Transfering music from an iPod to a computer and more

All of the music that I have on my computer, I have transfered to my iPod Video. I am going to reboot my computer, which includes deleting all of the music. I would love to have it on my computer though, so I wonder if it's possible for me to "extract" the music from my iPod and put it on my computer hard drive.
I also wonder how I should do so that iTunes doesn't update my iPod when the iTunes library is empty. That would mean that iTunes would delete all of the music from my iPod. I know that I can modify the settings so that I must update my iPod manually, but to change the settings I must connect my iPod, and if I do, the empty iTunes starts deleteing the music of the iPod. Well, you get the picture. I need to modify the settings without connecting my iPod. Or is there a way to abort the update before iTunes has begun deleting my music? Anyway, please help me!

Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod to iTunes.

First, I am not well versed when it comes to computers, with that being said I need help. I was trying to figure out how to get my music from my ipod onto my computer and somehow all my music on my ipod is gone and none of it made it to my computer.

It is now gone. If it was not iTunes purchased music you will have to get your CDs out and rerip them on the new computer. You have to use 3rd party software to copy non-iTunes music from an iPod to a computer, such as Yamipod.

Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay:

What computer OS are you using? Do you have the latest version of iTunes (v11.1)? There has got to be a reason for the disconnect in the music syncing. I would recommend resetting the sync history. If you are in Windows, go to Edit, Preferences, Devices, and there is a button there. Now, with the phone connected to iTunes and the phone selected in the Device pane, you go to the Summary page and down towards the bottom of the page, there is a Reset Warnings box. After doing that, try to sync music again. If there is a problem, with the warnings reset, it should show up if there is one.

When you purchase music, you do not purchase the right to distribute that music to others.

There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

If your iPod can be read by the computer, read on.

For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
