Transfering music via firewire

My daugher has all her music on an eMac. She just got a macbook. We've transfered all personal data over using the utilities and firewire. I thought it would transfer music files over also? It hasn't. Can anyone help me with the best way to transfer the music files over without having to copy on a cd first.
What step did I miss?
Thank you

Thank you for the reply. I did use the TDM the first time. I was successful in transfering things such as settings on her computer. What didn't transfer over and i can't figure out how to get transfered over is her music and pictures. This didn't come over in the transfer. I believed I followed all the proper steps as the TDM was pretty clear how to transfer. Is there other steps I need to take with TDM to get pictures and music to transfer
Thanks

  • Dead screen, transfering documents via firewire - need help

    Greetings,
So I've got a 1 Ghz iMac (floating pivot screen.) - my primary mission critical workstation. My screen died today. Grrrr.
No time to muck about, I went out and purchased a mac mini (1.5 Ghz single intel core), I want to transfer all data from the old box to the new asap.
The migration assistant that appears at first boot up is cool, and I was able to move all applications. (handy!)
Problem is that I couldn't move all my user documents because the old Mac's drive is 80 gig and the new is only 60. So I figured I would just drag and drop as much as I can manually.
I've gone and reattached the old mac to the new via firewire and booted up the old box as an external drive. Problem is, when I open up the user folder on the old hard drive I'm not seeing any files.... ie. all folders including the old desktop folder are empty....its like the files are hidden or something.
    Help please.

could it be because under ownership and permissions I have no access to these folders? Is that why the folders "appear" empty? - then my next question would be, how can I give myself access to them?
Remembering that I am unable to boot up and use the old iMac (except in external drive mode) since the screen (or video card???) is dead.
Also - I'm attempting spotlight searches from the new mac on the old mac's HD for known files on the old mac's desktop and its coming back with nothing...
    What a mess ....maybe

  • Transfering music via ipod from computer

I'm transfering my music from my old computer to my new one. I've followed the steps on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173 but now both computers say my ipod nano is associated with another computer. And my music transferred to my new computer but when I open itunes with my ipod connected it is under SHARED not DEVICES and where my ipod is listed. help please.

The song is not saved in your computer hardrive, so itunes cant find the file. One thing you can try is using IpodCopy
It takes your music from your ipod and puts it onto your computer. Download this software into your new computer and try it out. I've never actually used this so dont ask me about problems that u may have. To be safe, put your ipod in manual update before you try it.

  • New computer, transfered music via external hard drive, library there but music wont play, message "The song "    " could not be used because the original file could not be found. Tech did everything, said call  Itunes support

    New Computer
transfered Itunes library via clickfree backup. New computer Tech support(Premier PC) did this, Now can not play library within Itunes. Message says "The song " song name " could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Same Tech tried different things via on line support could not fix and said call itunes support and say Itunes will not play on new computer.

I was given the option to locate the file where the song is held. If so select "locate" and direct it to the folder / file where the song is and open it. itunes then will give you the option to use this process to update all of your library. OK that as this will do it automatically instead of doing them one by one. I hope this helps.

  • Transferring music via ipod

My harddrive crashed and I lost everything. I now want to transfer the music from my ipod to my new laptop. How do I do this?

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Transferring data via firewire connection

I inherited an old iMac Power PC (dome base) that I need to extract some files from before disposing of it. It's been diagnosed with a bad motherboard and will need a replacement CD drive which is more than it's probably worth. I want to use my 24 iMac 7.1, intel core duo to transfer files residing on this older iMac Power PC that can only be started in target user mode. I assume the iMac 24 has a fire wire port, but besides the fire wire cord, how to I hook the 2 together to extract the files and then zeroize the hard drive on the older iMac?
    Thanks,

Once they're connected, copy the files off and then use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the drive.

  • Transferring files from MacBook Pro to new iMac via Firewire

    Hi guys
My MacBook Pro is seriously on its way out and I would like to transfer my music files, work documents, photographs, videos etc. onto my brand new iMac and the best way to do this I would think would be to link the two up via Firewire. The MacBook Pro is no longer accepting my external hard drive and fails during during DVD's, so those options are out.
So I was wondering if someone could advise me on what type of Firewire cable to get. As far as I'm aware I didn't get one with either the MacBook Pro or the new iMac, so I think a purchase is necessary however, I've spotted that there are different kinds with different ends, some which have 6-pin, 8-pin and 9-pin and I have no idea what to get. Could someone advise me on what would be the best item to get for this situation?
My MacBook Pro is one that was the model before the black keyboards came back in, and the iMac is the brand new one at 21".
    Thanks for your help guys.
    Steve.

