Transferring apps, data & settings between MBP

My Retina MacBook Pro is on it's way from China!
I have a couple of questions.
What's the best way to move my apps, music, photos, settings from my mid 2009 MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro when it arrives.
Once I have everything off my old MacBook Pro, what's the best way to clear it out so that I can sell or give to a family member?
My first thought on Q1 is to make a bootable backup with Carbon Copy Cloner to an external drive from my old MacBook Pro and then restore to the new Retina MacBook Pro.
Would this cause any problems? or is there a migration assistant that would move everything over.
For Q2, can I just format the drive in the old MacBook Pro and then run the Mountain Lion install up to the point of setting up iCloud?  Or is there a better way to do this?
Thanks!

  • Transferring apps/data/settings in Tiger upgrade

My iBook (which was running 10.3.9) is in for repair at the moment. When it comes back it will have a brand new hard drive (80GB) and 10.4.7 installed.
Could you advise me on the best way to restore all the apps, files, settings etc? Virtually everything that was on the old internal drive- plus a bit more - is cloned on an external, Lacie firewire back-up, making about 60GB in all.
I want to make sure it's a good, solid upgrade - so any recommendations/step-by-step advice would be much appreciated!

    Hi, conran.
If you have a true "clone" (bootable duplicate) of your original hard drive on the LaCie that was made with a proper Backup and Recovery Utility, and the LaCie is a FireWire drive, then you'll want to use the Setup / Migration assistant to restore your former accounts, apps, data, preferences, etc. from the clone to your iBook and its new hard drive. This approach can copy everything from the clone except the OS, and, as you note that your iBook should return with a fresh copy of Mac OS X 10.4.7 installed, you don't want to overwrite that by "cloning the clone" back to the iBook using the Backup and Recovery utility you employed to make the clone.
See "Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Transferring data with Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant FAQ." See also this page describing the new Setup Assistant.
In this case, you'd connect — via FireWire cable — and power-on the LaCie to your iBook. The iBook will probably start up to the Setup Assistant. Select "Transfer information from another Mac" when prompted. Then (here's the trick), when prompted for "How you would like to migrate?" select "From another volume on this Mac." In the next window, select your LaCie FireWire drive. Then continue to follow the prompts.
As FYI, if it does return with 10.4.7 installed, be sure they include a copy of the Tiger Install DVD. Otherwise, you won't have a bootable disc from which you can run Disk Utility, presuming the install discs that came with your iBook have Mac OS X 10.3.8 or earlier on them. See: "Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes."
    Good luck!

  • Will app data update between devices?

I just got my new Ipad.  I have an Iphone4.  I got the apps installed on my new Ipad that I wanted.  My question is now using these apps. I have a diet app that logs my food intake and such.  If I use and update this on my iphone will that updated info get pushed to that app on my Ipad and vice versa? And what about game data?  Seems I have to start over on levels in my games.
Im also a bit confused about the icloud backup and tried doing the Itunes wi-fi sync which never worked.  I still had to connect with the cable in order to sync even though the box to sync to wi-fi was checked.

This is the way that I understand iCloud syncing to work.
App data from apps that support iCloud will update on all devices. For example, the Apple iWorks apps, Pages, Numbers and Keynote will update across iDevices. App developers have to make their apps "iCloud ready" in order for the seamless syncing of app data. Calendars, bookmarks, Notes, Reminders will sync currently as well. Your game is not "iCloud ready" at this point - is my assumption.
As far as the wireless sync is concerned, sync again with the cable and then after you sync, select the Wifi option in the summary tab of iTunes and then click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes and then see if you can sync via WiFi.

  • HDD broken, how can I restore my iTunes (app, data, settings...)?

    Hello,
My HDD is broken, I will change it and I have to reinstall iTunes on my computer.
I use Windows XP Pro (sorry!) and I can access to all data which were on my old HDD (I did a ghost before the crash).
Could you tell me which is the best way to restore all App and Data which were in iTunes?
    Thanks a lot,
    Chris

Drag the folder \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes on the ghost drive to your current drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it there. This will restore the content of the iTunes library, including playlists and other metadata, but not your preferences.

  • Transfering library DATA to new MBP- Help!

    Hi Folks,
For the last few years I've been using a PC, with all my music on the internal hard drive, and external hard drive on which I backed all the music up onto incase the PC went belly up. My itunes library always accessed the files on the C drive.
Now I have a shiny new MBP and I want to add the music on the external hard drive (which seems to be read-only when connected to the MBP, any idea's why?) to my itunes library, but I want to retain all the information from my original library on my PC's C drive (particularly as I only have about half the songs "checked" for syncing with my ipod, more on which in a sec!).
So I copied the itunes library data files onto the new MBP, but as I expected, when it loaded up the info (with the external hard drive connected) the original library mapped all the songs to the C drive, leaving the grey ! mark next to all the songs. And if I add all the files to itunes by dragging the folder from the external hard drive into the itunes window, then I'm left with a duplicate of every song, of course without any corresponding data (e.g. checked, last played).
Thus the question is, how do I import the songs on my external hard drive into the library, as well as all the library information from my PC? (and also, why is the external harddrive read only?)
This is my first Mac, so please be gentle!
    Much appreciated,
    Daniel

Not sure I am sending to the right person, but I want to back up my library/songs, video to an external hard drive. the back up process in iTunes seems to only want to back up to a disk. I'm sure I could drag and drop from itunes to the external hd, but is there a better way?
finally, looking for a process to follow when adding new music to itunes and copying to the external hd.
    any assistance would be appreciated.

