Transfering P2 footage without FCS or FCP

I will be shooting some HD footage on P2 cards. My problem is that I have ordered Final Cut Studio but will not receive it before I will need to clear out the P2 cards for another shoot. Is there a simple, free method of getting HD footage off a P2 card without using FCS or FCP? I'm using a MacBook Pro 2.6 duo intel processor with 4gb of memory.
Also, once I get Final Cut Studio will I need to search out and download additional drives or software to log and transfer P2 cards or can I just install FCS and be on my way?

You don't need FCP to offload the cards. Not at all. You need to copy the files off of the card, keeping the full card structure intact...put this onto a drive that will be your ARCHIVE DRIVE...this is in essence, your tape. Then you can erase the P2 card.
And then when you get FCP you can import the footage to work with.

Hey I just got off the phone after 2 hours with Apple care which offered no answers to this issue. My co worker is able to log and transfer without problem on his computer from my "Sony HDR CX12" AVCHD Full 1080. But both of my machines no go. I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!! Dropped frames for sure on logged and transfered AVCHD footage.
I called back Apple Care and they are attempted to recreate the same system set up as I had to verify that iLife 2009 is screwing up FCP 6.0.6
I've found some other work arounds if you are having this problem. Please let me know since my case is still open with Apple Care and I would like to be able to mention that others are having issue with this.

COMPLETELY wrong. That couldn't be more wrong. Quicktime is the basic engine of FCP...it captures all footage as QT files. Without QT FCP would not function. And of course it works with iMovie and iPhoto installed...those are basic Apple applications. I have those on all my machines that have FCP and have had zero issues. Well, the issues you have are NOT related to having those applications installed. That is silly talk.
Now...when you import AVCHD footage, you have the choice on what CODEC you can use when you import. Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or ProRes. AIC is nice and light, and can be played back on a firewire drive, but lack essential things like TIMECODE...and the quality isn't all that great. ProRes on the other hand is great quality and has timecode, but has a high data rate. A firewire 400 drive will not work...firewire 800 might, but raided firewire 800 like a G-Raid would be advisable. eSATA drives or internal SATA drives all the better.
iLife 09 is not screwing up FCP 6.0.6. I have iLife 09 and FCP 6.0.6 and have zero issues. most people do.

RED Camera footage is Jumpy in FCP

I am working off of an iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, with FCP version 6.0.4 (yes its older but I can't afford the newer version just yet). I downloaded the component from the red website in order to view the footage in quicktime and FCP, but its VERY jumpy and skips frames. I am also sourcing the footage from an external hard drive. Ive searched the internet and these forums for a solution to this but didn't find any helpful links. Does anyone know?

That's not entirely true - the fast RAID part - REDCode is highly compressed, so it isn't that demanding on disk bandwidth, however it is extremely CPU intensive. Which is where the stuttering comes from. Even on an 8 core system, without rendering, the CPU has to DeBayer and downcovert on the fly, 4K material to 1920x1080 - it's bound to skip a few frames now and then...

Help! Can't export DV matte footage without an unwanted background!

I have dv matte blast and it is pulling great keys, but I can't export as a .mov file without getting the background color that I set in properties. I can't find a transparent setting for the background in motion. I have also tried the roundtrip method and I am still getting background when I export to motion and retuen to FCP 5 and render keyed footage. I have FCP 5 crossgrade studio.
Anyone know a work around? Should I export as another file. I looked in all the threads and motion help manual and have come up empty.

unless you're using the animation codec with + colors selected, you're not exporting transparency.
rather than exporting a quicktime movie, you can place your motion project directly in the fcp timeline.

General workflow between FCS and FCP question....

Hey all.
I'm totally new to FCS, and while in a few hours I've figured out a lot about how it works, what is totally eluding me is how to establish an efficient work flow back and forth between FCS and FCP...it's really driving me crazy.
Yeah, I know, read the manual...but nothing I'm finding anywhere seems to be a really direct, straight-up description of how to get a FCP project up and running.
Specifically I am dealing with the whole "checking out" a project thing, creating proxies, etc., it just feels very awkward. The test project I'm working with has 1 (ONE!) clip (granted a 28GB HD clip)...but FCS is not allowing me to make a proxy into the cache, this is after I already took that clip into FCP, cut it, saved it, checked it back into FCS just to make sure I got the basics of flowing back and forth down.
I wish I could be more specific, but I really really really just want a basic explanation of how to use the FCS as, you know, a server.
Anyone who can point me in that direction is a GOD!

