Transferring data to new Intel iMac

What is the most efficient way to move files, iTunes music, settings, etc. from my current G5 to a new Intel based iMac? I'm thinking external hard drive but I might be missing something.
Thanks.

Yes, it will ask you if you have another Mac you would like to transfer data from - you will need a firewire cable. [Here's|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1554] some info from Apple.
Hope this helps,

  • Transferring data imacCRT to intel imac

Dear all, new to this and bit thick so please bear with me..
I have very tempramental old imac crt power pc G3 400 running os9.0 and new 20" intel imac os10.4.8. Old machine has 15gb of Quark 5 files and I have Quark 6 app on intel imac.
My external backup disk has dropped dead (clicky noises and nothing else).
How do I get files across to new imac and can I do with ethernet/firewire or something? (Migration Assistant tried but won't work with os9).
    Here's hoping!
    Thanks

Your machine should have version 2.4f1 or better from that article.
Now with all due respects, that machine is probably long over due for some critical firmware updates before it gets the chance to become a door stop if 10.2 or greater has its way.
I do not trust Apple / System profiler to properly confirm anything. Best is to follow instruction from the below link gathering up version and DATES.

  • Transferring Applications To New Intel iMac

Hey All, I just ordered my new iMac. I have been currently using the G4 Flat panel iMac which has continued to serve me well. I have Final Cut Pro that I want to put on my new machine but because of the new intel chips, I am not sure if I have to purchase the program again or what. I wouldn't think that I'd have to, I just want to find out if there are any general G4,G5, to Intel transfer issues in terms of software.

    Hello,
    hi, mytreeofthorns
    welcome to the forum
this is not an answer to your problem, sorry for this, but i'm sitting with the same question: i want to by an intel mac in addition to my iMac: can I use my "old" software such as "MS Office" and others? From other posts here i understand that it will work ("Rosetta" seems to do the job behind the screens), but it might be somewhat slower. The advice I've seen is, to buy sufficient RAM.
Did I get it right? Perhaps someone with experience can confirm before I spend my money.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Help, Kernel Panic transferring HD to new Intel Imac

My Imac 500 has a Kernel Panic error and I will need to get my files to my new Imac Intel. Can I do this without resolving the Kernel Panic error? Will my Intel Imac see the HD on my Imac 500 while it is in this error mode?
    Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to use the Migration Assistant to move your user account to the new computer as long as there is no problem with the old computer's disk drive.
Shut both computers off and connect them via a Firewire cable. Boot the old machine into Target Disk Mode. After the TDM logo appears boot the new computer normally. The old computer's disk drive should appear on the new computer's Desktop. Open Migration Assistant (Utilities folder) on the new computer and use it to transfer your user account to the new computer.

  • Help transferring to new intel iMac

    Hello,
I will be getting a new intel iMac in the next week or two, to replace my failing revision A iMac G5. My problem is that the old machine will not be here anymore when the new machine arrives, and I want to make the transition as smooth as possible. I will have a complete backup of the G5 on an external firewire drive, and was wondering if I can use the migration assistant to update from there? Would there be any major problems with preferences that are transferred from the G5 to the intel? What are some of the problems, or quirks I should look out for? Will my Epson Stylus Photo 960 still work? I'm sure the HP Deskjet 970 Cse is no longer an option. Will M$ Office work ok in Rosetta? I know that FCEHD will need to be updated, but that's about all I really need to worry about right now, the kids games can be replaced/updated all in due time, (slowly.)
I know it's a bunch of questions, and I appreciate any and all advice.
    Thanks,
    Eric.

    Eric,
Surprise! both the Epson and the HP 970cse are on the list as having new universal binary drivers already installed inside the Tiger OS that will arrive on your iMac Intel.

  • When transferring data from my old iMac to a newer one do the old Apple apps like iWorks override the new versions installed on the newer computer?

