Transfering photo library from old iMac to new iMac

I just got a new 24" iMac and want to transfer my photo library (~2000 photos) from my older iMac. Is there an easy way for me to do this which will keep all my photos still organized in albums? Or is there no way around it and I will have to reorganize them into albums again?
Any help is appreciated!

Pierre C:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes, there's a very easy way. Connect the two computers together so you can copy from one to the other and then copy the iPhoto Library folder from the older iMac into the Pictures folder of the new iMac. After the copy is complete I suggest you download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This will make sure the ownership and access permissions are correct for the new library.
One way to connect the two is to connect them with an ethernet cable and create a mini network. Or you can connect the two together with a Firewire cable and boot the old iMac into Target Disk Mode and then do the copy with the new iMac.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
To get all your content off your connect your iPad to your new computer.
Then use a 3rd party piece of software to transfer your content
I have found Senuti useful but there are others listed in the article I linked to in a previous post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
That will let you transfer your non purchased content
For Purchased content log in to iTunes on the new computer
In Itunes Store click on Purchased under the Quick Links section on the right.
Download any music by clicking on the cloud button

  • Need help transferring itunes library from old computer to new laptop

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new laptop and am having trouble getting my library to transfer to my new laptop, i followed this step by step process http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US and in the end ended up with no music on my ipod and no music in the itunes library on my new computer...
So then i went into Itunes on the new computer and clicked import library under File, so i found the Music folder that i had transferred over and it imported the music but all my playlist were not there, just songs. So i ended up syncing my ipod back to my old computer so i would get all the songs and playlist back on as it was originally before this whole process...
My desktop runs XP while my new laptop runs Vista Ultimate w/ SP1 home edition, dont know if this matters...
So not sure where i should go from here, i have already Authorized my laptop with the itunes store , i was thinking of uninstalling Itunes on my laptop and starting over from scratch, will this help?
BTW when i did the original transfer i used my Ipod as the hard drive as it had plenty of storage room left on it, i do have access to a 250GB external HD i was thinking of using that and trying that to transfer the library...
So if anyone can tell me how to transfer my Itunes library from old comp to new laptop it would be greatly appreciated...

The method you used should work if followed exactly.
The key points are - is your music all together? It must all be in the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder.
When you copy the iTunes folder to the iPod you get the library database with your playlists and the iTunes Music folder containing the music files.
Since you had trouble doing this with the iPod, why not try copying your iTunes folder to the external drive.
The method is identical the one for the iPod except you leave out the iPod specific stuff.
You install iTunes on the new PC, then you drag the newly created iTunes folder out the Music folder to the desktop, then you copy the iTunes folder from the EHD into Music, replacing the one you dragged out.
When you have done that, you need to check that your account has full control of your iTunes folder - Vista is fussy about that - you will not be able to edit track info if you don't have full control.

I just got a new iMac and am trying to transfer iTunes library from old PC (barely running) to new iMac.  I tried through Home Sharing but couldn't find how to sync.  Is it necessary to get Firewire?  Or should I sync it from my iPad?  I'd like to avoid the middleman.  Thanks!

  • Transfering itunes library from old computer to new using ipod

I'm transfering my library from an old computer to a new one using my 5th gen ipod. but when everything is transfered onto the ipod the storage space only shows "other" space is used, no music or video space. And after its transfered to the new computer, nothing shows in Itunes but i can see some file info if i go into the itunes file in "my computer".

    Hi mbw34,
Are using disk mode? Probably yes.
    Well, do this:
First disable disk use, unchecking the box "Enable Disk Use". The sync all your library using the "normal" mode.
Connect the iPod to the new computer and message will appear, informing that the iPod is synced with a different computer.
To continue, please read this article on my website.
    Hope this helps!

  • Transferring iTunes library from G4 mini to new iMac

We have recently upgraded our apple computer. We got a new iMac and now I would like to be able to move my son's itunes library from the old g4 mini to the new imac. He has just received an iphone so he would like to be able to sync his iphone with itunes. I have been doing some research and this was my pan of attack, please let me know if this would work.
    1) Create a user account on the new imac that is identical to his user account on the mac mini.
    2) Copy his itunes files from the mini onto a USB flash drive
    3) Either drag the files from the UBS drive into the new itunes folder on the imac or import the files using itunes (not sure which one to to do)
I think that should do it.

I thought I had done this before with Tiger.

  • Transfering iphoto library from old computer to new

for whatever reason, i'm not able to transfer my iphoto library from my old powerbook g4<iphoto2/os10.3.9> to the new powerbook g4<iphoto5/10.4.3>. it starts the copying process but then freezes or gives an error message. any thoughts?

    Hi rusch,
If there is an Albums folder with aliases in it in the iPhoto Library folder, then take that Album folder out and trash it. It is not used by iPhoto 5 anymore.
    Hopefully that might help.

