Transferring AVCHD files from SDHC card info on desktop

I have transferred a number of SDHC card data onto my desktop or External Hard Drive. Once opened the folder gives three new folders: DCIM, MISC & PRIVATE. PRIVATE contains the video info and breaks down again to folders AVCHDTN, BDMV & IISVPL.
BMV contains CLIPINF, PLAYLIST and STREAM.
STREAM seems to contain the individual video files (shots) and has the .MTS termination in the file name and are called QuickTime Player documents and of significant size.
How can I read, transfer or convert these files so that I can use them on FCP 6.
When I leave the SD HC card in the camera I can do a log and transfer quite simply. But when the same data is copied onto the desktop or External disk, I cannot access them...
Why is this and what is the solution?
...so that I can free up mu now many SDHC cards
Thanks

thrillcat, yer a star ...as we say in Ireland.
I've already been doing the named folder thing for months in anticipation of a solution, without knowing the mistake I was making in selecting downstream folders rather than the full SD folder contents.
My 1To ext is reaching capacity, so I was about to buy another to relieve the pressure.
I will still do this, but can now erase converted (heavier) files used for edits, now I know I can keep and access the original (lighter) SD folders should the need arise.
The hierarchy view option is excellent. Thanks. I hadn't spotted the folder option.
Will also attempt the erase option because that can be useful to have a tidier choice of clips.
Thanks again for this very useful advice.
Incidentally, one other question: are there (calculation?) files that are created than can be erased once an edit is done? ...again to gain memory space and limit clutter?

  • Quality Loss when transferring AVCHD File from Flash Card to iMovie

I have a Canon HF100 and the HD video looks great when I play directly from the video camera to the television. However, there is a loss in quality when I import to iMovie 08 and play the HD video on quicktime. How can I prevent the loss in quality so that playback on my iMac equals playback directly from the video camera to the TV?

First, be sure to import at "Full" 1920x1080.
Second, when you "Share", pick "Share"/Using Quicktime. This will let you customize settings. In Quicktime Settings, pick AIC with an unlimited data rate. For a smaller file, you can also try h.264 with an very high data rate.

  • Problem transferring MOV files from SD card

I have HD video on SDHC cards recorded on the new JVC GY-HM100U. This camera records in a native final cut pro codec that can drag and drop to a hard drive for editing.
My problem is that I am having an inconsistent experience getting the files from the SD cards to my hard drives. I generally transfer via my express slot with a card reader. Sometimes it works great and other times, my laptop dismounts the drive and I get the following error...
"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in " " could not be read or written (error code -36)."
I have also used a USB card reader with my desktop and that usually works fine as a workaround, but not today. There seems to be no common denominator when the problem occurs.
Anybody know what my problem is?
    thanks,
    mvw

Sorry, I did not see some of these responses until now. Unfortunately, I have not used the new camera since these problems. I actually got a new camera to replace the original. I spoke with a guy at JVC regarding some imaging issues I was having and he assured me they were not normal, so I got a new unit.
Aside from the issues I've had, I find the functionality and the performance of the camera to be excellent. looking forward to putting it through more paces.

  • What trick to get SD card reader to read jpeg files from SDHC card

I need to be able to read jpg files directly from SD HC cards into the iPad. This is not working. I have tried bunches of things. The card clearly contains 164 files. The iPad just cant see them... What things can I try to make the card visible to the O/S?

OK, I found the actual problem. SDHC cards do work. The problem is the file naming convention. MAC requires the old DOS 8.3 format. in other words the file name MUST BE XXXXXXXX.jpg (eight characters or less, no special characters. just letters and numbers) followed by a period, followed by a 3 letter file descriptor. Those file names work fine. without the whole ball of wax, NO GO.

  • Mac bleeps or beeps when transfering AVCHD media from camcorder

    Hi all.
I am using the log and transfer process in FCP 6.0.4 to convert AVCHD files from a Canon HF100 camcorder into ProRes 422 clips. The process is working fine but the internal Mac speaker is emitting long bleeps/beeps every 2 seconds while it is doing it. If I pause the conversion the bleeps/beeps stop. Start it up again and the bleeps/beeps return.
The audio and video is playing perfectly on the transferred clips
Anyone with any ideas what the problem could be?
    Many thanks

Finally I have discovered a way to get round the bleeps. Copy the entire folder structure from the AVCHD card onto the Mac hard drive into a new folder.
In log and transfer navigate to the "Private" folder, just one step in from the host folder. Click on open and the file structure will be recognised and the clips shown in the list.
Add the selected clips (or just part of a clip) to the Queue and they will automatically start to transfer, with no annoying bleeping.
Therefore I believe the bleeping is a warning against removing either the camera or external media during transfer, and the system is not concerned when it comes from an internal drive.
I hope my experience will help others.