  • Transferring Preset Print settings between computers using indesign

Ok so I just got a brand new macbook pro that has the latest os x 10.5.7, and I'm using it at work. I need to print files off of indesign in a specific way that my computer doesn't know how to. One of the work computers has been setup before and i need to transfer the presets from that computer to this one. I've tried replacing my com.apple.print.custompresets.plist file and that didn't work. Then i called applecare and they said transfer files from the hidden folder etc. I copied the ppd folder and the two files right below it which were printers.conf and printers.con.O, and that didn't work either. So finally i tried to save the preset settings directly from indesign by going to print presets/define/save, then i put that file on my computer and tried opening the file as a preset setting but it said that indesign cannot locate the ppd specified by the preset. Any ideas?

I haven't tried to install a postscript printer on a Mac in over 4 years, so I'm pretty rusty, and I honestly don't know how to check what driver is in use, but I suspect you don't have the postscript driver installed.
But to do what you want is more than just picking the correct print driver. Somewhere along the line you need to impose the booklet. I don't know the printer, but I imagine the controller has some some sort of imposition function built in, along with controls for the finisher.
I've just been on the Konica Minota site and it looks as if the PS drivers were issued for OS 10.4, but all they have for 10.5 looks like a paper size patch. You should probably call KM cutomer service (or your vendor) to see what you need to do to get it installed correctly.

  • Data streaming between server and client does not complete

Using an ad-hoc app, data streaming between server
and client does not complete as it supposed to be.
The process runs well in solaris 5.8, however under 5.9
we have found the characters stream buffer length limitation
is around 900 to 950 characters (by default we are using 3072
    characters).
    Example:
    - We are transfering HTML file, which will be displayed
in the App client, with buffer=3072, the HTML only displayed / transfered
as xxxxxxxx characters, but with buffer=900 the HTML is displayed properly,
in this case, the only problem that we have is the file transfer will
    eventually longer than usual.
    - There is another case, where we have to transfer information (data) as stream
to the client. A long data stream will not appear at all in the client.
Any ideas why the change between 5.8 and 5.9 woudl cause problems?
The current app-driver that we are using is compiled using Solaris 5.6,
if possible we would like to have use of a later version, which is compiled using Solaris 5.9, do you think this will probably solve our problem?
    Thanks

  • Upgrading HDD on new MBP 15" and transfering all Data and settings from 2011 model to 2012 one

    Hi all,
I have just purchased a new 2012 MBP 15" (Non-retina) machine as well as a hybrid 750GB drive from Seagate and 16GB RAM upgrade from Crucial. Both machines are running the latest versions of Lion. What I would like to do is the following:
Upgrade the HDD & RAM in the new 2012 MBP - I think it is the same procedure as the 2011 model (which I have already done using Carbon Copy Cloner)
Transfer all the data, settings, programmes files, docs etc to the new 2012 MBP and new drive
Q1. Would I have to clone the current HDD in the 2012 MBP with the new hybrid one first and then install into the machine before transferring the data from the 2011 machine?
Q2. Or - Could I just clone the current HDD in the 2011 model using CCC to the new Hybrid HDD and then instal it into the new 2012 MBP?
Whats the best and safest way to achieve this please? Any advice very welcome!
    Many Thanks

So, everything went fairly well. It started out looking like it was going to take 2.5 hours, but it ended up taking about 5-6 (I think - I went to sleep).
A couple of observations - at first I didn't see where it restored everything, but I later saw that when I logged out that it had created my user account as a separate login.
Some things didn't transfer - most everything did, but there were a few things with my Parallels VM that did not. I have to get to the bottom of that. It did make me re-register once I launched it.
    On the hardware specifically:
    1. I am not yet noticing the performance bump that I thought I would going to the i5 processor - seemed snappy when I first had it on with OS only - but so far not noticeably faster than my Core 2 Duo 2.4.
    2. battery - way too early to tell, but I am hoping the battery needs time to condition itself and figure out who it is (battery life was my #1 reason for buying this) - right now I am on battery power and have 79% remaining or 2hrs. 2 hours??!! This is supposed to be a 8-9 hour battery. Hoping time works this out. Brightness if only up about 20%, on wifi, keybaord backlighting fairly dim. Nothing coming over from my old machine would have affected this, would it have? (I do know that when the machine was empty with just the OS on it, it was reading about 8 hrs remaining). So much for living on the edge and going to the office without my power adapter today.
    3. Heat - my 13" was not hot on the bottom - this one is - on the back left part of the unit. Reminding me of my Powerbook G4. Not very lap comfortable. ??
    Any thoughts?

