Transfering my mail to new Macbook?

I am ugrading to a Macbook from an iBook and I wanted to know if there is a file somewhere that contains all of my mail on my iBook (tiger) that I could copy to my new Macbook. Would be nice to still have access to my old email.
Thanks
F

first, you can use Migartion Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) to migrate all your user data (not just Mail). Migration Assistant also gives you an option to migrate applications but you should not do that since you are moving from a PPC mac to an intel one. If you want to migrate Mail ONLY,
copy the entire directory /Users/user/library/mail and the file /users/user/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the corresponding locations on the new computer. If those items already exist at the destination, delete them first. start Mail and it will look as it did on the old computer.

  • Partial Transfer of Mail to new MacBook

    Hi all--
Used Migration Assistant last night to get most of my info from my old dual USB iBook to my new MacBook Pro. It came across, but none of the mail that I had in my three inboxes came with it. I need to get that mail. What files do you need grab to get my mail back in the inboxes.
    Does that make any sense?
The old iBook was/is running OS 10.3.8--I think it is .8.
Thanks for any and all help!

    Hi Paul.
I'm not familiarized with Migration Assistant, so I don't know what could have gone wrong with it, if anything. I do know, however, that the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.0 is broken and it fails quite often. You may want to take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
What should be transferred from the old system to the new one are the HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file, where most preferences and all account settings are stored, and the HOME/Library/Mail folder, where all mailboxes and the messages themselves that Mail keeps locally are saved, together with other supporting files.
You should not do anything with the mail that's on the server. If you transfer all the local mail settings and data (i.e. the preferences file and the Mail folder) properly from the old system to the new one, Mail will find again any mail that's on the server. Actually, that's precisely the reason IMAP-type accounts exist, so that you don't have to transfer your mail from computer to computer in order to be able to access it from different computers.
Have you already started using Mail on the new system despite the failed conversion? Is there anything you've sent or received on the new system that you wish to preserve and that's not on the server anymore? I ask because the easiest way to solve this problem would be to tidy up your mailboxes in the old system first, as described in the thread I provided above, and then copy HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and HOME/Library/Mail to the new system.
How many accounts do you have and what type (POP, IMAP, .Mac) are they?

  • After I've Transferred Powerbook G4 to new MacBook Pro via Firewire...

    Hello:
I've used my Powerbook G4 (Tiger OS) for years and recently upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 4. Since my Powerbook couldn't support the OS I need to sync my iPhone 4, I purchased a new Macbook Pro and transferred all of my files over from my Powerbook. The transfer completed successfully, and I do have my applications showing up on my MBP- however, my iTunes on the MBP is still showing up completely blank. I've tried "dragging" the iTunes folder over from my still connected Powerbook HD (in target mode), but it's not working. Now, I was able to switch to my Powerbook user account from my MBP (the screen turns around like a "box") and found everything on there- my iTunes, Apps, even my dock is setup the same. From here I could sync my iPhone 4 with my iTunes (everything except my apps synced though....but I'll save that for another forum). My question is how to I combine these users so I don't have to switch back and forth to view and access my iTunes?? Any help is greatly appreciated--thank you!!
    -Stephanie

400 to 800. Look at the iBook port and look at the MBP port. You could also copy the iPhoto Library onto a USB depending upon the size or burn a DVD depending upon the size. Mentioned because afterward you may not have any need for that $30 cable but a USB flash drive is very useable afterward.

  • Is it possible to retrieve a registration key for a hard copy of iWork 06? Moved and cannot locate disc, and replaced the computer it was originally installed on. When I transferred the program to new Macbook, the reg key apparently didn't transfer.

Is it possible to retrieve a registration key for a hard copy of iWork 06? Moved and cannot locate disc, and replaced the computer it was originally installed on. When I transferred the iWork from original Macbook Pro to new Macbook Pro, the reg key apparently didn't transfer. Any ideas?

Do you still have access to the old MacBook Pro? If so, you can transfer the license by copying the com.apple.iwork.plist from Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences to the same location on the new Mac. Note that this IS the main HD Library, not your user library. I have found that these files are not moved during setup or migration.
Are you really running Tiger 10.4.7? If so, you should update to 10.4.11. You can find the updater here. You also might consider buying the retail disk of iWork '09 from a third-party such as Amazon.com or eBay. It will add a lot of features for you. iWork '09 does require Tiger 10.4.11 at a minimum.

  • In transferring data to a new Macbook Pro it seems to have stopped making progress.

In transferring data to a a new MacBook Pro from a MacBook using migration assistant, the progress seems to have stopped (for about 3 hours) and still shows 2 hours and 16 minutes remaining. The blue progress bar looks active but hasn't moved in the last 3 hours.

There might be a problem with the directory on the old Mac.  Try verifying the old Mac's internal HD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
Another option would be to transfer from Time Machine or "bootable clone" backups of the old Mac on an external HD.
In either event, you'll want to start over.  See the green box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for instructions.

You will need a Firewire 800 cable which can be procured at Apple, Best buy or online at OWC or Newegg.  Also read the attached link for procedures in transferring you data:

  • Tiny font on Menu Bar & on window when using Apple Mail on new Macbook Air

I have a new MacBook Air and all is good - except my Mail window has tiny fonts, including on the tool bar, and the Menu Bar is also has smaller fonts when Mail is active. I have made the actual messages readable but the rest of the screen is almost too small to read.

