Transferring a site from GoDaddy

I have a client who's transferring her site from GoDaddy to another hosting provider. Her GD acct. doesn't expire for a month or so. If she can change her DNS to the new hosting service can she put a redirect on her GD page to the new site? Or does GD immediately deactivate her acct? Or is there a better way to make this transition without the site being down for a couple days? Is there an issue with two DNS's for the same site? I don't know how it works.

Well I certainly agree with you about the other two companies but Godaddy is a different situation than either of the other two companines.
The only beef I have with Adobe is their support. We bought new DW & PS cs4's and they wouldn't load on our XP machines. I called Adobe support and they admitted there was a problem with the two programs loading on XP machines. They then told me nothing we can do about it so check our the forums and then hung the phone up on me.
Microsoft has always given us awesome support. We bought copies of Expression Web 4, didn't do the up grades bought new disc.It loaded fine on all our machines including the XP machines but one and it wouldn't activate. They worked with us on the phone for several days everyday until they had the problem resolved and then asked us to help them test a beta version of some software.
Godaddy is a registrar and a hosting company not a software company like Adobe and Microsoft. I remember when Godaddy was a decent company but undoubtly they've gotten greedy with some arrogance thrown in also. In the eyes of many 1000's of web designers and developers they are the scum of the earth as a registrar and a hosting company. Their countrol panel is junk, their support is junk, their hosting is junk and as a registrar they control your domain not you. They have lied to me like no other company in the industry, they have cheated and lied to some of our clients so we made the decision to dump them forever and join the ranks of the many 1000's of GD sucks designers and developers. We will not take a new client if they have their domain and or hosting with GD unless they change registrars and hosting companies. That's one of the main reasons GD is taking a large hit on this deal...1000's of mad designers and developers that's had to deal with their lies, arrogance and controlling ways.
I had a friend send this to me today and all we could do was laugh because we had been there and done that with GD more than one time.
http://www.ripoffreport.com/directory/godaddy-com.aspx
I condone no one if they're happy with GD and I certainly hope the GD lovers will continue be a satisfied customer of them.
We're certainly happy with the honest registrars and hosting companies we use for our clients now.
Happy New Year everyone, may you have a blessed and safe one.

    Hi Phyllis,
You should no need to use the authorisation code as you are not physically moving the domain - you are simply pointing it to the BC servers to manage.
Have you set up the domain name in BC already?  It won't work until you have done that.
    regards

  • Retrieve iweb site from godaddy

I had to do a clean install on my mac pro - so could not alter my iweb site which is hosted on godaddy, using fetch I retrieved the all web site files in one folder, but cannot seem to get iweb to run them.
Is there a special place that I should put them?
    Thanks
    Mike

iWeb won't 'run' those pages because iWeb has no import facility so is unable to open html files and a published site, which is effectively what you have downloaded from GoDaddy.
Did you not backup your hard drive before you did a clean install? Did you not back up your domain.sites file to be precise? This is where iWeb stores all its data and is the file that you need to be able to make any alterations to your site. It is located under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. Make sure it is your User Library that you look under and not your System Library, as you will not find iWeb there.
If you can't find this file then you are looking at re-building your site from scratch in iWeb.
This is a hard lesson to learn about backing up your domain.sites file, but if you have done this once you won't make the same mistake again.

  • Transferring iweb site from 1 mobileme account to another

i need to transfer my iweb site from one mobile me account to another, but i dont want to buy it in HOPES that i can do it. I want to make sure i actually can.
    anybody have experience in this?

Everything you made in iWeb is stored in a file on your hard disk.
You can find this file in it's default location.
../Yourusername/Library/Application Support/iWeb, the name of the file is Domain.sites2
You can freely copy/move this file to an other computer or an other user on the same computer with the other MobileMe account.
If you want to keep everything "as is" on your computer in iWeb and only want to change the MobileMe account: open System Preferences / tab MobileMe / 'log out' and 'log in' with the other account.

  • Transfering web site from laptop to desktop

I have been doing my iWeb websites on my desktop but have made the mistake of doing another website on my laptop. Is it possible to take my laptop website and add it to my desktop library of websites in iWeb?