    Hi
FireWire 800 / FW800 / IEEE 1394b uses a 9-pin connector for both the imac and the macbook pro.
    good luck.

  • Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Todd
Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

  • Transferring clips from avid to fcp via firewire

a bit off the wall question ... but is it possible to transfer clips from my avid media composer adrenaline (pc) to my fcp via firewire using the capture tool. the clips are dvcpro hd on the avid. it is easy to output the clips or sequences to tape (panasonic aj-hd1200 or 1400) via firewire so my plan is to "simply" substitute fcp for a deck and capture the clips free running into fcp. theoretically it seems to me that it should work. i set the device to non-controllable and capture settings to dvcpro hd 720p 60 to match the output from the avid. one problem is that when i connect the firewire cable from the pc to the mac, on the pc new hardware found message pops up and i have no way of telling windows what the device is. anyway have any experience or any ideas. thanks.

I doubt very much that your plan will work.
Why not just set up file sharing on the PC and pull the files onto the Mac using Finder?
That way you will retain the embedded data in the files.
Then you will probably need the QuickTime codecs from Avid too. (I don't have a link, maybe someone else will post it)
All in all, it might be better just to recapture directly into FCP from the original tapes.

  • IMac to new iMac via Firewire---Hung up at 34 minutes for 8 hours

I have a 2007 iMac connected to my new 27" iMac via Firewire 800->400 cable. It seems to have gone fine, for awhile. Now it's stuck at 34 minutes remaining for over 8 hours.
Do I let it keep going?
If not, how do I stop it and start over? Won't the new machine have some of the files already transferred? I'd like to start clean again.
    Please help! Missing work here.....
    Steve

It's possible one of the Macs went to sleep.
It's also possible there's a problem on the old Mac's internal HD. Verify it, per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
Do you have either Time Machine or "clone" backups of the old Mac, on an external HD? If so, it's a bit easier to plug that in to the new one and transfer from it. Start with the "Second Chance" in the green box of [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • What is the best way to record a project to an external recorded via firewire. Also, who makes a recorder that works with a mac?

What is the best way to record a project from the timeline to an external recorder via firewire? Also, who makes a recorder that works with a mac and recordes in realtime? This is possible right?

While theoretically possible, sometimes the camera people disable recording back to tape from the computer due to DRM (digital rights managment) issues. They will allow tape to tape transfers however.
Test your process first is all I can advise.

  • Migration Assistant not recognizing other Mac via FireWire

I am trying to transfer files from my G4 Mirror Doors Power Mac to my new Intel iMac via the instructions that come up on the new iMac. I am running the latest version of 10.4 on the G4.
I have the two machines connected via FireWire. I restarted the G4 holding the "T" key down and sure enough, the floating "FireWire" icon comes up but shortly after that, the new iMac says, "There are no versions of OS X on the older machine" which is obviously not true.
I tried the Ethernet route and loaded the Install Disk from the iMac into the G4 as instructed but that disk did not recognize either of my 2 internal drives as valid for installation.
    Any suggestions?

FWIW, I have had no problems using Migration Assistant or understanding its prompts, at least when using the version included in the recent Migration and DVD and CD Sharing Update. In this version or later, every option has both a title & descriptive info below it & there are no places I can see in which everything is called a document. You may want to check your MA version number & make sure it is version 1.2.3 or later, as described in About the Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update. This may help avoid any confusion you have had.
However, keep in mind that MA is designed to migrate files from one backup or startup disk at a time. It will transfer items from one home folder on a connected drive to the corresponding one on the new drive but these items must be enclosed in a home folder (in /Users/) on that drive. If you have elected to store these items on a non-startup drive lacking that hierarchy, you must import them using some other method & decide where to put them on the new drive. MA cannot make that decision for you.
Moreover, if you tell MA to import only your "Documents" folder, it will not import such items as your Movies, Music, Pictures, or other home folders, so for example your ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library file will not be imported, nor will be your ~/Music/iTunes folder (which contains your iTunes database files, even if the iTunes Music folder containing all your music files is stored elsewhere).
Without knowing exactly how you have 'piecemealed' other files & folders into your new drive, I do not know what to tell you to do to best complete the migration process. If you can supply more info about that, & about where exactly the original files & folders are stored on the older Mac, perhaps I or someone else can give you more useful info about doing that.