  • Transferring iPhoto Library from old Mac to new Mac

I'm trying to transfer my iPhoto library from my old mac to my new MacBook Air.  My old mac (black macbook purchased July 2008 - MacBook4,1) is running OS 10.5.8 and the OS can't be upgraded.  My iPhoto (ver 7.1.5) library needs to be prepared using the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool in order to transfer the library, but my OS doesn't support the program.  It says the upgrader tool 1.1 requires OS X version 10.6.8 or later.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac -  download and run the iPhoto library upgrader (it installs in the utilities folder of your Applications folder - double click it to run it), launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Transferring whole library from old computer to new computer

I recently bought a new computer and naturally wanted to transfer my music over to it. It was working fine through Home Sharing and I was able to get all but 129 items to transfer to my new library. The odd items out didn't transfer over because the "network connection timed out" or an "internal server error occurred". Songs included were random tracks of iTunes Album purchases, random tracks of imported CDs, and downloaded MP3's. I tried plugging both computers directly into the modem, restarting both computers and iTunes and the same thing occurred for the items not in my new library. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this issue? The transfer worked for over 2200 other items without the network timing out.

Launch iTunes holding the Option key. iTunes will ask you where you want your iTunes folder; point it at the one on your external drive.
Actually, it will ask you to "*Choose an existing library*" or "*Create a new library*".
Choose *Create a new library* and it will create a new *iTunes folder* with a new iTunes library file, iTunes library.xml and iTunes music folder.
If you select *Choose existing library*, you need to select an iTunes library file and it doesn't look like he copied that to the external.
Either one of these will not do it (alone). He would still need to add the songs to iTunes.
The easiest way to do it and maintain everything is to copy the entire /Music/*iTunes folder* from the old computer to the new computer.
Or to use your suggestion, copy the *iTunes folder* from the old computer to the external and plug it into the new computer.
Click the icon to launch iTunes, then immediately press and hold Option.
Select *Choose existing library* and select the *iTunes library file* in the iTunes folder copied onto the external.

  • Need help transferring itunes library from old laptop to new laptop

Can someone help me?? I have a new laptop and have installed itunes on it. How do I get my old library from my old laptop onto my new one? What about all my playlists?
    Thank you in anticipation!
    Lisa

There should be one iTunes Folder that contains many iTunes folders underneath it. Copy that one to a memory stick (if it will fit), not the location you copied it from. Copy it to the same place on the new computer. iTunes should find and recognize it if it was in the default location. You just need to start iTunes on the new computer.
Be sure on the old computer to start iTunes, go to the Store menu on top, and Deauthorise the old computer. On the new computer do the opposite, go to the Store menu and Authorise that computer. You will have to enter your Apple ID and password.

  • Transfering ITunes Library From Old Computer To New

I just got a new Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop with Vista. I want to move my ITunes library over from the old HP desktop with XP to the new laptop. Three Questions:
    1) Is there a relatively easy way of doing this?
    2) If yes, what are the steps?
    3) 99% of my library is comprised of songs that I have uploaded from CDs, not purchased from ITunes... does that make a difference?
I'd prefer not to have to reload all of my cd's onto the new computer.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it with the old one and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the old computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the new computer. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. When I moved iTunes a while ago for my daughter I was also using the same version of iTunes, not sure how important that is but it's probably worth keeping them the same.
If you have an iPod it can be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder onto it: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old PC remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • PLEASE HELP? TRANSFERING ITUNES LIBRARY FROM OLD COMPUTER TO NEW COMPUTER?

Heyy guys, hopefully someone can help me here because I'm not the smartest when it comes to computer stuff.
Okay here's the deal, I have a Windows laptop which is where my iTunes library is right now. I just got a new macbook pro and I want to convert my library onto the new computer. I was told how to do it briefly but I forget and I need specific directions, as in how do I load the songs onto the blank CD to convert them and so forth. If anyone can help me with specific directions on how to complete this process it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much.

    Amanda,
I don't know exactly, but I don't think you need to transfer your files from your laptop to a blank cd and then to your macbook. When I got my laptop, someone transferred music and all the items in "My Documents" from my desktop computer with a few clicks of the mouse! It was transferred wirelessly! I'll try to find out what he did and then let you know, hopefully someone else will be able to help you in the meantime though. Have a blessed day, and God bless you!

  • Transferred library from old PC to new, lost all files dl'd from ITunes

Transferred music files from old pc to new with minimal difficulty, but have now realized all songs downloaded to my library from ITunes have failed to make the trip!
I used the Ipod itself to transfer the files, as I couldn't figure out how to get the 2 pc's to transfer files via a wireless connection. Now my 60gb Ipod which had ~5800 songs using ~22gb its memory states it has 5275 songs on it and only 15.7gb available. Where did I manage to screw this up?
I imagine there is a problem where this new computer has not been authorized. True? When I first download some new songs from Itunes, will it then be authorized and my songs will reappear? Why is the amount of memory affected?
Thanks mucho for any available help. I have searched for quite a while, but haven't been able to find someone who has had the same experience or trouble.
    G

I'd imagine that's because you had no music files on your newly reformatted drive, and when you reattached your shuffle it loaded an empty file, hence no tunes.
This (transferring the files from computer to computer) was done using the instructions found here.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Don't know if that works for the shuffle, though.
