Transfering MOV files to ipod

I have a movie that I made myself and exported it as a .MOV file. I've imported it into iTunes. But when I click and drag it to my iPod, it says it "cannot be played on this iPod"
So can anyone offer a suggestion?

Just for safe measures I'd convert it to mp4. Also, tell iTunes to automatically update all vids and such. So convert the file before moving it to iTunes then import the file to the library of iTunes. Connect iPod, Automatically update.
Also, can you give any more details as to how you went about making this video, like software and your methods.

  • Can you use QT mov. files on ipod

is it possible to use quicktime mov. files on ipod, i have them in my itunes but am wondering if this is possible,
    thankyou

You seem to be confusing the file format (.mov) with its content (compression format). If the .mov file does not contain a format compatible with your iPod, then you must convert it to a compatible format. The specifics for this conversion depend on the specific format present in your source file, what system you are using, and the software you have available, are willing to download, or purchase.
For instance, let's say you have a .mov file which contains a "muxed" MPEG1 movie. If you have a Mac, you could use the free iSquint application to turn it into an iPod compatible movie. On the other hand, Windows users could use the free Videora iPod Converter to do the same thing.
Use your QT Player "Show Movie Info" window to determine in which format your source file is actually enconded and go from there.

  • Problem with transferring mp4 file to iPod Video

I used MediaFork to rip a DVD (that I own) to mp4. It looks great on my iMac and MacBook when running in QuickTime. I can import the file into iTunes.
I can play the file from within iTunes. However when I sync content to my iPod it does not show up!
When in QuickTime the following information is displayed in Movie Info.
    Format: h.264 Decoder 640 x 480, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 khz
    Data rate 1610.00 kbits/second
Every once in a while the Playing FPS changes to > 24 (like 24.10)
Is the data rate the problem??? Or what else could be the problem?
    Help!
This is from the Video IPOD video specifications.
    H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

The data rate you mention (1610) is over the published spec (1500), so I would guess that is indeed a problem.
Also, in MediaFork, did you set the encoder to the option marked for iPod?
If not, that could be a problem. Output from the encoder labeled MAIN won't work on an iPod.
    Settings I use succesfully –
    File format: MP4 file
Codecs: AVC/H.264 Video / AAC Audio
    Framerate: Same as source
    Encoder: x264 (h.264 iPod)
    2-pass encoding: yes
    Quality: Average Bitrate 1250
    Picture settings: 640 x XXX

  • Putting .mov files on iPod

Hi, I have a bunch of .mov files, some dating back a few years, and I would like to make them viewable on the iPod video. Currently iTunes tells me they are not in the right format but upon doing research I've discovered that .mov files should be compatible with iPod.
I have also learned that if I have Quicktime 7.0.3 installed on my computer any software with the "Quicktime Export Panel" will have the option to export to iPod. What software has this option? I can't seem to find any information on that.
Any tips, directions, on how to do this is very appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Holly

I have had that problem before. If you can see them in iTunes right click on the .mov file. In the window choose *Convert Selection for iPod*. That should allow them to be used on your iPod.

  • Playing .mov files on ipod mini (second generation)

Can anyone tell me if quick time (.mov) files will still play audio only on my ipod mini, or do i need to convert them to a different file type? If i do need to convert, how do I do that?

The mini does not support movie playback via the normal Apple firmware and software.
You can search for Linux and it may allow B&W movies to be played on the mini. However, this is not supported by Apple and could be voiding your warranty.

  • Transferring .mov files with H.264 codec to FCP

I am looking to purchase one of the Canon SLR cameras that offer video
    ( 5D mark 2 / 7D , etc ) and I understand that the .mov files they generate
( using the H 264 codec ) are not happily worked with in FCP.
Can anyone describe or go into what is then entailed in saving them in
a different format - one that is easily worked with in FCP ?
Is that a simple / quick step, or is it time intensive, etc. ?
Would really like to form a better understanding before purchase. I want the
camera primarily for its still image capability - so choosing another video
format ( better for file coding, etc. ) isn't so much an option.
Nonetheless, I would want to make use of the video features and am just
wondering whether it is a bit of an inconvenience, or a big fat pain in
    the @$$.
    Thanks for any help,
    Sterne

I've made a droplet that converts files from 30 fps to 29.97 and into ProRes 422.
    http://www.wallyandnay.net/Droplets/30-%3E29.97ProRes422.zip
I take my files, drop them on the droplet, go watch TV while they convert, then edit in FCP. Is it quick? No, but you can have only two of the following things
No transcoding, amazing quality, cheap price.
    Put up with the transcoding.

  • Transferring iTunes file settings & iPod to iMac 27" - easy or impossible?

