Transferring data from iphone 3G to 3GS + something that makes this complex

My father passed away this past week, and gave me his new iPhone 3GS to replace my current 3G model. Once I have AT&T switch me over to the 3GS phone, then I know I need to perform a restore back-up to transfer all of my data over. Hopefully that will be easy.
Here's my question: I want to transfer the apps that my dad had purchased over to my account as well. How can I do that?
Also, I'm currently using my business laptop as my primary iTunes, but I want t switch to my personal computer now and have my library and everyone on it. How can I do that?
Thanks -

really there is no changing your account in iTunes. All you need to do is authorize your new main computer for your account and your dads account (sorry to hear about your loss btw).

  • Transfering data from Iphone 3Gs to a computer

Hi, (this is my first post on these forums :P) how can i prevent itunes from deleting all my data from my Iphone. I heard that you can download some software, but is there an "apple way" of doing this.
By the way, I really love apple products but can someone tell me whats the logic of having an iTunes Store/App Store on the iphone and be able to download stuff if when you connect it to iTunes it eareses everything?

what about if i download some software? will it work?
    No.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize the computer with the iTunes account with iTunes that was used to purchase/download the iTunes content with the other computer. With the iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to file and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.

  • Trouble transferring data from iPhone 4 to Mac OS X 10.5.8

I borrowed my sister's old iphone 4 whilst i was travelling overseas. Her accounts were still on the phone and it was closed to her carrier so i had to unlock it and change settings around so that i could use my accounts.
Whilst unlocking it i backed up her phone on my iTunes located on my Mac OS X 10.5.8. Now that i am back from travelling, i want to transfer my 4hour voice memo, purchased songs on iTunes and iBook, any purchased apps and SMS/imessages to my laptop. I am giving the iphone back to her so if there i any way i can transfer the data without having to buy an application that would be helpful.
Sidenote: I'm not too familiar with iCloud but it is set to her account on the phone. If i delete her account and use mine what will get deleted?
After i get the data i want off the phone. How do i transfer the applications which i've backed up on my iTunes on my Mac back to the phone so i can give it back to her as received?
Any help would be much appreciated. I erased all of the music on my brothers itunes account when i transferred songs to my ipod so a little anxious about using iTunes.

It was locked to Vodafone Australia and i had to unlock it so that i could put an international sim card in it. Because i was running out of time, i went in-store and asked the Vodafone staff and they said i can unlock it using iTunes. I had to google the instructins however as i wasn't sure of what buttons to press. So i went home and went through the whole process only to have it fail at the very end. I went in-store and the staff showed me how to restore files back to my sister's phone and was finally unlocked.

  • Unable to tfr data from iPhone 3G to 3Gs

Iam trying to restore data from my old iPhone 3G (8gb) to the new one 3GS (32GB) but for some reason the progress bar doesn't move after reaching the halfway point. Iam using a windows xp notebook.
Is there any other way to get my contacts and the apps to my new iPhone?
    please assist!

We need to get your contacts & applications on your computer, where they properly should be, as the iphone is NOT a backup or storage device. I don't quite understand how you could be syncing, yet your contacts & applications aren't on your computer.
Supported applications for contacts, in Windows, are Windows Address Book & Outlook. I don't know what you use, but whatever one it is, put at least ONE contact in that application on your computer. It can be fake, doesn't matter. Next, disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected, under preferences, which is in the Edit menu.
Next, connect your old phone, iTunes running, DO NOT SYNC.
Next, make sure that on Info Tab, that you have a check in the box labeled sync contacts(whatever supported application), & all contacts.
Next, right click the phone in the device pane & select Reset Warnings.
Next, Store>Authorize this Computer(Make sure your computer is Authorized).
Next, File>Transfer Purchases(Your purchased apps & music will transfer to your itunes library.
Next, Sync. You should get a popup regarding your contacts, asking to merge or replace. Select merge.
Verify that your Contacts & Applications are on your computer and in iTunes. If they are, and they should be, connect your new phone & sync(or restore from backup) said contacts & applications to your new phone.
Normally, you would restore your new phone from your old phone's backup. However, in your case that backup appears to be corrupted. You can try again, the choice is yours. If you do, connect your new phone & select restore from backup. If it works, sync your itunes content & you're good to go. If not well..you'll lose any saved app data, sms, etc.

  • Transfering data from iPhone BACK to Mac

Hi. My Mac's hard drive recently crashed and everything is wiped out. I have a new hard disk now.
My question is: How do I transfer data FROM my iPhone... BACK to my Mac? I would like to transfer data from my iCal, iTunes, iPhotos and contacts.
Would appreciate some advice. It's been a very frustrating experience. I don't want to screw up and end up deleting all my data from my iPhone instead.

While I have read and checked, and looked into this topic, there
isn't a whole bunch of stuff that is easily found via online search
even if the search terms or words are changed around quite a bit.
For just moving iTunes music, that is easier than data; and I can
see the need to re-integrate data and your stuff back to a Mac
especially if you need to restore the computer, should it fail. The
items on an iPhone or iPod Touch, etc, would be essential to a
multi-tasking user who has a home base and needs to save and
use this stuff between several devices you have and own.
Most of the sync information on how to move stuff, tends to delete
the peripheral content from the iPod, iPhone, etc and sets them
back to some pre-used state or default initialization. There must
be some other way, that actually lets the user take control over
items so you can archive and restore, or reuse them in your Mac.
So, with the odds not looking good, on retaining content should
one go through with the often suggested sync or other wiping
results of attaching a Mac to a portable iPod, etc, be careful to
not do that unless you have that content somewhere else first!
Is there a way you could use a gmail account to save and move
items, perhaps if you can upload content there, it can be saved
into a computer via email (wireless, etc) and save it that way?
For the iTunes music, you could check into and see if this thing
called (iTunes, backward) may work. I have not read a lot about
it, though it has been around awhile. Not sure what else it can do.

