Transferring data to a New Hard Drive?

Is there a way to transfer everything from my Main Hard drive (boot volume, programs, plugins, etc.) to an external firewire drive and then back onto a new larger hard drive that will replace the old one with any certainty that it will work without data loss.
Here's the detailed story in hopes of clarifying the above.
I want to replace my Main Macintosh Hard Drive, the one with the operating system and all of my important programs with a 300GB ATA Hard Drive. I have all of the internal drive bays filled with smaller 160GB hard drives on my 1Ghz Dual PowerPC G4 mirrored door drive.
I am in the process of new iMovie projects and other things like Garage Band and need more hard drive space for some apps that need to be loaded on the booted volume of my main hard drive (like Garage Band).
Since I no longer have room to transfer data it looks like I will have to buy an external drive to transfer data. My biggest worry and fear is loosing my OS10.4.4 boot disk and some of the programs with all their plugins and preferences and whatever else that may not transfer correctly from the internal drive to the external firewire drive. I will then have to transfer everything back from the firewire drive to the new 300 GB Hard Drive without any data loss.
Is this possible? I've heard of cloning a hard drive onto another disc but I'm not sure if this will work or not. I can't afford to lose any of my programs, plugins or operating system. It would shut my wife's art business down.
Please help me because I'm stuck in not being able to really do any more work. I already had to move my iTunes and iMusic folder to one of the other Hard Drives and now about 200 of my purchased songs have to be manually found. What a pain!
Thanks for the guidance.

Hi Lou!
Yes, you can easily do what you want. Disk Utility has the capability of making a disk image that can be used to restore your system. However, I don't do it that way so I will recommend trying either Carbon Copy Cloner (my personal favorite) or SuperDuper (really, really easy). Either one of these programs will allow you to make a bootable clone of your drive on another disk.
Cheers!

  • When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?

My mac and I rely HEAVILY on the use of alias files and folders. The simple version of my question is: When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?  These are not symlinks or symbolic links, they're all alias files and folders.
Is there any software out there that might help me with a solution?  Are there any tricks or tips you can give me to try?

Use either Setup Assistant at first start, or Migration Assistant on subsequent occasions and all will be transferred intact. Given your wording I presume you are Unix savvy and will appreciate the problems that duplicate userids would cause, so of you use MA for the migration, make sure the target Mac has no userid equal to that on the source and you will be fine.
SA does not have these issues since it runs before any user account is created, so it can simply copy over everything. But MA runs after the fact and only solves the issue partially by changing the UID in the user directory, leading to permission problems.

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

  • How can I restore my iPod touch data to a new hard drive when the old one crashed

My computer crashed and I want to put the contents of my iPod Touch back on the new hard drive. How do I do this without accidentally Syncing and copying over my data? The vast majorioty of the music on my iPod is my own from DCs I own.

You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabilng the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Next, authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials.
If possible, either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.  To do this, right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering different software availbable to assist you with this task.

Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

  • I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • Transferring data from an external hard drive previously connected to a PC

I have an external hard drive that is loaded with data from it's previous connection to a PC. I would like to transfer that data to my new mac pro.
Is that possible and if so can someone give me a brief description of the steps to take.
    Thanks

It depends on the data - but all things are possible. I have data that goes back to Apple II days - and it has moved with me from Apple II to MS DOS to Mac OS 7 to Windows 95/98/2000/XP and then to OS X!
If you are using Word documents, Excel spreadsheets etc. then there will be no problems (other than minor formatting issues alluded to by another forum member). The only catch here is if you have encrypted a spreadsheet in Excel on the PC, the Mac version of Excel will not be able to read it.
Proprietary database structures (such as MS Access) are more difficult to transfer as there is no MS equivalent on the Mac (although FileMaker can import MS Access databases).
If you have Windows Address Book contacts and Outlook/Outlook Express emails, these can all be directly imported.
If you have WMV files (i.e. Windows Media Player), then you will need to download Flip4Mac to access them.

