Transferring application to my MBP

I've just acquired two used iBooks as gifts for relatives entering high school. The two iBooks are coming with some software programs that I use routinely - and some that I don't have but would like to. In these cases the software on the iBook is a newer, more advanced version than what I have on my MBP. What is the easiest? best? way to transfer/copy these applications to my MBP before giving the iBooks away? Keep in mind I want to leave the software on the iBooks as is.
I may also want to move/copy some software between the iBooks. Both iBooks are running 10.5 and my MBP is running 10.4.11

It depends on the application. Many Mac applications are self contained and all you need to do is copy the application from the Application folder in the iBook to the Application folder on your MBP. Other applications (Adobe software, Apple's Pro software, etc.) installs additional files in the user and/or system Library folder. If you use Spotlight and search for the name of the app and/or vendor (e.g. search for Adobe and then search for Photoshop) you might be able to locate these. If you move them to the same location on your MBP, it should work. All of this assumes that you have valid licenses for both your MBP and the iBook...

  • Transferring Applications from PC to Touch

I have an 8 GB iPod Touch that I bought not too long ago. It's software version 1.1.4 (with Software Upgrade), and I am having trouble with transferring my applications to the Touch. I purchased the FREE applications from the iTunes store on my computer, but it won't let me drag the items into my Touch profile. Help me, please!

I am having the same issue: transferring applications from my computer to my iPod touch. I have the most recent software update which I purchased last week, however when I try to transfer applications (from the Apps Store) from my computer to my touch it does not work. It brings up an error saying I do not have permission to do so.
    Help!

  • When downloading OS update I get a message to transfer my applications. I cannot find anything related to transferring applications.

Where do i find information on transferring applications when uploading my iPad?

I dont know if they transferre or not,   In fact, i dont know if a sync captures them or not.  but it sort of does not matter.  At least to me.  When you open the app it synces with the store anyway, and when you look in your library, their archive should have it for you.   The only time it would really matter, i guess, is if you were out of network, and wanted to read.    If im going on a plane, i just take a peek and make sure the book i want is on there before i go.

  • Migration Assistant Continues To Hang On "Transferring Applications Folder"

I'm attempting to use Migration Assistant to transfer my father's old 13" MacBook to a New 15" MacBook Pro.  However, it continually hangs when it gets to "Transferring Applications Folder".  Any thoughts on what might cause it to hang?

    Likely copy protected.
Avoid Migration Assistant if all possible.
Install programs from fresh sources and use a Firewire cable to T boot the old Mac's hard drive to the desktop of the new Mac and simply drag and drop contents of the users folders into the new folders. (example: contents of Pictures, Movies, Documents etc)
Use the same setup name and hard drive name of the old machine, this way when you replace the iTunes folder all the playlists will be correct.

  • Time machine hard drive for transfering files from 2010 MBP to rMBP

    Hello!
I have a couple of questions here!
I will be getting the rMBP in the next few weeks so want to do a bit of housekeeping before transferring across.
    1) What is the best way to clear my current MBP of files and applications that i dont use and are just taking up space? I currently have a 256GB hard drive with 8GB free - there should be no reason for this as my large audio/ Raw photo/ video editing files are on an external hard drive. So i think there must be a lot of flotsam and jetsam on there that needs to be removed as i don't want to carry that from computer to computer!
    2) Is Time machine the best option for this kind of service?
    3) Can anyone recommend an external hard drive for the job? I don't want to rely on thunderbolt ones at the moment so would it just be any usb hard drive seeing as Apple has sodded of firewire?
    Cheers
    K*

    OK, I'll bite:
    1) you can just delete the documents that you don't use by throwing them in the Trash. To delete apps and all associated files (and some will disagree with me or suggest another application) I recommend using AppDelete. I believe it's $13 or so but I have used AppZapper and AppCleaner as well but find that AppDelete finds all associated files.
    2) After you've rid yourself of your 'junk' files, I recommend using Time Machine on a dedicated or partitioned hard drive for backups. When you get your new machine, you can just use Time Machine to restore all of your settings, apps, documents, etc. For everything you ever wanted to know about Time Machine, see  http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
    3) A USB drive is definitely the way to go. I would recommend the G-Drive series from Hitachi here. They have all sorts of connections, including USB 2.0 and Firewire 800. When Apple (finally) releases their Thunderbolt>FW800 adapter, you'll be ready. Others might recommend USB 3.0 drives for the speed but I've seen too many posts of, in particular, Western Digital USB 3.0 drives that have problems with the 2012 Macs to go the USB 3.0 route right now. Maybe someone will jump in and recommend a USB 3.0 drive that they actually have working on a 2012 MBP?
    Good luck,

  • After transferring applications and documents to my new mac, the applications won't open?

