Transfering my library from my iPhone to my formatted computer

Hey all,
I just had a serious computer problem and needed to format (I upgraded to windows 7 at the same time) all my music and applications were saved to my iPhone. I have my computer back and I'm wondering how to get the music back off my iPhone and onto my computer. if I try to sync from itunes it wants to erase everything. even though it should be the same library.

Welcome to AD!
It's not the same itunes library database file, is what that message means.
iTunes Library.itl, which got erased during the format.
You can use the Transfer Purchases feature Neil mentioned.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
Or get a 3rd-party ipod manager that supports iPhone to get everything back., not just purchases.

Another user posted they were happy with a program called "Mobile Sync Browser" that also got back all their app data.

  • I recently had to do a complete system restore how do i transfer my itunes library from my iphone back onto my computer

I recently had to do a complete system restore on my computer. How do i transfer the itunes content from my iphone back onto my computer?

    You don't.
The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases.
The iphone is not a backup device.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a  backup copy of your computer. Certainly you did not restore your system without making sure that your backup copy was up to date.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good) then you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • My old computer crashed, i have a new computer, is there anyway to transfer the itunes library from my iphone to my new computer?

Help! My old computer crashed, and I have a bunch of music that I don't have on cd any longer, is there anyway to move the library I have on my iPhone now to my new computer I just bought?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music and contents, you may have to use a third party software to copy over. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • I transfered my purchases from my iphone to my mac. All transfers completed. One particular album shows up on the phone but the songs are greyed out and don't play. Itunes shows album as purchased but album is not in my Mac library.

I transfered my purchases from my iphone to my mac. All transfers completed. One particular album shows up on the phone but the songs are greyed out and don't play. Itunes store shows album as purchased but album does not show up in my Mac library. How can I retrieve the album.

So i've found the answer to this by clicking on every menu and setting in the itunes store. It turns out some purchases in the cloud can be hidden probably as the result of an interrupted transfer/sync/backup or a network outage. To unhide purchases 'greyed out ' items , go to the Itunes store (on the PC) click on your account name and select view account. (you'll be prompted for your itunes password) once you are in scroll down to the purchase history section. there should be an option for hidden purchases. click through and click on unhide purchases, redownloadble purchases. any hidden purchases will then show up. click on unhide to reactivate and download. This may only work for purchases in the cloud.
    hope others find this useful.

  • I want to buy a ipod as my iphone as no memory from all of my music, is there a way of transferring the music from the iphone to the ipod? i dont want to have to re download or buy all of the music again!

i want to buy a ipod as my iphone as no memory from all of my music, is there a way of transferring the music from the iphone to the ipod? i dont want to have to re download or buy all of the music again! Don't want to buy a ipod then find out this! Please help!

You can redownload most iTunes purchases directly to the iPod by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise you will have to sync from your iTunes library.

  • I transferred itunes library from old PC to new PC. The content all shows when I launch iTunes on the new PC now. The previous content does not show in iTunes but folder still looks like it is on hard drive on new PC. Suggestions on how to properly merge?

Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
To get all your content off your connect your iPad to your new computer.
Then use a 3rd party piece of software to transfer your content
I have found Senuti useful but there are others listed in the article I linked to in a previous post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
That will let you transfer your non purchased content
For Purchased content log in to iTunes on the new computer
In Itunes Store click on Purchased under the Quick Links section on the right.
Download any music by clicking on the cloud button

  • Can I restore a previous library from my iPhone?

So.. I am on the verge of tears right now, I think I just lost over 1000 songs that I had on my phone..
I'm selling my old iPhone, so I backed it up and restored everything on the new one, but for some reason only 1 artist is in my library now. I went on my mac to transfer the full library from my old phone (which I had not wiped yet) and when doing so, iTunes overrode my library - I did not click anything that would give it permission to do so.
So now the library on both phones is the same.. only 1 artist, and I can't find the old phone's full library anywhere on the mac.
Is there any way to extract the previous library from the iPhone? I know you can do it on the mac itself, so there must be a way to do it on the phone too..
Oh please, oh please.. someone save my day!!

Backing up a phone doesn't include media.  You can transfer iTunes Store purchases.
iTunes: About iOS backups - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946 - including a list of what is backed up.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
iTunes Store purchases can likely be re-downloaded directly to the new phone and/or the computer.  Other media can only be transferred one way, computer to phone. iDevices are not intended to be the source for media.  That is the job of iTunes on the computer.  If you buy a new phone you can "restore" it from a backup then sync with the old library on the computer.  If you attach a phone to a computer and that phone was synced with a different iTunes library previously it will offer to wipe the phone.  There is a warning message this will happen.
Do you have one song purchased from Apple?  It is possible if you only have one and it is automatically being downloaded to all your devices that would explain the one track.  The rest of your music should be in your iTunes library on the computer.  If it isn't then you will have to buy third party software to see what you can rescue.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Transferring iTunes Library from another PC

My wife and I have an iPhone each with our individual music collection on each. My music library is on my Macbook Air but my wife's is on an Acer laptop that has now broken so she is unable to add any new CD's she purchased to her library, I've tried logging into my Mac as a new user and using a different iTunes but it gives a message that all existing content will be wiped off the phone as it is a new library.
Please can someone help me with a solution as want to avoid having the Acer repaired?

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.  Media ripped from a CD cannot be transferred this way.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Make sure you buy a backup drive.  Some day it will be your Mac with both your accounts that will not start and then both of you will be unhappy.

  • I want to sync my music library from my iPhone 4 to my mac air.

I am trying to sync my music from my desktop at work to my Mac Airbook. What's the simplest way to do it until the cloud is available?

    1) ensure iTunes on the MBA is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in the MBA's library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

If you have copied them to your computer, then you will be OK.  Just deselect the photos when you sync.

  • How to transfer an iTunes library from an iPhone to a new Macbook Air

I just received a new macbook air and I would like to transfer the music from my iPhone to my new laptop. My old laptop that contained my itunes library is dead so I don't know how to get the music from my iPhone onto my new computer.

Is the music you want on your new Mac all purchased music via iTunes?
If so, then you can log into the iTunes Store on your Mac, and then on the right side, click on Purchased under Quick Links. Then click on All Songs, and Not on This Computer. You will see all of your purchased iTunes music listed with a little cloud next to each song. You can download songs individually, or go to the bottom and click on Download All.
    Cheers,
