Transfering library DATA to new MBP- Help!

Hi Folks,
For the last few years I've been using a PC, with all my music on the internal hard drive, and external hard drive on which I backed all the music up onto incase the PC went belly up. My itunes library always accessed the files on the C drive.
Now I have a shiny new MBP and I want to add the music on the external hard drive (which seems to be read-only when connected to the MBP, any idea's why?) to my itunes library, but I want to retain all the information from my original library on my PC's C drive (particularly as I only have about half the songs "checked" for syncing with my ipod, more on which in a sec!).
So I copied the itunes library data files onto the new MBP, but as I expected, when it loaded up the info (with the external hard drive connected) the original library mapped all the songs to the C drive, leaving the grey ! mark next to all the songs. And if I add all the files to itunes by dragging the folder from the external hard drive into the itunes window, then I'm left with a duplicate of every song, of course without any corresponding data (e.g. checked, last played).
Thus the question is, how do I import the songs on my external hard drive into the library, as well as all the library information from my PC? (and also, why is the external harddrive read only?)
This is my first Mac, so please be gentle!
Much appreciated,
Daniel

Not sure I am sending to the right person, but I want to back up my library/songs, video to an external hard drive. the back up process in iTunes seems to only want to back up to a disk. I'm sure I could drag and drop from itunes to the external hd, but is there a better way?
finally, looking for a process to follow when adding new music to itunes and copying to the external hd.
any assistance would be appreciated.

  • My MBP display is not working.  Need to move data to new MBP Retina.

    Hello.
My 3 yr old MBP display failed (display just showing vertical and horizontal lines).
I bought a new MBP Retina today.
Genius Bar told me to simply attach FireWire, then press "T" on old MBP to boot in Target Mode.
Then, look for old MBP HD icon on new MBP Retina desktop.
I cannot find old MBP icon on desktop.
I cannot transfer data from old MBP to new MBP Retina.
    Any help would be appreciated?

Genius bar told you right - you need to start your old MBP up into target mode (booting while hold down the T key) but you need to have the right FireWire cable hooked up to the machines before you boot either. What year is your old model? Does it hve FW400 or FW800?
Here are the instructions from Apple - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661. Take a look at it and see if it helps. Also make sure that you have the Finder set so that external and remote disks will show up on your Desktop. When the disk mounts you can either just copy over files or, if you want to transfer accounts and associated directories, use Migration Assistant in your Utilities folder to copy over the info.
Good luck - call back if it's not working.

  • After transferring all songs to new MBP, songs stop short in iTunes

I have a strange situation here. I bought my wife a new MBP 13" recently and started having a problem with song playback in iTunes. I copied all the songs in her iTunes library from her old MacBook to the new MBP. (The new MBP is running Lion 10.7.2, btw). All the artists and songs show up in iTunes on the new Mac. That's good.
However, on the new MBP in iTunes (v10.5.2), many songs will play and then the audio will stop short of the end of the track. For example, using one song as a test, I picked a track that is 4:19 long. iTunes will play about 4 minutes, then the audio will end abrubtly with about :30 left. This doesn't happen on her old MacBook, running the same version of iTunes, and playing the same track.
Both versions of iTunes indicate the track duration is 4:19. I've tested the same song on both Macs to confirm this ONLY happens on her new MBP. And when she transferred the test song to her iPod Touch, the song also ends abruptly before its 4:19 length.
I've now copied her library from her old Mac to the new one a 2nd time, and still get the same issue. Any ideas peeps?

I'm having this issue also, it's really annoying. I delete and download from "purchases" in the store but then another will pop up.. does it on my phone and shuffles as well as in Itunes. I talked to apple and they gave me a 5 song credit but no way to fix the problem.  Going to have to hit them again.
I thought I migh have had a virus or a hacker somewhere so I erased my drive(s) and my phone and started from scratch, not even from a back up and re installed everything fresh.. still happening so it's definitly Itunes.

  • Transfering Library Data File from iPod

Lost my computer to a backdoor trojan horse yesterday.
My Music is on an external harddrive, so no worries there. I saved an old library data file from 2 months ago, but have changed many things since then. Is there anyway to get the library data file on the iPod and transfer it to iTunes?
I have the library from 2months ago on iTunes, and have the iPod set up on manual mode for the moment. the iPod had the new iTunes 7 version on it.
Thanks for any help out there.

