Transfering itunes to external HD from mac to PC

I have my itunes saved on an external Maxtor HD. The files all show up when viewing the HD on my mac, but none show up when viewing the HD if plugged into the PC. Is there something I'm not doing right?

  • Transferring large volume of files from mac to PC?

Hi i have a mac with osx 10.4.8 and a pc, i need to transfer a large amount of files from mac to pc (around 200GB)
Now i have lots of external HDs which are all used by either the PC or the macs. the ones formatted for the macs cannot be read atall by the PC without some expensive software, the PC formatted one i have appears to be readable on the mac, but when i try to copy the files onto it or change anything, i am not able to change/add anythingn due to permissions problems.
Not sure what to do, i have quite a few HDs with plenty of sapce, but if they are all in the wrong format i cant really wipe/reformat them easily with files on them, nor do i want to buy yet another HDD just to transfer some files....

1: Remove the data off the drive
You can do this by installing MacDrive on the Windows PC to access the Mac HTFS+ format
Or you can use a Mac to remove the data.
2: Format the drive on the PC (preferably) by right clicking on the drive and choosing format
A: If data on the drive will have larger than 4GB sized files, then the format you want is exFAT
(if your using Windows XP, you can download exFAT from Microsoft)
B: If the data on the drive will always have less than 4GB sized files, then you should choose FAT32 for most compatibility with all other machines.
3: If you can only format the drive on the Mac then open Apple's Disk Utility in the Utilities folder
Select the drive on the far left, it should have the makers name and a size, then click Partition.
Now select the box and click Options: MBR  Then select Format: exFAT or MSDOS (FAT32) and click Apply.
4: If any chance you need to secure delete any data remaining on the drive form being recovered, use the Erase with Zero (or 7x for very secure) before formatting.
Note: Formatting a drive on the PC there will be a option for NTFS, this is for access by Windows only, but software can be installed on the Mac to read/write this format.
If you use exFAT or FAT32, the Mac can read and write this format just like Windows can, no need for extra software.
Linux can read/write just about any format.

  • Can't see shared iTunes U or Podcasts from Mac on iPhone or iPad

Since update to iOS6, I don't see my shared iTunes U and Podcasts from my Mac on my iPhone or iPad.
What can be the reason and is there a solution?
    Thanks.

OK, I think I solved this issue by a workaround -
Uninstall the Podcasts and the iTunes U apps, restart the iOS device and then connect to the shared iTunes library from the Videos app on the iOS device.
BTW, I also noticed that the TV shows are not sorted anymore since the upgrade (looks like a bug to me).

  • WD external problems from MAC to PC

So I have 1TB WD external hard drive that I currently have formated for MS-DOS(FAT) so that I can use it both on MAC and PC. However, when I do connect to a PC, for whatever reason, it shows each file I have twice. One being highlighted and unopenable and the other fine (temp files?). Doesn't seem to a be a real issue just more of keeping the harddrive easy to navigate and sort. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
Also, on the pc there is no option to 'eject' the disc. Is this something with the harddrive or ****** windows?

  • Transferring my external drive from mac to windows

    Hi,
I have been having problems w/my itunes (taking forever to update my library).  I have and use my iMac.  Since Apple doesn't help with this problem (based on my seaches through apple support here), I called Geek Squad through Best Buy.  They were able to identify the file that is causing the problem.  The file is on my external hard drive, which is also where I store all my music.  She attempted to take it from my external and drag it into the garbage, but it won't allow for that b/c my external has to be reformatted (another error message I have had for a while).  Her suggestion was to hook up  my external hard drive to a windows computer to get that problem file off and then re-hook it up to my Mac computer.  This wont' reformat the external drive (I have to figure out this problem later) but she said if I can get rid of this on a PC, I should be able to access my itunes w/out waiting hours for the library to be updated.
So, my question is this:  If my external hard drive has been formatted for an apple computer and has only been used on an apple computer, is it going to damage anything if I hook it up to a PC?  I have all of my songs on this (they aren't on my iMac hard drive) and I don't want to damage these.  I am also considering just buying another external hard drive and transferring these tunes to that new one.   Thanks.