I transferred pages, keynote and photoshop from my old white macbook to my new macbook pro through the use of a hardrive. At first the applications came up as question marks on the dock and clicking on them had no response. I then tried transferring them again and when i clicked on them it saying i need to check if it works with this version on OS X and that i may need to reinstall the application. Both computers have all updates downloaded and the newest software and it still doesn't work? My friends have the same macbooks and did the same thing to their new macbook pros and the applications work for them? What do i do?

All three of the apps that you name have auxiliary files installed when you install the application - is you just copied the application files only, they likely aren't going to work.
You really should just install the apps anew - redownload Pages and Numbers from the App Store and reinstall Photoshop from your PS disc or disk image. I doubt that the apps will even work if you simply copy the app file from one Mac to another.

  • Clean install and transferring applications

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro a year and a half ago with the top performing quadcore i7 with 8GB of RAM. Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion. I have had some serious performance issues. I have already done a time reinstall and still have the same performance problems, which is pretty poor and a very hot core. I have read that doing a clean install and transfering file from the TM results in noticably better performance. I have never done this before so I like to know the risks and can I transfer my applications (pages, keynotes, word, powerpoint, ect.)

Yes, that is an option although you will need to take care you do not restore from backup something that is the direct cause of your problems.
All your applications may be reinstalled from the App Store or installation DVDs depending upon where and how they were purchased.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Migration Assistant transferred applications but not other files

I just bought a new MacBook Air yesterday and connected wirelessly to my 2007 MacBook to transfer everything via Migration Assistant. All of my applications were transferred, however none of my 'desktop' or 'downloads' files made it over. I've tried twice now. Any ideas why that might be and what to try?

If the data is from another account, then they're there, but only accessable by the account that has ownership. Transfer those manually or use the other account to change the permissions outside of the home folder, or in the shared folder for that aaccount.
Transfer manually, anything else. Here's an in depth help guide for Time Machine and Migration.

Reason 105 of why Setup Assistant is better than Migration Assistant to use on a new Mac the transfer from an old Mac. You would not have had this problem.

  • Transfer Purchses in Itunes is not transfering applications

I recently bought a new computer. I managed to transfer everything in my itunes from the previous computer but I am having issues getting the applications that are exclusively on my iphone to transfer onto my computer. I've read all the info on how to do it but its not working. I've authorized my new computer, and I've done the "transfer purchases" and even though itunes seems to be going through the motions of transferring the applications, when the progress bar finishes there is no sign of the applications. So as of this moment my applications are the only thing not synced because when I click on the "sync applications" option, the pop up tells me that all the apps on my iphone will be cleared and replaced with the ones on my computer (which don't include the ones I've downloaded straight from the iphone).
I was so frustrated that I re synced my iphone with my old computer and tried to transfer the applications on that computer but it didn't work either!! So I am thinking this is something to do with the new itunes 9? Help!

Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store

  • Transferring applications to external hard drive

I have a macbook and my startup disk was full because of so many photos and videos. So I purchased an external hardrive in order to load those items onto it. I thought I had done it right, but when I go to add more items to my itunes or iphoto (both applications I put on the external hard drive) it keeps saying there is no more room on your disk. So I think it is still trying to load it onto the startup disk instead of the external hard drive. Please advise on how I can get this to run through the external hardrive. thanks!!

It is likely that after you copied your photos and video to the external hard drive, you neglected to then erase them from your internal hard drive. Take those files and put them in the trash. Then empty the trash. This should free up your disk space.
It is not recommended to run applications from an external hard drive, as whenever the operating system needs to update those applications it will not be able to find them.
    Best of luck.

  • Transferring applications between two Macs in different locations?