Yes it is. You can do it one of two ways: 1 - move the domain.sites2 file from the laptop to the Desktop, rename it and put it in the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder with the other domain.sites2 file. You can open each in turn by double clicking on them (drag them into the Finder's side pane for quicker access); 2 - use iWebSites to merge the two domain files. Be sure to keep a backup of each domain file just in case the merge doesn't go as advertised.
If you use method 1 the last published site will the the default site if you use the minimum URL for your MMe account: http://web.me.com/YourMMe_AccountName/
If you use method 2 the site that is on top of the left hand pane in iWeb will be the default site for the minimum URL.

  • Merge iweb sites from multiple user accounts on same computer

With the previous iweb version, my children created their own iweb sites on their own users, but all under my own .mac account. It worked great.
But now with the new "upgraded" iweb '08, that isn't allowed anymore.
So, I created a new user on our computer for all of us to use to maintain our multiple iweb accounts on.
How can I move multiple iweb sites from multiple users on the same computer into one user?

Each of the user's work in iWeb will be contained in a single file, Domain.sites2, which can be found in this location on the hard drive for each user account. You will need to copy all of these Domain.sites2 files to an external drive, or, at the very least, burn them to a disk to make them transferable from one user account to another. A flash drive also works great for this.
Once you have made all of these Domain files accessible from the new user account that you created, you will still have a formidable task ahead of you, i.e., publishing separate sites, from separate Domain.sites2 files, to the same .Mac account/directory. In other words, bringing all of these Domain files together for access by a single user account will not solve the problem. You may very well be able to solve the problem with things the way they are, but it will involve some shuffling of Site's files on the iDisk prior to publishing.
The method I'm going to give you has worked well for me. So far, here in the forums, I've read posts from (2) other users who were also successful. Conversely, I know of at least (3) other users who have been unsuccessful with this approach. I sure hope it works for you.
Open System Preferences and go to .Mac. Turn syncing off, if it is on, and leave it off.
Now, in Finder, navigate to the current Site files on your iDisk, following this path:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/NameOfSiteFolder
Drag the Site folder that is named for your site, (not the directory Site folder), back one level on the iDisk, into the Web folder. This is where some run into difficulties--you may get an error message that the folder is "in use, and cannot be moved". I have never gotten this message, and am able to move my Site's folders around with no problem on the iDisk.
If you are successful moving the folder, choose one of your other accounts on your machine, launch iWeb, and Publish all to .Mac. The existing site on the server will not be deleted. Now, go back to the iDisk and move that site folder, (the one you just published), back one level, again, to the root Web directory. Publish your next site, from your next account.
When you are finished publishing sites, just move the Site folders back to their original location on the iDisk--Web/Sites/SiteFoldersHere. All sites will be accessible from a browser using the web.mac.com/username/nameofsite url.
It is important to use the Publish all to .Mac command in iWeb. A simple Publish to .Mac command will not put the correct index.html file in place on the server.
Post back and inform us of your success.

  • Moving iWeb site from PowerBook G4 (iWeb 1.1.2) to Intel iMac (iWeb 2.0.4)

We were out of town recently and had a big family adventure that we wanted to share with friends and family who live far from us. We decided to use iWeb on our PowerBook G4 to do this. We had never used iWeb prior to this. We naively thought that we could then just always work on it from our iMac thinking that it was not published to our hard drive but uploaded via our .mac. I have learned since coming home that that is not the case and that, in fact, the domain lives on our PowerBook.
Now we are home and we would like to transfer the site from our PowerBook G4 to our Intel iMac given that we use the iMac predominantly and the PowerBook for travel only.
I read on one support page that all I needed to do was move the domain file under library/applicationsupport/iWeb/domain on the PowerBook to the same location on the iMac. But then I read in other areas of the Apple Support Site, including these forums, that I may not be correct in this. I also thought I read somewhere that the two iWeb applications on the computers need to be the same version, but in other places this is not mentioned. Our PowerBook is running iWeb 1.1.2 and our iMac is running iWeb 2.0.4.
What I am hoping is possible is that I can just use my firewire and Target Disk Mode to transfer the file like I did when I was transferring our iPhoto library to the iMac and our iMovies. It did not seem to matter that the two computers had different versions of these applications, the moves worked like a charm. And I am hoping that perhaps I could still work on the webpage from the laptop when we travel and want to add to the site to keep our friends and family up to date with our activities. Are these things possible?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks so much!

