Transferring Email messages

I need to transfer old Email messages from a Powerbook G4 running 10.5.8 to a newer iMac running 10.6.8. I can move the messages from Mail Library into the newer Mac Mail Library (via home wireless network), but when I open Mail program on the new iMac the Emails don't show up in the Mailbox I transferred them to. I can see the messages in Mail Library and even read them if I double click on the message, but I can't see them in the Mail program.
Is there a compatibility issue between Leopard and Snow Leopard?
Am I doing something wrong?
Any ideas?
My wife keeps all of her Emails in the Inbox, and I can't get her to do it any other way. So I run into problems whenever we switch computers.

Thanks, I had forgotten about "Rebuild your Mailbox". I selected the Mailbox where I located the transferred Emails and then did a rebuild your mailbox. Worked like a charm, and I can now see all the Emails. Thanks again.

  • Transferring email messages from 10.4.11 on PowerPC to 10.8.5 Intel

Can I import all my old email messages from the old iMac G4 running 10.4.11 to my new iMac running 10.8.5?  On http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889?viewlocale=en_US, Apple says:
"Note: Copying any data files from your user Library folder to the new computer could have unexpected results."
So is there any way I can move the messages to the new iMac and still be able to read them?  At the very least, I'd like to import all the email addresses I've sent to and received from.  I know I can't use Migration Assistant.
I also have a MacBook (Intel) running 10.6.8.  Would it work any better to transfer to that machine first, then to the iMac?

Thank you, dianeoforegon.  It seems to have worked, though it created a messy folder structure.  I just hope I don't get any "unexpected results" later.
You can drag the folders out of the imported folder. If the folder already exists, move the messages into the new folder. If the folder does not exist, drag to the On My Mac header and it will sort the folder alaphabetically.
Now should I just keep the old Mail folder on my desktop?  Or can I move it somewhere out of the way?  I can't delete it now, can I?
    You can delete.
One more question -- it seems that the addresses in the old email messages don't automatically populate the To: field in a new message.  Is there any way to get them to do that?
First let's go over the basics....
Mail stores your recipients’ email addresses in the Previous Recipients list. To view, under Window in the Menu bar select Previous Recipients. If the person is in your Address Book, you'll see a small icon next to their name. To add to your Address Book, select “Add to Contacts.” in the bottom right of the window.
    Copy your data....
    On the old computer,
Open Mail and select all contacts in the Previous Recipients List and select “Add to Address Book".
In the Address Book, select all contacts and drag to a folder on your desktop. This will create a vcf file with all your contacts.
Use the same method you used before to transfer to your new computer. Drag the file to the desktop.
In Contacts (Address Book) select File > Import and navigate to the .vcf file. You'll most likely see a window with "Are you sure you want to import xxx cards" xxx cards are duplicates and will be updated.
You can select to Review Duplicates..., Cancel, Import. I would import, then run Look for Duplicates under Card in the Menu bar.
Going forward, keep your Address Book updated. If you sync to iCloud your contacts will be available on all your devices.

  • Is there any way to copy email messages from an iPhone to a computer (pc or mac)?

My pc with my mail database was formatted and the mails lost. I have about 1000 mails on my iPhone that I desperately want to transfer back to my desktop.
My mail was on a POP server and I have no copies anywhere other than on the iphone.
I am not concerned about future email messages  - my question is about transferring existing messages from the iphone to a computer.

