What you can do is to synchronize your iPod with one library and then import your iPod contents to the library you want on your notebook using an iPod to PC transfer software like CopyTrans http://www.copytrans.net
By the way, the same software maker has a "multiple iTunes libraries" management tool that might make your life easier.

I have multiple libraries on XP via Windows login (four total). I purchased a notebook with Vista and new iTunes allowing multiple libraries. I want to transfer these libraries to Vista either retaining them, or creating only one library, any thoughts, thanks

  • Transferring library from XP to Vista

Can someone help me with moving my library from an XP machine to Vista. So my music's on an external HDD (call this E:). Let's say I copy this to the vista computer, and its still on E: (making things simple). Where do I copy the files from the c:\docs&settings\username\my docs\my music\itunes in xp to, in vista, so it can pick it up?
Are there any special steps i need to take, like booting up itunes once before copying to create an initial itunes music library file? Or holding shift on first startup to use an existing itunes music folder?
    Cheers.

I'm so lost right now with the same issue. I'm trying to transfer all my itunes data from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate (I don't have my mp3s in the designated itunes folder, I manage the directories manually). Right now I have xp on my old hdd and vista is on my new one, set up so I can drag stuff from the old to the new, but since the directory structure is different, I don't know where to put the old "My Music" folder which held all my songs...
I mean, I just want everything to stay the same as far as itunes goes. The only tutorial I've seen regarding this has been for those who let itunes manage and name their music. What is there to do?

  • Moved iTunes library to Vista PC but iTunes 'can't find music files'. Help!

I'm running iTunes 7.1.1 on a new Vista PC and I followed the instructions on this support site for transferring the library using an iPod.
All songs (with artwork) are showing in the new PC's iTunes library, BUT all have a '!' symbol to the left and refuse to play. It offers to let me find them, but this would take hours for the thousands of tracks. I've tried consolidating but to no effect. All the music files are in the iTunes library folder, so why can't iTunes access them?

  • Transfer of Itunes Library to Vista

I have a single PC running Media Center Edition with an 80Gb hard drive. I bought a new 750Gb drive and decided to install Vista on it. Both drives are installed and I can boot to Vista by swapping the SATA drive cable. I have installed Itunes under Vista, and would like to move my Music Library to a partition on the new drive. I have not been successful in getting Itunes to see the old location for the library <it does not display the songs that I know are there>. The old music library is on the old drive, which is accessible by Vista. Thanks for any suggestions on this issue!

I have a similar problem. On my old pc running XP my music was stored on an external hard drive and mapped accordingly. I have just brought a new pc running Vista and can't see the music on the external drive, even whn mapped accordingly.
I can go in through my computer find the music files and double click on a song and it plays and then gets transfered into my library.
I can disconnect the external drive, reconnect it to the old pc and everything works great.
Any ideas would be greatful otherwis I am going to have to listen to 16000 songs!

  • Transferring Library

I have Windows Vista. I would like to transfer my iTunes library from one User Account to a new User Account. How do I do this? I was having problems with old user account (couldn't access internet) so I created a new user account and transferred some things but I'm not sure how to transfer my Itunes library.

Here is one way of doing it, assuming you have a standard arrangement with all your music in the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder in Music.
Move the iTunes folder in your old account to a shared folder on your PC, I don't have Vista so I don't know the specifics. If you want to be more conservative, you could copy your iTunes folder rather than moving it assuming you have room.
Then login to your new account and start iTunes with the shift key held down. When asked to choose a library, navigate to the iTunes folder in the shared folder and choose iTunes Library.itl.
This would run iTunes from the shared folder, there would be another step if you wanted iTunes actually in the new user account.

  • Unable to share library on Vista x64

I am running a new installation of Vista Enterprise SP1 x64 w/ iTunes 7.6.2.9. After enabling sharing, I cannot see any other libraries on the same subnet. Other's who see my library get an error when connecting: "The shared library 'my library' is not responding (-3259). Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689"
I get the same issues with the Vista firewall turned off. Not running any other firewalls. I have allowed iTunes on the firewall rules when prompted and have verified it is allowed.

yes. The file I installed from was itunes64setup.exe

  • My iTunes library is on an old computer. Not enough memory to consolidate the associated MP3 files. Transferred library to new computer. How can I add the MP3's without having to re load every file / folder again? Thanks.