I just got my new MacBook Air and I was also really, really disappointed that the menu bar fonts - and all default text sizes in general - are much too small. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the optimal resolution for the monitor is now 1440x900 instead of 1280x800 as it was in the older MacBook Air models. I guess I just have to go to the optician and get myself a pair of glasses...
But I think this is clearly a design -related problem that Apple should fix asap!

  • Error 6 - Transferring Photoshop CS4 to new macbook pro

I'm in the process of changing transferring everything over to my new Macbook Pro. I uninstalled photoshop CS4 on my old laptop but when I tried to install it on this laptop a box popped up saying I needed a certain Java application (can't remember which) which it searched for and downloaded for me but after it finished and I clicked to install CS4 it said that my computer needed to be restarted and if that didn't solve the problem to contact support and let them know I have an error 6.  Hoping someone can help me out. Thank you in advance!!

  • Transferring stuff to my New Macbook Pro

I just recently bought a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHZ 2 GB Ram 15" and I had a question about transferring stuff to my new computer. Such as Safari tabbing through everything, Front row being choppy with videos and MS word and excel documents not being read.
I used to have an iMac G5 17" 1.9 GHZ and there were several problems with it's software. Now that I've transferred all my stuff to my Macbook Pro, I'm worried that the problems that plagued my iMac followed and that my computer will run slow despite having 2 GB or RAM.
I'm not too sure what I should do. Should I keep my MBP the way that it is now and keep all the transferred items on it? Or should I reinstall the OS with the disks that came with it and just transfer over my music and my applications via the iPod and reinstall?
    Thanks in advance!

Apart from potential stability and performance issues, one big problem I have with the Migration Assistant is that one is really not to know exactly how well their new system is supposed to perform. While sure, using the MA can be far quicker and more convenient although there's a lot to be said for know exactly how your system is "supposed" to perform. By clean installing all of your software and manually transitioning one's data you get that.
If you go to the Xbench results page and look at the wild variance in system performance for any one model you'll see there are swathes of users out there that have no idea their systems are under-performing.

  • Transfering iwork 09 to new macbook pro??

    Good morning all,
I am purchasing a new macbook pro and wanted to know if it possible to transfer my iwork09 software to my new macbook pro? I am currently using a macbook and OSX 10.6.2

I am wanting to sell my current macbook after I buy a new macbook pro and keep hold of the single licence of iwork I have purchased last year as a download from apple.com.
Keep in mind that you should remove iWork from the MacBook you're selling if you aren't including the original disks. Preferably, wipe the machine clean and reinstall the system from the gray disk that came with the MacBook, then include that gray disk when you sell the machine.
So you think Migration assistant will transfer the software over to my new macbook pro?
It should, but you could also reinstall from your original iWork disk instead.

  • Transfering from G5 to new MacBook

This week I bought a new MacBook. I travel for a living and wanted to bring my computer on the road and so I hooked up the MacBook to the G5 and got all the info and settings from my G5. Worked very sweet.
Now I want to update the MacBook with any new items on the G5.
    How do I do that?
    Thanks.
    Hobie

If you want to keep both computers synced, I would suggest getting SuperDuper! You can do "Smart Updates" with it.

  • Transferring from old to new Macbook

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and have my harddrive from my last macbook backed up on a G drive Slim.  How do I get my Adobe products from the hard drive to my new Mackbook?  Thanks!

You don't. All Adobe products must be properly installed or else the activation system won't work. Install it using your original DVD/ download, use the trials or use the downloads from here:

  • Transfering music to my new macbook...??

    Hello,
I know that there is some way to find an old discussion to answer my question, but I couldnt figure out how to do that. So here it goes: I just bought a new macbook (white 13") and I am leaving for college soon and I want to transfer all my music onto my macbook from my old imac G5. I was wondering what the fastest way to do this is? Any help would be great...
    -Gus

    Hello,
The easiest way to transfer your music to your MacBook would be through FireWire Target Disk Mode. What this does is turn your iMac into an extrernal hard disk for the MacBook. Thus, you can drag and drop your music to your MacBook from the iMac. Read this article to find out how to use this feature:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583 .
Post back with any questions that you have. Hope this helps.

  • Transferred files to a new MacBook Pro, but I don't see my old iPhoto library!!

I recently transferred all my files from my 2008 MacBook Pro 15" to my new 2010 MacBook Pro 15" (with a firewire).  As far as I can see everything has transferred, except for my iPhoto library.  When I tried to look for a photo it was completely blank and iPhoto asked if I wanted to create a new library.  I also have a Time Capsule which all my files from my 2008 MBP should be backed up on, but I can not find them!!  I'm seriously going to cry if I lost the last 5 years of my photos and videos!!  PLEASE HELP!!
    THANK YOU!!

Download and use  Find Any File   to search for a file named "Library6.iPhoto". It's a file that exists in every iPhoto library regardless of what the library has been named. If you find more than one you can open them to see if the other library has your photos.
If there is only one library make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
