Transfering only playlists to iPod Mini

I have iTunes on a iBook G4 with more songs than my iPod mini can hold. Is there a way to just trasfer the play lists and not the whole library to the Mini?

You can change your update setting to "automatically update selected playlists only". You can create one or more playlists specifically for the Mini and select only those to update.
For info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Transferring Library from Old iPOD mini to new computer...

My computer was fried about a month ago. My company's IT department replaced it, but I lost my library of iTUNES entirely from the hard disk. The whole library is of course on my old iPOD mini. I want to transfer the library from the old iPOD mini to my new computer and then, in turn, to my new NANO - which I am very excited about. I have installed the nano and the iTUNEs on my new computer. I am fearful that if I plug my old iPOD mini into the new computer, with the blank library, that it will erase the iPOD mini library. HELP!

DO NOT attach & sync your full iPod to an empty iTunes!!!
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple Method: (just to recover the song files)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
    5 – Within iTunes: File=>Add Folder
6 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod
    7 - Click OK
8 - The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes
8a –- this will take some time depending on your PC and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

MY PLAYLIST ON MY IPOD MINI ONLY DISPLAYS THE ON-THE-GO FEATURE.IT NO LONGER SHOWS MY TOP RATED, RECENTLY ADDED AND ALL THE OTHER TITLES UNDER THE PLAYLIST MENU

Ericka, Welcome To The Apple Discussion Site.
If your iPod is Set to Automatic Sync. Then You should Not have any problem With Your Playlist... If they are Listed In the Source Panel On iTunes, and Check-Up, The Songs should be transfert and also playlists To your iPod.
Another Thing, Thank You for posting. But next Time, Post In the correct Folder.. It seems you Use Windows XP.. And You are Under " Connecting to Mac ". and It Should be Under " Connecting To Windows ".

  • Transferring songs from an iPod Mini

I have an iPod mini and used to have a PC. I recently bought a MacBook, and now have iTunes 8 on my MacBook. How do I transfer to the songs from my iPod mini and transfer them to my MacBook into iTunes?

What about iTunes purchases that you buy on your computer, I can not transfer any of those songs onto my daughters iPod that she gave me since she got an iPhone for Christmas and no longer uses her iPod. We reset it and erased all the data and now it will only transfer one song. Sorry for getting in on this thread, no one responded to mine when I asked the question.
    Thanks,

  • Transferring songs from my iPod mini to my PS3

How do I get all the song titles and info for the songs on my iPod mini to come up on my PS3? Can I download iTunes on my PS3? When I connected my iPod to the PS3 some song titles came up but the majority of them did not. A lot of other songs said unsupported data and I think those are the songs that I downloaded off iTunes. Thanks for help.

  • Unable to create a playlist on ipod mini 6gb

I bought a used ipod. When I'm in itunes and the ipod is highlighted, I click new playlist and it just adds the new playlist feature to my itunes library and not to the ipod itself. It seems I am unable to add a playlist to my ipod. Help, please.
    G4 cube   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

I think I can drag a playlist from my itunes library onto the ipod (blindly) and it will show up as a playlist on the ipod.
Any idea why I can't see the playlist on my ipod when the itunes app is open?
    Thanks.

  • Import ONLY Playlist from Ipod

Yes, I have searched and have not seen an answer.
Is there a way to copy a playlist from an iPod to iTunes? All the songs in the playlist cane from the iTunes library I want the playlist in. I have been manually updating the iPod as my collection is 80+ Gigs and have just found out that none of my play counts have been synching back to iTunes. I want to copy the playlist on my iPod back to iTunes and then synch to that playlist to get accurate playcounts.

There are a number of third party utilities you can use to retrieve the files and complete playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection:
    YamiPod
    PodUtil
    PodPlayer
    iPodAgent

  • Playing audio component of video podcasts on an iPod mini?

I subscribe to a number of lecture podcasts which somewhat uselessly record in video. I don't need to see the presenter, so I was wondering if there was a way to force it to play audio-only on my iPod mini. Currently, if I put it on a sync'ed playlist, it is ignored, and the conversion option says that the video is already in the correct format. Is there a workaround which doesn't involve the extra effort of taking the file out of iTunes and ripping the audio track?

  • Ipod mini wont turn on or respond

updated to the latest itunes, transferred some songs to ipod mini, properly disconnected an ipod through itunes, unplugged. about 15 minutes later wanted to listen to ipod but it would not turn on. the screen remained blank, tried plugging ipod back to pc, but the screen still stays off, doesn't even charge or anything. I tried reseting ipod without any luck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Emin,
    Are you resetting correctly?
Did you update iPod Updater to the latest version?
Have you tried to restore your iPod to factory settings?

  • Playing .mov files on ipod mini (second generation)

Can anyone tell me if quick time (.mov) files will still play audio only on my ipod mini, or do i need to convert them to a different file type? If i do need to convert, how do I do that?

The mini does not support movie playback via the normal Apple firmware and software.
You can search for Linux and it may allow B&W movies to be played on the mini. However, this is not supported by Apple and could be voiding your warranty.

  • IPod mini makes me want to kill myself!!