Importing footage from Panasonic GH2to FCP

Firstly, am I right in thinking that fooatge imported using iMovie will come into FCP and only be able to be used in a sequence with AIC?
I bought the GH2 a year ago and had trouble importing. I got a tech guy to help and he said just use iMovie. I have been using that all this time and only recently found out that the pro res 422 codec i imported footage with was never in use and that the AIC that I used has poor quality.
Do I need a plug in to import?
I'm using version 6.0.

You need to use something like Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert the footage to ProRes. FCP won't import it/convert it directly. AIC is a BAD codec. And you need to stay away from iMovie...your tech was way wrong.

Transfering dvd footage to FCP

Hi, Is it possible to transfer dvd footage into FCP for editing.

1. Download and install MPEG Streamclip
2. Open VTS011.VOB (and choose Open all files) in MPEG Streamclip
3. Set your in/out points (hit the letter "i" where you want the clip to start, and the letter "o" where you want the clip to stop)
4. Select the Edit menu and choose Trim
5. Choose File -> Export to QuickTime (select a video format suited for editing)
As others have already mentioned, this will not work on copy protected DVDs.

HD footage not visible in FCP 5

I'm using FCP 5 on a MBP. I captured some HD footage from a Sony Camera and transferred it from my Producer's MBP to my Portable HD. On my producer's MBP, the footage looked fine, but when I imported it into Final Cut, I have the audio but not the video (all I have is a black screen). I also have a red "need to render" but it refuses to render when I hit Option R. Can someone help me please?

If it is 5.0.4, it is incompatible with your hardware.

Converting DVD footage for use in FCP

I'm sure that this has been asked before, but I can't find it anywhere. Is it possible to take footage from a dvd and edit it in final cut? I have several old projects from my days in television on DVD that I need to use. How is this possible. Thanks in advance!

Search is your friend. Surely you jest about "can't find it anywhere". Just scan the posts for the last week or so. Also, read the FCP manual about what format can be edited within FCP.

Capturing footage without timecodes

I love editing with Final Cut Express, but capturing footage is a nightmare. The program keeps trying to locate timecode breaks on my Hi8 tape during capture, which results in me losing three to four seconds of footage from the beginning of each scene.
Is there a way to tell FCE to disregard timecodes? When I capture family movies, I'd like the importing to be as seamless as possible -- much like when capturing in iMovie. (I do know that I can capture in iMovie and edit in FCE, but if it's possible, I'd like to do all my work in FCE without relying on iMovie.)

Editing footage from DVD in FCP

Here's my issue. A client has a 2 hour presentation on DVD, which they want to edit down to a 90 minute piece. This shorter piece will end up being on a looping DVD. The footage on the original DVD is 16x9 and they want to keep it that way for use on large widescreen monitors. What is the easiest way to get the footage into FCP? The clips to capture will be long, about 30 minutes, do I capture it playing from a DVD player? Do I use a "DVD Ripper"? I have no experience using that type of software.

MPEG Streamclip is what you need to convert the client's DVD to an editable format. The problem is that the video on DVDs is very highly compressed. If you take it, edit it and then recompress it back to a DVD there will be a noticeable loss in quality. Talk to your client and get an uncompressed version of their video (not a DVD).

My footage looks posterized in FCP playback

im using FCP 7 and have downloaded all the latest software updates.
my footage looks normal when i play it back on my video camera, it's normal when i watch it on quicktime, and even when i export it as a quicktime from FCP. it's also normal when capturing to my computer using the 'log and transfer' window. but when i play/preview the clips from the timeline or directly from the browser window, the footage looks distorted and posterized.
ive tried talking to apple support, ive re-loaded the program, ive tried the program with a different user account, ive trashed preferences and reloaded again... but the footage still looks posterized on FCP.
when i change the view settings, the footage looks normal on the R channel, the G channel and B channel, and even on the RGB + alpha channel, but when i view it using the RGB channel, it looks posterized, making it quite difficult to edit and colour-grade.
any suggestions on how i can fix this problem?

ok, so i dont know what i did. but after checking my colour settings in my system preferences (which i didnt change), FCP has decided to magically work! the footage is playing back normally now. yay!
i really dont know what i did to fix this problem, but it all appears to be fine now. thanks for your help!
