Transferring Aperture version files from notebook to iMac ?

Hi
I have been working with my Aperture on my Notebook as I have travelled and would now like to transfer these versions to my i mac Aperture when I get home.
Is this possible and what is the best way to do it ?
Or should I save versions to my Notebook HD and then transfer to my i Mac ?
many thbnks if you can assist .
cheers
Roger

Roger,
Aperture has a "Merge" mode when reimporting an Aperture library, that has been edited, back to the library it has been copied from.
Connect your travel mac to your iMac in target disk mode (OS X Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode) so that your iMac sees the notebook as a disk (requires Firewire), or copy your Aperture library from the notebook to an external disk.
Then launch Aperture on the iMac and use "File > Import > Library".
When prompted opt for "Merge" not "Add" and select to keep the versions from the Notebook.
See the manual: Working with Library Files, To merge the modified library from the second computer into the library of the first computer
As a precaution I'd repair both the libraries before merging:
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library

  • Transferring iTunes U files from iPad to iMac

I don’t seem to be able to transfer a iTunes U lecture video to my iMac. When I transfer purchases, everything transfers but that. Is there an alternate way? Also iTunes does seem to be able to play iTunes U videos on my iMac from my iPad.

Sync seems very broken right now, at least on my macbook/ipad combo (using itunes 10.5.3).
If you start downloads from your ipad, sync doesn't copy back any course documents, and also because they're not on the source mac, get broken in the itunes U app. The video's get copied accross however, and after pulling the cord out and back in again, you can drag the video's that made it to your mac back onto your ipad to replace it.
So say you want the course documents on your mac, and go download them manually from the itunes store, then copy them accross in the same way as the video's.. they make the motions of copying, but just vanish.
Never had problems like this using apple products before. Not sure what the purpose of the Itunes U section in Sync is... Can someone who's successfully synced video's and documents between the iTunes U app and Itunes on the desktop set me straight? I was hoping it worked like apps.. when there's a mismatch syncing resolves itself great for apps...

Change your settings in Sharing preferences, for one, and remove the server out of the Finder's sidebar. Obviously, this is the result of transfering all your other computer's preferences to your new computer.

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • What's the best way to move files from my 2012 iMac to my 2014 MBP?

What’s a good way to move files from my 2012 iMac to my MBP?
I prefer to do graphic work on my 21-inch iMac (2012 version). But when I travel I need to copy files to my 2014 MBP. I learned that my 2012 iMac is too old for use of AirDrop, so I’m copying and moving files with a flash drive. That seems slow and clumsy. Is there a better way?

Target Disk Mode would provide a direct connection between the two Macs:

Nothing simpler than that is available.
    Ciao.

  • I transferred a pages file from ipad to mac (also pages) via email for editing. However received message that cannot save edited document to the mac because "trial period has expired for iwork"! I have purchased pages for both machines separately. Ideas?

I transferred a pages file from ipad to mac (also pages) via email for editing. It opened normally. However, after editing, received message that cannot save edited document to the mac because "trial period has expired for iwork"! I have purchased pages for both machines separately and presumed they would work without a hitch. Am I missing something?

It used to be that to update the trial to the licensed version with the box, you just inserted the DVD & ran the installer to convert the trial to licensed. This changed with Snow Leopard. You now need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

    Hi,
    Try Target Disk Mode
OS X Yosemite: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
    There is also Migration Assistant.
OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device

How do I transfer files from my old iMac to my new Pro laptop?

If you can get both computers on the Internet at the same time without re-cabling, you have the connection infrastructure needed to enable file sharing and share those files.
That said, many users find it easier to use FireWire Target Disk mode to treat the old computer as a big Hard drive, and just drag and drop the files, or use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistent.
There is a really good guide here:

  • Transfer files from old CRT iMac

My mom just got a new Intel iMac, and when she was setting it up, it told her she could transfer files from her old iMac using a firewire cable. Well, the old iMac doesn't have firewire. Does she have any other options? She's not very computer savvy, so I'm trying to make this as painless as possible for her. Thanks.

I don't know much about the transfer program, or whether or not it may use USB. The way I did it about 4 years ago was by using the file sharing feature. Doing it that way is a little more involved and takes some moderate knowledge of the Mac OS platform. I used just a run of the mill ethernet cable. I am sure you can find in apple support documents the procedure to connect the two. I would find the page for you myself but I need to get to work. I am late.

  • I can't migrate files from my old imac to a new one.

I can't migrate files from my old imac to a new one. I'm using a firewire 800 to a thunderboldlt adapter, my new imac doesn't find the source. Would a usb 2 to usb 2 work?

Did you put your old iMac in Target Disk mode? You need to do this to use Migration Assistant to transfer your files to the new iMac.
Hold the T key while your old iMac is starting up to start up in Target Disk mode. After doing this, your new iMac will detect it as an external drive, so now you can transfer your files through Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872?viewlocale=en_US

  • Transferring network user files from Windows Server 2003 to Mac OSX 10.5.8

I'm wondering if any network admins out there have a suggested method of transferring network user files from a Windows Server 2003 to an XServe running 10.5.8?
When we did the file transfer, clicking and dragging, there were a myriad permissions issues that subsequently arose. Surely there is a way to strip permissions off files PRIOR to the transfer?? Maybe not, but I'm wondering how you folks have done it.
We have had nothing but persistent permissions issues since the transfer (i.e. folks who should have access to files, being denied access, including the local server admin!!). This also translates to synch errors for network mobile accounts.

Assuming that "original" means a G3/CRT iMac, not wireless. The G3 iMacs didn't have Bluetooth. The good news, though, is that any standard USB keyboard and mouse will work with them, even the ones designed for Windows that you can pick up for ten bucks or so.