How do I delete excess email messages from my iPhone.  There are 300 messages listed, and every time I delete some, more are added from old messages.  How do I limit the number of messages that can appear on my phone?  How can I delete messages in bulk,

    You can't.
All photos transferred from your computer are stored in the Photo Library. The photos in the album or albums below are not duplicates - they include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. This way you can view the photos in a particular album only by selecting the album, or you can view all photos available in all albums by selecting Photo Library.
Just as with an iTunes playlist. A song cannot be in an iTunes playlist unless the song is in the main iTunes library. Placing a song in a playlist does not duplicate the song. Remove the main iTunes library or the songs from the main iTunes library that are in a playlist and the songs will no longer be in the playlist either. This way you can listen to the songs in the playlist only by selecting the playlist, or all songs in your entire iTunes library by selecting Music under Library in the iTunes source list.
The same with iPhoto on a Mac. A photo cannot be in an in iPhoto Event or Album unless the photo is in the main iPhoto library. Placing a photo in an Event or Album does not duplicate the photo. This way you can view the photos in an iPhoto Event or Album only by selecting the Event or Album, or all photos in all Events or Albums.

  • HT201269 How can I backup all my email messages from my ipad2 to my mac. iTunes does not transfer all the sent / received mail.

    Hi,
I damaged my ipad and saved a backup using iTunes while it was away for repair.
I used another ipad while it was away, but none of my email messages sent or received had been saved.
How do I backup my email ?

hi, not totally, as when the N8 died, the shop here in France couldn't really do much to help and more like didn't want to do much to help, and transferred what data was available from the sim to the mini sim on the apple. Now looking in depth, Windows Contact is an 'orrible application that is not very easy to handle (Windows Address Book is no longer available for anything above Vista and is all tied into Windows Live and things to do with Hotmail and Messenger..... Gatesy is trying to dominate things again..... WOZ HELP!!)
Sony have worked alongside Apple for a long time, so with a new 12/2012 Experia smartphone, the transfer details are a doddle, but now that Nokia has succombed to being part of the Dark Side (MS) and offering windows phones only, I can understand the retiscence of our late leader and his "heavenly crew" of having to deal with the Dark Side

  • Transfering email from old computer

Does anybody have advice about transfering email (from Mail.app) from my old laptop to my new MacBook. I have many email accounts set up in Mail and I do not want to a) manually reinput all the settings and rules for each mailbox, or b) rebuild my mailboxes from the server (i.e. download all my emails again).
I have seen the posts about using the migration wizard and I realize that the general consensus is "just follow the directions" BUT in my case I only want to transfer email.
    Any suggestions?

I transferred my mail from my mini to my macbook and any message older than a few days says
"The message from <[email protected]> <[email protected]> concerning “Tackboards!” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
What does this mean? I copied the entire library/mail file over to my new mac and now I don't have all the emails that in my inbox. If I look in my folders, the information is still there though.
Any help would be great. This is a work computer issue.
    Thanks,
    Karl

  • Synchronize/Transfer email messages from PowerBook to my Mac Pro

Before buying my Mac Pro I was (still am) using a PowerBook and I have a ton of email messages that have been downloaded to my hard drive. I would like to synchronize/transfer those messages to my Mac Pro so that I don't have to be searching for messages in the other computer.
I tried using the Migration Assistant but my email messages were not transferred.
    What do you suggest?

What type of mail account do you have - POP or IMAP? What email application do you use? Until you answer these questions it will be difficult to advise you.

  • How can I calculate the total size of my email messages?

I have an iMac and MacBook Pro. I use Apple's Mail application on each computer and have three email accounts that are feeding into it. I currently synchronize everything through MobileMe. I want to know how to calculate how many MB (probably several GB!) of space my email messages are now using, as I want to upgrade to Lion on the two computers and will soon be getting a 32BG iPad on which I would like to use the Mail application as well. I'd like to know in advance if I need to pay for more than the 5GB of free storage that iCloud will give me before making these changes, as I don't want to lose my email messages. For various reasons, I'd prefer not to go the route of archiving the messages. I can't figure out how to calculate how much space the messages are currently using.

The important detail is the cylinders not the partition numbers. The partitions are simply slots where cylinder space can be assigned if its available.
The backup partition (2) represents the whole disk and shows you have 14086 cylinders available.
But you'll notice that all of those cylinders are already assigned to various partitions. So there is no free space available.

