Transferring data from crashed pc to new MacBook Pro Retina

I am trying to transfer data from back-up discs from my old pc to my new MacBook Pro.  I have a USB superdrive and have inserted the first backup disc but the Macbook does not seem to be responding.  I am trying Migration Assistant but it is stuck on the 'Looking for source' screen.  Does Migration Assistant work for a pc backup disc?  If not, how should I go about transferring the data without having to do it file by file?  I also have the pc backed up on Carbonite but they will only transfer the data to a new pc and not to a mac.  Help!

Hi nickih64,
When using the Migration Assistant to move data over, there has to be a computer that has be working as Windows version of Migration Assistant needs to be installed and running to make the connection. You would need to have that working or from your back up disks, drag and drop over the information that you want on your MacBook Pro.

Time Machine or other disk (Target Disk mode makes it look like an external HD).

  • HT4527 "transferring purchases" from iPhone 5 to new MacBook Pro

A week ago I busted the screen on my former Toshiba PC laptop.  I freaked out as it's only 4 months until our wedding day and all our wedding stuff was on that computer, including all our ceremony music.  I purchased my new MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display and received it yesterday.  I followed all the instructions to transfer purchases from my iPhone 5 to my new mac computer but only 9 songs transferred.  The original iTunes was on my Toshiba since 2009 when I had my original iPhone 3GS and after getting the new iPhone 5, all my songs carried over onto that phone.  Now I can't seem to get those songs onto my laptop.  There are over 1,000 songs but I'm most concerned with the ceremony playlists.  Does anyone know why only 9 songs transferred over? What can i do to get the music off my iPhone and onto my MacBook Pro without having to purchase all those songs again??  I authorized this new computer & I signed in using my Apple ID that I had previously on my former laptop....
    HELP!!!
    Thanks!

A busted screen does not do anything to the hard drive.
Pull it out and put it into an external hard drive case.
Then copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder on the old conmputer HD to /Music/ on your new computer.
    Launch iTunes.
That is all you will need to do.

  • Transfer iTunes Library and iPhone Sync data from old iMac to new Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I bought a macbook pro in September last year, previous to this I had an iMac. This has all my music and iTunes stored on it.
Is there a way to transfer my iTunes over to my new Macbook Pro and sync my iPhone as if my phone thinks it's the same computer, so I don't have to restore my phone or set it up as a new one.
    Thanks.

  • Transfer iTunes play count data from old laptop to new Macbook Pro

I have just purchased a macbook pro. Previously I had a Dell laptop running Windows 7. I had stored all my music on an external harddrive, I have successfully transferred my music to my new iTunes library. However, all the songs have no plays, is there any way I can transfer this data to my new macbook?
I also need to transfer iPad 4, iPod Classic and iPhone backups to the mac.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Also I would like to transfer all the data such as the start and end times for each song.

  • Can I retrieve data from crashed hard drive on MacBook Pro?

    Any help appreciated

First, get yourself an External Enclosure and a new drive that can be used eventually to place inside your MacBook.
Install Mac OS X on the new External and Boot from it. Now your Mac is operating again.
Later, you can swap the new drive with the old drive and get back your portability.
Mac OS X has over 250,000 files in it. Booting is very complex. Just reading a few files off your old drive may be relatively easy -- or may be completely impossible.
If you have a spare drive, programs like DataRescue may be able to grab a few files off it -- or maybe not.

  • Should I "restore" a new macbook pro retina from a time machine backup of old mackbook pro?

I'm considering buying a new Macbook Pro Retina. 15".
Now I'm using a 2007 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo MBP 15" running Lion.  It works fine most of the time. Occasionally an application will freeze and I need to force quit.
It seems like the most convenient option would be to restore the new machine from the last Time Machine backup of the old. The benefit is that I'd feel confident that all of my stuff is on the new machine. The downside is that maybe glitches that had developed in the current system over the ~5 years would be transferred over to the new machine.
Or I could make a fresh start with the new machine and invest the time needed to transfer over the iPhoto, iTunes libraries and Documents folder and reinstall all the third party applications. I have an external optical drive to use the installation disks where necessary. The benefit would seem to be that any glitches that had developed in the old system might be avoided. The downside is that this would take a very long time.
What's the recommened method of migrating from an old machine to a new one?

Instead of a restore from Time Machine, I would suggest that you use Setup Assitant that comes up the first time you start the new Mac.
Connect the TM drive to the new Mac before you power it up
Then when the new Mac asks if you wish to recover from an older Mac say yes
    Then select from Time Machine
This will keep everything in the system for the new hardware and bring over everything else.

  • I want to transfer all data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro. How do I do that?

My iMac's video card has died and I am told it is too old to replace.  They recommended transferring all my data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro.  They said attach a fire wire, and press "t' before the iMac starts up and then it will start in safe mode (or something like that).  But I don't know what to do next.  Can anyone help me?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you start up your iMac holding the T key, it will start up in Target Disk mode. In this mode, the iMac's hard disk appears as an external drive in your MacBook Pro, so you can access there and recover your data.
After starting in Target Disk mode, open a Finder window in the MacBook Pro and you will see the iMac's hard drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Select it, navigate through your folders and copy them to your MacBook Pro's hard drive.
You can also use Migration Assistant > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Also, when I view the files from the external hard drive, they show up as .nbz and are not recognized by any program on the Mac. Should I just abandon the hard drive option and start sharing files through the LAN approach?

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

after i have downloaded an album from iCloud to my new macbook pro. Itunes will only play one song at a time. If i hit the fast forward or back button will not do anything. I have to use the mouse to hit the next tidal in the album then hit play for it to play the next song. Or put it in the UP NEXT.

First, make sure these items have checkmarks next to their names in iTunes. Continuous playback only works on checked items. Itunes will play all checked items in a list whether or not they're from the same album.
If you see that nothing in your library is checked and you want to check everything, hold down Ctrl while checking an item. This checks everything.
Next, fixing the "1 of 1" problem is easily. Select all the tracks that make up the book/album. Let's say there are 15. Press Ctrl-I. Doublecheck that the album box is filled in with the name of the book, and if not, type it there. Enter "15" in the box for the total number of tracks. Click OK. Now all the items should be "1 of 15," "2 of 15," and so on.