  • Will bios boot from SDHC cards?

I'm trying to put an Arch Linux install on a 32GB SDHC card. I'm able to install the required files, but for whatever reason I can't get the SDHC card to show up in the boot menu, and UEFI doesn't seem to work. Of course, I haven't had any luck with UEFI booting on the W530 for some reason. I can get UEFI to work fine on my desktop, but no luck on the W530 from regular hard drives or my SDHC card.
Will the W530 recognize and boot from SDHC cards that have GRUB installed on them? So far I've had no luck with that. The card never shows up in the boot menu. I can't even get it to boot installer images. Booting from USB works just fine.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The SDHC reader on thinkpads is attached to the PCI Bus. Makes for faster Read write, but kills booting from it.

  • Is the AirPort Time Capsule only for backing up Macs or can I back up additional files from SD cards too as if it were an external hard drive?

I'm a professional photographer and I'm interested in the most recent features of the AirPort Time Capsule. I process a lot of data and much of it never hits my Mac hard drive. Currently I back up to external hard drives, but is it possible to back up files from SD cards mounted on my desktop on to the AirPort Time Capsule for instant access in the future as if the drive were an external hard drive (in addition to being a back up server)?
    I appreciate input!

If your question is whether Time Machine can back up the data on the SD drives, the answer would be no.
The reason for this is that SD drives are formatted in Windows FAT16, which is not compatible with Time Machine, the backup application included with Macs.

Got a new external hard drive. Transferred all files from old hard drive to new hard drive. Connected hard drive to macbook. How do I get all my files to be recognized by iTunes and my already made playlists??

Trying to download photos from IPHONE, IPAD to IPHOTO in IMAC after installing new hard drive.
How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

  • I transferred PPT files from a windows based pc (microsoft PPT 2003), at first my macbook was able to run all animations in file, after some time it stopped running it, partly because i "switched on" something since this is my first time to use a mac ?

i transferred PPT files from a windows based laptop to my macbook, at first it was able to run the animations in the file no problem, its my first time to use a mac also bythe way, so i started downloading freebies like the VLC, FLIP4MAC, and other plug-in players, would it be because of this downloads that my mac now cannot seem to run the powerpoint animations any more ?

I don't think vlc would affect powerpoint.  What were those "other plug-in players" you downloaded?
I'm not that familiar with powerpoint so how are those animations played?  Are they windows media player files?  If so then flip4mac might affect them.

  • HT2518 If I am transfering my files from pc to mac, do I need to make sure the appropriate programs are already installed on the mac before or after the migration?

Just bought a Mac Book Pro w/Retina display.  Will be transfering all files from my pc to the mac.  Also will be installing Paralles and Windows 7 to run quickbooks.  At what point do I do the data migration?  Install the software that I need first and then copy the files?
Any help on this would be appreciated!

Install the software then migrate the files. Documents can't be opened without the software on the drive.

  • How can I access video file from sd card on ipad2?

How can I access video file from sd card on ipad2?

Your iPad 2 will see the video if:
It's in a DCIM folder on the top level of the card (which is how most cameras do it)
It's name is 8 characters, no more, no less (CKDI9483 for example)
It's a format that the iPad will play
I've made mp4's of things, folderized them right and named them 'right' and can transfer them to my iPad, so you can use a computer to make the files conform to what the iPad will see.

just transfered M2TS files from PC to new mac, not able to run them in final cut? any ideas?

FCP doesn't like mpeg2 transport streams. You might give ClipWrap a chance to do the conversion. They have a free trial. If it works, the full version is something like $50.
    Good luck

  • HT1379 Summary: how to transfer files from SD card when the system (Mac OS X v 10.7.5) will NOT recognize SD cards.

How to transfer files from SD card when the system (Mac OS X v 10.7.5) will NOT recognize SD cards?
    Insert the SD card.
System opens iPhoto with SD contents.
Want to transfer files from SD card to system drive.  iPhoto closes
SD card directory removed from the Finder window and is not available again.
I don't want to have to reboot the system every time I want to perform this option.
    What's wrong here.
The support columns show this isn't an isolated incident with all sorts of solutions possible.
This is a simple task - there should be a simple method for the system to recognize SD cards.
    What's the answer?
I've reviewed a recommendation to reset the SMC.

When I plug in an SD card, the finder window shows it under the DEVICES section.  At this point, I can drag the contents to the hard drive.  However, when I screw up and click the character on the right side of the name - it apparently closes the SD card and I can't find any command to reload or re-recognize the card.  I have to remove and reinsert the card and then sometimes it recognizes the card.  Other times I reboot and it will recognize it.
What does that character on the right side of the SD card name do?  Is it an eject function - with no way to subsequently reread the drive?
It ejects or unmounts the card. When the SD card mounts click on it once to highlight it and then drag the files shown within it to the new folder.
