Transferring 10.3 to New Internal HD

The Apple Store is installing new RAM (max amount) and internal HD today in my iMac G4.
I just realized I can't find 10.3 install disks- or maybe I borrowed 10.3 from someone. I have 10.2 (grey official disks). ANyway to transfer the 10.3.9 OSX to the new HD or use an external drive somehow to maintain 10.3 during the install?
ALso can I go from 10.2 to 10.4 eventually?

If you currently have OS 10.3.9 installed on your old HD, using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper will transfer (clone) all of the OS 10.3.9 files, applications & associated data files to the new HD.

Installing Leopard and new internal hard drive at same time, best plan?

Ok so basically the title explains what I need to do. I am currently travelling in Europe, and returning home to New York on Tuesday night. I have a new hitachi 250gb HD and will have Leopard waiting for me at home when I arrive, and will get right to doing this installation. I am writing on the discussion boards here because I am hoping the users here can give me their opinions on what is the best plan of action to do this whole install?
So what I was thinking was, I should remove the hard drive that's already inside, put it into an external enclosure. Then, put my new blank 250gb hard drive into the macbook pro, close up the computer, then put the Leopard OSX install disk, and do a completely fresh install of Leopard. Then, after installing (or during installing?) I should run the migration assistant program to get all my files and settings etc. transferred over to the new internal hard drive with Leopard on it, from the old hard drive that will be plugged in from an enclosure as an external drive.
Will this plan have any problems that I am not aware of? Is there a better process for doing this task? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I am anxious to get my new hard drive into the computer because my 160gb is filling up, and dying so badly to use the new Leopard!!

You could also put the new disk in the external enclosure, partition it using disk utility. Then make a clone of your current hard disk to the new external one using the restore feature in disk utility. Boot from the external disk and Install Leopard as an upgrade keeping all your files and setting. check everything is all running how I should and swap drives over. That's another option for you.

Could not see my photos after Installing new internal drive

Aaarrgghhh! I installed a new internal drive to keep data separate from applications, transferred all the data to the new drive and now all the work I did in sorting thousands of photos has gone, same with iTunes. Does anytone know how to restore my categories of photos and tunes?

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff: What version of iPhoto. What version of the Operating System. Details. What were you doing when the problem arose? Did it ever work properly? Step-by-step descriptions of how you got to this issue. If something doesn't work, are there error messages? What happens when you try to do this thing? And what steps have you tried already to solve the issue. With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that a helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data. Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one. See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD. Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select. Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows. Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items. That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

Since we don't know which MBP you have or what OS was initially installed on it, try this. Start up the Mac and hold down the Command and "R" keys. If you have an internet connection and if the MBP came with Lion installed, you should be able to boot into Internet Recovery. From there, you can download Lion from Apple's servers and install it. That's assuming the new HD has already been installed and formatted (you can format it yourself using the Disk Utility that's available in Internet Recovery).

How do I get my Old iWeb Sites off my External HD (1 Domain file) and onto my new internal HD?

I justrecently had to replace my internal HD on my iMac. Before doing it, I backed up my 2 iWeb Sites (the Domain File) onto my external HD.
Now I have a new Internal HD on my iMac.
When I open my domain file located on my external HD, iWeb opens. Now I'd like to save the file back onto my internal HD.
How do I save my 2 web sites that I now see on the left back onto my internal HD. (When I click on "File", "Save", it just saves it again on the external HD, because it's reading the file from the external HD?)

You need to copy the domain.sites file from the external hard drive into your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on the new hard drive. If there is no iWeb folder in the Applicaiton Support folder create one.
Be sure it's your home library that you're working in.

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use an Apple wall-mount charger. Do NOT use a computer's USB port. Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear). An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem. I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
According to Apple:

For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

My time machine backup (on external hdd) doesn't see my new internal HDD.

I just installed a new HDD and RAM in my mid-09 MBP. When I try and restore from a time machine backup on an external drive, I only get the option to install it on the other partition on that drive - my new internal drive doesn't even appear as an option. Could it be because the backup is from lion but my os disc is leopard?

How can I move my backed up Itunes library from my external hard drive to my new internal hard drive? I went through the steps listed on the support page, and imported the .xml playlist that I moved to the desktop. Now all my playlists (names only) are on Itunes, but there is no content. Help?

assuming you moved the whole iTunes folder to your new internal HD, try this:
launch iTunes with the options key pressed. this window will appear
click +choose library+ and navigate to the _iTunes library file_ on your internal HD.