in the old days of .mac, before mobile me, there was a way to view your webpage or homepage...
Teresa ~ That was probably using the .Mac HomePage web-based app — but that has nothing to do with iWeb. See this Apple doc:
    _MobileMe: Finding your .Mac Homepage_
...figure out how to access my iWeb page using my .mac MobileMe.
Currently, you can't manage your iWeb page via the web — it must be done via the iWeb app on a Mac.
...does that mean that after i transfer it, i can't access it from my iWeb app and that i have to go to it via the library...
You can put that transferred domain file wherever you want on your iMac and you can have multiple domain files. See this article:
_How do you manage multiple domain files for iWeb?_
Double-clicking a domain file will open its site(s) in iWeb. Double-clicking the iWeb app will open the last domain file used.
...or does it mean it will show up in my sites on iWeb and i double click it at that point and then it will convert from 1.1.2 to 2.0.4?
It won't show up as a site in iWeb until you've double-clicked the transferred domain file on your iMac and iWeb has converted it to 2.x format.
But whatever you do, first do backups of your domain files to an external drive so you don't confuse them with the domain files on your Mac's internal drive:

  • Updated iWeb site from 06 to 08 - but counter reset to 0

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Updated iWeb site from iWeb 06 to iWeb 08.
Counter for website reset to 0.
Any way to retrieve old site's counter setting?
    Thank you,

    Hi xharris,
    1) Have a look at the following page about transferring the website from one computer to the other
    http://alyeska.altervista.org/en/iWebTransferSite.html
(also read Note 1 of that page!)
    2) Be sure to update iWeb '08 to the latest version (2.0.3). Then double-click the domain file you transferred and iWeb will launch and prompt you to update the domain file to version 2.
The problems some people experience are that some objects might move and not be in the right place anymore or things like that. Just have a look at it once you opened it in iweb '08 before publishing it to the web.
Also make a Backup of the Domain file before- after- you updated and from time to time

  • Multiple Sites w/ GoDaddy Host

I created a website with iWeb, bought a domain name and hosting space from GoDaddy, published the site to a folder and uploaded it to GoDaddy with Fetch. Everything worked fine. I created another user account on my computer as a way to create another website with iWeb and keep it separate from the first one (a suggestion I got on these boards, by the way), created my site, bought another domain name from GoDaddy for that site, and now I want to upload it to my GoDaddy hosting space (the hosting account I got allows you to upload many sites to it if you want to). My concern is that when you upload the site that iWeb created from the published folder, you upload the index.html file and the folder iWeb created with the files for your site. iWeb always creates an index.html file for each web site. So there is already a file in my hosting space called index.html. When I upload the second site, is that going to somehow confuse or mess up the first one?

When you go to godaddy.com and click on the link that tells you about their various hosting plans, they have a comparison of plan features. They have Economy, Deluxe, & Premium. The last two allow Unlimited Sites and describe this as "Multiple Websites may be hosted within a single hosting account sharing the same disk space and bandwidth quotas."
I have one site up there under a domain name, so there is an index.html file and a folder with all the other files for that site. I bought another domain name for my second site, but I'm not sure yet how they will be differentiated when they are sharing the same disk space. My concern is that when I upload the second site, it too will have an index.html file that needs to go up, and will that overwrite the first one already up there and mess up that first site?
This is my first time using a program like iWeb to make a site. In the past (and that was a long time ago) I wrote my own html from scratch, and had control over what I named that first page that pointed to all the others.

  • Site from another computer

I have saved my domain to a flash drive in order to transfer it to another computer. I transferred the site successfully but once I made changes, saved them, and then uploaded the site, I lost the domain I had saved from my flash drive. What am I doing wrong, please?

I am just not clear what to do once I have made changes and have published the new information.
You shouldn't have to do anything. iWeb will save the information in the Domain.sites file. You can keep this file in a folder, or even on your desktop and iWeb will launch from a double-click on the file.