  • How to transfer app data between two different game center accounts?

Hello, I really need some help.
I have looked all over the web for ways to transfer apps between two different game center accounts and different devices. Several weeks ago I started playing Campus Life on my relative's Ipad 2, therefore spending many long hours to get to this point in the game.
The problem is I just got an Iphone 5 and I really would like to transfer the data onto it, so that I would not need to start all over again.
My grandma has an account (Game Center) onto which the data has been saved and I would like to have it stored onto mine. On some forum someone said to sign into the account which has the data on both devices and to then open up the game on the new device. It worked. Then I signed out and logged in with my own account- the game started from scratch. I panicked. I went back on the other account, and the data reappeared. I have been going back and forth, the game changing as many times. I thought it would ask to back up my grandma's data on mine but I was wrong. I can not seem to save the game onto my new account, and I have even tried to back it up to Itunes and then copy it onto my phone after having signed into my own account. And I don't know how to properly use Icloud. I am a mess. I am completely lost and have found no help on the web. (All people seem to have to deal with is sharing Apple IDs with different Game Center Accounts for the kids and transferring apps from one of their devices to another.)
I am so worried I am going to mess up and will lose the whole thing completely.
I have just started another game with my own account but since I am using my grandma's, the data is erased. It's one or the other but I definitely prefer saving Campus Life. I do not like the idea of having to only pick one.
I do not know any technical terms, so if you understand or even have the slightest clue about what I am talking about, I applaud you.
This seems like mission impossible, so if anyone can help in any way, I would be really grateful.
Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts!

I meant to press on "This solved my question"... Sorry if you needed the points.
Thank-you and I will just go back and forth between the accounts.

  • Can one Sync select apps data from say a desktop G5 to a MBP?

I was wondering if iSync has the ability to sync certain apps data between a traveling MBP laptop and my everyday home desktop G5?
For example, I want to just sync very specific things like:
-my Captain FTP data so I can keep FTP data current on my laptop as it is my desktop where I mess with it most
-1Password data so my updated 1Password access data from my daily desktop can get sync'd over to a MBP
    -Entourage User Identity "database"
these are just examples and I am not even sure iSync is designed to do this type of sync and, can you even select what it syncs?
if not, any other ideas other than just manual slow carry-over via target Disk Mode.

No, iSync is only for syncing Contacts and Calendars between Address Book / iCal and non-Apple mobile phones.
Google "ChronoSync" for something that may do what you want.

  • Does the "Reset All Settings" option delete app data?

I have upgraded from a 16GB iPhone 4S to a 64GB iPhone 6. I restored my new phone from a backup of my old one just so I could transfer app data from one app. All went well with that, but now the app is sending notifications that I can no longer progress because my phone lacks storage space. That may have been true for my 16GB iPhone, but now I have over 43GB of free space on my new iPhone 6, and it's still telling me I'm out of space. I'm thinking this has something to do with the "settings" of my old 4S being transferred in the backup I made. I am willing to try a Settings Reset if and only if it will not affect app data. If it does, what other methods do you suggest to convince my iPhone it has ample storage space?

Reset All Settings does not delete app data. It DOES reset your home screen layout, however, plus any default settings that you have changed.

  • HT1296 was using my daughters itunes account and now have my own. If I "erase and sync" will I lose my data from my purchased games? I have transferred apps and backed up to my computer.

One computer iTunes can support multiple Apple IDs.  One iPod can also support multiple IDs.  Don't do an "erase and sync."  Simply add your Apple ID to the computer's iTunes and to the iPod.  The only nuisance is app updating, especially if you do the updates from the computer, rather than from the iPod.

  • Transfering apps and the data on them from an itouch to an iphone

How can i transfer the data from apps to the new iphone i got from my ipod touch.

    1. Make sure all the apps have been transferred to iTunes. (iTunes File menu > Transfer Purchases.
    2. Make a backup of your iPod Touch. (The app data is stored with the backup).
    3. Restore your new iPhone from the backup if your iPod Touch.

  • All photos, videos, settings, and app data gone after IOS5 upgrade

Ive lost all my settings, photos, videos, emails etc. I had created a back up as always since I'm paranoid about loosing my info. My contacts remain thankfully but all my apps have been rearranged into completely random orders. I can't find some apps unless I put in a search for them.
Synching seems to do nothing to help the situation. Where could all of the data in my apps have gone? Why is it so randomly thrown on my iPhone? Anyone else experiencing this?

Go to iTunea>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backupright at the time you did the update. Then try restoring from that backup. If the apps are in your iTunes library, any app data will be restored to the iPod.
When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode). iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups.
Therefore, remembe the passcode that you enter this time.
It appears that if you restore from a backup, that backup is not subseqyently overwritten by the next backup.