Hopefully I made sense in my post. No one knows a way to do this?

  • How do I transfer only part of my library to a new MBP?

My son just got a new MBP for college. What is the best way to transfer *only his music and playlists* to his new MBP?

The portable Firewire drive is probably a faster option.
If playcounts, etc are important to him or if you want to try and do this with the least amount of work on your part, I would plug in the portable drive to your computer and drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
Now take he drive and plug it into his new Mac. Again, drag & drop your iTunes folder to his Mac's internal drive and copy the entire thing. I would use the default location of his user account -> Music folder.
If he opens iTunes now it should read the entire library in and will appear just like it does on your computer. If not you can force iTunes to see it by opening iTunes with these instructions and pointing it to the newly copies in library...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
At this point he has everything and now to get rid of yoru stuff and free up his hard drive, he can simply start deleting everything out of the library he is not interested in. Let him do all the work there.
All playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc. are all preserved and you only had to do two things, copy that folder twice.
Let me know if the above presents an issue and we need to do it a different way.

    Patrick

The heat was pretty bad, like i said, botom of case getting to massive temperatures. Even when just surfing the net etc. The problem for me was that it was so hot that you couldnt touch it for more than about a second, and you certianly couldnt use it on your lap. I also found that the fans were not coming on to a high setting when the laptop was really hot, and this was not helping the issue. Apple were amazing though. I rang them and they ran me through some tests, these didnt work so i said i wanted a replacement, they didnt argue or try to put me off though. They fully respected my desicion and ordered me a new laptop the same day. I even get to keep the old one untill after the replacement arrives so that i can do the whole sync thing that caused me to start this topic!

  • Computer that housed my itunes died and I trying to get my library on the new computer--help!

Have itunes in my ipod nano but how do I get it to sync to new computer?  Also have my entire library in computer that died.  Is there anyway to get my itunes off that computer onto my new tower.

Yeah... that's exactly the way it is supposed to work.  Sharing the library does not move it anywhere.
To move the library to the new computer, copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

  • Can I pick what is transferred from iMac to new MBP ?? (iMac larger HD)

    Hi everyone
My new 17" MBP 2.33/2GB/7200rpm100gb laptop shipped today (after a weeks delay) and should arrive Thurs 16th in CT.
    I also own iMac G5 2.1 Ghz, 20", an eMac 1Ghz G4, and now, finally deceased PowerBook G3 500 Pismo (2000), 1GB RAM; 60gb 7200rpm.
When I got my iMac (which I use at work & home) I transfered via firewire everything from my PB G3 500, the setup program on iMac just transferred everything and only gave me the option to transfer or not.
But my iMac disk, 250GB, is 4 gb short of being full from music and work files). Can I pick and choose which files or programs are transferred to new 100gb drive ?? I don't want all the programs and files sent.
I really only want Mail/Address Book/Calender files, accounts and contacts, plus Safari's bookmarks.
I don't want all keychains, extra programs and all music files sent.

Migration Assistant won't provide file level transfers. It's also not a good way to transfer data between PPC and Intel Macs. Your best option is to simply copy the files from one computer to the other. You can connect the computers via network and transfer using file sharing or you can connect them via Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode.
You will find the Mail and Safari data in /Home/Library/Mail/ and /Home/Library/Safari/ folders, respectively. Address Book and iCal data are found in /Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ folder and /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal/ folder, respectively. Be sure to also copy the preference files from the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder for Mail, Safari, Address Book, and iCal. They will start with "com.apple." and end with ".plist".
Because your older Macs are PPC machines avoid transferring anything other than your data files. Intel and PPC software are not compatible.

  • Transferring library to a new computer 2014

I don't see any way to actually contact Customer Service if I do not have a serial number for an iPad, iPhone, Mac, etc. I have PC laptops. I can access iTunes, buy songs, etc. and have a library. Here is the question/problem:
About 3 months ago, my registered work computer suddenly no longer had access to my main library (which is on my home computer). I have no idea why this happened. Now, I have just purchased a new PC laptop for home, which I intend to set up over the next few days. ALSO, I am getting a new PC laptop at work. Since I will no longer have my old computers, I need to know how to make sure EVERYTHING in the main library is transferred to the new computers when I register them.
Since Apple Customer Service is so unfriendly to non-Mac users, I came here for help.