  • Am i able to transfere data from iphone to ipad

I am planing to purchase a new ipad, and i want to transfere my content of the iphone to it.
Is it posible to do that through the PC, or the blutooth, without internet connection ?.

You can't do it via bluetooth, but you should be able to copy all your iTunes purchases from your phone to your computer's iTunes (File > Transfer Purchases) and then backup up the phone and restore that backup onto the iPad. A backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content and settings, so you need the apps on your computer's iTunes (e.g. via Transfer Purchases) for them to then be restored with their content.
The contents of the Music and Videos apps also aren't included in a backup, and neither are photos that were synced from a computer.

  • Transferring data from iPhone to new hard drive

If I get a new hard drive on my MacBook, how do I go about transferring my data on my iPhone to the new hard drive without losing the data?

    What data?
The iphone is not a back up device. Where is your back up? Using your back up is the simplest way.
If you have at least one unique contact and calendar entry in your computer, you should get the option to merge the data when you first sync.
You can transfer itunes purchases: File>Transfer Purchase
The other music and pics cannot be synced back to the computer -it is a one way sync -computer to iphone.

  • Transfering data from iPhone 4 to 4s

I had a disaster with my iPhoto library and am slowing recovering pictures which are now a huge mess. In the midst of this my new iPhone 4s will arrive today. My current iPhone 4 has a large number of pictures properly organized. My question is provided this phone is properly backed up, when I restore the new iPhone 4S will the pictures be transferred. I am concerned iTunes might rely on iPhoto to transfer pictures and if the iPhoto library does not have the pictures on my iPhone 4 they will be lost. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Transferring data from iphone to new computer

Please can someone help me and tell me how to do this?  i am only semi computer literate and have spent hours trying to work this out!  I still ahve my old computer but it is so ancient it cannot really be accessed successfully,
i have bought a laptop but need to transfer my iphone stuff onto my itunes account on my laptop but everytime i try to sync it just tells me that i can only sync with one computer at a time and i have no idea how to in effect de-register with the old one so i can successfully transfer all my phones into onto my laptop?
please can someone help me and prevent me going insane!

The iphone is not a backup device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old comptuer, to your new one.

  • Any way to transfer selected data from iphone to iphone?

is there any other way to solve this??

    Hi,
You can transfer the purchased content from your iPhone to iTunes as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
The other music would have to be imported into iTunes again. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1209 provides more information.

  • Question about tranferring data from iPhone 3gs to iPhone 4

I just had a couple quick questions about transferring data from my old phone from my new iPhone 4. The reason i am wondering is because i am worried about whether i will encounter any problems when doing so.
First off i have already sold my phone today, i reset all data and settings from the phone and gave it to my buddy so its gone. I did a full sync and backup yesterday so all the necessary files should be on my computer(windows 7). Now, im basically wondering if i will run into any problems if i restore my iphone 4 from a backup. My 3gs was running 3.1.2 on att. Now i know IDEALLY i would have updated it to iOS 4 before backing it up and used the newest version of itunes, but i did not. Does anyone think this will be a problem for me?
Now with that out of the way, my biggest fear is losing my old data(text messages and notes mainly because i am a pack rat for those type of things) so id like to be SURE that none of my old backups will be deleted in any scenario. The reason i dont just restore it right now is because i want my new phone to be as clutter free as possible. I am going to be putting on here only the apps that i used often and would basically like to transfer over the BARE minimum; texts, notes, and highly used apps... So i guess my main question is can you transfer over only certain things like texts and notes after setting up the phone as a new phone. And if i were to set up the phone as a new phone what would happen to my old backups? Would i be able to selectively restore?
Im afraid that it might not be a possibility to transfer only certain things even though it should be.. i should be able to select a text messages folder and put it on my new phone and be done with it... But anyway i dont want to rant. Can anyone explain to me how this all will work?
ULTIMATE GOAL: Transfer only texts, notes, certain apps(and their data) and NOTHING ELSE.
MOST IMPORTANT THING: Not losing texts and notes. I can deal with putting all the old **** on my new phone and cluttering/slowing it down if i NEED to.
Thank you in advance, sorry for the long post.

If the most important thing for you is keeping old text messages, notes, and voicemail, then you'll need to sync the phone from your existing backup. I know of no other way to access those items.
Once you have synced to the new phone, check that you have those items that were important. Then you can reconnect your phone to iTunes, and change the sync settings to remove the apps or other items you no longer want to keep on the phone.
iPhone backups are stored by iTunes; you can see them by opening your iTunes preferences, clicking on "Devices" and then looking in the window. You can delete old backups from here. I don't know how you can open/read the backups though.
I don't expect you'd have any problems syncing from your old phone's backup, but it's definitely an either/or situation. Since you got rid of the old phone already, it's too late to email yourself your notes, or copy the text messages. Your previous backup is your only solution.

Hook the phone to the computer, open the Computer icon and look for the iPhone folder. Copy the images. Not difficult at all. Sync your contacts with Outlook through iTunes. Not really so difficult.