  • How do I get sync data from my mobile device to the new hard drive in my computer?

My hard drive crashed and I need to get my synced data back and the instructions for doing so aren't adequately explaining how to do so.
I have my mobile device in my hand, which has my Firefox data on it. I can't find the sync key. It is telling me to go to "sync options" on my mobile device, but that isn't available on my mobile device.
I just want to have my bookmarks. My hard drive crashed and I am having enough problems without not being able to sync my firefox data to the new hard drive.

    Hi!
You can recover yous Sync Key from your phone with this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/addon/aboutsynckey/
Install it in your phone so it can display your Sync Key (also know as recovery key).
Once you do that, follow this steps: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How%20to%20sync%20Firefox%20settings%20between%20computers#w_what-if-im-not-near-my-first-computer Set up Sync in your Computer with the Sync Key]

  • Getting old data onto new hard drive

I've backed up my current hard drive and I will be replacing it with a new one tonight. My question is once I do this, do I just plug in my external drive with the back up and then...? How do I get my old data onto the new hard drive? Thanks!

How did you back it up, Surfer?
If you "cloned" the existing internal to the external, using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, then you simply boot from the external drive, use Disc Utility to make sure that the new drive is formatted using the GUID partition scheme and HFS(extended) file system (and reformat it if it is not), and then clone back to the internal.
If you backed up using Time Machine or Disk Utility, then it will depend on what you chose to back up, but you may be best off re-installing the OS from your OS DVDs and then "migrating" the material from the drive (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 for some general information and links to other relevant material).
If you simply backed up data by dragging it across to the other drive then you will need to re-install the OS and applications from the original discs, set up a user account and then drag things back to the appropriate locations.
In all cases you should make sure that the drive is partitioned with the GUID partition scheme, and formatted as HFS(extended) first, though.

  • New Hard Drive - purchased iTunes are gone

Recently i had to have my hard drive replaced.. the guys from Best Buy's Geek Squad managed to salvage "my documents," which contained my iTunes music folder. When i transferred all the data to my new hard drive, the only music files that were on there were the ones i had transferred directly from cd.. all of my purchased iTunes are GONE.
Is there a way to get them back? I'm missing about 800 songs!! ..and there's NO WAY i'm paying for them all over again.
    Someone PLEASE help!!
    Thanks.
    Nicole.

If you have the My Music Folder, they should be there in your play list. Are you saying that these songs are not there? I thought that all songs get put into this folder. I would suggest looking again under compilations, etc. Secondly, there are some things that can be done to recover these songs from your iPod, but I don't have any experience in this and have no idea how to recommend that. You might try a Google for some help with this. Finally, buy a second HDD to back up your current HDD. It is absolutely critical. Best of luck!

  • Can't transfer data from one external hard drive to another?

I have just purchased my first Mac book Pro a few weeks ago and i seem to be having alot of trouble transfering data between my to hard drives.
One is a 500gb and the other is a 1tb both with movies and photos on them, i want to tranfer the last data from the 500gb to the 1tb and format the 500gb.
I have tried to drag and drop and copy and paste but nothing seems to work? The movies are in avi format too so not sure if that makes a differance or not but that is another issue i would like to sort. How to change the complete hard drive to mp4 or do i do them one by one?
Any help would be great as i dont want to regret this purchase so early in the piece.
    Thanks to all in advance.

    Yes.

  • Data recover from a hard drive error 301

Can anyone advise me of how to recover data from a hard drive error 301.  I have a pavilion dv7-4177 and i received the hard drive error code 301 two weeks after the warranty expired. I back up my data so I though but when tried to reload that data on a new hard drive it would not take. The damage hard drive will not load the OS now even in safe mode. Is there any way to retrieve this data from that hard drive.

    Hi,
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your files.

  • New hard drive, now what??