When transferring data from an older iMac to a newer iMac (refurbished) do the Apple applications like iWorks replace the ones on the newer  computer?
I have read how to transfer data and using setup assistant but I am concerned about applications from Apple having the same names.

As you likely know legacy apps that are PPC based will not migrate over. However the data files will. I would urge you to inventory the apps you have and their data files to see how important they are and then look app by app to see what app replacements are available. If you are using Office for Mac prior to the 2008 version you will need to get a new license of the app because the 2004 version was PPC based. The files will come over and are readable by newer version of Office for Mac (I recommend the 2011 version) and also readable by the iWorks apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) but those are different apps than Office and work differently and do not have all of the features of the MS Office apps. This is really only a issue if you share files with MS Office users, if you use them for personal work then iWork may be just fine for your needs.

  • Transfering from G5 to Intel iMac

Hi everyone. My first post here. I have a 20" G5 based iMac I have been using for a bit. I am about to upgrade to 24" Intel iMac. Since I started using OS X, transferring data from one to another has been simple, just attach a firewire cable and good to go.
However, now I am moving over from PPC to Intel, I am faced with either using that method or fresh install to take advantage of as much Intel based software as possible. Main programs I am worried about are MS Office X and Adobe CS3 Premium. I also paid for a bunch of shareware as well. I am fairly certain that when I do the transfer, program does not install the Intel version unless it's Universal. Do some programs tell you to upgrade to Intel version when you run the PPC version? Many questions...
So, what is your recommendation? Fresh install or transfer then individually figure out which ones replace? Thanks much in advance.

    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi, just to let you know, I transferred by saving everything but Apps on an ext HD. Then transfering to my new intel, Apps are best installed from the CD-rom. Shareware Apps, go onto the site and re download, you should have the "key" backed up in your computer.
I used this method for Image Tricks and a bunch of others...In real estate the motto is, Location, Location, Location, with computers it's Back Up, Back Up, Back Up...L

  • Clarification on migration from iMac G5 running 10.4.11 to new intel iMac

    Hello,
Although a lot of you have already posted on this subject, I just wanted to get a clarification, please. I just got a new intel iMac and I would like to transfer all my files from my iMac G5 (10.4.11). Should I just use the Migration Assistant and that's it? Will the two OS conflict with each other? And also, is it possible to continue to use 10.4.11 on my new iMac?
Thank you very much! I hope Ms. Miriam reads this one. She seems to be very knowledgeable!
    -Pedro

    Not Miriam, but...
You can use Migration Assistant to go from a Tiger Mac to a Leopard Mac. You will be running the Migration Assistant utility on the new iMac. You might employ FireWire Target Disk Mode (on the old iMac) as part of the process, to connect the two Macs.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
A new iMac has one FireWire 800 port and no FireWire 400 port (which is the type on the iMac G5). So you will need to get a 9-pin (800) to 6-pin (400) adapter, or a cable that has an 800 end and a 400 end (if you want to use the FireWire method for connection). They are available here
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/FIR1369AD/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
You can also use a wired or wireless network connection between the two Macs, to do the data transfer.
And also, is it possible to continue to use 10.4.11 on my new iMac?
No. Macs can generally run the OS that came with it, or LATER (up to hardware limitations), but not earlier. So if the new iMac had 10.5.6 pre-installed, it cannot run any earlier version of Mac OS X.

  • Printing problems with HP laserJet 1320 and new Intel iMac

My new Intel iMac won't print to my HP 1320 from Eudora or from web browsers. The applications "quit unexpectedly". From Safari, nothing happens.
I can print PDF documents and Office documents with no problems. The Intel is connected to a router via Airport. The printer is connected to the router via Ethernet. My old G4 iMac prints fine (connected to router via Ethernet) as does my G4 laptop (connected via Airport).

A post from another threat that might help.