I've had my iPod mini for many months and never had a problem with it. My brother recieved the same iPod mini for his birthday so we're using two iPods on one computer. So today my brother plugged his iPod into my cord on the computer and later ejected it and left the cord alone. Then I plugged my iPod mini into the same cord and iTunes opened only showing my iPod mini as my brother's iPod mini. So not only are all of my songs deleted off of my iPod but my brother's songs are on my iPod now. AND I can't even listen to his songs that are now on my iPod. It just skips every single one. So ***!? I tried restarting the computer and it's still the same and I tried restarting the iPod mini and it's still the same. It still shows up on iTunes as my brother's iPod. So someone please help before I throw this piece of **** against the wall! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!1

Why is it a piece of c*ap simply because either you or your brother messed up?
Try restoring the iPod back to factory settings, and once you've done that simply transfer the songs you want from iTunes back to your iPod.

  • My ipod mini keeps resetting

Help!!! Ive only had my ipod mini for less than a year and its going nuts. At first the menu button wasnt functioning at all so i tried resetting it yesterday and when I woke up this morning the backlight was turning on and off and it was continually resetting itself. PLEASE HELP!

To put the iPod into forced disk mode, this is what you should be doing.
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
    Have you also seen this?
iPod shows only an Apple logo and doesn't start up.

  • How does iPod Mini store songs and playlists?

    Hi,
I am a new user of iPod Mini.
I have some music in my music library in iTunes and I have created a few playlists. Some songs are in multiple playlists. When I copy over these playlists, will these music files get copied over twice or only once?
I am worried that this will eat up space on my iPod and hence I am wondering whether to remove all dups in my playlists.
Can anyone please advise? I would expect that iPod dumps all song files at one place and the playlist is just a pointer to these various files. Can someone confirm if this is true?
    Thanks,
    SS

Welcome to the Apple Discussions, Suryanarayana!
Can someone confirm if this is true?
    Confirmed.
    Have a look at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/4.9/en/513.html
Although the article is about playlists in iTunes, it's applicable when they're transferred to the iPod.

  • How to have more than one playlist on the iPOD mini ...?

This may seem a silly question - after all, isn't it the whole point of the iPOD ? Anyway, with my current setup, I cannot get more than one playlist onto my ipod mini.
Using Win2000Pro, connecting using USB; there have been lots of other issues involving ' cannot read/write to ipod ' which have been reported on these forums , I started having problems after Apple 'upgraded' iTunes from 4.9 ...ended up with nothing on the ipod at all. Since then a few upgrades and now running iTunes 6.0 (not 6.0.1), it DOES sync with the ipod but does not let me manage the playlists:
Since my library is > the ipod ( 4 GB model) I cannot use the option ' sync all songs & playlists' , which is what I originally used when the library was < the ipod. At that point I did get ( automatically I think..) a few playlists onto the ipod.
Howeever, since the library got too big, I have to select 'sync to these playlists only' . I use 1 master list, which works, ( it syncs all the songs to the ipod and I get just that playlist on the 'pod) but any attempt to select another playlist from that dialogue box results in consistent hanging of iTunes, and you have to kikll it in task manager.
I would have thought that you could simply drag n drop a playlist onto the connected ipod icon (that would be more elegant) but the inteface doesn't allow it..
Oh and another thing ..why does the syncing tool delete ones on the go playlists from the pod ? I can't even get around this issue by making them manually on the 'pod as they get deleted when syncing.. Grrrrhhh
Where to go from here guys & gals ??
    Thanks...any tips gratefully received
Aries/ AMD Windows 2000 Draytek Wireless DSL 2 Mb

Ok I'll try that, although I did try it earlier when I had iTunes 5.xx loaded, I think.
As to size of playlists, I have a master (900 songs) that defines what will fit onto the ipod , I then generate all the others as subsets of the master (not of the library)- hence I know they will all fit
Can you also clarify something for me: the dialogue box we are discussing is intended, I think, so that one can set the automatic synching of certain playlists between the PC & the ipod. Is that the only way one can select other playlists to go to the ipod - i.e. as static once-offs, not synchronised ?
Apple' docs, I think, are poor in this regard - they assume most ipods are bigger then the users song library and they gloss over the details of this alternate mode of playlist synching.
    Thanks - Nick

  • IPod mini only plays MP3, no longer plays iTunes m4p files

I connected my friends Windows formated iPod mini (4gig) to my Mac so we could transfer a song she purchased through iTunes 6. Initially there was a dialog box that wanted to update the software on the iPod. Since she had never updated her iPod we didn't choose to do that. The iPod showed up in iTunes fine, and we then authorized the Mac with her account.we transferred the song. The song would play fine from the iPod mini through iTunes, but the minute we disconnected from the computer and tried to play through the iPod, it would skip all the protected m4p files and only play the MP3 files and regular AAC unprotected files. All the protected iTunes songs will no longer play. She has since updated her iPod with the latest software from her windows, and we have deauthorized the Mac, but still the same issues. We then reauthorized the iPod on the Mac and still nothing. Any ideas?

Upgrading to iTunes 6.0.1 fixes the problem. At least it did on my 3G Mac formated iPod. The mini is working as it should be we restored it to factory settings and got the basic functionality working again. iTunes 6.0.1 allows the 3G iPod to play my recently purchased music, previously puchased music and books, as well as all the other MP3 and non-purchased AAC encoded music. I'm glad I didn't have to restore the 3G 30 gig iPod since that would have been a lot of work.
    Thanks for the fix Apple!
