Transferring data onto iMac from external hardrive

I have all my data from my old Dell computer (which is not working anymore) on an external hardrive, how do I get the data onto my iMac?

If your drive has USB, you can attach it to your iMac and drag and drop the documents into the appropriate folders in your User Account.
If you are wanting to migrate contacts, calendars, bookmarks, etc...that will be more difficult.

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

  • Need info on Standard Web services to pull Order data in CRM from external applications

    Hi Gurus,
I have a requirement to pull Order data in CRM from external non-sap application using Web services. Are there any standard SAP provided web services to pull order data based on some input? If yes, can you provide me any kind of documentation related to this?
    Appreciate your help on this.

  • How can i transfer all my data 250 GB from external hard disk to MAC pro

How can i transfer all my data 250 GB from external hard disk to MAC pro

The simple answer is just connect the external hard drive and drag the files from there to wherever you want them to go. If you need to do something more specific, you'll have to provide more details.

  • Starting up iMac from External Hard Drive

I posted this yesterday in "using your iMAc section" as a reply to "HD not Mounted", but no answers, So I thought I'd try here.
First, My iMac HD is bad,(as per apple tech at the store) I think(Hope) I was able to recover all files and transfer them over(w/ Disk WArrior) to my new LaCie d2 Quadra HD. As I was already having issues w/ my iMac HD, When I first plugged in the Lacie I installed the OS System onto the Lacie HD
in My previous post in the other section I said after install, it resatarted up OK from External HD before I ran Disk Warrior. Well Honestly Now I can't remember if it did or didn't, I have had so many attemps at restarting and trying to recover stuff over the past few weeks every failure and success are just blurring together.
Anyway, Now I would like to restart from my External HD to verify that all files transfer over OK, before having my iMAc HD replaced.
I have tried from the start up disk and get the message (on a black screen""Unable to find driver for this platform" and "Back Trace Terminal-invalid frame pointer.
with the OS system disk installer it recognizes the LaCie Ext/HD, But I didn't want to go thru the Archive and Recover process again. I also tried to start up in Firewire mode (thought it would go to the item that is hooked up) but all I got was the firewire symble moving around like a screen saver
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I tried the Start/Option key combo, but it still wouldn't work. Went back to Apple store, they couldn't get it to start either and said that something in the Mac HD wasn't allowing the external to open. but he did hook it up to another mac and the files were there. So now they are replacing the HD and will make sure that external HD will boot up afterwards.
PHEW!!! Thank God for the Apple Care!!!
Thanks Very Much for the help

  • ITunes Music Folder will not play from external hardrive after setting the correct path

I've decided to try and create some more space for my music collection and decided to keep my entire iTunes library on a portable external hardrive. I researched how to do so online and was successful at first. I set the correct path from the advanced menu so that iTunes would recognize and save music to the folder on my HD. It worked fine last night, but today when I try and access it I get the, "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" error message when I try and play a song anywhere in iTunes. I then tried to import the library from my external hardrive and then everything was duplicated. I some how reversed the duplication by using time machine and then redownloading iTunes, which is a riduculous story in itself, but thankfully, I am back at square one.
I have over 24,000 songs with a majority of them rated as well as playlists I do not want to lose. I don't understand why it will not play the songs. Can anyone help me?

If you are going to have the library on an ext HD the transfer the entire iTunes folder. This way you capture all the files - not just the music.
Launch iTunes with the 'option' key down and follow the dialog - tell iTunes to open the iTunes library file on the ext HD and things should be ok.

  • FCP shuts down when I open my project from external hardrive??

    Hi,
Problem here. I am working on a large (yes, and important) project at work and it kept getting larger so I moved all my files for FCP and all my media to an external hardrive the IT guys gave me. I did this two days ago. Yesterday I got A LOT of work done on this project. Now, when I try to open up the project FCP shuts down 44% through "Reading Project" when I open my file.