  • Why Outlook email messages show unreadable characters

When you receive a new email in Outlook, you may see unreadable characters in the email message body. This issue could be caused by one of the following reasons on Outlook client side:
The email you received is converted to plain text format or a different encoding by a virus scanner.
This always happens when you are using characters (Such as apostrophes, double quotes, dashes, and ellipsis) supported by the "Smart Quotes" feature. When the email you received is converted to plain text format or a different encoding by a virus
scanner, the character is converted from the ASCII character to a Unicode character, which is not supported on the recipient’s side.
To prevent this issue from happening, we can turn off the “Smart Quotes” Feature in Outlook:
    1. Open Outlook 2013.
    2. Click File > Options > Mail.
    3. Click Spelling and AutoCorrect button.
    4. In the Editor Options window, click AutoCorrect Options button to open the AutoCorrect dialog.
    5. Click AutoFormat tab, and then clear the check box before “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes” under Replace heading.
    6. Click OK.
The issue may be related to font substitution when a change is made to the Web Options in Microsoft Word.
If a change is made to the Web Options in Microsoft Word, registry data under the following key may be configured incorrectly:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Internet\Fonts
This problem has been seen to occur when the Latin string value under the \Fonts key was empty (no value).
We can check the Web Options setting in Word via:
    1. Start Word.
    2. Go to File > Options > Advanced.
    3. Scroll down to the General section, click Web Options button.
    4. Switch to Font tab.
To resolve the problem, we need to delete the \Fonts registry key. To do this, please follow:
    1. Exit Word.
    2. Press Windows key + R to open the Run command, type regedit and press Enter.
    3. Navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Internet\Fonts
    4. Right-click the Font key and select Delete.
    5. Click Yes and exit Registry Editor.
The sender used an e-mail program that did not mark messages with a language encoding (character set), or marked messages with an incorrect encoding setting.
In this case, we will see unreadable characters when we open the received message in our Outlook. For example, European regional characters (like German) require UTF-8 encoding protocol. So if the encoding in your environment is set to ASCII, the regional
    characters will not be available.
To resolve this issue, we need to change the encoding in Outlook to which will display your message correctly.
    1. Double-click to open the message you received.
    2. Click Actions button in the Move group under Message tab.
    3. Click Other Actions > Encoding.
    4. Click More and select the correct encoding setting for the email.
    5. After you finish reading the message, close the message, and click Yes button to save changes to the message.
When we send an email with Outlook, we can set Outlook to automatically select encoding for outgoing email messages to increase the possibility that the recipient receiving the message will see all the characters rendered properly, even if they run older
e-mail programs. By default, Outlook 2013 will automatically select an optimal encoding for outgoing e-mail messages. We can change the settings here in Outlook 2013: File > Options > Advanced > International Options section.
Something you may need to know when you set the encoding settings:
    * The Unicode (UTF-8) character enables the complete range of characters on all computers. It’s the official IANA code for the UTF-8 character encoding.
    * Western European (ISO) and Western European (Windows) character set can be read by almost all computers.
    * If you are using a language other than English, you must choose the correct character set for that language, or the characters you need will not be displayed correctly.

The "problem" is not really a problem. I send and receive emails fine. But the in the panel between the Inbox (message queue) and the reading pane this is displayed:
From Mozilla Support Forum <[email protected]> (white star)
Subject Toad-Hall posted an answer to your question "Why do received email messages show they are addressed to an address other than my own?"
Reply to [email protected] (white star)
    To [email protected] yellow star)
cfortso@gmail is the address of one of my contacts.
This glitch is not really bothersome, I just can't imagine why it happens.

Open Mail, go to top and under Mail select Preferences. Click on general and make sure where it says 'Dock Unread Count, you have it set to Inbox Only or All Mailboxes, whichever you want and that it isn't set to none. If it is already set then try cetting it to none, close mail, restart, open Mail and go and change it again from none to what you want.
