Transfering library and music between HDs

Hello,
I had a problem with one of my partitions on my original HD, but luckily I was able to salvage practically everything, including my iTunes library files and music.
I now have a second HD in my PowerMac G5 (on which a new system has been installed), and all my files have been transferred. But I can't seem to tell iTunes how to use the new folder for my MP3 files.
I managed to copy the original iTunes library, but even if I change the Music Folder in iTunes' prefs and edit the library.xml file to include the new location of my MP3s, iTunes can't seem to forget about the original locations.
I have around 11k tunes in my library, and I don't want to lose the ratings on those tunes.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Loa

Open iTunes and go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>General and at the top you'll find a button for pointing iTunes to the location of your music folder. You'll find a lot more detail on keeping your music on a different drive in this article: Moving your iTunes Music Folder

I original purchased a macnotebook and now have an Ipad and Imac. I had thought cloud would allow me to share my photos and music at home between devices? I can't seem to get my Imac and Notebooks to share wirelessley? Could anyone give me any tips on how to get them linked up?
    Thanks. Nick

You might want to explore the concept of "build and export cache" in tools/cache.  Not all data is written to the file, some is held in an XMP file, which has same name as file.  You want them both to transfer at same time.
To see if you have XMP files click on view/show hidden files.
    Don't know much about collections.

  • How do I share photos and music between different user accounts on the same macbook

How do I share photos and music between different user accounts on the same Macbook? i.e. I want all to be able to access family photos when logged into their respective accounts. Same goes for the iTunes library. Hope this is possible...
    Thanks!

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using iCloud Photo Sharing, if the privacy implications don't bother you. The images will be stored temporarily on Apple servers.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support articles linked below.

There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • HT204053 how do I share calendars and music between two ID's?

How do I share calendars and music between two Apple ID's?  We have a Mac Pro and two Iphones.  Currently we utilize one ID between the Iphones in order to sync the calendars and music.

You can privately share a calendar between devices using different iCloud IDs as explained here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mm6b1a8694.  Even if your devices use different IDs for iCloud you can continue to share the same ID for iTunes to share your music and other purchased media.  The ID you use on a device for iCloud does not need to be the same as the ID used for iCloud.

  • Transfer iTunes Library and Music to new computer

I know this has probably been asked many times before but can anyone help me transfer my iTunes Library and Music files to my new computer. I just bought a new iMac and need to move things. I had previously moved my Music files to my external hard drive as my old computer hard drive was getting full. So I have my Library on my old computer and my Music files on my external hard drive. I want to transfer both onto my new computer (both on internal hard drive).
    How do I do this?

Yes, read the other discussion and what I am saying to do is copy the iTunes folder from the internal drive onto the external drive with the music already stored there.
You should now be able to open the library directly from that location using the linked start up directions from the other thread. If that works, you can then move the drive to another computer and open the library there using the same start up instructions.

  • Transfering iTunes and music library to another computer

    Hello,
I just got a new computer and I want to transfer my iTunes and music library to it. I would normally just transfer the files to the new computer, install iTunes, and rebuild my library, but there are two things: 1) I don't want to lose my playlists and 2) I have purchased music from the iTunes Music Store and I'm not sure it will play if I do it like that.
I have a feeling it has to do with deauthorizing the old computer.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance.

You will definitely have to authorize your new computer. And if you won't be using the old one to play purchased songs any more, you should de-authorize it. Have a look at:

  • Using the same photos and music between two user accounts in the same Mac

    Hi,
I think this question might have already been asked in the forum.
    1. I have one MacBook Pro and two user accounts (One for me and one for my wife)
    2. We are having two seperate iPhones with seperate AppleIDs
    3. We want to maintain the apps / calendar / mail / reminders / contacts as seperate - Through iCloud (Seperate Apple ID approach) - All this is fine
    4. All we want to have it shared is the Music files and the Photo library without duplicating
I have tried the shared folder approach for the music and having the iTunes point to that directory for the libary location in the preferences but unfortunately if she adds a folder to the library mine does not get updated unless I do a add folder to library and vice versa.
Whats the best way to deal with the Photos / Music sharing between two user accounts on the same mac
    Thanks
    Shas

  • Having trouble transferring library and playlists from PC to new iMac

I just purchased a new iMac and I have imported my music via a hard drive from my PC to the Mac.  I have the library and the playlists in the Mac but I do not have the play counts.  I would also like to sync my iPhone to the iMac library but it wants to erase all the data on my iPhone and replace it with the stuff from the iMac library.  Am I doing something wrong?  How can I get my library from the PC to the Mac correctly?  Any help would be great!  Thanks!