MacBook Pro doesn't recognise new Internal HDD

Hi there, I was hoping to get some help on this ...
I purchased a WD Scorpio Blue 750GB internal HDD and Apricorn kit and used SuperDuper to clone my current internal HDD. The clone copy worked fine and I can boot the OS via the new WD HDD if it’s connected via USB, but when I install it inside, the Macbook doesn’t recognise it and a folder with a blinking ‘?’ appears.
I’ve tried booting up from the disk utility on start up to hopefully select it and that doesn’t work either as it cannot find the HDD.
I’ve tried booting up from disk utility and using my Time Machine back-ups to copy over the new WD HDD but it doesn’t recognise the new internal HDD either.
I did format it before I cloned the new drive to be OS Extended (Journaled) but I didn’t make multiple partitions and not sure if this is a step I'm missing.
When I put the old HDD back in it boots fine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Didn't matter how many times I reformatted, partitioned mapped the HDD when it was connected externally, the issue was was the Super Duper clone. (even though it would start up as an external start up disk.)
Had to install the new HDD internally and reformat it from boot up through Disk Utility then do a restore from a previous Time Machine back up.
Works fine now, no issues.

I'm having a hard time booting from external drive to rewrite everything on new internal drive

I got this Powerbook used w/o any startup or software disks. It has some valuable software on it. It is over 7 years old and I want to put the system and all software and other files on a new internal hard drive. I bought two Western Digital drives to accomplish this but have been unable so far. I have used SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner to successfully write everything onto the external drive after partitioning it Apple Partition Map. Neither Other World Computing (where I got the drives) or Western Digital have been of any use at all with advice. When I have the new clean drive in the Mac and the external connected by firewire and turn the Mac on while holding down the Option key all I get is a blank screen with a circular arrow and a right-pointing arrow and a mouse pointer. Clicking on either does nothing. If it is not possible to do it this way then can you suggest an alternate route?
My system: Powerbook G4 OSX 10.5.8 1.5GHz PowerPC.
New internal hard drive: WD 160GB Scorpio Blue.
External drive: same but the connector is for use only in an enclosure.

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one?
I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

Do you already have Time Machine making backups onto the 2TB drive? If so, after you get the internal drive replaced, boot up into the recovery partition (hold down ⌘R) and restore the latest Time Machine backup that you have onto the new internal drive.
I recommend always having two backups. I'd use SuperDuper to make a complete clone of your internal drive onto an external drive in addition to having the Time Machine backup.
Boot Camp is what is used to make partitions for Windows. How much space to allocate depends on how much space you expect Windows to use up based on how you plan to use it.

Time Machine To Be Used On New Internal Hard Drive

I recently bought a new 500GB internal hard drive, on which I have copied (not migrated) my files and applications to. I have used Time Machine on the old 120GB drive with a 1TB external hard drive. I have this drive partitioned such that only 320GB was dedicated to Time Machine and because I spent the last 6 months downloading files (mainly itunes music) onto my old internal drive, and copying it onto another part of the partition on the 1TB external, then updating Time Machine, I only have 135GB left in the Time Machine part of the partition.
I have not yet backed up my new internal onto Time Machine as I am worried about space.
I tried changing the sizes of the partitions in disk utility so I could put more space in Time Machine (I have 3 other partitions) by dragging the sizes of the other partitions to make them smaller. I received the error message "file system or repair failed."
Is there a way to make more space in the Time Machine partition?
Will a new back-up add all the files I have copied for a second time (they are now on different locations on the hard disk)?
Can I copy the folders of Time Machine back ups to another partition to free up space in order to use Time Machine from scratch with the new internal drive?
What is the best solution?

Do you mean you copied files into the TM partition, or a different partition on the same disk as your TM backups?
I mean I copied the files from my old internal drive onto my new drive - I haven't done anything with Time Machine yet.
I only have 135GB left in the Time Machine part of the partition.
How much of the 320 gb is used by TM backups and how much by the other files?
As far as I know all of the used space is TM backups, so 185 GB

As khassani noted, you can't just copy them. SuperDuper! will do it, but so will the Restore tab of Disk Utility. But you must copy an entire partition to another entire partition, and select Erase Destination.
Roughly how much data have you put on the new drive?
How old is the oldest backup in TM?
I have put 140 GB on the new drive so far (60GB from the old drive, 45GB with files for Logic Studio, which I would be happy not to back up, and the rest with system files, library files, other new files and applications)
The oldest back up is October '08. I have been backing up manually about once a week if that makes a difference.
You may be able to let TM back-up the new drive, then manually delete the old backups of the items you moved, via the TM interface. See item 12 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