To tell what size the internal HD is open a new Finder window and on the left look for a drive probably called iMac HD then type Command I (I as in Ivan) and Command is the key next to the spacebar on your keyboard. It will tell you the capacity and look similar to:

  • ITunes won't sync from Mac to iPhone 6

I have a MacBook Pro using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
    I use iTunes 12.1.26.
I recently bought an iPhone 6, 64gb version 8.1.2 and am trying to put the music I have on iTunes on my Mac into my new iPhone 6.
    It's not working.
I connect the two via the USB cable that came with the phone, and the Mac registers that they are connected. While the two are connected I can play songs from my Mac on the iPhone if I have Home Sharing switched on, but that is it. When I try to sync them and transfer songs over, it says that the sync is in progress, and goes through 4 syncing steps in order; however the total time is only about 4 seconds and no music transfers. The total music is about 11gb and the iPhone does register that about that much memory should be used up by a sync. I have pressed every 'sync' button I can find more times than I can count and nothing works.
I have absolutely no idea what to do and no forum that I have been on yet has an explanation.
If anyone has any ideas for how to help me (using basic terms please because I'm not that savvy with computers) I would really appreciate it.

mine will appear to sync then after its complete the display bar showing memory usage  immediately retracts to how it was before syncing. I've tried turning off my phone and re-downloading the latest iTunes, I have a mac book pro. please help I only got a phone with a lot of memory so that I could have music!

  • Transferring itunes and ipod contents from family comp to new laptop

i got my ipod three years ago and installed it onto my only computer. now im in college and have my own laptop. how do i get my itunes and ipod contents that i've downloaded and bought onto my new laptop? i've tried downloading the software onto the new comp but when i sync my ipod it wants to erase all my songs. is there any way to keep everything i have just transfer it over the my new comp? (also my mom just got a nano and wants to know if she can have a separate itunes library and all on the family comp if mine has to stay there)
    dell   Windows 2000

"how do i get my itunes and ipod contents that i've downloaded and bought onto my new laptop?"
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
"When i sync my ipod it wants to erase all my songs"
When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Transferring iTunes library and iPhoto from 15inch MBP to new 13inch MBP

I have just taken delivery of a new MBP 13inch and wish to transfer Itunes
    ( 5,ooo tracks) and iPhoto( 4,000 photos)from the older 15inch MBP.
I have moved documents via IDisk as there were only a few.
    I have a firewire but it is a 400 at each end.The new 13inch requires an 800
I have backed up the old 15inch to a little Lacie external hard drive but the inputs on the hard drive are a different size on the 13inch so can't go that route.
Do I have to buy a firewire with 400 at one end and 800 at the other, with delays and delivery charges ( i live a day's journey from an Apple store)?
    Is there an easier way?
I am a Mobile me memeber so mail, contacts etc are not a problem.
    Any help appreciated.

To use a FW400 drive you will need a converter cable. You may find one at a local electronics outlet. If the drive supports USB and you have an appropriate cable you could use the drive in USB mode.
Otherwise you could connect both computers to your home network and transfer data that way using File Sharing - select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing." If you have an Ethernet cable you can connect the two directly by Ethernet cable and create a computer-to-computer network (could also do the same wirelessly.)

  • Transferring iTunes/iPod Touch  Data from One PC to Another

I have my iPod Touch synced to my Windows laptop. As I have a newer Windows PC, is it possible to transfer the entire iTunes library along with all the iPod Touch data onto my new PC without causing any problems when it comes to syncing my iPod Touch with the new PC?
Currently, if I plug my iPod into my new PC, it warms me that if I want to continue, my iPod will be wiped clean.

You can move your iTunes library from one PC to another from an external back up hard drive.
I don't know if there is a way to synch to your new computer without losing music and video off the Touch, I lost all that when I moved mine on to this new computer. I had all my library backed up to a hard drive anyway so was obviously able to put all of my library on to the new PC before synching the Touch.
I recall that before I synched I did transfer purchases from the touch to the PC as connecting did offer me the option to do that.
If you've not got a back up hard drive, I can't stress enough the importance of having one.