Hello, I'm trying to transfer my iTunes library from an old computer with small hard drive to a new windows 8 laptop.  Much of my library consists of links to MP3/ 4 files etc but there isn't enough harddrive memory to consolidate the files into iTunes music folder.  I downloaded the library onto an external hardrive and have installed it on the new computer.  All files that were in iTunes music (now iTunes Media file) work fine.  I have transferred over all my MP3 files but of course iTunes library wont play the file as there is no established link to the file and it asks whether iTunes should locate the file. I don't want to have to import every MP3 file/ folder all over again and then delete the unlinked entries in iTunes as this will take way too much time.  Is there a way to sync all of these MP3 files to iTunes automatically or do I need to go back to start and somehow try and put the library back onto the hard drive and get the files consolidated to that from my old computer?  Any help most gratefully recieved. Thanks.

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • How to move itunes library .New vista pc &keep music on an external drive?

I'm moving from a Windows XP machine to a new Vista machine. All my music is on an external hd that I conenct via usb. Before giving away my old lap I backup the itunes files named itunes.itl, itunesmusic library.xml, albun art work folder
I installed itunes 7.2 and then I go to the edit preferences and change the music folder to f;//my music son itunes gets the music from my external hard drive.
Then i copy the itunes files that i back up into the the c ;users itunes folder.
WHEN i open itunes it start loading my library but suddenly stops and somtekind of error as file lock appears. son i unistall itunes an reistall it. but need to install it rigth so i can keep with my playlist etc.
    I aloso
tried to add all my music to the new library. So i go to add folder to library and itunes starts getting some songs (i have more than 10000) but after a few minutes it suddenly stops and no songs were added to the library. and itunes freezes, so the only way to go ,is control alt delete ,stop itunes and start again.
I triend adding folder by folder , my music is organized as example. each floder has artist album and songs but I have to many folders . i tried adding one folder each time it ,instead off adding the my music folder with all the subfloders and it seems to work but it is going to take me months to finish.
does some one knows what should i do ? or why itunes sotps suddenly? or what is the right procedure i should follow to keep my music in the external hard drive and continue with my play lists.?it is like a new installation with all the music in an external hd, an I want to keep it that way.
Does some one know if i have to do something with the ituneslibrary files befre copynig then to the new ditunes directory created with the new installation , in refering as permits or porperties ets?
what i want to do is a clear new installation of itunes and keep my music in the external usb hard drive , but keep or restore my playlists and library that i back up before.?

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • ITunes can't access shared library when Vista parental controls are on

I started a thread back on March 1 2008, but it got archived before it could be answered, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1420673&tstart=0
I'm using 64 bit Vista with iTunes version of 8.0.2.20, but I don't believe this issue has anything to do with the 64 bit versus 32 bit iTunes versions.
    The exact message is:
"The shared library "libraryname" is not responding. (-39)
Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
But if I turn off Parental Controls, the shared library is accessible, it all works fine. This has nothing to do with the iTunes store (and potential web site blocking), I just want to allow shared library access while leaving parental controls on.
    Any ideas?

This question has been around for almost two years now with no answer...very frustrating and disappointing that no one from Apple can step in and assist. I have set up the port number on my firewalls, both Windows and McAfee, as per the iTunes message and it still does not work...so I am now at a loss.
Turn off parental conrols and it all works perfectly...turn it on and library is visible but not accessible...PLEASE can someone help with this!!!
    Thanks.

  • Trying to Home share an itunes library from Vista laptop to Windows 8 laptop

Alright, so both laptops have been setup the same, home sharing turned on, exact same apple id and password. Both computers can see each other in the dropdown menu for "library",  HOWEVER, while the Vista laptop can see & import the library from the Windows 8 laptop, then Windows 8 laptop cannot see & therefore not import the library from the Vista laptop & out of the system without issue, the router has been checked to ensure that nothing is standing in the way on that end either. Is this some sort of backwards incompatibility? Or am I overlooking something  obscenely obvious? Any and all help is welcome, I have looked at a large number of discussions here and throughout the web already, nothing seems to work for my situation. Please help!!!

