old PC to New PC

I have burned all the music from my old PC, on to DVD data discs. When I imported the songs into my library only the songs I ripped forom my music CD's show up in the library. The 500+ songs I purchased from iTunes did not import into the library. I have authorized my computer. Any suggestions? The songs I purchased from my old PC are on the DVD's.

    Terry,
    You'll need to
    i copy
the songs from the DVD to the new HD. Then 'Add' them into iTunes.
If you have the 'copy music to library' box checked on your Preferences, you may be able to just 'Add' them from the DVD and they will be copied into the iTunes folder structure on the new PC.

  • Bringing pictures from old eMac to new iMac

I have a new iMac with iPhoto '09. I want to bring over the pictures (with albums, slideshows, picture names, etc.) from my eMac with iPhoto '08. I have them set up with a Firewire connection. The last time I brought my pictures across computers (2003 - lime iMac to eMac), every picture was duplicated. I want to avoid the duplication. What is the best way to do this?

Quit iPhoto on both systems and drag the iPhoto library form the eMac to the pictures folder of the iMac - launch iPhoto
It will open and convert the library giving you what you had on the eMac - there is NO importing involved

  • Transferring settings from old Mac o new iMac

Hi! I just placed an order for a new iMac on the Apple store. Currently I sync my iPhone, iPad and iPods with my PowerBook G4. Once the new Mac arrives I plan to sync my iOS devices with it, I understand that there is a migration or setup assistant that will transfer all my settings from the old Mac to the new one.
Are there any tips or special precautions I must take? Should I use a USB cable, Firewire or use wi-fi?
    Thanks,
    Cesar
    PB G4 17" 1.33 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.5.8)   iPhone 3GS 16GB (iOS 4.2.1) iPad 32GB wifi+3G (iOS 4.2.1)

You can use an ethernet cable, a FireWire cable if your laptop has a FireWire port or a wireless network. In your case the ethernet is probably the easiest because even if your laptop has FW it is likely to be FW400 and the new iMac has FW800, so you would need an adapter or adapting cable.
You may wish to read up on the precautions for going from PowerPC to Intel Macs.

  • HT1589 Transfering iTunes from old HDD to new HDD

    Hi,..
The graphics card in my laptop that I had itunes on crashed so I took the hard drive out and placed it into my pc running win7X64bit, My question is, can I, or how do I move my itunes music /photos etc from my old laptop drive to my current C:// drive?
    Cheers

If the songs are purchased from itunes they need to be authorized to play on the new machine, before they will play, or be transferred to your ipod. Play one of the purchased songs in itunes, if the new machine is not yet authorized it will bring up a box asking you to enter the itunes account info used to purchase the music. Enter this info and the song should start playing. All songs purchased with that account will now play/transfer from that computer. If you have used multiple accounts to purchase music then each different account will have to be authorized on the new machine.

  • Transferring itunes from old desktop to new laptop

painstakingly ollowed instructions on how to use ipod mini as hard drive, but found out none of my music tranferred. i have access to my old itunes - can i transfer directly from desktop to laptop? thx.

    Hi there,
As i remember it Apple's answer is not insane.
Music sync'd to an iPod using iTunes doesnt show up as files (they're 'invisible'). As I remember it is only files that you hand copy to the mounted hard disk that do show up.
If that's true then to see no music files after an iTunes sync is normal. Problem is the usual utilities wont allow you to transfer the 'invisible' music up onto your new PC.
1/ Make sure music is transferred in 'hard disk mode' and if it doesnt then show up then it isnt copied.
2/ Use one of the un-usual utilities which circumvent Apple's attempt to prevent copying of music from iPod to a computer. E.g. http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/

  • Transferring iTunes from Windows PC to new iMac

    Hi guys,
I know this has probably been asked a hundred times but I cannot seem to find a definitive and straightforward answer.
Basically I have just bought a 27" iMac and would like to transfer my iTunes library and iPhone settings across to this beautiful new machine from my Windows XP PC as painlessly and as easily as possible.
I have been researching this and some people say download the content to a separate hard drive, others say use an ethernet cable, others say use homeshare - understandably i am a tad confused.
Any help, or a pointer to an idiot-proof guide would be extremely beneficial, I can't believe Apple don't have a step by step guide to doing this, seeing how soo many people are making the switch!!

That article is very helpful, but leaves out one important step: how to format the hard drive. Assuming you don't have a network connection and don't want to copy multiple GB to CDs (the PC doesn't have a DVD drive), then what? Copy to a hard drive. But how do you format that drive to work on Mac and Windows? Windows won't recognize a Mac-formatted drive. And I know Mac will only recognize one particular format, but I don't remember which one. So how to I set up a hard drive for a transfer?