    Solution!!!
Just spent 90 minutes with some nice folks in level 1 and level 2 support.
Problem seems to be that I used migration utility to import the soul of my old machine into the new machine. When you do that, you bring along the old print system (PPC vs Intel).
I had upgraded to 10.4.5 after the migration and assumed that it would correct any problem like that, but it had not.
After a great deal of trial and error, the solution was to go to move disk/library/printers to the desktop and restart the system
Then use the the install disk 1 that came with the iMac and use the OPTIONAL INSTALLS package to reinstall the printer drivers.
    Worked like a champ.
Suspect similar problem might happen for any of you with I/O drivers.

  • My G5 iMac died how do I move  iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac

I was able to save the hard drive from my dead G5 iMac and it's now a bootable image on an external firewire drive.
How can I move all my iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac?
BTW from what I've read you shouldn't use Migration Assistant when moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac so I don't think I want to go that route.
Any ideas as to how I can do this and not lose all my iTunes that I bought?

    i think this should work:
    1) boot from the image.
    2) use these tips to move the library from the image to another external HD. from the iMac, use the +choose library+ operation below.
    or
    3) if you have a suitably sized iPod, click here.
    or
    4) drag & drop the entire iTunes folder to the iMac. put it in the proper location on the iMac in HD/users/your_name/music (overwrite the iTunes folder there - presumably void of any content right now). when done, on the iMac, launch iTunes with the option key pressed. you will see this window
click on +choose library+ and navigate to the +iTunes library file+ (inside the iTunes folder you just dragged & dropped).
    any help ?

  • HT1338 How do I migrate from G5 iMac (PPC) 10.4.11 to a new Intel iMac?

I am running OSX Tiger 10.4.11 on an iMac G5 PowerPC from 2006. If I upgrade my hardware to a brand new Intel iMac running Mountain Lion as I am considering, how do I best migrate from my old machine to the new, problem free?
I believe that I can't upgrade beyond 10.4.11 on my G5 as it isn't supported so my problem is a dual upgrade/migration one!
I'm also aware that I can't run PPC software on an Intel Mac but I'm really having trouble getting my head around the problem of such a large, combined hardware and OS upgrade! HELP - what do I need to do?? Simple explantions only please!
PS - Apologies if this aimed at the wrong community or it is not presented correctly - it's my first post!
    Many thanks,
    Len57

Thanks Mende1; I know that PPC apps won't function on Intel machines but I can migrate the Universal apps, right? There is such a large gap between Tiger and Mountain Lion - can I still migrate files directly from one to the other taking the Universal apps as well? Sorry, I'm not very computer savvy!

  • Installing an existing copy of CS3 to new Intel iMac

I want to install CS3 on my new Intel iMac (moving from my almost defunct PPC G5 tower) which will run Snow Leopard.
I understand using the migrate feature may not be a good idea.
Problem is, I have the CS3 upgrade disc. I do have my original CS full version.
Will the CS version install on an Intel Mac? I was planning on installing CS
and then upgrading with my CS3 disk. Will this work? If not please suggest another method.
I have PS7 and CS full install disks and CS2 and CS3 update disks.
    Thanks

You should only need the serial number from the version you upgraded from. If you went from CS to CS3 then have the CS serial and disk handy.
I don't remember if the installer wants you to pop the CS disk in for verification or not.

  • Importing video from Samsung a707 to new Intel iMac

I've got a new Intel iMac with 3 GB RAM, 500 GB HD, and the Nvidia 256 graphics card... and I've just upgraded my cell phone to a Samsung a707, which has a 2 mp chip, and accepts microSD memory cards. With a 1 GB memory chip, it's supposed to be able to take about a one hour video. I can't find a firewire microSD card reader that would let me import the phone's videos into my iMac. It comes with an SD adaptor, so I could use a firewire SD memory reader too, I think. Does anybody have any suggestions about how I can get the videos on the microSD memory card into my iMac, and then edit them with iMovie?
    Thanks for your help!
    Tim

Your problems may well be down to the way you connect your camera and in which order you establish a connection. If all else fails voltaic will get the files from your camera in AIC which will readily be imported into im08 for editing.