  • Move a site from one Mac to another without losing sites already there

I would like to move a site from one Mac to another without losing the websites that I have already built on the other Mac. Transfering the Domain file is not helping. Is there away to open the new domain file and adding those sites to the domain file associated with this copy of iWeb? I have searched the discussions but am not seeing any clear answers. They all seam to invilve new users or losing the sites already on that mac.

I seem to have solved my own problem. This may help other users. I found a tip and a web page that suggested moving the Domain File from the application support folder to another on the desktop on one of the computers and then putting the 2nd Domain File from the other computer in a separate folder on the desktop. This is because you can not change the name of the Domain File . Then by double clicking the Domain File with the site wanted, iWeb opens with that set of sites.
I started with what was to be the new master Domain File and stated a new site with a blank page. saved, did not publish and closed iWeb. Opened from the other Domain File and then clicked and opened the site and page I wanted, then selected all, copied all and closed iweb. Went back to the master Domain File , opened iWeb using that, went to the blank page and pasted in the page from the other Domain File from the other computer. Saved, closed iWeb and repeated till I had all pages. Changed the names to match the sites and Pages. I did not allow iWeb to publish during this process. Took all of 10 minutes and I now have a Domain File with all the sites in one place. I then copied this file back into its original location in Library/application support/iWeb on both computers. I now have all sites in iWeb on both computers.

  • Never transferred my website from mobile me

Multiple issues here... some i'm sure... very obvious...apologize ahead of time for being completely in the dark in the new I cloud changeover.
    1.  Never transferred my website to I cloud... Is it gone forever?
    2.  My original hardware that I created the website on, was stolen, so I was never able to edit the website, because I never figured out how to access the site from my new mac book pro anyway.
    3.  From aperture, I would publish a proofing page to mobile me for photo clients to look at proofs... can I still do that through I cloud?
    4.  my current operating system is 10.6.8.. do I need to upgrade, update, to access i cloud?

Everything on MobileMe has been deleted, I'm afraid.
iCloud does not provide website hosting: you will need to find another service - there are plenty to choose from.
If you could publish a proofing page to MobileMe you can do it to another hosting service (though as said, not iCloud).
Snow Leopard cannot access most of iCloud's facitlities - the situation is explained in this page:
    iCloud and Snow Leopard
but none of that is relevant to your question as there is no website hosting. If Aperture has been working fine in Snow Leopard there is no reason why it shouldn't go on working - publishing to another service is perfectly straightforward.

  • Migration of email from GoDaddy's Office 365 product

We currently have Office 365 email accounts purchase from GoDaddy. We're not happy with their service and want to migrate to Microsoft.  I know that Office 365 from both companies is the same on the back end but what is needed to move our domain

  • I need help modifying my iWeb site from another Mac than the one it was designed on:

I did exactly as directed in the Help file "to Modify your site from another computer", but when I click on the Domain file it launches iWeb to start a new website without anything from the site I created. The Macs are a mirror image of each other with the same iWeb version 3.0.4. I am transitioning from my MacBook to my new iMac, so the laptop files were all transferred to the iMac by the Apple Store when I bought it. The only difference is that the laptop is OS 10.6.8, and the new iMac is OS 10.7.5. After the transfer of all the files at the store, I proceeded to make the website on the laptop, but now need to work on the website from my iMac...but I need help getting the file to work on the iMac.
    PLEASE HELP!
    Thanks!

The trick that solved it for me was the last note about how to make the hidden folder appear (due to Lion OS 10.75):
Note for OS X Lion users :
To show the hidden Library folder in the Home Directory (Cmd-Shift-H) hold the Option (=Alt) key when choosing theGo menu in the Finder.

  • How to migrate site from one account to another

I want to migrate site from one account subscription to another account subscription. Both account owners are different.

I'm afraid you cannot transfer purchased items from one account to another: this is a limitation imposed by the copyright owners. However recent purchases from the iTunes Store are not DRM-protected so you may be able to play them anyway if you manually copy them across. You will need to drag the out of the original iTunes to a folder on the desktop, and then transfer that to your new Mac and drag them into iTunes there. Try it with a few there and see if it works.
Should you have any movies, though, these cannot  be transferred.