What is the easiest way to copy an application between two Macs? I originally installed a graphics program on my old eMac G4, then used the Migration Assistant to transfer it to my new iMac G5. I then reinitialized the old G4 and didn't bother to reinstall the graphics program, but now I would like to have it on this machine as well and I can't find the original install disk for this application. Complicating matters is that the machines are now in two different places, one at home, one at work. This is an expensive program, so I would hate to have to buy another copy and am kicking myself for not being able to find it. Thanks for any help...

If you can't find the original install disk for the program, contact the program vendor. Some may offer you a replacement disk for a nominal fee. And be sure to follow whatever license agreement you have for the purchase of that software. If it can't be installed at both home and at work, and you can't afford another copy of that program, you may want to seek a cheaper alternative.

  • Transferring applications from a computer to the iPod Touch

I recently did a Restore to move my iPod Touch from one computer to a new one. I've been able to synch my music and photos successfully. On my new computer, I purchased two applications. They appear in the "applications" category in the source pane OK, but they don't synch with my iPod Touch. Any suggestions as to how to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated.
Reply to the Forum or to [email protected]

You can choose the update option to sync from selected folders, however this will only go one level down. If the main folder you are syncing from has sub folders they will show in the box below "Sync photos from folder". For example you may choose to sync from My Pictures and inside My Pictures you have folders for different subjects. You can choose which of those subject folders you want to update to the iPod or you might want to make a folder in there especially for iPod photos. You can drag these folders into an order of your choice.
Here's a simple "How To" on downloading photos from a folder and sub folders on your hard disk to an iPod:
1 Create a folder on your hard drive to hold the photos you want on your iPod. Call it iPod Photos for example
2 Inside this folder create as many other folders as you want (or drag and drop existing ones from other locations on your hard drive)
3 Drag the photos you want from your usual picture folder into the appropriate folders you just created. (not necessary if you are using pre-existing folders already containing photos)
4 Open iTunes, select your iPod in the iTunes Source list.
5 Click the Photos tab and select “Synch photos from.”
6 Choose “Choose Folder” from the pop-up menu and select the iPod photos folder you created.
7 Choose the radio button "Selected folders"
8 Tick the folders you want to go on the iPod and click Apply
When you go to Photos on your iPod you'll see each of the folders you have chosen in the menu and you can choose whichever one you want to view.

  • Transfering Applications EX HD to iMac running snow Leopard

Trying to transfer some of my applications (MS Office, Adobe) from my external HD that was running moutain lion to my sons iMac running snow leopard. I tried copying then pasting but that doesnt seem to work.
Any help would really be appreciated!

Microsoft Office and most of the Adobe apps put parts of themselves in multiple places, so you normally have to reinstall them from the original installers. You can't just copy the primary app file and have it work. It is possible to copy all the pieces if you can find them all, but reinstalling is a lot easier.
    Regards.

  • Transferring Applications

    Hi
I'm Trading In My iBook G4 For A New MacBook Pro. And I Wanted To Know If There's A Different Way To Transfer My Apps (MS Office, Photoshop, Rosetta Stone, Blah Blah) Without The Time Capsule Backup???
Oh Yeah I Don't Have The Installation Disc With Me, Friends Borrowed Them And Never Seem To Return It, And I Tried Asking, No Luck. And I Know If I Had Both Laptops It Would Of Been Alot Easier, But I'm Trading It In....
    (Sad But Happy Face)

Easiest thing to do is use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to put a bootable backup/clone onto an external FireWire HD, ensure it can boot the iBook, and hook it up to the new MBP before you boot it for the first time, then use the migration assistant to transfer everything from the backup/clone. That's it.

  • Transfering application data

I have an iTouch and bought an iPhone 4 yesterday. I was curious if there is anyway to transfer the application data from the iTouch onto the iPhone, mainly because of personalized settings as well as progress and such on the iTouch I don't want to lose. I have the iTouch backed up (and i know the app data gets backed up with it) but I'm not too sure if I can restore the data from an iTouch over to an iPhone. Any help would be much appreciated!

it didnt ask me that but i restored it from the ipod touch and it worked but in the process deleted all the contacts I had inputted on Friday were deleted (since i had no contacts on my ipod touch). is there any way to specify what is restored? or is there a way to transfer my contacts onto iTunes, restore it, and then transfer my contacts back on?
or is my best bet to just re-input my contacts?
    thanks for the help!