  • Install on Imac from external DVD

    Hi
I have a 2.16GHz intel core Duo Imac running 10.6.5 and I seem to be having niggly problems with it ie plug-ins quit in Safari etc. I have done all the normal things to put these right but they have not worked. Someone on the forum suggested that I reinstall Snow Leopard from the original disk so I thought I would give it a try, but have the following problems.
    1. I am not quite sure how to do this without losing all my programmes etc. ie Quark, CS4 Creative Suite and many others.
    2. Because my Imac DVD drive will not eject DVDs I am using an external one Freecom DVD RW recorder LS pro external double layer DVD+/-RW/USB 2.0/Firewire/Lightscribe. I have it connected via Firewire. It will open the snow leopard disk but when I go to utilities restart I cannot restart from it. Perhaps I am being impatient but did not start after five minutes just blank screen and DVD revving occasionally. The 10.5 disk will boot the machine fine but not the 10.6.
    3. I have a much newer Imac on my network using 10.5. Is there any way I can use this to reinstall 10.6 on the older Imac if necessary?
    4. Would it make any difference if I connected the external drive using USB?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Chris

They have to be the same vintage to work over the network or otherwise.

Sounds like it might need a new clock battery or optical drive.
It should also have at least 1 GB of RAM.
How much free disk space does it have, and how big a hard drive does it have?
    4. Would it make any difference if I connected the external drive using USB?
Usually Firewire boots faster. I think the problem is the clock battery is getting old. Boot times may have problems once the machine reaches 4 years old, as then the clock battery gets weak and can't tell it how to boot things. This may also explain the optical drive failure.

  • Isync transfers data to Ical from Nokia 5800, but not the other way round

When I sync my Nokia 5800 using Isync, diary entries from my phone are moved onto my Mac, but entries made on my Mac are not transferred to my phone. This leaves my phone calendar without any entries. Am I doing something wrong here, or is this a bug? Does anyone know how to transfer this data back into my phone? My contacts swap both ways no problem. I have installed the Nokia 5800 app. Many thanks.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. As the Nokia 5800 is not natively supported by iSync you must be using an iSync Plugin, so I'd advise contacting the author of the plugin - it may be buggy and need fixing.

  • Running dead iMac from external SSD?

After watching a video on how to install an SSD in my early 2008 iMac, I bought an external USB enclosure  and opted to simply boot off it, using my iMac's internal drive as a backup. This has worked great for more than a year. But last week, after 5 years of yeoman service, the internal drive died. The iMac still boots up fine off the external SSD. I would just like to know if there's any reason I shouldn't continue to use the iMac in this fashion. Any comments or advice  appreciated.

Just tried to boot the newly cloned external SSD. Pressed the option key on startup to bring up the startup disk icons. Just got a gray screen. Did a hard shutdown, disconnected the two SSD's. Waited. Reconnected everything. Tried again. This time one SSD icon of the two came up but nothing happened when I clicked on it. Shut down again. Zapped the PRAM. Booted again. This time I got both SSD icons. Yay. But the cursor wouldn't move nor would the arrow keys do anything. Boo. This time I disconnected the SSD's and pulled the power cord from the back of the iMac. Waited a few minutes then reconnected. Booted again. Again got the single icon and the frozen cursor. I had the feeling that the dead (or almost dead) internal hard drive was somehow getting in the way of the startup process. I disconnected one of the SSD's and the remaining one booted fine. I re-connected the second one. It mounted. I opened up the Startup Disk Pref Pane. Only one of the SSD's showed up so I selected the one there. I re-booted & voila. All is sweetness and light. I think I'm going to have to open up the box and disconnect the comatose HD so I don't have to do this dance anymore.

  • Repeatly passing data to and from external program

I'm looking for some help to get me started.  I'm willing to bet
the info is here I'm just not sure what to look for and my searches
    aren't reveiling anwsers.
Background: I'm trying to take control of a device that is comunicating
through the PCI bus.  The device has a set of API dll's that I can
access through C++, but not directly in LabVIEW.  So wish to creat
a wrapper program that will give LabVIEW indirect access to the
    dlls.
Problem: I've breifly read up on CINs and Libaray call functions and
have found one underlying problem with both.  I have not found a
way to pass data back and forth between the external code and LabVIEW
once the external code is running.  I require an interactive
    conection between the two.
Any sugestions of what to search for would be greatly appreatiated, or even how to resolve my problem.
    Thank you.
    Don't get even, get odd!