  • Reformat external drive from mac os to windows

the windows partition on my mac book pro is close to full.
i would like to use an external drive formatted for windows for my growing number of pc games (gw,tdu, fsx, dirt - which run great on the mac book pro windows partition btw).
i tried to reformat a mac formatted external drive using disc utility, erase, format volume, but only choices were mac os extended and unix - no fat32, dos, or windows choices.
if i start up my mac book pro using windows, the drive does not show up in the 'hard drives' section of 'my computer'
please let me know how to reformat this mac formatted external drive so i can use it when the mac book pro is running windows.
    thanks

Hi Stefan, Turns out my old ext hd was corrupt. Bought a new 300G G-Drive and got a brand new problem which you may have heard of - the dreaded hal.dll crash. My windows partition crashed and after much effort I finally have everything working.
Had to go to the mac store to get a boot camp 1.4 disk (mine was the original) was able to save files from the corrupt windows partition to my mac partition. next i used boot camp to revert to a single partition on my internal drive, saving my mac system and files. next used boot camp to partition the internal drive into big mac and 31G windows. reinstalled windows. next using disk utility i split my 300G external into 10 30G partitions using your GUID suggestion and formatting in ms-dos(fat32) so my mac could read/write to it. dragged the files i saved to the 30G partitions and they work fine. loaded more games into the 30G partitions and they also are working fine.
could not have done it without your pointing out the GUID option.
    vielen dank, john

  • Transferring iTunes Library file to new Mac

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and have tried to transfer my iTunes Library files from my old MacBook Pro to my new one.  Both are running iTunes 11.  All music, video, apps etc are stored on an external drive which iTunes is set to look at.  I copied the 'iTunes' folder from my 'Music' folder on my old MacBook Pro to an external hard drive and then plugged it in to my new MacBook pro and replaced the 'iTunes' folder in my 'Music' folder with the existing contents.  However when opening iTunes 11 on my new MacBook Pro iTunes seems to create a new blank library file and overwrite the one I previously copied.  Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Are just your media are stored on the external, or is the whole iTunes library (which includes artwork files, the central iTunes Librarby.itl files, and other things)?
If the whole iTunes library, there's no need to copy the unused folder on your old computer. Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the library file on the external.
If you keep just your media on the external, copying your library folder is correct.  I don't know why iTunes 11 is erasing it.  One thing though is I believe the media folder location is stored in preferences.  I know I once changed it on my older iTunes version where I have multiple libraries and when I changed it for one it did it to them all.  You may have to configure this in iTunes preferences though that still doesn't explain why it erases the copied library folder.

  • Streaming rented iTunes movie to ATV2 from Mac

I rented a movie from iTunes and downloaded it to my Mac — with the idea that I could elect to view it on either my iPod or stream it to my ATV2. I chose to do the latter, but no go. Apple says (or seems to say) that you must own the iTunes movie to be able to stream it to the ATV2. When I bought the ATV2 at my Apple store, I was emphatically told that "If it's in your iTunes library, you can stream it to your ATV2." Since the direct streaming from iTunes to ATV2 has significant issues (stalling part way through even on a fast line), I thought a direct download to my Mac was the answer — to be streamed from there via my network. What the #*^^ is the truth about this. In another post in this forum, a person says he is regularly doing such streaming of a rented iTunes item that he has downloaded to his Mac!

OK — I've gotten things resolved. Unplugged and replugged the ATV2 for a reset. Now everything streams just fine — even a rented iTunes movie from my Mac. Too, I have now gone into the ATV2 settings and instructed it to select standard (non-HD) movies for rentals. This is many times faster and on our large flat screen Sony, I see no difference. In any case, HD or not, the wise thing to do is to do your download well in advance of viewing — i.e. hours. The flash memory in the ATV2 should hold it for at least 48 hours (or so Apple Support tells me). As it turns out, "streaming", even with a 10 mb line and an "N" wireless system, streaming is not exactly streaming. But it comes closer to it if you select non-HD movies.

  • IPhone & iTunes - how to change from Mac to PC?

I have been sync'ing my iPhone 4S on a Macbook Pro. I need to switch to a PC.
I have searched Google and Apple Support but all I can find are ways to convert from PC to Mac.
I've imported the library.xml I copied from the Mac and copied my iTunes Music to the PC.
When I plug in the iPhone on the PC, it just recognizes it as a mobile device and doesn't connect it to iTunes.
Is there some documentation on how to convert from iTunes/iPhone on Mac to iTunes/iPhone on a PC?