    Hello there MicknMadd,
It sounds like one of your computers can see the others library and import from it, but the other does not. You've done a lot of great troubleshooting and verification already, and I would recommend steps 5-7 from the following article to help further troubleshoot:
    Troubleshooting Home Sharing
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    5. Check Firewall settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
For more information on ports used by Apple products, see Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products.
    6. Quit and reopen apps and iTunes
If connectivity issues persist, quit and reopen iTunes on your computer. Then, quit and reopen the apps on your iOS device.
Note that Home Sharing cannot transfer or stream audiobook content purchased from Audible.com. See Audible.com for information on using their content with multiple devices.
    7. Restart your network router
Restart your home network router using the method recommended in documentation from the manufacturer. This may include disconnecting the power cord for thirty seconds or more.
Note: During this period, Internet services such as a VoIP-based phone will not work, and any additional routers may need to be reset in sequence.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Transfering library from one itunes account to another itunes account

Is it possible to transfer my library from my ipod touch itunes account to my ipod nano itune account?
If it is possible how would I go about in transferring my library or some of my songs between accounts?

Ok first of all, you don't need different iTunes libraries (if that is what you mean by "accounts") for each iPod. You can plug many different iPods into the same library and use them with the same library. And you can even sync each iPod in a different way from the others, still using the same library.
So is that what you are wanting to do, have everything in one library and use both iPod with that one library?
Or am I misunderstanding the question?

  • Using one iTunes library with Vista and XP on a single PC

Since I have converted my whole CD collection into AAC, my iTunes library
is quite large. I have now installed Vista on a second partition as dual-boot
with my old XP. I would like to access my iTunes library with both OSs - but can (and how) this be done ? I already changed the location in both Itunes to the same path, but the second iTunes running under Vista isnt able to import the songs.
    Any hints?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

It's the "itunes library.itl" file in Windows, and the same thing without the itl file extension on Macs.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
You might be able to get it to update both copies in each partition with something like TuneRanger or SuperSync. That would run into some money, esp a Tune Ranger license for both Mac and Windows.
Why not put your ITL file on a USB stick or external hard drive, and run your itunes library from that? You can tell the Mac to use the .itl for iTunes by changing properties on it. That's what I did so I can sync my iPods from either my XP PC or Mac and not get that dratted message about "iPod synced to another library".

  • I have bought a computer and authorised it and transfered library to it. Trouble is most of the songs have been duplicated 5 times and will take forever to delete one at a time. Can I select delete all exact duplicates in one go??

My new computer runs windows 7. I have transfered my library from my old computer to the new one but the library songs are duplicated 5 times.  How do I remove the exact duplicates easily without deleting every one individually.  When I am satisfied with the new computer and the itunes do I then de authorise the old one.

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • Transferred library from old PC to new, lost all files dl'd from ITunes

Transferred music files from old pc to new with minimal difficulty, but have now realized all songs downloaded to my library from ITunes have failed to make the trip!
I used the Ipod itself to transfer the files, as I couldn't figure out how to get the 2 pc's to transfer files via a wireless connection. Now my 60gb Ipod which had ~5800 songs using ~22gb its memory states it has 5275 songs on it and only 15.7gb available. Where did I manage to screw this up?
I imagine there is a problem where this new computer has not been authorized. True? When I first download some new songs from Itunes, will it then be authorized and my songs will reappear? Why is the amount of memory affected?
Thanks mucho for any available help. I have searched for quite a while, but haven't been able to find someone who has had the same experience or trouble.
    G

I'd imagine that's because you had no music files on your newly reformatted drive, and when you reattached your shuffle it loaded an empty file, hence no tunes.
This (transferring the files from computer to computer) was done using the instructions found here.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Don't know if that works for the shuffle, though.