Hi, I'm just about to buy the iMac 27" and I have only one concern about moving off my last PC...but it's a big one!
I have over 100 playlists - lovingly created over many years - and over 150GB of music, books and podcasts on iTunes and the associated iPod. I also have an iPOd Touch which uses some of the playlists but has lots of applications!
Is it possible / easy / impossible / very hard to transfer iTunes files and settings exactly as they are on my PC to the new iMac. If I can do this successfully, I presume that the iPod conversion will happen the first time I sync the device...or does this have to be done separately?
Thanks a million for any help!
    Sham-one

If you use the default settings, everything used by iTunes is stored in the iTunes folder. On a Windows PC, it is here
    \Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
On a Mac, it is here
    /Users/<username>/Music/iTunes/
So what you need to do is copy that entire iTunes folder from the Windows PC to a large enough external hard drive. Then connect that external hard drive to a Mac. When iTunes is NOT running, replace the existing iTunes folder on the Mac with the one from the Windows PC. You can either rename the existing iTunes folder, move it to another location, or delete it. The idea is for your Windows PC iTunes folder to take the place of the existing iTunes folder. When you start iTunes on the Mac, it should use the iTunes library file you transferred and iTunes should look the same as on the Windows PC.
Instead of using an external drive, you can do the transfer of the iTunes folder using a network connection between the Windows PC and Mac.
If you changed your settings so that your music and other iTunes media files are not all stored in the Windows PC's iTunes folder, please post back. You can still do it this way, but there are some additional steps.
Note: If you have protected content from the iTunes Store, you will have to register the new Mac as one of your (up to) five computers authorized with your iTunes Store account. You can do so from the Store menu in iTunes. If you are no longer using your Windows PC, be sure to deauthorize it.

  • Can't move files from iPod to iTunes

    Hi all,
I have .mp3 files--completely free of any copyright restrictions--and itunes won't allow me to move them to my computer. I get the black 'do not enter' circle when I try to drag from iPod to a playlist on iTunes.
Can anyone help with this? Thanks,

  • Trying to export downloaded movie files to IPOD format

I recently purchased the ipod video and I am trying to add music videos and clips that I had downloaded onto my computer. I followed the steps given on the quicktime website. I open up Quicktime 7Pro > file > open file > click on the movie clip i want > file > export > set it to "movie to ipod (320 x 240)". It converts but when I try to play the movies all I get is a white screen. Some have the correct sound but some, the sound comes all distorted. I wen to the FAQ but it didn;t help. it just told me to download codecs but didn't tell me what or where to download. Could you please help me? Also some movies I have been able to convert comes w/ no sound because its is MUXED or something like that. Is there anyway I can fix that too?
    Thank you

QT will not convert the sound from mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 files. They are muxed, meaning the sound and video are both contained in a single track. In other files types the sound and video are in separate tracks. QT Mpeg Limitations
For the muxed files you can try this freeware that does export both sound and video from mpegs. It has a setting to export to mpeg-4 video, which should play on your iPod. The site offers both Mac and Windows XP versions of the freeware. Mpeg StreamClip
I don't know why you get the white screen for some of the movies. That usually means the video is encoded with a compression method you don't have. What I don't understand is how you could have encoded it and not have the decompressor. You can find the name of the missing codec by opening in the Player and using Show Movie Info in the Windows menu. Perhaps someone here will be able to help you find the right decompressor for those..

  • Help! Old computer HD failed and need to move files on IPOD to new comptuer

Does anyone know how to do this? I just got a new computer and i'd like to move the music from my ipod to the new computer, but the itunes is not allowing me to do this. Is there anyway to accomplish this? I cant access the old computer since this HD is dead. I'm not very technically inclined, so step by step instructions would be super helpful. THANKS SO MUCH

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved also it was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described. Also it won't transfer playlists or videos as far as I know. However if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. Relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Keeping movie files on iPod after moving them to external HD

I'm running out of disk space on my Powerbook's hard drive because of all my television show files and I want to transfer them to my portable harddrive to free up the space. But if I do this, I'm worried that the files will disappear from my iPod and I don't want that to happen. Is there a way I can delete files on iTunes but keep them on my iPod even while continuing to update the folders they are in (television shows, movies, Limewire, etc.)? Thanks!

Only by manually managing the updating. If you have the external why not just locate the iTunes library there? You have the iPod for portability you don't need the library on the Powerbook.

  • Transferring movies to my iPod classic

I have 2 movies that I rented or bought from the iTunes store, but I can't seem to transfer them to my iPod classic. Isn't it just drag and drop?
    Thanks, Carol

I think I've found the problem here and its solution:
I use Handbrake 0.9.5 (mostly) to re-encode avi movies (and the like) for transfer to my Classic.  When I launch that application, the default translation preset is "Regular/Normal."  And therein lies the problem, for "Regular" most certainly does not work on the iPod Classic!  It does for my MacBook Pro, to be sure, but NOT for my old iPod.
However, the moment I select "Apple/iPod" as the preferred encoding preset, a check mark immediately appears in the small "iPod 5G Support" box . . . which is NOT checked when "Regular/Normal" is the default.  Eureka!
Now I have no problems moving movies to my Classic.  Nobody's at fault here . . . I just had to look a little closer at the available options.

  • Problem transferring MOV files from SD card

I have HD video on SDHC cards recorded on the new JVC GY-HM100U. This camera records in a native final cut pro codec that can drag and drop to a hard drive for editing.
My problem is that I am having an inconsistent experience getting the files from the SD cards to my hard drives. I generally transfer via my express slot with a card reader. Sometimes it works great and other times, my laptop dismounts the drive and I get the following error...
"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in " " could not be read or written (error code -36)."
I have also used a USB card reader with my desktop and that usually works fine as a workaround, but not today. There seems to be no common denominator when the problem occurs.
Anybody know what my problem is?
    thanks,
    mvw

Sorry, I did not see some of these responses until now. Unfortunately, I have not used the new camera since these problems. I actually got a new camera to replace the original. I spoke with a guy at JVC regarding some imaging issues I was having and he assured me they were not normal, so I got a new unit.
Aside from the issues I've had, I find the functionality and the performance of the camera to be excellent. looking forward to putting it through more paces.