If the data buffers are owned by the driver and are updated asynchronously, you should expose that buffer to LabVIEW as a handle (simple int32 for the pointer to the buffer). This can then be passed to the wrapper code and checked (implements your polling). Remember that handling tasks in LV that should run in parallel is different from C++ however - you don't create threads, instead you should simply set up independent loops.
I'm not sure what else to suggest since I don't fully understand what the API does or what the HW is doing, so feel free to post more information if you want more suggestions

  • Creating directory from external hardrive to a new copy of Itunes

Hi there, this is a little complicated so please bear with me. Not long ago, luckily after having consolidated and moved all my music onto an external hard drive, my laptop crashed and died. I am at the moment waiting for a new one and using a spair computer in the interim. I have downloaded the itunes program onto this spair computer and what i want to be able to do is create a directory on this spair computer to the hard drive so i can listen to my music without having to download it all onto the spair computer (which is really rubish and has a tiny hard drive). Is there a way of doing this? When the new computer arrives i will download it from hard drive but i don't want to do it on this. I would be extremely appreciative for any help!! Thanks, Harry

Start iTunes and press and hold Shift.
    Select *Create new library*.
    Select the external drive.
Now got othe external and move all the music into the *iTunes music folder* in the *iTunes folder* you just created.
In iTunes, select File -> *Add folder to library*.
Select the *iTunes music folder* in the *iTunes folder* on the external.

  • Restore iMac from external dvd drive

I'm giving my iMac to a friend. But my superdrive is is failing to read the restore disks, but not after wiping the HD.
Now my G4 iMac wont do a thing.
I had assumed that my external DVD drive would do, but it stops on the small mac icon and goes no further.
Is there a work-around I can do? You'd be helping a retired photographer to leave his ancient PC and give my gorgeous G4 iMac a new home. While I get on with my iMac 20' intel.
The G4 last run on Tiger.

Put the Intel into Target Disk Mode with the G4's installer disc in the drive.
[How to use FireWire target disk mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583] includes description of hardware and software requirements.
Boot the G4 while holding down the option key. If you're lucky the installer disc will appear as a boot option and you can reinstall the OS onto the G4's drive.
Oh, connect the two computers with a Firewire cable!

  • Boot iMac from external DVD drive

    Hi guys!
I need to boot my iMac to my system disc using an external DVD drive (USB).
I put the DVD in the drive and it shows up in Prefs as a bootable disc but when I select it and tell it to restart it gives me the error beep. I've tried rebooting and holding down "option" but the system disc in the external doesn't show up.
I'm on 10.3.9 on a 17" G5 iMac 1.8GHz. All ancient history I know but I really only use it for surfing the web and iTunes. I'm trying to upgrade to 10.5 but I need to get it to boot to the DVD drive using the original system disc first.
I've checked into firmware updates and done tons of searches but I can't see why this Mac won't boot from a USB drive. Am I missing something?
    Thank you!!

Intel Macs can boot from USB external drives (including optical drives) just fine. It's the older PowerPC Macs that usually need external drives to be FireWire, in order for it to be bootable.
You may want to look at Mac-oriented vendor OWC to see what they have

  • Trouble copying itunes music from external hardrive

ive just had a new hard drive installed on my laptop. i backed all my files to the external hard drive, and when i downloaded itunes, obviously none of my music was there. i have tried to copy it from the hard drive, but cannot do it? can someone talk me through it please??? i'm sure it's simple.....

Presumably you are going to rebuild your iTunes library on the new laptop. If this is the case, the location of the iTunes library (under Edit, Preferences, Advanced) will be C:\Users\[username]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music by default.
You then click "Add Folder to Library" from the File menu and then select the folder on your external drive where your music is stored. iTunes will then copy all the contents from the external drive onto your laptop. Depending on the size of your music collection, it can take a while for this to happen but you should see progress in the iTunes window right at the top.
If your external drive is connected via a network, rather than a USB2 socket, the process will take even longer.