HELP!      Just had to have a new hard drive on the computer.  tried moving itunes........finally got the playlists/etc to work - but, I have many duplications of the playlists (manually deleted those already) and the "date added" is now a new date for every stinkin' song.
    a few questions:
***is it possible to have moved the file from old data file to new hard drive, import media into itunes and keep the "date added" that was originally attached to each song??  (or still do that???)
***also, after doing the reinstall and the importing media, I ended up with 3-4 copies of playlists when I opened up my itunes.  Manually deleted them, but wondering what I did to get them there in the first place.
***and, now that the songs are there - I can't edit anything as I was able to before.   Everything is "gray" and won't let me edit.  I tried following the directions (in forum) to change from read only but my computer wasn't agreeing.   any tips on how to do this??  the only thing that comes up when I follow the directions is "owner" - none of the other users on the computer.   Running Windows 7.
thanks - I appreciate the help - computers aren't my strong-point.  this is really frustrating!!

....Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. Use the Change Permissions... button grant to your account...
Do you get the Change Permissions button? Once you've done that there should be options to add additional users and adjust their permission levels.

  • Transferring Itunes data and Library to new hard-drive question

    Hello,
First I want to state that I made a mistake when I transferred my music to a new bigger harddrive. My bad.
I look here for some guidance, I read this article after the fact: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive so it was too late for me and I got these "!" signs on all my song. I have over 5000 songs (not including podcasts, movie and TV shows.
I tried to move my library (succesfully) in my new hard drive so I could keep my laptop clean of all music.
I though I will be clever and replace the target links into the "Itunes Library.xml" and "Itunes music Library.xml" files. Well not so clever because I still have the issue.
My question: Does anybody knows what else should be done to fix this issue (if fixable)? I would try to avoid linking all my music one at the time by using the "locate" function that ITunes pop up when you try to start a song.
It is also too bad that you must do it one song at the time, I calculated that if I do 20 songs a day it's going to take me 250 days and more...
Thanks for any idea/solutions you may have
    Thierry

I though I will be clever and replace the target links into the "Itunes Library.xml" and "Itunes music Library.xml" files. Well not so clever because I still have the issue.
iTunes does not use these files.
They are created only for other apps to access the iTunes library.
Does anybody knows what else should be done to fix this issue (if fixable)?
See this -> iTunes Track CPR v1.3
"This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx). Any correct files found will be added to iTunes and will replace the "dead track" in each playlist it appears in (except Smart Playlists). Most tag data will also be rescued."

Transferred backed-up data from external hard disk to new hard drive on my MacBook Pro which seemed to be successful. I now find that some (or maybe all) old emails have been resent. Can anyone tell me what has happened?

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Help with installing new hard drive and transferring data?

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch mid 2009 that is running OS X version 10.6.8. The hard drive is full and I have a new one I'd like to install, but I am awfly intimidated. I'm hoping that someone could shed some light on kindergarten-style step-by-step instructions on how to make the switch. I'm mostly concerned about the data transfer part. I've found a handy video about physically installing the drive, so I think I'll be ok there.
Here are the items I have in preperation for the switch:
    • 1.0 TB Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM Hard Drive
    • Portable bus-powered USB 3.0 storage solution (to turn my old hard drive into an external hard drive)
    • Tools including a small phillips screwdriver and some Torx Screwdrivers
    • Time Machine Extermal Hard Drive with all of my backups
Here are some things I have read that I find to be confusing
    • Some suggest I should transfer my data from the old hard drive to new new one BEFORE I install the new one. (I'm not sure how that works.)
    • Some suggest upgrading to the latest OS X before transferring any data. (Would that be Mavericks? I haven't upgraded to that yet. Is that necissary?)
    • Some suggest that I will need the MacBook Pro's installation disk to make the switch. (I don't know where that disk is. Do I really need it?)
If anyone can clarify any of the above issues that I've listed as confusing, that would be great. Also, if anyone can help me figure out what steps to do first, second, third, etc., that would be great.
    Thanks!

    Also,
Will I need the install disks for the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft office when I put in the new hard drive?
