Transfering playlists to my new computer

ok so i've taken all my music from my pc and i moved it to an external hard drive which i then moved to my macbook but i was wondering if there is any way could transfer my playlists over without having to start my itunes all over again because i've bought new music since I purchased my macbook so that would be a real pain
is there anyway i could just take them off of my ipod?

On the old computer, pick the playlists you want to to transfer. File -> Export... and then in the pop up box make sure you change the pull down to export as an XML file. Save the file. Do this for each non-smart playlist you want to duplicate.
Smart playists I suggest just opening the edit Smartlist window and do a print screen then use that to recreate on the new library. If you export a smart playlist, you only get a listing of what is currently in the smart playlist so it converts it to a regular playlist and loses its smarts.
OK so take the XML files to the Mac. In that library pick File -> Import... and point to each playlist XML file. If the same tracks are in the Mac as on the old computer, your playlists will be recreated on the Mac.
Good luck,
Patrick

I bought a new MacBook and transferred my music from my old one. I have lost all playlists, song ratings, etc. It was a lot of work! Any way to get all of that to transfer?

  • Transferring playlists to a new mac computer

I have a new mac and I want to transfer all my playlists off my old mac to a new mac. I dont keep my music files in the itunes music folder and they are in many different locations on my old computer. I've copied all my music files onto my new computer, however as it is setup a little differently, they are obviously in different locations. When I import the library file from my old itunes to the new one it says "some of the files from the playlists can not be imported because they cannot be found"
So now and currently itunes has added all my playlists names in the playlist column but not a single track within these playlists? I was assuming itunes would copy the tracks into the playlists even if it wasn't aware of where the files may be on my computer and then I could double click on a track and search for the file as you do if it is missing and then itunes would automatically search the computer and find the file and then further update all the other files as it does on my old mac.
I have 100s of gigs of music and many playlists as I use itunes to maintain my dj playlists for other programs and many files are at wav/aiff/flac quality so it isnt really an option to copy to my ipod or whatever that I've read in some places.
Have you any ideas of how best to copy my playlists to the new computer?

Sorted it out. Had to add all the music files on the new computer into itunes first and then import the library file.
feel free to delete this, i just left it up incase anyone else has the issue

  • How do I move both my contents and playlists to my new computer?

How do I move both my contents and playlists to my new computer?  I have tried the suggestions in previous posts of copying the library and music folders into the itunes folder on my new pc.  I don't have the option to file>library>import anything.  The only thing that transfers, even on home sharing is purchased music.  No music loaded from CD's and no playlists.

  • Transferring files to a new computer

I have both an IPOD 20G and a Nano. On my old computer, the Nano is its own playlist within my library. I got a new computer and want to transfer files for both.
I have so many songs that I do not wish to burn them all on cds and reload. Not all of my songs came from itunes, some were uploaded or downloaded from other sources so I dont want to lose those either.
I followed the directions to manual update and enable disk use. When I get on to my new computer, I try to move the file from my ipod by dragging it to my new itunes file. When I pull it up, my new library is empty and all my music and playlists just so up under "my devices". So clearly it never transferred to the new location. I can only listen the music when the IPOD is connected. I have not even attempted to try to update my nano yet.
I tried copying my files to an external hard drive and then transferring them the new computer and only some of them transferred.
Anyone have any easy, step by step methods for transferring my old library to my new computer complete with playlists and all. I start from scratch with my nano if I have to, I just dont want to lose my library.
    Thanks

I did copy the entire Itune library from the old computere to the new computer. After downloading/updating the itunes software on the new computerI went to open the itune file--all the music is there but no playlists. Also when you connect the ipod to the computer, if you allow it to sync it wants to erase all the music on the ipod. I need to keep until I get the playlists on the new computer--the ipod is the thing that has them now.

I am trying to move my library and playlists to a new computer by burning to CD's. However, I followed the directions by going to File and then Library - then they said to go to burn CD(s) - I DO NOT have that option for some reason. How do I do this? I have done the library sharing thing but I am getting rid of my primary computer and am afraid I will lose the library.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • Transferring Elements to a new computer

I downloaded Photoshop Elements a couple years ago and just bought a new Mac. Can I transfer Elements and Bridge to my new Mac? I put the files on a drive and transferred it to my new computer, but they aren't working right. Any suggestions?