Your phone is telling me you ended up not really moving the old library but somehow created a new library.  An i-device can only sync with one library at a time and your phone is reacting as though it never saw this library.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Trouble transfering video and music!

I bought a new laptop, authorized it to my itunes acct. I tried to transfer my video and music from my ipod but it didn't transfer it all. I've tried draging them from my ipod to my laptop (library) but it doesn't let me. There are also these "i" symbols at the end of the file names. Can anybody enlighten me?!

If you're using iTunes 7, you can copy purchased items (and only those) back to iTunes directly. But you cannot drag-copy them, you have to use the Transfer Purchases from iPod command under the File menu.
If you're not using iTunes 7 or want to copy other tracks, the easiest way will be to search VersionTracker for "iPod". You'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your tracks and your playlists from your iPod back to your PC.
It's also possible to do this manually, but the procedure is rather involved. If you're interested, though, see this thread:

If you still have your old computer, take a look at these threads that cover how to move your iTunes library to your new computer:

  • Can I move PARTIAL library and music files to a 2nd authorized computer?

On my main desktop computer I have a vast library of music in iTunes. I've created a separate "smart" playlist that includes only my 4- and 5-star rated songs. I want to move these and ONLY these to my laptop, and not the entire library. Is there a way to do this?

Sure. What kind of a setup do you have? Are both PCs on the same network with file sharing turned on? Or do you have an external hard drive or thumb drive everything will fit on?
All you need to do is open that playlist, go to the itunes menu > edit > select all.
Click your mouse on the highlighted bundle and drag it over to whatever folder you want to drop it in - either the network share of a laptop folder, or the storage device. Then add them to itunes once they are on the laptop's hard drive.
You could also use Home Sharing, if the laptop and desktop are set up on your home network.

  • HT201250 After setting up my time capsule, I noticed that my iphoto library and music was not backed up.  The documents and .jpg's was back up, do I need to do something else in the set up?

After setting up the time capsule, and completing a full back up, I noticed my iphotos and music was not backup.  I have all my documents and .jpg files but no music from Itunes or photos from iphoto?  Do I need to set something else up?

Can I ask you how you know your photos and music are not backed up?
Open a Finder window to your Pictures folder (you should see your current iPhoto Library file). Go to the Time Machine icon in the menubar, then click Enter Time Machine to use the TM interface, and go back in time to a random point. Is the iPhoto Library file still there? If so, it's being backed up.
If not, is there any chance you've excluded those folders from TM preferences? Click Options on the TM system preference panel and see if you have exclusions.

  • Transferring Library and Podcast List from One Computer to Another

    IPOD Classic.
I have set up Itunes on Compaq XP laptop and have my library and Podcast subcription list on it.
NOw I have a new desktop Gateway with Vista and have downloaded the itunes program from the apple site.
I desire to get everything from the laptop over to the new computer. so that I dont have to go and resubcribe to all of the podcasts on the new computer, and so that I dont have to try to figure out how to resave everything on ipod to current Vista computer.
How do I accomplish the above?
When I plug Ipod into new computer it asks me if I want to erase and sync to the new Itunes on new computer but it doesnt ask me if I want to transfer from current Ipod anything to the new computer.
Is there a file on the old computer that I can find that stores all the info and just transfer it over using a USB or an external Hard Drive.
thanks in advance for you help.

I'm having a similar problem, however my old computer died. I cannot get access to it. I'm trying to get my old itunes library associated with my new computer now, but it seems like I need to have access to my old computer? Is there any way to transfer my library to my new computer without needing to access the old one?

    Hi
Is there a way (app or otherwise) to transfer photos and videos between an iPhone 4S and an iPad WITHOUT having to go via iTunes on another Mac/PC?
I saw 'Bump' but it seems limited to just contacts and photos.