Do you still have the "home" computer with your current library. See this migrate iTunes library post for suggestions, otherwise see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. See also Re: Sync iPhone with different computers?

  • Transferring library to a new computer

How do I transfer my musiclibrary for my 60gb photoipod from my old laptop to my new PC? can I transfer from my ipod directly to my new computer?
    ipod photo   Windows XP

If the songs are already on the iPod try this.
select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.

  • Transferring iphone data to new computer

My IBM thinkpad crashed and I had to reboot XP. I downloaded itunes but I can't see how to transfer my music, podcasts, e-mail settings, my outlook contacts and calendar back to the computer. Does anyone have a step by step way to do this? I don't want to erase the iphone data. thanks much, kate

    You don't maintain a backup?
iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone - but this is for content purchased or acquired from the iTunes Store only. Any content - music or video acquired elsewhere that was transferred from iTunes to your iPhone will not be transferred.
With your iPhone connected and available in the iTunes source list, at the menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
The sync process for contact information, calendar events and bookmarks is bidirectional. Be sure to enter at least one contact in Outlook's address book and one calendar event in Outlook's calendar before syncing. Pay attention to any warning messages or prompts provided. If you don't understand or aren't sure about the prompt provided, cancel until you are sure.
You must re-enter your email account setup information in Outlook. The sync process for email account setup information is not bidirectional.
Maintaining a backup of your important data is very important regardless the platform but even more important with a Windows PC due to constant virus, adware and spyware concerns and for a system wide crash as you experienced.

  • Xfer 7100 data to new MBP

Is there way to connect my old 7100 to my new Mac so I can copy the old data files to my new machine (Macbook Pro)?

It has an AAUI-15 \[uncommitted] Ethernet port. All you need is a transceiver (readily available on the used market) to commit it to RJ45 twisted-pair and you have an Ethernet connection. 7.5.3 and later networking can be accomplished without too much trouble.

  • Planning to purchase new MBP help!

I'm planning to buy the MBP tomorrow at the Southlake, TX store......any buying advice.
    Thanks

    yeah...dont buy one.
seriously though, if you need one now or have been planning on buying it for a while, then perhaps this wont matter to you. but there is a good amount of evidence that the MBP will be updated soon, potentially with Santa Rosa and/or LED screens. I just bought one last week so....I am potentially in the same boat, except that its too late for me. However, there is something to be said for the fact that no matter when you buy a new Mac there will always be some big update coming soon that you are going to miss out on, if not this one, then some other one.
    Basically...take a look at this

  • Transferring apps, data & settings between MBP

My Retina MacBook Pro is on it's way from China!
I have a couple of questions.
What's the best way to move my apps, music, photos, settings from my mid 2009 MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro when it arrives.
Once I have everything off my old MacBook Pro, what's the best way to clear it out so that I can sell or give to a family member?
My first thought on Q1 is to make a bootable backup with Carbon Copy Cloner to an external drive from my old MacBook Pro and then restore to the new Retina MacBook Pro.
Would this cause any problems? or is there a migration assistant that would move everything over.
For Q2, can I just format the drive in the old MacBook Pro and then run the Mountain Lion install up to the point of setting up iCloud?  Or is there a better way to do this?
    Thanks!

  • Transferring old data to new iPod -- will it remove new apps that come with my new one?

My old iPod Touch is a 2nd generation, IOS 4.2.1, and I now have an iPod Touch 4th generation arriving with either IOS 5 or 6.
I want to transfer my game apps progress -- which I don't want to lose!! --  from the old device to the new device, and I've found out from these discussions that I need to make a backup then restore from backup to the new device, treating it not as a new device.
But does this mean that all the new-to-me app features that come pre-loaded on my 4th generation will be wiped out in the process?
Obviously the 4th generation comes with things my 2nd generation never had, and needless to say I want those to still be there when I add all my old games and other apps.
Can anyone assure me that in the "restore from backup" to my new device, everything from my old iPod will be added to my new one, but won't replace and or wipe out of existence any new features already loaded on my new iPod?
    My priorities/worries are:
Not losing any game progress in the transfer,
But also not losing any newer factory-loaded apps or features on the newer iPod, in the transfer.
    Thanks for any assistance.

Thank you lllaass, this is reassuring!
So the "restore" adds to what's on the new iPod, not throws it all out/replaces -- good to know. Many thanks.