What is the version of Elements you are trying to install. And also program cannot be migrated from one computer to another, you have to install it to make it work.

  • I transferred CS5 to a new computer using PC transfer program. CS5 started up on the new computer OK, but now does not recognize raw files. Should I uninstall and reinstall again?

I transferred CS5 to a new computer using PC mover ultimate. CS5 appeared to start up normally, I had to insert the serial number from my original CD. However, now the program does not recognize CR files and Adobe bridge is not working properly.  I get messages that CS5 needs to be updated, but the updates fail. What should I do? Should I uninstall CS5 on the new computer, uninstall CS5 on the old computer using the original CD, and then reinstall CS5 using the CD on the new computer?

Transferring programs does not work well with Adobe applications.  You should install them.
As far as having the program on different machines goes, you are allowed to have two activated installations so if it is working on the original machine there is no reason to remove it unless you need the space.

  • HT1329 I just downloaded iTunes to a new computer.  It's been a while since I used iTunes on my old computer.  I don't see any of my playlists on the new computer.  What is the easiest way to transfer my playlists without having to recreate each one?

I just downloaded iTunes to a new computer.  It's been a while since I used iTunes on my old computer, so the new one has a totally different user interface.  I signed on to my account and saw my music but I have no playlists on the new computer.  What's the easiest way to replicate or restore my playlists as I had them in the old computer and in my iPod?

OK, thanks for the response.  I'm copying it onto a memory stick to transfer it to the new computer.  Still have two questions:
    1. Since there is already an iTunes folder on the new computer, created when iTunes was downloaded, where exactly do I copy the old folder onto the computer so that iTunes can find it?  In the old interface, there used to be a field where one could designate the path to find music and I don't see that in the new interface.
Assuming the above takes care of putting my playlists onto the new computer...
    2.  How do I add music that is currently stored in a back up file but was not on my old computer's drive?  I'm worried that I would have to add these one by one somehow, and there are a lot of songs.
    Thanks again.

  • Transferring camera roll into new computer.

So... I got my laptop stolen and decided to get a new one. The thing is that I can't seem to download the Photo Library pictures from my old computer that are stored in my iphone, into the new laptop... is there anyway i can do that?
    Thanks!
    J.

Photos captured by your iPhone and a photo saved from a received email, from a website, or from a received MMS are stored in your iPhone's Camera Roll. Photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
The title of your post is "Transferring camera roll into new computer" which you aren't asking about. You are asking about importing or transferring photos from your iPhone's Photo Library, which is completely separate from and has nothing to do with the Camera Roll.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process are stored in your iPhone's Photo Library, which is a one way transfer process only - from your computer to your iPhone. Photos transferred from your computer are optimized for viewing on your iPhone as part of the iTunes transfer process - the original resolution of these photos is reduced on your iPhone.
Photos stored on your computer should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data - stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only which should be kept in a separate location from your laptop in the event it is lost or stolen. The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device.
There are some 3rd party paid utilities that provide for transferring these photos in the opposite direction, but such utilities are not supported by Apple and the original resolution of these photos will be lost in the process.

  • How do you transfer an iTunes playlist to a new computer so that it stays in the same order?

How do you transfer a large playlist to a new computer so that it stays in the same order?

    Hey HalSF,
iTunes allows you to sync music with your devices in several different ways, including by playlist. See the iPhone user manual for how to -

  • How do I transfer my playlists to a new computer?

When I try to transfer my playlists to a new computer, my Ipod Touch gives me an error that it can only have one home computer.  How do I transfer the data from my Ipod touch to my new computer, as I don't want to use my old computer anymore?  In terms of data, I want all of the cd's loaded into iTunes and all the playlists from my old computer moved to the new computer.

They do if you buy a Mac. They have a migration utility. I'm not sure that migrating your data is really their responsibility though
As for size, if it fits on a touch, there are USB flash drives it will fit on. Or external hard drives. Or use a network cable.
